Railways gave Rs 59,837 crore subsidy on passenger tickets in 2019-20: Minister

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Indian Railways gave subsidies worth Rs 59,837 crore on passenger tickets in 2019-20, which comes to an average concession of around 53 percent for every person travelling, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told Rajya Sabha on Friday.

The minister said concessions on top of this subsidy are still being provided to many categories such as divyangjans, students and patients, but did not clarify if the government is planning to restore the earlier discount given to those above 60 years of age.

Months after a parliamentary panel recommended that the discount on railway tickets to senior citizens should be restored, the minister was asked in a written question about the government’s position on the concession which was suspended after the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

In a written reply to a question by CPI MP Binoy Viswam on whether the railways has taken cognizance of the parliamentary standing committee’s recommendation to restore concessions in trains for senior citizens, the minister said, “The Standing Committee on Railways has advised to review and consider concession to senior citizens at least in sleeper and 3 AC…”

“Government gave subsidy of Rs 59,837 crore on passenger tickets in 2019-20. This amounts to concession of 53 per cent on an average to every person travelling on Railways. This subsidy is continuing for all passengers. Further concessions beyond this subsidy amount are continuing for many categories like Divyangjans, students and patients on Railways. This subsidy is continuing for all passengers,” Vaishnaw said.

In response to another question by BJP MP Sushil Modi, the minister informed that revenue foregone due to concessions in passenger fare to senior citizens during 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20 were approximately Rs 1,491 crore, Rs 1,636 crore and Rs 1,667 crore respectively.

In 2017-18, Rs 670 crore was forgone in subsidy for senior citizens in non-AC classes of trains, while Rs 820 crore was the cost for subsidy in AC classes. In 2018-19, Rs 714 crore was spent on these concessions in non-AC classes, and Rs 921 crore in AC classes. In 2019-20, discount to non-AC classes was Rs 701 crore, while for AC classes it was Rs 965 crore.

At present, concessions in passenger fare are admissible to four categories of persons with disabilities (divyangjans), 11 categories of patients and students, he said.

Between 2019 and 2022, the concession for passengers with physical disabilities cost the railways Rs 209 crore, for patients it was Rs 221 crore and for students it was Rs 60 crore.

In a report submitted in August last year, the Standing Committee on Railways had said senior citizens were earlier granted a concession amounting to 40-50 per cent of their railway fares, but the practice was stopped during the COVID-19 crisis.

The panel in its recommendations said concession to senior citizens which was available in pre-Covid times may be reviewed and considered at least in Sleeper and AC III classes urgently, so that the vulnerable and the genuinely needy senior citizens could avail the facility in these classes.

It also urged the ministry to give wide publicity to the “give up” scheme, which encourages senior citizens to give up their concessions voluntarily.

BRS will fight Maha polls showcasing Telangana’s progress, says minister

    [ad_1]

Aurangabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) will contest all elections in Maharashtra henceforth by showcasing the progress Telangana has made in nine years under chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), a party minister said on Friday.

Speaking to PTI, Telangana Minister for Forests and Environment Indrakaran Reddy said CM Rao will address a “joiners’ meeting” in Nanded, some 280 kilometres from here, on February 5.

Reddy, who is touring Nanded as part of preparations for the meet, said, “CM KCR will visit Sachkhand Gurdwara in Nanded, then address the joiners’ meet and follow it up with a press conference on Sunday.”

“Telangana has progressed a lot in the past nine years. It shares a 974-kilometre border with Maharashtra and the difference in the development in villages in the two states is clearly visible. Maharashtra has Mumbai, which is the nation’s financial capital. Why can’t Maharashtra see the same kind of development as has taken place in Telangana,” Reddy asked.

Criticising the political leadership in Maharashtra for the lack of development, Reddy claimed villages in his state were getting electricity and water round the clock, while those in Yavatmal were in the news for farmer suicides.

“The Bharat Rashtra Samithi will fight all polls here showcasing the development of Telangana. Our slogan will be ‘ab ki baar, kisan sarkar’. We are not going to forge an alliance with any party in Maharashtra as of now,” he added.

Court grants bail to ex-Maha minister Anil Deshmukh’s aide in corruption case

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: A special court on Friday granted bail to Kundan Shinde, an aide of former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh, in a corruption case being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Special CBI judge S H Gwalani allowed the bail plea of Shinde, who worked as a personal assistant to Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Deshmukh, Shinde’s lawyer Aniket Nikam said.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had in June 2021 arrested Shinde in connection with a money laundering case, and later the CBI took his custody in a corruption case.

A special PMLA court on Wednesday allowed Shinde’s bail plea in the money laundering case.

Other accused in the case include Anil Deshmukh and dismissed assistant police inspector Sachin Waze. Deshmukh is out on bail, while Waze continues to be in judicial custody.

Former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh in March 2021 alleged that Deshmukh, the then home minister, had given a target to police officers to collect Rs 100 crore per month from restaurants and bars.

Former assistant police inspector Waze, who was arrested in the case of an explosives-laden vehicle found near industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s house in Mumbai last year, had also levelled similar allegations.

The high court in April 2021 directed the CBI to carry out a preliminary inquiry.

Based on the inquiry, the central agency had registered an FIR against Deshmukh and others for alleged corruption and misuse of official power.

Pakistan’s ex-information minister Fawad Chaudhry released from jail

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Former information minister and senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry was released from jail on Wednesday after a court granted him bail in a sedition case.

Chaudhry, 52, a close aide of former prime minister Imran Khan, was arrested from his residence in Lahore last week in a pre-dawn raid after a case was registered against him at Islamabad’s Kohsar Police Station on the complaint of the Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan for “threatening” the electoral body’s members and their families.

Additional sessions court Judge Faizan Gilani granted bail to Chaudhry in the sedition case against a surety bond of Rs20,000.

The judge said that he accepted the bail on the condition that Chaudhry would not repeat his allegation that led to his arrest and the case. “I am granting the bail on the condition that Fawad Chaudhry does not repeat such remarks,” he remarked.

Chaudhry was later released from the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

“I said in court as well. I stand by all that I said, and I will not back down,” he said in his brief address to the party workers who had gathered outside the prison to welcome him.

He also said that he did not speak against any institution. “I never talk against the institutions. I am the biggest supporter of our institutions, and I never said anything against them. That is why I reiterate that whatever I said was right,” he said.

A judicial magistrate had sent him to jail on Monday on a 14-day judicial remand by rejecting a police request for custody to probe him in the case.

Chaudhry is facing sedition charges for publicly “threatening” the members of the election commission.

The detained PTI spokesperson has been vocal in highlighting the party policy and objectives as enunciated by the party chief Imran Khan.

The PTI, which rejected his arrest as politically motivated, had been demanding his release.
