Nagpur: A team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrived in Nagpur on Tuesday to conduct a probe into threatening phone calls made to Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, a police official said.

The calls were allegedly made by a murder convict, Jayesh Pujari alias Kantha, who was arrested from a jail in Belagavi, Karnataka, and booked under the anti-terror law UAPA.

A senior official of the Nagpur police said the NIA had registered a case at Bengaluru and the Mumbai unit of the central agency was directed to conduct an investigation.

A team of the NIA arrived in Nagpur from Mumbai and started collecting documents and crucial leads regarding the case, he said.

Exploring the suspected role of Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistan-based terror outfit, and the underworld in the episode are the main focus of the investigation, said the official.

On January 14, Pujari made a threatening call to Gadkari’s public relations office in Nagpur, demanding Rs 100 crore and claiming to be a member of the Dawood Ibrahim gang, according to the police.

At that time, he was lodged in a jail in neighbouring Karnataka.

He made another call on March 21, threatening to harm the BJP Lok Sabha MP from Nagpur if Rs 10 crore was not paid to him, the police said.

Pujari was arrested and brought to Nagpur on March 28 from a jail in Belagavi city of Karnataka, and the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act was invoked against him.

After receiving the green signal from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, NIA officials launched an investigation on terror angle as Pujari had relations with terrorists, including Lashkar-e-Taiba’s South Division chief Captain Naseer, said the official.

The murder convict had also taken arms training in the North-East, he added.

  • AAP claims Delhi Police spying on Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal

AAP claims Delhi Police spying on Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday alleged Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was being spied on by the Delhi Police with its Special Cell officials in plainclothes “roaming around” his residence the whole day, a claim denied by the force.

AAP chief spokesperson and Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj told a press conference here the party’s Rajya Sabha MPs Raghav Chadha and Sanjay Singh have written to Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora in connection with the matter.

Police sources rejected the charges of spying, saying Special Branch officials, and not Special Cell officials, are deployed for assessing security arrangements around the houses of dignitaries as part of a protocol.

    MS Education Academy

“Special Branch officers are like the eyes and ears of Delhi Police. They carry out an assessment of threat, like whether the security personnel are doing their job properly, checking visitors, keeping a vigil or not,” a source said.

“They prepare a report on such things and submit them to their seniors. Their job is to see whether the local police and security personnel are doing their job properly. They assess the area and security arrangements around the houses of other dignitaries too. It is part of protocol and not spying,” the source said.

The Delhi BJP, meanwhile, alleged the AAP was making the claim to divert people’s attention from the “scam” in the renovation of Kejriwal’s official residence.

Addressing the media, Bharadwaj said, “In the last two days, our MPs have written letters on a very serious issue.”

He then read out from the similar letters written by the MPs.

“I would like to draw your attention to a serious issue. Delhi’s people have made Kejriwal CM thrice. There have been security lapses and he has been attacked. Police are supposed to protect the citizens. But it’s sad that they are not able to keep even the chief minister safe. Few days back, a drone was spotted near his residence but no one was arrested in connection with the incident,” he said.

The MPs, he said, have further pointed out that some officers of Delhi Police’s Special Cell have been roaming around Kejriwal’s residence for the whole day.

Bharadwaj added, “When asked, they said they are on a special task. What special task is this? Is the Delhi chief minister being spied upon? Under which law is the Delhi Police spying on its own CM? They are keeping an eye on people coming to the CM’s residence.”

The MPs also flagged the deteriorating law and order situation in the national capital.

“Why is Delhi Police not protecting the CM but spying on him? Is it not illegal? What is the purpose of this? The matter is very serious. We are not objecting to what they are doing. We have objections on what the Centre is asking them to do,” he said, alleging a political conspiracy.

He said the BJP wants to finish the AAP.

“Our differences with the PM are known to the world. The PM wants to end the chief minister politically. They want to end AAP and these events raise serious questions. They have to answer these questions — What is the special task given to the plainclothes policemen?”

When Bharadwaj was asked whether the presence of policemen was indicative of enhanced security around the CM’s residence following the drone incident, he said the person whose security was being beefed up would have been at least informed.

“A senior officer will brief the CM and will ask, ‘What do you want?’ The PM requires more security than the CM. So, is the police also spying outside the PM residence? If the same is being there, we can accept it. No policeman can roam in the area around PM’s residence,” he said.

A Special Cell officer said the staff has the responsibility of maintaining law and order and assessing security measures for the chief minister and other VIPs. “The officers had furnished their ID cards when they were asked to. These are baseless allegations,” the official added.

Delhi BJP Spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said the charges levelled by AAP leaders Sanjay Singh, Raghav Chadha and Saurabh Bhardwaj is their “last ditch attempt” to divert attention from the bungalow renovation and liquor “scams”.

“Aam Aadmi Party’s leaders are frustrated as the public perception and image of common man built by their leader Arvind Kejriwal has totally eroded and today when all their efforts to divert public attention from Raj Mahal scam have failed they have popped up this allegation of spying outside the CM House,” he said.

Kapoor said AAP leaders should realise the Delhi Police provides security to Kejriwal and they don’t need to deploy extra staff if they want to keep a watch him.

NYT running smear campaign against India: Union minister Anurag Thakur

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur slammed The New York Times (NYT) chairman A G Sulzberger on Thursday for his claims that journalists are treated as terrorists in India.

Speaking at a UNESCO event on World Press Freedom Day on Wednesday, Sulzberger said in India, authorities have raided newsrooms and treated journalists essentially as terrorists.

Thakur asserted that the law took its own course in India in case of any wrongdoing and no one can claim immunity citing the status of being a media organisation.

    MS Education Academy

“In India law takes its own course if someone does something wrong, newsroom or no newsroom. Mere claiming the status of a newsroom does not grant immunity from unlawful deeds,” he wrote on Twitter.

Thakur wondered how any investigation amounts to an attack on the press.

“Is it prudent to be a loose mouth and say journalists in India are treated as terrorists?” the minister asked.

He accused the NYT of running a “smear campaign” against India and using the UNESCO podium to “distort facts”.

“Unable to digest the global rise of India and its turning into an economic powerhouse, certain old world media houses have been running a systematic smear campaign against India,” Thakur tweeted.

“NYT, which has carved a niche for itself for writing fact-free and fabricated anti-India stories, shamelessly misused the podium of UNESCO to distort facts,” he added.

The minister said it has been difficult for him to differentiate whether the newspaper is “The New York Times or New Distort Times”.

Governor stalling Telangana’s development, alleges minister

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana’s Finance and Health Minister T. Harish Rao on Thursday alleged that Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan has been stalling the development of the state.

He said that the Governor calls Telangana as ‘My State’ and ‘My Government but was working to stop the development of the state. It was nothing but back-stabbing, he said.

In an informal chat with the reporters, he hit back at the Governor for certain comments she made during a programme the previous day.

    MS Education Academy

Taking a dig at Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, she had remarked that it is easy to meet heads of foreign nations but not the Chief Minister.

Harish Rao said by making the comments during G-20 meeting, the Governor lowered the honour of the state. “This is nothing but humiliating people of the state,” he said.

He said that people were feeling that the Governor was acting under the guidance of the BJP and she was welcome to enter into politics instead of doing politics being in that seat

On the Governor’s allegation that she was not invited for the inauguration of state Secretariat, Harish Rao asked if there was a provision in the Constitution to invite the Governor for the inauguration of the Secretariat.

He said that it was the prerogative of the elected government to decide whom to invite. “Has the Prime Minister invited the President of India for laying foundation of new Parliament? Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Vande Bharat Express trains. Did he invite President of India,” he asked.

Harish Rao said that the Governor kept nine bills pending for seven months and some of them were returned only after the state government approached the Supreme Court.

By stopping the bills, the Governor stalled the state’s development, he alleged. “Medical bill was aimed at increasing the age limit of professors as we have shortage of professors. Similarly, Forest University Bill was stopped which provides employment for some unemployed and offers education to the youth. Same was the case with private universities Bill. By rejecting these bills what she had achieved except stopping the progress of the state,” he said.

He also questioned the Governor’s action in not giving consent for a bill for seven private universities while she had cleared a similar bill two years ago.

Referring to a common recruitment board, the minister said that it was there in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra and why it should not be so here.
