A British court sentenced three people— couple and their accomplice to prison, on charges of attempting to bring two Iraqis into the United Kingdom (UK) by hiding them in sofas, local media reported.

The couple, 48-year-old Nicholas Fulwood and his wife 45-year-old Pamela, from the Midlands region of the United Kingdom, tried to smuggle immigrants from Iraq to Britain inside sofas with the help of a car wash company manager named Azad Ahmadi.

On Monday, February 20, Nicholas Fullwood was jailed for three years, while his wife was handed a two-year sentence, the Independent reported.

Ahmadi, was sentenced to four years and six months in prison.

On January 5, 2019, the couple was stopped when trying to enter the UK, in a Peugeot Boxer van, by Border Force officers in the UK control zone in Coquelles, France.

As per media reports, the couple told officers they were on their way back to the UK after shipping furniture in Lille, in northern France.

Upon searching the truck, the officers found two Iraqi immigrants at the base of two different sofas.

It is reported that, the three were sentenced for conspiracy to assist illegal immigration, following an investigation by the Criminal and Financial Investigation Unit of the Ministry of Interior.

Indo-Canadian man pleads guilty to smuggling migrants into US

    [ad_1]

Toronto: Indo-Canadian Rajinder Pal Singh, who admitted to receiving more than $500,000, for coordinating a human smuggling ring moving migrants into the US via Canada, has pleaded guilty to the charges, the media reported.

Singh was arrested in Washington in May last year.

According to CBC News, during a plea agreement hearing in the US District Court, Western District of Washington at Seattle, Singh pleaded guilty to “conspiracy to transport and harbour certain aliens for profit and conspiracy to commit money laundering”.

His sentencing is scheduled for May 9.

In October last year, The Fifth Estate reported that Singh had become a “person of interest” in the Manitoba RCMP investigation into the tragic freezing death of the Patel family on the Canada-US border in January 2022.

On January 19, 2022, the bodies of three-year-old Dharmik Patel; his 11-year-old sister, Vihangi Patel; their mother, 37-year-old Vaishali Patel; and their father, 39-year-old Jagdish Patel; were found in a snow-covered field east of Emerson, about 100 km south of Winnipeg.

The US investigators had surveillance of Singh discussing possibly moving migrants through Manitoba, according to The Fifth Estate.

“The wiretapped conversations took place in January 2022, around the same time the Patel family was being moved from the Greater Toronto Area to the remote border area south of Winnipeg,” said the report.

“Singh played a key role in the non-citizens smuggling conspiracy” and “prior to the unlawful entry of the non-citizens into the US, he would coordinate with members of the conspiracy who housed the non-citizens in British Columbia,” read the plea agreement.

To help migrants navigate the Canadian border, Singh used the Life360 app, which allows users to share their physical location through their cell phone.

Once they made their way into the US, he would arrange pickups through the Uber ride share app.

Singh charged up to $11,000 per person for his services, according to the report.

The US Homeland Security had been investigating Singh since 2018.

In 2009, Singh pleaded guilty to bank fraud and illegal re-entry after deportation. He was sentenced to another 27 months in US federal prison, said the report.

  • At least 39 migrants killed in Panama bus crash after crossing Darién Gap

At least 39 migrants killed in Panama bus crash after crossing Darién Gap

    [ad_1]

At least 39 migrants have been killed in a gruesome bus accident in Panama after trekking for days through the Central American country’s southern jungles on their way to a new life in the US.

The accident took place in the early hours of Wednesday as a convoy of buses traveled from Panama’s border with Colombia towards a migrant reception centre near the town of Gualaca.

“We are in a disaster situation,” Dr Katherine Guerra, the emergency department chief at a hospital in the city of David, told reporters as survivors were rushed there with exposed fractures and severe abdominal injuries.

“There were families, children, newborn babies, elderly women,” one Venezuelan migrant who was at the scene told the newspaper La Estrella de Panamá.

Panama’s president, Nito Cortizo, said government teams were working “arduously” to help survivors and tweeted: “This is deplorable news for Panama and the region.”

    Map of the Darién gap

The names and nationalities of those killed were not immediately clear but Gualaca’s mayor, Luis Manuel Etribí Miranda, told reporters he believed most were from Haiti.

Cuba’s foreign minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, said citizens of his country were also involved and sent his condolences to victims of the “terrible accident”.

Tens of thousands of Haitians have poured through the perilous rainforests of the Darién Gap between Colombia and Panama in recent years as their Caribbean homeland has fallen deeper into humanitarian and political crisis.

Many thousands of Cubans have made the same journey hoping to outrun growing political persecution and economic strife back home.

Nearly 70,000 Venezuelans also travelled through the Darién last year as their country continued to reel from one of the most severe economic collapses outside of a war zone in recent world history. A total of nearly 250,000 people made the journey last year compared with about 133,000 in 2021, according to official statistics.

Panama’s migration chief, Samira Gozaine, told reporters that authorities believed the accident had happened after the bus missed a turn into the migrant centre where it was supposed to leave its 66 passengers. Local reports said the driver lost control of the vehicle after turning back and the bus plunged off an escarpment, leaving dozens of passengers dead.

The Human Rights Watch activist Juan Pappier called the accident a disaster foretold. “When I visited this region, we saw that these buses carried more people than permitted and made long journeys without breaks. There have been similar accidents in the past, with numerous injured,” Pappier tweeted.

  • Florida GOP hands DeSantis wins on Disney, migrants ahead of likely ’24 bid

Florida GOP hands DeSantis wins on Disney, migrants ahead of likely ’24 bid

“The reality is we have a governor setting up a presidential bid, and this is basically his attempt to get earned media time on Fox News,” Rep. Anna Eskamani (D-Orlando) said during Friday floor debate opposing a special session bill that would expand a DeSantis-championed migrant flight program.

Republican legislative leaders convened the special session at DeSantis’ urging but downplayed suggestions that they were reluctantly pushed into it by the governor. Yet they couldn’t answer basic questions about the bills before the Legislature approved the measures.

“You guys are making inquiries, and I look forward to talking about it. But I think the governor is on the right path,” Speaker Paul Renner (R-Palm Coast) told reporters Friday when asked how the state spent millions on the migrant flight program.

The migrant proposal approved by lawmakers expands the controversial program that DeSantis used to fly nearly 50 mostly Venezuelan migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard in September. The new bill allows the state to spend money to move migrants from anywhere in the U.S., not just those currently in Florida. A Democratic state lawmaker, Sen. Jason Pizzo (D-Miami), sued DeSantis last year, claiming that the $12 million previously earmarked for the program only allowed the state to transport migrants who were in Florida.

Yet questions remain over how the state spent millions of dollars that lawmakers previously appropriated for the migrant transport program. In September, DeSantis paid an outside vendor — which was a former legal client of the governor’s public safety czar, Larry Keefe — to fly migrants to Massachusetts. Florida paid at least $1.5 million to arrange several sets of flights from Texas to Democratic strongholds in September, but it later approved a further $1.9 million in payments in October that the governor’s office has not yet publicly explained.

Public records also later showed that Keefe used a private email account that made it appear as if the messages were from “Clarice Starling,” the protagonist from the “Silence of The Lambs,” when coordinating the program.

Renner said he couldn’t answer questions about whether it was appropriate for DeSantis administration staffers to use private emails that disguise their true identity because he was not familiar enough with the Keefe emails.

During a Wednesday news conference, Senate President Kathleen Passidomo (R-Naples) said it was “above my pay grade, or a different pay grade I guess I should say” when asked about specifics of the program. She directed some questions to Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie, who will be in charge of the migrant flight program under the special session bill given final passage Friday.

During a lengthy Wednesday hearing in the Senate, Pizzo grilled the bill sponsor, state Sen. Blaise Ingoglia (R-Spring Hill), about his proposal, but Ingoglia repeatedly said he couldn’t comment on the program because of pending litigation.

Lawmakers this week were also unable to answer questions about a measure lawmakers approved that allows a statewide prosecutor to charge individuals with election-related crimes. The change came about after the DeSantis-created Office of Election Crimes and Security highlighted last August the arrest of 20 people for allegedly illegally voting in the 2020 election because they had previous convictions for serious crimes like murder.

Those arrests, however, have come under scrutiny after POLITICO and other outlets reported that the defendants were told by state and local election officials that they were allowed to cast ballots. Judges tossed the charges against three defendants in part because the Office of Statewide Prosecution does not have jurisdiction in the election fraud cases. The bill lawmakers approved now clarifies that the office has authority to file such charges.

Yet lawmakers approved the changes to the office without knowing if it would retroactively apply to the defendants who had already been charged by the Office of Statewide Prosecution.

“I can’t answer that,” Passidomo said during her Wednesday press conference. “I would generally say these bills are not retroactive.”

Renner on Friday said he also was not sure, but thought the bill could be retroactive. He said regardless, the bill was needed because DeSantis’ new office racked up early losses in court.

“These new rules will be hashed out in the courts, and the courts will make the determination as to what may or may not apply retroactively,” he said. “What we are doing here is to make sure the jurisdictional issue is solved. There are some cases that went the other way, and so we want to make sure we have the ability to do what we always do, make it easy to vote, and hard to cheat.”

Lawmakers this week also approved a bill giving Florida and DeSantis more control over the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which has given Disney World the right of self-governance at its Orlando-based theme park for more than five decades. Lawmakers last year stripped Disney World of its self-governing status after top Disney officials publicly criticized Florida’s law that bans teachers from leading classroom instructions on sexual orientation and gender identity in classrooms from kindergarten through third grade. The law is widely known as “Don’t Say Gay.”

Legislators renamed the district, took away some little-used powers and gave DeSantis more authority over the company by creating a five-person oversight board he will appoint.

The week before the session began, DeSantis publicly pushed lawmakers to convene in Tallahassee to approve the Disney bill and hinted at other unspecified priorities. Lawmakers were quietly concerned the session was being called too soon and a Disney-focused bill was not yet ready. Legislators filed the Disney bill last and needed to amend it, adding to the sense that the special session was being hurried.

“This legislation was not rushed at all, like has been reported,” Fred Hawkins, the St. Cloud Republican who sponsored the bill, said Friday, acknowledging the open perception lawmakers had to hurry the bill. “This was thought out, that’s why the bill was so large.”

Republican legislative leaders also defended their decision to call a sixth legislative session in less than a year to help fix DeSantis’ previously passed priorities. The governor or legislative leader called two special sessions in 2021 and four in 2022.

“I think we frequently have special sessions,” Renner said Friday. “As I said, we do not wait around to fix problems and each of these bills in my mind had some time sensitivity to it.”

331 migrants rescued off Libyan coast in past week: IOM

    [ad_1]

Tripoli: The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has said that 331 migrants were rescued and returned to Libya in the past week.

“In the period of January 22-28, 2023, 331 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya,” IOM added in a statement on Monday.

The rescued migrants included 20 women and 35 children, it added.

So far this year, a total of 1,103 migrants were rescued and returned to Libya, while 17 died and 18 others went missing off the Libyan coast, IOM revealed.

In 2022, a total of 24,684 migrants were rescued and returned to Libya, the IOM said, adding 529 migrants died and 848 others went missing off the Libyan coast on the Central Mediterranean route, Xinhua news agency reported.

Because of the insecurity and chaos in the country since the fall of late leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, many migrants, mostly Africans, chose to cross the Mediterranean Sea to European shores from Libya.

Rescued migrants usually end up inside overcrowded reception centres across Libya, despite repeated international calls to close those centres and release the migrants.
