Several Shops Gutted In Midnight Blaze

SRINAGAR: At least six shops were gutted in a midnight blaze on Exchange Road in the Lal Chowk area of Srinagar, officials said on Wednesday.
The shopkeepers said that they came to know about the fire incident in the morning following which they rushed to the spot but found their shops turned into ashes.
“I had denting and painting workshop and all my machinery including electronic items worth more than 10 lakh have got damaged in the fire”, said Tahir Ahmad a fire victim.
Meanwhile, an official said that the fire incident was reported around 2:49 AM, following which four tenders were rushed to douse off the flames.
He said that the fire damaged four automobile workshop sheds and two Kiryana shops—(KNO)

Midnight March: AISA claims 15 activists detained, police deny charge

New Delhi: All India Students’ Association (AISA), a students’ group on Monday claimed that around of its 15 activists were detained from outside the Indraprastha College for Women, where they had gathered to stage a protest against the alleged harassment of girl students during a fest last week.
Delhi Police, however, has denied the charge.
Police personnel were deployed in large numbers while the gates of the college were barricaded.

Led by the AISA, the agitators had gathered to protest against the alleged incident and the administration’s response to it.
“About 15 AISA activists have been detained from the college gate and are being taken to Burari police station,” the students’ body’s Delhi unit president Abhigyan alleged.
A senior police officer, however, denied the allegation.
“Around 10-15 protesters had gathered outside the college gate. They were removed peacefully,” he said.
No one has been detained, the officer added.

Students at the Indraprastha College for Women, a Delhi University affiliate, last week alleged that some men scaled the institute’s boundary walls during a fest and “harassed several students”.
Scores of students have held multiple demonstrations in the last few days, demanding the resignation of the college’s newly-appointed principal over security lapses during the annual fest and its alleged authoritarian steps.

‘Midnight March’ by women students at DU’s Faculty of Arts

New Delhi: Over 130 women students of Delhi University defied the curfew timings of their hostels and PG accommodations to join the Women’s March organised by the Students Federation of India (SFI) on April 1 midnight at the Faculty of Arts, a student and SFI activist Mehina said on Sunday.
“The march on April 1 midnight was aimed at reclaiming the night (hours) and the streets that were previously kept away from women, and to raise awareness about women’s safety,” she said.
According to Samaa, a member of SFI Delhi state committee, the Women’s Night March was organised entirely by women to give them a platform to voice their concerns and to empower them to take back their freedom to move around at night.

The march began with a rally around the Faculty of Arts at midnight, with participants singing songs to celebrate the strength and resilience of women, she added.
The women then gathered at the Faculty of Arts gate, where a range of cultural events were held to showcase the talents of female students and to promote unity and solidarity among women.
“The event was a resounding success and received widespread support from the Delhi University community,” the SFI said.
“As a progressive students organisation, we see the Women’s Night March as a testament to the resilience and strength of women in the DU, and the SFI hopes that the event will inspire more women to speak out against gender-based violence and work towards creating a safer and more inclusive society,” the SFI added.
“It is empowering to see women breaking curfew and reclaiming their right to move around at night. The Women’s Night March is a strong statement that women demand the right to live without fear and to occupy public spaces without any restrictions,” a woman student said.

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday said to have arrested a group of youths alleged of harassing and attacking a family travelling in a car near Srinagar’s Parimpora road.
Taking to microblogging site Twitter, District Police Srinagar wrote, “Police took cognisance of a video wherein a group of youths on bikes are seen harassing and attacking a family on road. Midnight raids were conducted by teams led by SDPO West & SHO Parimpora.”
“All nine accused are arrested & four Bikes seized. FIR registered in Parimpora PS,” it added.
