Microsoft to pay $3 mn fine for selling software to sanctioned Russian firms

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Microsoft will pay $3 million in penalty in the US for selling software to sanctioned companies in Russia, Cuba, Iran and Syria from 2012 to 2019.

The majority of the apparent violations involved blocked Russian entities or persons located in the Crimea region of Ukraine, and occurred as a result of the Microsoft Entities’ failure to identify and prevent the use of its products by prohibited parties, according to the US Department of the Treasury.

“The settlement amount reflects Office of Foreign Assets Control’s (OFAC) determination that the conduct of the Microsoft Entities was non-egregious and voluntarily self-disclosed, and further reflects the significant remedial measures Microsoft undertook upon discovery of the apparent violations,” it said in a statement.

    MS Education Academy

According to an enforcement notice from OFAC, Microsoft, Microsoft Ireland, and Microsoft Russia failed to oversee who was buying the company’s software and services through third-party partners.

Between July 2012 and April 2019, the Microsoft Entities engaged in 1,339 apparent violations of multiple OFAC sanctions programmes when they sold software licenses, activated software licenses, and/or provided related services from servers and systems located in the US and Ireland to SDNs, blocked persons, and other end users located in Cuba, Iran, Syria, Russia, and the Crimea region of Ukraine.

“The causes of these apparent violations included the lack of complete or accurate information on the identities of the end customers for Microsoft’s products,” said the Treasury.

The total value of these sales and related services was $12,105,189.79.

Microsoft Russia employees may have also intentionally tried to defeat the company’s due diligence efforts, according to the US agency.

A Microsoft spokesperson said that “Microsoft takes export control and sanctions compliance very seriously, which is why after learning of the screening failures and infractions of a few employees, we voluntarily disclosed them to the appropriate authorities”.

Microsoft to add its AI-powered 365 Copilot to OneNote

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Microsoft has announced that it is adding its new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered “Microsoft 365 Copilot” assistant to OneNote.

“As your notetaking partner, Copilot uses your prompts to draft plans, generate ideas, create lists, organise information, and more. Copilot can transform existing text by summarising, rewriting, formatting, and adding visual context,” said Greg Mace, a product manager for OneNote.

Moreover, the company said that this tool combines the power of large language models (LLMs) with users’ data from the Microsoft Graph — notes, calendars, emails, chats, documents, meetings, and more — and the Microsoft 365 apps to turn their words into a powerful productivity tool.

    MS Education Academy

All of this is done in accordance with the company’s existing enterprise data security and privacy commitments.

Further, users can also ask the AI assistant to create a plan for an event or generate topics and talking points for meetings in OneNote.

However, the tech giant hasn’t announced exactly when Copilot will be available in OneNote.

Microsoft initially announced its AI-powered Copilot for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Power Platform, and Viva last month.

For instance, the Copilot in Word “writes, edits, summarises and creates right alongside people as they work,” it added.

With the help of natural language commands, Copilot in PowerPoint makes the production process possible by transforming concepts into a designed presentation.

  • India among top three markets for AI-powered Bing preview: Microsoft official

India among top three markets for AI-powered Bing preview: Microsoft official

    [ad_1]

Washington: India has emerged as one of the top three markets for Microsoft’s new Bing preview, which has ChatGPT incorporated into it, and is its biggest image creator market, a senior company official has said, asserting that the search engine is much better than its rival Google.

Powered by ChatGPT, Microsoft launched the new Bing preview on February 7. ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI and launched in November 2022.

“Search has changed and will change. It’s not going away. Just like when television came into existence, radio didn’t go away, but TV got a lot more excitement. Same will happen here. The new capabilities of AI of chat of answers are now increasingly exciting because they’re helping answer questions that search didn’t do. And with Bing, we are completely unique in that leadership today,” Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president and consumer chief marketing officer of Microsoft told PTI.

    MS Education Academy

Microsoft, under its Indian-American CEO Satya Nadella, has a vision about the world moving from search engines to what it thinks of “as your co-pilot” for the web. That does four things: do better search, give answers to questions, chat and create content.

“We’re now having over 100 million daily activities on Bing. We are in 169 countries and India is one of the top three markets for us in this new Bing preview. In fact, India is the top image creator market, based on users using the feature, which is really pretty neat,” Mehdi said.

“So, of all the countries in the world, India’s the top. With some of these visual capabilities, one of the things we also announced this last week is knowledge cards. So that you can now get richer views of the searches. We are seeing a Bollywood actor Kiara Advani as the top search in knowledge cards with other actors rounding out in the Indian market. So, seeing great engagement there (in India),” he said.

Responding to a question, he said, the Indian market is very active as people in the country are using many of the new features that Microsoft has recently launched.

The new Bing has been receiving very positive feedback from its users, he said.

“The feedback is overwhelmingly positive as people prefer it as a new way to search, not just the answers, but the ability to chat and search. That’s an important thing because it marks a difference between us and Google,” he said.

“Google is trying to say that the chat has nothing to do with search and they’re separate products. We think they’re one integrated product. … In chat we got a lot of feedback about people wanting to use it for more than just search,” he said.

People want to do social entertainment and want to be able to talk to the AI chatbot, Mehdi said, adding Microsoft continues to improve the factual accuracy of answers.

“Because while it can be very creative, there are still areas where we can do a better job. Things like math questions, things like searches about individual people, we are still doing more work there,” he said.

Some of the things like knowledge cards and stories are something very unique to Bing, which Google doesn’t do, he said.

“When you do a search, we can now give you a much richer answer of what that looks like. We can give you, for example, five images of the thing you’re looking for. So, if you’re searching, for example, Kara Advani, we can give you the actor and we can show you various images in the knowledge card, a lot of information,” he said.

“So we are automating particular answers for the Indian market for the top searches, whether that’s actors or movie stars or whether it’s top news in India or top travel sites in India. We’re doing a lot of those special cards for India,” Mehdi said.

Observing that search is still a magical tool, Mehdi said this has evolved and now it is also being used for planning and getting answers to complicated questions.

Bing with the new AI can respond to complicated questions which regular searches cannot do, he said.

“One of the things that we’ve made progress with Bing is we’re now able to answer those questions, many of those questions that Google cannot do because we’re using ChatGPT to help refine… because we’re using AI to help answer the question,” he said.

Google has taken a different approach, so far, he said.

“They have a very separate chat product called Bard that’s different from Google search. They haven’t done any of the AI work in Google search. We’ve brought that right in. So, we have a much better offering now for people. And we think that is the future of bringing search and chat and creation together. That’s why our vision’s so different from their vision,” Mehdi said.

He noted that the latest development would have an impact on the news industry as well.

“A lot of how the news industry has worked with search today is that there’s a very delicate balance of …do great journalism like yourself, then someone searches for the latest news, let’s say in Israel, something happened. And then there might be a snippet of information and then I click on it to go to the story,” he said.

“Now with AI and with chat, you can get even more of a clear answer, but not necessarily the article or the great reporting. That will change a little bit. What we are doing is we’re providing links now to drive more content and more traffic to people.

“I think what’ll happen is we’ll see more traffic go to news agencies and new publishers because of what we’re doing in Bing to help better get the answer. But it will change the advertising model. We think there’ll be fewer ads that will be more relevant and have higher returns,” Mehdi said.

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Microsoft has added a green screen feature in Teams, which will provide an enhanced virtual background effect during meetings.

“Microsoft Teams now supports a green screen feature which provides an enhanced virtual background effect. Green screen improves the sharpness and definition of the virtual background effect around your face, head, ears, and hair. It also allows you to show a prop or other object in your hand to be more visible to other meeting participants,” Jan Steberl, Microsoft Teams program manager, said in a blogpost.

Moreover, the company said that the green screen will require a solid colour screen or a background wall behind users.A

    MS Education Academy

“The screen or background wall must be flat without stains or other irregularities. Users must apply a background effect in Teams meetings to enable the green screen effect and should carefully select the backdrop colour so that the effect is applied correctly and better quality is achieved,” Microsoft said.

The green screen feature is available now for everyone in the public preview channel of Microsoft Teams.

The company also mentioned that the feature is only supported on Windows and macOS devices with Intel chips.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has rolled out ‘Avatars’ in a public preview in Teams.

“Avatars for Microsoft Teams offers an alternative to the current binary option of video or no video,” the tech giant said in a blogpost.

Microsoft to launch cheaper Xbox expandable storage cards: Report

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Microsoft is reportedly preparing to launch its new and cheaper Xbox expandable storage options from other manufacturers.

Earlier, a new Western Digital 1TB expansion card for Xbox Series S/X consoles was spotted on Best Buy which was priced at $179.99, reports The Verge.

The tech giant first introduced Xbox expandable storage cards with its Xbox Series S/X consoles almost three years ago.

    MS Education Academy

The 1TB cards had a $219.99 price tag and were made exclusively by Seagate.

“While we’ve seen 512GB and 2TB options appear from Seagate, prices have stubbornly remained high, despite similar storage for PS5 consoles dropping significantly,” the report said.

It is essential that there be a second Xbox expandable storage manufacturer, as this should help to stabilise costs.

Moreover, it is still unclear when Western Digital’s new 1TB expansion card for Xbox will be available, the report added.

Last month, the tech giant had stopped its Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscription platforms, which allowed users to try the service for $1 for the first month before upgrading to more expensive plans.

Microsoft introduces ‘Bing Image Creator’ powered by OpenAI’s DALL-E

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Microsoft has introduced a new feature ‘Bing Image Creator’ to the new Bing and Edge preview, which allows users to create an image simply by using their own words to describe the picture they want to see — powered by an advanced version of the Open AI’s DALL-E model.

Bing Image Creator integrated into Bing chat has started to roll out to Bing preview users, also it is available in Microsoft Edge from the Image Creator icon in the sidebar for both desktop and mobile users around the world in English.

Moreover, the company said that it will soon integrate Image Creator into Edge from the new Bing button in chat mode in the preview version of Edge.

“By typing in a description of an image, providing additional context like location or activity, and choosing an art style, Image Creator will generate an image from your own imagination. It’s like your creative copilot. Just type something like ‘draw an image’ or ‘create an image’ as a prompt in chat to get creating a visual for a newsletter to friends or as inspiration for redecorating your living room,” Microsoft said in a blogpost.

Along with the new image generator, Bing is getting two new search features — Visual Stories and Knowledge Cards 2.0.

“To support the growing demand for more visual search experiences, we are also making Stories and Knowledge Cards 2.0 available to all Bing users,” the company said.

Knowledge Cards 2.0 is an AI-powered infographic-inspired experience that provides fun facts and key information at a glance.

Microsoft may add Crypto Wallet feature to Edge

    [ad_1]

San Francisco, March 19 (IANS) Microsoft is reportedly working on integrating a Crypto Wallet feature into its Edge browser, which will allow users to store, send, and receive crypto funds, as well as store NFTs.

The new Crypto Wallet feature, which was first spotted by a Twitter user, appears to be still in development, with references to Microsoft internal testing, reports ‘Windows Central’.

The wallet is non-custodial and is integrated directly into Edge’s existing wallet feature for storing payment cards.

It comes secured by a password, along with a trusted recovery method if users ever lose their password, the report said.

After signing up, the users will have access to all their assets, including crypto funds, price trends, and the ability to send or receive crypto using known addresses, and names.

Meanwhile, Microsoft will soon accelerate the adoption of multi-factor authentication (MFA) for its 365 Cloud productivity platform by incorporating MFA capabilities into the Outlook email client.

According to a new Microsoft 365 roadmap entry, users will be able to complete MFA requests for its 365 apps directly in the Outlook app with the help of a new feature called Authenticator Lite.

Users can use Authenticator Lite to add an extra layer of security to their Outlook logins for work or school.

Microsoft to unveil GPT-4 next week with AI videos

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Microsoft plans to release GPT-4 as early as next week, with the ability to create AI-generated videos from simple text prompts.

Andreas Braun, Chief Technology Officer at Microsoft Germany, recently confirmed that GPT-4 will be unveiled next week at an event called — AI in Focus — Digital Kickoff, reports Windows Central.

“We will introduce GPT-4 next week, where we have multimodal models that will offer completely different possibilities – for example, videos,” Braun was quoted as saying.

The report said that GPT-4 is the next iteration of OpenAI’s Large Language Model (LLM), and it should be significantly more powerful than GPT-3.5, which powers the current version of ChatGPT.

ChatGPT and other GPT-3.5-powered technologies are currently limited to text-based responses.

However, Braun’s comments imply that this may change with the release of GPT-4.

The multimodal models of the LLM could pave the way for video production and other types of content, according to the report.

Meanwhile, the AI-powered Bing search engine has surpassed 100 million daily active users, as ChatGPT’s integration into Bing has helped the company grow its usage within a month like never before.

Its rival Google Search engine has more than 1 billion daily active users.

Roughly one-third of daily Bing preview users are using AI chat daily.

  • OpenAI now a maximum-profit company controlled by Microsoft: Musk

OpenAI now a maximum-profit company controlled by Microsoft: Musk

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Elon Musk on Friday criticised Microsoft for making profits via OpenAI, a non-profit organisation created by him.

The AI chatbot ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI which is now a Microsoft company, has become a rage and the tech giant is infusing $10 billion into it to make it more useful for across industries.

Musk said that OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it “Open” AI), a non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google.

“But now it has become a closed-source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft. Not what I intended at all,” the Twitter CEO posted.

He responded to a follower who said: “Elon Musk says that AI is ‘one of the biggest risks’ to civilisation and needs to be regulated. He co-founded OpenAI.”

ChatGPT is an advanced form of AI that is powered by the GPT-3 large language model. It is programmed to recognise human language and generate responses based on massive amounts of data.

According to Musk, “ChatGPT has illustrated to people just how advanced AI has become. AI has been advanced for a while. It just didn’t have a user interface that was accessible to most people”.

Musk stepped down from OpenAI’s board of directors in 2018 and no longer owns a stake in the company.

“Initially, it was created as an open-source nonprofit. Now it is closed-source and for-profit. I don’t have an open stake in OpenAI, nor am I on the board, nor do I control it in any way,” he mentioned.

As part of his decision to create OpenAI, Musk stated that Google wasn’t paying enough attention to AI safety.
