  • MeT Predicts Another Spell Of Snowfall, Wet Condition Till 31 Jan For J&K – Kashmir News

    Srinagar, Jan 29 : The weatherman has predicted fresh snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, saying that a fresh Western Disturbance is affecting the Union Territory from today (29 Jan 2023).

    Yesterday, on 28 jan, Deputy Director Meteorological department (MeT) said that there is a possibility of fresh snowfall in J&K, especially in the higher reaches of the Union Territory.

    He said that the main activity would be from January 29 evening or night, adding that the wet weather conditions are expected in J&K parts from today, which would continue till January 31.

    The wet weather is expected till the end of this month, which marks the end of 40-day harshest winter period-Chila-i-Kalan.

    Meanwhile, the MeT has issued yellow warning for J&K on January 30

    The MeT said that widespread moderate snow or Rain is expected in Jammu with heavy snowfall in Pirpanjal, South Kashmir, Doda-Kistawar and other areas.

    On Jan 31, there is a possibility of light to moderate snowfall at scattered places.

    It further added that the fresh snow spell may cause snow avalanches in avalanche prone areas during the above period.

    It may also affect surface and Air transportation on January 30, adding that the power supply would also get affected.

    The MeT advised people not to venture out in avalanche prone areas, unless emergency and also appealed intending passengers to travel after confirmation of road status from concerned Traffic Police.

    Moreover, the traffic on Srinagar-Jammu highway remained affected for 34 minutes today due to shooting stones at Mehar Passi.

    The officials said that the highway was open for vehicular movement and was closed for only 34 minutes due to shooting stones at Mehar Passi.

    However, the Mughal Road and Srinagar-Jammu highway continued to remain closed for the vehicular movement since the first week of this month—(KNO)

    Mercury Rises At Most Places As Chillai-Kalan Nears To End

    Srinagar, Jan 28 (GNS): As the 40-day harsh winter period, Chilla-i-Kalan, nears to an end, the weather department on Saturday issued a yellow warning for heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir on January 30.

    A meteorological department official here told GNS that light snow and rain was expected at scattered places in the next 24 hours.

    On January 30, the MeT department forecast widespread moderate snow and rain ( in Jammu) with “heavy” snowfall in Pirpanjal, South Kashmir, Doda-Kistawar etc.( more than 75% chances)
    On January 31, the MeT official said, light to moderate snow and rain was expected at scattered places.

    There are four types of colour codes signifying the level of caution: green which means no action, yellow—situation to be watched, orange–government agencies need to be prepared for severe weather and red –action needed by the agencies.

    He said the weather system may cause snow avalanches in the areas prone to them. It may likely to affect surface and air transportation on Monday, he said. Power supply may also get affected.

    “People are advised not to venture out in avalanche prone areas, unless emergency,” he said, adding, “Passengers are advised to travel after confirmation of road status from concerned traffic police”.

    Regarding temperature, he said that Srinagar recorded a low of 1.7°C against 1.2°C on the previous night. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 2.7°C for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 0.2°C against minus 0.6°C on the previous night and it was 2.8°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 6.9°C against minus 4.3°C on the previous night and it was 0.8°C below normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of minus 0.7°C against minus 0.9°C on the previous night and it was 1.9°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 7.2°C against minus 8.6°C on the previous night and it was 0.3°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at minus 2.6°C against minus 3.7°C on the previous night and it was above 0.1°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 6.1°C against 5.5°C on the previous night. It was 2.6°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal recorded a low of minus 0.4°C (below normal by 0.2°C), Batote 1.7°C (above normal by 0.8°C), Katra 6.6°C (0.3°C below normal) and Bhadarwah minus 1.4°C (0.6°C below normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 13.6°C and minus 14.8°C respectively, the official said.

    SRINAGAR: The MeT office on Saturday forecast a generally cloudy sky in Jammu division with likelihood of rain or snow in Kashmir division during the next 24 hours.

    According to a MeT official, the union territory experienced a dry weather on Friday.

    “Generally cloudy sky in Jammu division with chances of light to moderate rain/snow is likely in Kashmir division during the next 24 hours”, the official said.

    Meanwhile, Srinagar registered 1.7 degrees Celcius, Pahalgam minus 6.9 and Gulmarg minus 7.2 degree as the minimum temperature.

    In Ladakh region, Kargil reeled under minus 14.8 degree and Leh was at minus 13.6.

    Jammu recorded 6.1 degrees, Katra 6.6, Batote 2.5, while Banihal and Bhaderwah clocked minus 0.4 and minus 1.4 degree respectively.(IANS)

    Srinagar, Jan 27 (GNS): Mercury dropped at all places barring Srinagar even as the weatherman on Friday said that isolated to “widespread” light rain and snow was expected for two days from Sunday evening in Jammu and Kashmir. 

    A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a low of 1.2°C, the same as on the last night. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 2.2°C for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of minus 0.6°C against minus 0.4°C on the previous night and it was 3.5°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 4.3°C against minus 2.4°C on the previous night and it was 1.8°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of minus 0.9°C against minus 0.6°C on the previous night and it was 1.7°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 8.6°C against minus 10.4°C on the previous night and it was 1.1°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at minus 3.7°C against minus 1.7°C on the previous night and it was above 1.2°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 5.5°C against 6.3°C on the previous night. It was 3.2°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal recorded a low of 0.6°C (below normal by 0.4°C), Batote minus 0.1°C (below normal by 1.8°C), Katra 6.0°C (0.9°C below normal) and Bhadarwah minus 0.4°C (0.4°C below normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh recorded a low of minus 11.2°C, the official said.

    The MeT said that light to widespread rain and snow was likely from January 29th night-30 ( 60%).

    He said in the last 24 hours till 0830 hours, Qazigund received 5.0cm of snow, Pahalgam 3.3cm and Kokernag 1.0cm.

    Hyderabad: 13th descendent of Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji, former MP Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje, paid a courtesy call to Telangana Chief Minister Sri K Chandrashekhar Rao at Pragati Bhavan on Thursday.

    CM KCR welcomed Sambhajiraje by presenting a shawl and a flower bouquet at Pragati Bhavan. The Chief Minister hosted lunch to Sambhajiraje and held discussions on many issues.

    Sambhajiraje inquired about the public welfare and development achieved by the Telangana state within a short time. He further enquired about the operational procedures followed by the Telangana state government in providing big welfare to the people of all sections including farmers, SC, ST, BC and Minorities.

    The former MP also expressed his wish that Telangana development model and welfare schemes be implemented in Maharashtra.

    Apart from development issues, CM KCR and Sambhajiraje had a lengthy discussion on the political situation in the country. The CM and former MP opined that an innovative agenda aimed at public welfare is necessary to come before the people for the development of the people and for the integrity of the country. CM KCR and Sambhajiraje decided to meet again and discuss all the issues if necessary depending on the occasion.

    On this occasion, CM KCR and Sambhajiraje recollected the services rendered by the ancestors of Shambhajiraje from Shivaji Maharaj to Sahu Maharaj to the country. CM KCR opined that their rule towards equality and public welfare will remain in the history of the country with golden letters. In the discussion, CM KCR made it clear that, with their inspiration, people’s rule will continue in Telangana without caste and religious discrimination.

    On this occasion, Shambhajiraje also presented the book ‘Rajarshi Sahu Chhatrapati’ to CM KCR.

    Quoting a meteorological department official news agency GNS reported that Srinagar recorded a low of minus 2.3°C against last night’s minus 3.4°C. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, is normal for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of minus 0.6°C against 1.0°C on the previous night and it was 3.3°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 8.8°C against minus 4.7°C on the previous night and it was 1.1°C below normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of minus 3.5°C against minus 2.7°C on the previous night and it was 0.1°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 9.6°C against minus 9.6°C on the previous night and it was 1.3°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    From January 29-30th, the MeT department has forecast widespread moderate to heavy rain and snow.

    He said that in the last 24 hours till 0830 hours Pahalgam and Gulmarg received 0.5cm and 0.8cm of snowfall respectively. Reports said that snowfall was also received from some upper reaches in the Valley.
