  • Telangana: KCR tells party members to prepare for early polls

Telangana: KCR tells party members to prepare for early polls

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister and BRS national president K Chandrashekar Rao on Thursday told his party leaders to prepare for the state elections which he said, will be held in October this year.

According to sources, the state cabinet could ask the Governor to dissolve the Assembly, in which case the elections would be held within the time period as stipulated by the Constitution.

KCR talked of the “impending” elections while speaking to office-bearers at the BRS’s general body meeting on the party’s founding day, in Hyderabad.

    MS Education Academy

Addressing the meeting, the Telangana chief minister claimed the strides that the state has made show that anything could be achieved in a “parliamentary system”.

“Now, we are moving ahead with the vision of putting the country on the path to progress with a slogan of ‘Aab Ki Bar Kisan Sarkar’,” he added, underlining the party’s ambition to mark its political and electoral footprints beyond Telangana.

BRS won 63 seats in the first Assembly election since the state was founded. It bettered its performance in the subsequent Assembly polls, bagging 88 seats.

“The BRS will win more than 100 seats in the next (Assembly) elections. Returning to power in Telangana won’t be a challenging task for us but the priority should be to win more Assembly seats than we did the last time,” the CM said.

“We will put out television advertisements and also produce (promotional) films in future to help the party reach out effectively to the masses. If necessary, the party will also launch a TV channel of its own,” the CM said.

He directed BRS leaders to identify “idle” government land in all the districts and inform his office about it so that the plots could be distributed to the poor for building houses.

“In some villages, government plots are lying idle. Submit the details of such land with survey numbers at my office. Suitable land will be distributed to the poor so that they could build houses,” he said.

Earlier, on Thursday, KCR laid floral tributes before the statue of Telangana Talli at Telangana Bhavan in Hyderabad. Later, the BRS Supremo unveiled the party flag.

The meeting of the party representatives began with an inaugural speech by BRS Secretary General and MP K Keshava Rao.

Karnataka polls: Family members of leaders in BJP’s 3rd list, resentment still brews

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The BJP on Monday released a third list of candidates for the May 10 Karnataka Assembly polls, accommodating the family members of three senior leaders amid the resentment and rebellion in the state unit.

However, senior leader S.A. Ramdas, miffed with the denial of ticket from Krishnaraja constituency in Mysuru city, stated that he will announce his decision on future course of action on Tuesday.

The BJP has announced candidates for 10 constituencies, thus finalising 222 candidates of the total 224. The party is yet to announce candidates for Shivamogga constituency represented by former minister K.S. Eshwarappa and Manvi constituency.

  • HC allows family to alienate property already notified, to treat terminally ill members

HC allows family to alienate property already notified, to treat terminally ill members

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: A family living in the city has been allowed by the High Court of Bengaluru to alienate a part of their property even though it has already been notified for acquisition.

The Court’s exceptional order came as three of the family members are cancer patients who need timely treatment.

Justice Krishna S Dixit in his judgement on March 27 said, “In the exceptional circumstances of this case, denying relief to terminally ailing citizens, especially when their property in question is the only means of holding the body and soul together by securing medical treatment, would render the constitutional guarantee to life a mere farce.

    MS Education Academy

“To put it in the words of late Antonin Scalia of the US Supreme Court, the Constitution will be nothing more than a ‘parchment guarantee’. Therefore, petitioners need to be permitted to alienate or encumber a reasonable portion of the property that is still in the initial process of acquisition so that they can keep their life boat afloat.”

Allowing the family to alienate 50 percent of the property, the HC in its judgment said, “If the petitioners are not permitted to encumber or alienate the subject property which is their only source of income, from which the required medical treatment can be hopefully bought, they may fall prey to the predatory disease of the kind; thus, the long pendency of acquisition process itself would imperil their life unless some ‘exit strategy’ is worked out within the framework of the law consistent with the requirement of justice of the times, in which petitioners are placed by the conspiracy of circumstances beyond their control.”

Five members of the family had approached the HC seeking permission to alienate their property of 2 acres and 3 guntas of land which was notified for acquisition under the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Act.

The petition was filed “since the funds are urgently needed for the medical treatment of some of them who are suffering from the hereditary terminal disease i.e., cancer of varying stages.”

Ruling in their favour, the HC said, “Where the life of a citizen depends upon a certain property and the same is being taken away in an acquisition process, though lawfully launched, the delayed accomplishment of the said process and the delay that would eventually be brooked in the payment of compensation till such accomplishment happens, in the given circumstances of the case, would metaphorically amount to taking away the ‘oxygen mask’ from the gasping patient in the Intensive Care Unit.”

The five people who approached the court seeking relief are a 72-year-old woman and her four children. The woman and her two sons are suffering from cancer.

The only daughter is taking care of them, and the 2 acre 3 guntas of property was the only source of income for the family.

The counsel for Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) informed the court that the acquisition process was delayed due to disputes with other property owners and could not be speeded up.

The buyers of the property would have the right to claim compensation from KIADB when the acquisiton is complete.

“The buyers/mortgagees shall have right to claim compensation or its enhancement, should acquisition of the property be accomplished in due course and in the case of delayed acquisition, to lay a claim for interest,” the HC said.

  • Tennessee GOP members move to oust 3 Dems after gun protest

Tennessee GOP members move to oust 3 Dems after gun protest

    [ad_1]

    image

Republican Reps. Bud Hulsey, Gino Bulso, and Andrew Farmer filed the resolutions. They successfully requested Monday that the House expedite the process and vote on the resolutions Thursday.

Despite support from the Republican supermajority, their requests sparked outrage among supporters watching in the gallery. Their loud jeers led House Speaker Cameron Sexton to demand that they be removed by state troopers. Also during the turmoil, several lawmakers engaged in a confrontation on the House floor.

Jones later accused another member of stealing his phone and trying to “incite a riot with his fellow members.”

Sexton deemed Jones out of order and cut off Jones’ microphone.

Hundreds of protesters packed the Capitol last week calling for the Republican-led Statehouse to pass gun control measures in response to the Nashville school shooting that resulted in the deaths of six people. As the chants echoed throughout the Capitol, Jones, Johnson and Pearson approached the front of the House chamber with a bullhorn.

As the three shared the bullhorn and cheered on the crowd, Sexton, a Republican, quickly called for a recess. He later vowed the three would face consequences. Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Karen Camper described their actions as “good trouble,” a reference to the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis’ guiding principal.

By Monday, Sexton confirmed that the three lawmakers had been stripped of their committee assignments and said more punishments could be on the way. A few hours later, House Republican Caucus Chairman Jeremy Faison referred to Jones as the “former representative” during the evening session.

Pearson and Jones are both freshman lawmakers. Johnson has served in the House since 2019. All three have been highly critical of the Republican supermajority. Jones was temporarily banned from the Tennessee Capitol in 2019 after throwing a cup of liquid at former House Speaker Glen Casada and other lawmakers while protesting the bust of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest inside the Capitol.

Expelling lawmakers is an extraordinary action inside the Tennessee Capitol. Just two other House members have ever been ousted from the chamber since the Civil War.
