    Lucknow: Continuing his pitch for opposition unity ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Bihar Chief Minister Bihar Nitish Kumar and his deputy Tejashwi Yadav met Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow on Monday evening.

    Talking to reporters after the meeting, Nitish Kumar said that time had come for all parties to come together and throw out forces that had done nothing for the country.

    “There is no work being done in the country – the only work is publicity. In Uttar Pradesh, no work has been done except publicity,” he said.

    Nitish Kumar made it clear that he was no a Prime Ministerial candidate and said that his effort was only to bring the maximum number of parties on one platform and ensure removal of BJP from power.

    “We will have to work together and our mission will be successful in 2024. UP and Bihar will play a major role together in this mission,” he asserted.

    The Bihar chief minister said that talks in this regard had been very ‘positive and encouraging’ with Akhilesh Yadav.

    Earlier in the day, the Bihar leaders met West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee in Howrah and discussed issued related to opposition unity.

    Lucknow: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who has taken upon himself the task of uniting Opposition forces against the BJP-led government at the Centre, met Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Monday.

    He left Patna to meet with his Bengal counterpart at her office in the State secretariat ‘Nabanna’ today.

    He is also set to meet Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav at the Samajwadi Party headquarters today at 4 pm, officials said.

    The Samajwadi Party’s National General Secretary Ram Gopal Yadav and Shivpal Singh Yadav will also be present in today’s meeting.

    Earlier on April 12, Nitish Kumar had met with Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge and former MP Rahul Gandhi in the national capital.

    The meeting was seen as the major step to laying the groundwork for a grand Opposition alliance ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha elections.

    Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Rahul Gandhi said it was a “historic step” towards Opposition unity and for an “ideological fight”.

    Rahul Gandhi, who posted a picture of himself with Kharge and JDU and RJD leaders, said they are “standing together, will fight together for India”.

    “In this battle of ideology, a historic step has been taken today towards Opposition unity. (We are) standing together, will fight together – for India!” Rahul Gandhi had said in a tweet after the meeting with the Bihar chief minister.

    CM Mamata Banerjee is also leaving no stone unturned in closing in ranks with other parties ahead of the 2024 polls, as she met Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav at her residence in Kolkata last month.

    Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi’s (BRS) working president and state IT minister KT Rama Rao on Sunday informed the upcoming constituency-level meetings, held for the first time, will witness the proposal of six political resolutions on important issues.

    Ahead of the BRS constituency-level meetings on April 25, KTR held a teleconference with party leaders to discuss the agenda and lay out detailed plans to make it a success.

    Providing suggestions and instructions, KTR said the six political resolutions will discuss Agriculture, Welfare, Palle Pragathi-Pattana Pragathi, Education-Employment, BJP’s failures, and local issues.

    He directed the party cadre should involve different age groups to spread awareness by discussing the progress achieved in farming through various state government welfare programmes, and irrigation projects. “Along with Rythu Bandhu, Rythu Bima schemes which became role models for the entire country, the Centre’s anti-farmer policies should also be discussed,” he said

    “The resolution on Welfare will cover the impact of these schemes on different groups, including women, people with disabilities, and those receiving Aasara pension for the elderly,” he further added.

    KTR said, “Had Prime Minister Modi fulfilled his promise of creating 2 crore jobs annually, there would be no need for BJP to hold an unemployment march.”

    He said that detailed information on the state government’s programmes related to primary and higher education will also be provided.

    Around 4 lakh leaders of the party from village to constituency level will participate in the meeting. It will be attended by 3,000 to 3,500 party activists in each constituency.

    The upcoming constituency-level meetings will serve as a platform to sound the bugle for the upcoming assembly elections.

    Bengaluru: BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi on Friday met several Congress leaders here confirming the rumours that he will be jumping ship soon.

    He met the Karnataka Congress in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, state President DK Shivakumar and Opposition leader Siddaramaiah.

    Savadi was denied a ticket by the BJP from the Athani constituency in Belagavi. Instead, Mahesh Kumatalli, who joined the BJP through ‘Operation Lotus’, has been allotted the ticket. Savadi claimed that the party has done injustice to him, and also said that he was not contacted by any leader from New Delhi.

    He arrived in Bengaluru on a special flight booked by Shivakumar along with Congress MLC Channaraj Hattiholi. Lakshman Savadi has maintained that he is not meeting any of the BJP leaders in Bengaluru.

    Lakshman Savadi maintained that he is holding talks with Congress leaders and sharing his thoughts with them. Randeep Singh Surjewala stated that no decision has been taken yet on the matter of Lakshman Savadi joining the Congress

    “The discussion is ongoing. It is a social call. Lakshman is a seasoned politician in the state,” he added.

    Lakshmi Hebbalkar, the Congress MLA from Belagavi Rural constituency has stated that Lakshman Savadi is a seasoned politician, who was in the top post in BJP government and his entry to Congress would strengthen the party.

    According to sources in Congress, Shivakumar is planning to utilize the opportunity to deliver blows to his political opponent BJP leader from Belagavi, Ramesh Jarkiholi. The development is likely to strengthen the Congress to win more seats in Belagavi district which has 18 seats.

    New Delhi: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, CPI leader D. Raja and other leaders here on Thursday amid talks of opposition unity.

    Nitish Kumar is on a three-day visit to New Delhi to bring the non-BJP parties together to fight against the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

    Yechury, while speaking to the media, said that his party and the Left have always believed that democratic parties with secular ideology need to unite.

    He said: “Today, we have to save our country, our constitution and democracy. For this, there is a need to defeat the BJP and the present government at the Centre. Our basic objective is to stop the division of anti-BJP votes. For this all parties need to come together.”

    He stated that a joint meeting of all the parties would be held soon wherein the whole outline would be decided.

    Yechury said: “We have to save the Constitution today and for that we have to defeat the BJP in the 2024 elections. Talks are on with other political parties as well… The front that is going to be formed will always be there after the elections.”

    Yechury tweeted: “With Bihar CM Shri Nitish Kumar to carry forward the efforts to unite secular democratic parties to safeguard the Indian Republic, Constitution and Democracy, severely assaulted by the BJP & Modi govt. Defeat the BJP in order to save India & people’s livelihoods.”

    Commenting on the seat-sharing formula, Yechury said that the political alliance will be decided by the CPI(M) according to the circumstances in the states. He added that seats will be distributed as per the political situation in different states.

    Citing the example of Kerala, he said that the BJP has no hold there, so the competition will be between the Congress and the Left parties, but in the states where the BJP has to be fought, the opposition parties will coordinate on the seats.

    New Delhi: Union Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman met IMF Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath in Washington D.C., during which she noted the monetary body’s concerns on key downside risks to the economy including financial sector stress, inflation and geo-political fragmentation as well as faltering growth in China.

    The meeting took place on Tuesday on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings.

    According to the Finance Ministry, Sitharaman congratulated Gopinath for accelerating India’s work on the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable along with the World Bank and reiterated New Delhi’s commitment to foster efforts to address growing debt vulnerabilities.

    Sitharaman also acknowledged IMF’s support to India’s G20 Presidency in the form of inputs towards developing evidence-based policy guidance.

    Meanwhile, the top IMF official congratulated the Union Minister on the “fruitful discussions that translated the February consensus on the need for a globally coordinated policy response on crypto assets into an agreed set of guiding principles and an action plan on crypto assets”, said the Ministry.

    Taking to Twitter following the meeting, Gopinath said: “Had a very good discussion with Finance Minister Sitharaman at the IMF-World Bank spring meetings, to discuss the progress being made under India’s G20 Presidency on debt issues and crypto related challenges.”

    Lucknow: UNICEF India representative Cynthia McCaffrey on Tuesday met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and discussed the status of the ongoing health, education and nutrition programmes being run in collaboration with the UN agency.

    McCaffrey, who met Adityanath at his residence, said that UNICEF-India was taking forward many programmes in the field of social health, education, women and child nutrition in Uttar Pradesh with the support of the state government.

    UNICEF is also supporting the local administration in aspirational districts, she said, adding the UN agency was ready to provide technical and academic support to the state government for new programmes in the future.

    Appreciating the state’s efforts in social health, McCaffrey said there has been a significant decline in the maternal, infant and neonatal mortality rates in the state in the last six years.

    Availability of health services increased even in remote villages due to planned efforts while awareness programs are yielding good results, the UNICEF India representative said, adding that this success of Uttar Pradesh is inspiring.

    McCaffrey said that Chief Minister Adityanath has adopted a wonderful strategy for the eradication of Japanese Encephalitis.

    The state government has succeeded in preventing the disease in 38 districts. This is a great achievement, she said.

    Referring to the Covid management in different countries, McCaffrey said the way the Uttar Pradesh administration dealt with the high population density and various social challenges is highly commendable.

    Uttar Pradesh has presented the best model of Covid management, she said.

    She also praised the efforts being made under the leadership of CM Adityanath in the direction of women’s safety, respect and self-reliance.

    While congratulating the UNICEF representative on her arrival in the state, Adityanath praised the cooperation being received from the UN agency in the field of public health, including dealing with encephalitis, water-borne diseases, Covid management and proposed to cooperate even further with the organisation on such programmes.
