DGPs meet: PM Modi calls for exchange of data across agencies

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday emphasised the importance of the National Data Governance Framework for smoothening the process of data exchange across agencies.

Addressing the all India DGPs conference on its last day, PM Modi called for greater cooperation between the state police and the Central agencies. The three-day conference started on January 20.

He further suggested making the police force more sensitive and training them in emerging technologies.

The Prime Minister suggested that “while we should further leverage technological solutions like biometrics, there is also a need to further strengthen traditional policing mechanisms like foot patrols, etc”.

He recommended repealing obsolete criminal laws and building standards for police organisations across states, and suggested prison reforms to improve jail management.

Modi further discussed strengthening the border as well as coastal security by organising frequent visits by officials.

He suggested replicating the model of the DGPs and IGs conference at the state and district levels for discussing emerging challenges and evolving best practices among their teams.

WFI general body meet in Ayodhya cancelled as govt suspends body’s activities

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The general body meeting of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), scheduled to take place in Ayodhya on Sunday, has been cancelled after the Sports ministry suspended all the ongoing activities of the federation and appointed an Oversight Committee to take over the day-to day functioning.

The committee will probe the allegations of sexual harassment and corruption against the WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The WFI chief will step aside until the probe is completed.

“The Ministry of Sports has communicated to the Wrestling Federation of India on Saturday that in view of the Government’s decision to appoint an Oversight Committee to investigate the various allegations raised by athletes against the Federation, WFI will suspend all ongoing activities with immediate effect, unless the Oversight Committee is formally appointed and takes over the day-to-day functioning of WFI,” the ministry said in a statement.

“In view of the direction to suspend all activities immediately, the Sports Ministry has asked WFI to also cancel the ongoing Ranking Tournament in Gonda, UP. The Ministry has directed WFI to return the entry fees charged to participants for the ongoing event,” the statement read.

Notably, the protesting grapplers called off their protest after a meeting with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and getting an assurance of a detailed probe into the allegations.

Top Indian wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and other grapplers on January 18 staged a protest against the WFI. The 28-year-old Phogat alleged that Brij Bhushan Sharan had been harassing female wrestlers.

  • Telangana attracted Rs 21,000 cr investment during Davos meet

Telangana attracted Rs 21,000 cr investment during Davos meet

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana attracted investments worth Rs 21,000 crore during the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting at Davos where the state delegation was headed by state minister for information technology and industries, K.T. Rama Rao.

This was the fifth visit of Minister KTR to Davos, and like in the past his efforts to bring investments to the state have yielded fruitful results, claimed the government.

Presenting the growth story of Telangana and pitching for investments, KTR has participated in meetings with leaders of top global organisations, attended round tables and spoken at panel discussions and shared his thoughts on a wide array of subjects in the four-day trip. In addition to this, the minister also interacted with the Indian diaspora in Zurich and highlighted the progress of Telangana to the NRIs in Switzerland.

At a juncture where the global economy is on the brink of recession, Telangana managed to bag some big-ticket investments. The Telangana delegation was successful in showcasing the state as a global investment destination and gateway to India.

The Telangana pavilion grabbed the attention of many top companies with representatives of several global organisations visiting the stall.

Telangana pavilion presented information regarding Telangana’s geography, investments it attracted in the last eight years and initiatives of IT and Industry departments such as T-Hub and T-Works. Videos of various government programmes, policies and projects like Kaleshwaram played at the pavilion were a special attraction.

Sharing his experience of the visit, Minister KTR observed that the WEF is the right platform to introduce Telangana, a progressive state which has exceptional industrial policies and infrastructure and said that Telangana is strengthening its ties with companies on the WEF platform.

“All the meetings at the WEF were highly productive and we were able to attract Rs 21,000 crore at the meet,” said KTR.

He said that bringing huge investments to the state and thereby creating employment is the driving force. “I believe that all the new investments and meetings regarding prospective investments will yield favourable outcomes,” added KTR.

The big draw of this edition of Davos trip was the WEF coming forward to establish its first Indian centre in Hyderabad. This thematic centre will focus on life sciences and health care. This announcement further consolidates the city’s position as the hub for life sciences and pharmaceuticals.

Microsoft announced to set up three more data centres in Hyderabad with an investment of Rs 16,000 crore. Bharti Airtel Group said it would set up a large Hyperscale Data Centre in Hyderabad with Rs 2,000 crore.

Eurofins, a global leader in the pharma sector, announced the establishment of a state-of-the-art laboratory campus in Genome Valley with an outlay of Rs 1,000 crore. Other global companies such as PepsiCo, P&G, Allox, Apollo Tyres Ltd, WebPT, and Inspire Brands came forward with investments worth Rs 2,000 crore.

  • Biden to meet with McCarthy over avoiding debt ceiling ‘calamity’

Biden to meet with McCarthy over avoiding debt ceiling ‘calamity’

    [ad_1]

    biden 66824

But Biden’s remarks set off a back-and-forth later in the day that underscored the deep divide between the White House and House Republicans over how to approach the debt ceiling discussions.

McCarthy tweeted shortly afterward that he would accept a request to meet “and discuss a responsible debt ceiling increase to address irresponsible government spending.”

The White House responded in a statement issued later on Friday, where Jean-Pierre reiterated that “raising the debt ceiling is not a negotiation; it is an obligation of this country and its leaders to avoid economic chaos.”

“We are going to have a clear debate on two different visions for the country — one that cuts Social Security, and one that protects it — and the President is happy to discuss that with the Speaker,” Jean-Pierre said.

The development comes a day after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that the U.S. had reached its debt limit and would need to use special measures to avoid a default. Yellen has projected that Congress has until at least June to pass a debt ceiling increase.

Biden officials have insisted that Congress pass a clean debt ceiling increasing, arguing that it is one of the government’s basic duties and shouldn’t come with any conditions attached.

The U.S. has never defaulted on its debt. Failing to do so for the first time ever, Democrats and a wide swathe of economists have cautioned, would destroy the nation’s financial credibility, tank the stock market and throw the global economy into chaos.

But Republicans are signaling that they plan to force a showdown over the debt ceiling, in a bid to extract a host of deep spending cuts from the administration. McCarthy earlier this week urged Biden and Democratic congressional leaders to begin discussions on a potential deal.

On Friday, Biden also said that he would address what he called a “fundamental disagreement” over how to control spending as part of his State of the Union address. The White House has hammered Republicans repeatedly over their suggestions that the government cut funding for Medicare and Social Security as part of a debt ceiling deal.

“Their way to deal with cutting that debt is to cut social security, cut Medicaid,” Biden said. “These are the kind of debates that we’re going to have.”
