PM holds massive road-show in Bengaluru as BJP raises poll pitch

Bengaluru: With just four days left for Assembly polls in Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held a massive road show in the city, waving at a large number of enthusiastic crowd, who had lined up on both sides of the route.
The 26 km roadshow from Someshwar Bhavan RBI Ground in Bengaluru South to Malleshwaram’s Sankey Tank, was covered in about three hours.
Modi’s roadshow traversed through parts of south and central Bengaluru, touching about a dozen Assembly segments.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by Bengaluru South MP, Tejasvi Surya and Bengaluru Central MP, P C Mohan.
Standing on the specially designed vehicle, Modi greeted the crowd gathered on the sides of the roads and on nearby buildings, many of whom were seen chanting ‘Modi, Modi’, ‘Jai Bajarangbali’, ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ slogans and shouting loud cheers in what appeared to be a “festive atmosphere” in several places.
At many places, people showered flower petals as his cavalcade passed through the stretch slowly, amid sounds of drum beats. The Prime Minister too responded by showering the flower petals gathered on the vehicle, back at the crowd.
Massive arrangements had been made along the stretch, including erecting barricades, to ensure that the roadshow goes on smoothly. Tight security was put in place.
According to state BJP sources, tens of thousands of people had gathered along the roadside.

The entire distance was decked up with saffron hues as BJP flags were seen on either side of the road, and thousands of party workers and supporters too were wearing saffron shawls and caps. Saffron flag, which looked like the ‘Bhagwa flag’ with lord Hanuman’s face on it, was spotted at several places.
Cultural teams were also stationed at different places along the stretch to welcome Modi. A group of women ‘Pourakarmikas’ (civic workers) were seen gathered at a spot to greet Modi.
The much shorter roadshow, about 10 km, between Kempegowda statue at Thippasandra to Trinity circle, will be held on Sunday.
Keeping National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in mind, the BJP on Friday modified Modi’s two-day roadshow in Bengaluru, by scheduling the extensive event today and shorter one on May 7.
The roadshow, earlier scheduled to be held for eight hours on Saturday alone, was split into two parts on Saturday and Sunday to avoid inconvenience to the public.

Bandipora, May 01 (GNS): A residential house and a cowshed were completely gutted in a massive fire incident in Charwan area of Ajas in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district this evening.
Reports reaching GNS said that a residential house and a cowshed belonging to one Mubeen Ahmad Gojar Matravi, son of Ghulam Mohiuddin Gojar Matravi, got completely damaged in a massive fire incident.
Expressing their anguish against F&ES Department for ‘failing to reach the site’, a group of locals told GNS that despite timely intimation no one from the department turned out for help.
The locals in the meantime hailed Army’s 13 RR and expressed their gratitude towards them for their timely help which, according to them, prevented the fire from spreading to other houses in the vicinity. (GNS)

Gubbi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday held a massive roadshow here, waving at a large enthusiastic crowd along the route, as he sought people’s support, ahead of the May 10 Assembly polls in Karnataka.
Shah, standing on a specially designed vehicle accompanied by Tumakur Member of Parliament G S Basavaraj and other leaders, was greeted by people gathered on the sides of the roads and on nearby buildings.
A large number of party workers walked along with Shah’s vehicle holding BJP flags and shouting slogans praising BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, amid drum sounds.

At the end of the road shadow here in Tumakuru district, the Home Minister urged people to vote for the BJP candidate, and to ensure that a “double engine government” under the leadership of Modi comes to power.
Former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai have done a lot of work for Karnataka, he said, adding that the BJP government has ended four per cent Muslim reservation and has increased the quota of Vokkaligas, Lingayats, and SC/STs.
“If Congress comes to power, they will take back all these reservations (hiked) and once again bring in Muslim reservations. Do you want four per cent Muslim reservation? (to come back)”, he asked.
Highlighting measures taken by the BJP government for the benefit of Areca nut farmers, Shah said: “If you ensure a double engine government comes to power in Karnataka, Modi ji will once again become Prime Minister in 2024”.

AMSTERDAM — The world’s financial system needs a “massive adjustment” to cope with higher interest rates, and key rules will have to be revisited, according to a top global regulator.
Klaas Knot, chair of the Financial Stability Board, an international standard-setting body, told POLITICO that rising interest rates fueled problems at several regional U.S. banks and similar losses may show up elsewhere.
“The speed with which interest rates have changed, that, of course, implies a massive adjustment in the financial system,” the Dutchman said in an interview from his office in Amsterdam. He added it was unclear exactly where those losses would be.

“In many, many places of the financial system, that adjustment will go well because it has been well-anticipated and has been well-managed. But history teaches us that is not always the case everywhere.”
The warning of potential trouble ahead echoes fears of other global officials and comes after the failure of Silicon Valley Bank, a $200 billion lender to the tech sector, sparked contagion across U.S. regional banks. The subsequent market panic contributed to bringing down Credit Suisse in Europe, forcing the Swiss government to hastily merge the lender with UBS.
Any domino effect can have huge impacts for the economy, businesses and households.
“We’ve seen the impact of rapidly changing interest rates manifest in the second tier of the regional U.S. banks,” Knot said. “But I would be very surprised if that was the only sub-sector of the financial system where you would have a significant impact.”
Despite the turmoil, Knot said he was more worried about risks stashed at “nonbanks” — a term that encompasses investment funds, insurers, private equity, pension funds and hedge funds — where authorities have less visibility on hidden losses.
“If they are hidden for a very long period of time, sometimes the problem then grows so big, that it only becomes unhidden or visible when it’s too big to deal with,” he said.
The FSB boss pointed to financial players that took the wrong side of a bet on interest-rates and may now be nursing losses. “I hope, of course, that this is well-dispersed over the financial sector,” he said. “Where we are worried is specific concentrations of such risk.”
In particular, he said, those losses could be amplified when there is a mismatch between hard-to-sell assets and easy withdrawals, and borrowed money is used to juice returns.
That combination has worried authorities for some time — but Knot said this didn’t mean regulators are behind. For instance, the FSB, whose membership includes central bankers, financial regulators and finance ministries, will issue recommendations for open-ended investment funds in July.
Under the plans, regulators would get more powers to trigger restrictions in a crisis, rather than leaving those decisions in the hands of the fund manager.
Rewriting the rules
The financial rulebook will need to be revisited substantially in light of recent events, he said.
“It’s a mistake to see the regulatory framework as something that is fixed, and something that should not be touched,” he said. “The financial industry is not at all fixed, it is continuously evolving. So, the regulatory framework should evolve with the evolving risks.”
The Dutchman said this means revisiting assumptions about how quickly banks can sell assets to meet depositor withdrawals, the speed of those withdrawals in a digital era, and the reserves that have to be set aside to cover potential unrealized losses from interest-rate risks — all of which were factors in the U.S. bank collapses.

Russia kills at least 10, including toddler, in massive rocket attack on Ukraine

KYIV — Russia launched 23 missiles at Ukraine’s sleeping cities and towns in the early hours of Friday, killing multiple civilians, including a toddler.
It was the first massive Russian barrage in weeks.
Ukraine’s Air Defense Forces reported shooting down 21 cruise missiles launched by Russian jets from the Caspian Sea.
But one Russian missile hit a nine-story residential building in Uman, a town in central Ukraine famous for its vibrant Jewish culture, destroying a large section of it. On Friday morning, 10 people were found dead and 17 others were taken to hospital, Ihor Klymenko, Ukraine’s interior minister, said in a statement. Rescuers are still working at the scene.
In Dnipro, Russia’s forces destroyed a house, killing a 31-year-old woman and a 2-year-old toddler. Three others were wounded.
“Missile strikes killing innocent Ukrainians in their sleep, including a 2-year-old child, is Russia’s response to all peace initiatives,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said in a statement. “The way to peace is to kick Russia out of Ukraine. The way to peace is to arm Ukraine with F-16s and protect children from Russian terror.”

J-K: 19-year-old killed after massive boulder rolls down hill, hits his house

Kishtwar: A teenager was killed after a massive boulder rolled down a hill during a rain-triggered landslide and hit his house in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district early Thursday, officials said.

Two people were trapped under the debris of the house. While 19-year-old Arshad was killed in the incident, Rashid (17) was rescued, they said.

The officials said the other occupants of the house are safe. The incident took place between 3:30 am and 4 am in the district’s Thakuria area.

Loyedhar Sarpanch Mohd Rafi Shah said the village is located at the foot of the hill and there is always the threat of boulders rolling down during a landslide

There was a major incident some years ago and now again there has been one, he said and demanded that the government take some measures for the safety of people.

Seven Shops, Residential House Gutted in Massive Fire Mishap

SRINAGAR: At least seven shops and a residential house were gutted in a massive fire incident in Qalamabad village in Handwara area in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Reports said that a fire broke out in a residential house this afternoon. The raging flames soon after spread to a shopping complex in proximity near Jamia Masjid Qalamabad.

Responding to the exigency, Handwara Police and locals swung into action to douse off the flames. After hours of strenuous efforts, the blaze was controlled but not before it gutted at least seven shops and a double-storeyed residential house. Among the gutted shops included four of merchandise (Kiryana), two of hardware and one of a tailor. The residential house and the shopping complex are said to belong to one Ghulam Ahmad Najar.

The fire also caused minor damage to the attic portion of the Jamia Masjid Qalamabad.

Two civilians and a cop during the rescue operation suffered contusions and were administered with first aid at the site.

Chairman Jamia Masjid Qalamabad, Abdul Ghani Reshi while extending his gratitude to Handwara Police and local administration alongside Army’s 30 RR said that the timely action from them prevented the fire from spreading further. The mosque head however castigated the local unit of F&ES Department for failing to act on time, which according to him led to escalation of the blaze.

“We are highly thankful to Handwara Police, the local administration alongside Army’s 30 RR for their timely help and preventing the spread of fire”, he said adding “We however are highly agonized by the pathetic approach of the local F&ES Department unit which despite at a stone’s throw distance failed to perform its duty as otherwise expected.” (GNS)

Turkey’s tourism sector sees rebound after massive earthquakes

Ankara: Turkey’s tourism industry is recovering from a major setback caused by the February 6 devastating earthquakes, business insiders said.

The number of tourism bookings rose by nearly 40 per cent in mid-March compared with that of last year, after a one-and-a-half months slowdown following the earthquakes, said Hamit Kuk, a consultant of the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies.

The earthquakes struck at a time when the country’s tourism sector was restoring its losses from the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic had led to cancellations or postponement in tourism reservations both from overseas and local markets, Xinhua news agency quoted the consultant as saying.

However, the Turkish lira has strengthened the competitiveness of the country’s tourism sector.

Since 2022, the lira has lost about 70 per cent of its value against the US dollar.

Favourable exchange rates in the past year have further stimulated the demand for tourism services in Turkey, a tourist destination popular with Russians, Germans and Britons, among other foreign tourists, said Elcin Yildiz, an Ankara-based freelance tourist guide.

Ali Bahar, president of the Antalya Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said an upcoming nine-day vacation is also expected to boost the domestic demand for tourism services.

Many Turkish families are expected to combine the upcoming school break with the three-day Eid holiday, which begins on April 21, making it a nine-day vacation.

However, as Turkey’s tourism industry seeks to reach pre-pandemic levels of reservations, the impact of the earthquakes and the country’s economic woes on domestic demand should not be underestimated, according to Kuk.

The high inflation has led to a sharp decline in Turkish households’ purchasing power. In addition, the prices of the hotel rooms have increased by 15 to 40 percent due to the recent surge in operation costs, he explained.

Furthermore, there is no demand for tours in earthquake-hit eastern and southeastern Turkey, which are known for its cultural excursions, he said.

The tourism industry, which employs about two million people, plays an important part in Turkey’s economy.

In 2022, Turkey hosted 51.3 million foreign visitors, who contributed $46.3 billion in tourism revenues, up from $38.5 billion in 2019, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute.

Earlier, Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said that the country expects to host nearly 60 million foreign tourists in 2023, and 90 million in 2028.

Massive crowds join Rahul Gandhi on his road show in Karnataka’s Vijayapura

Vijayapura: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday held a massive road show here, ahead of the May 10 Karnataka Assembly polls, waving at a large, enthusiastic crowd that had lined up on both sides of the route.

Standing on top of a specially designed vehicle, Gandhi constantly waved at the people gathered in the streets and on nearby buildings, many of whom were seen chanting ‘Rahul, Rahul’ slogans and shouting loud cheers.

He began the road show after garlanding the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

People holding Congress flags moved along as the vehicle carrying Gandhi and other Congress leaders passed through the streets from Shivaji Circle and Kanakadasa Circle, amid the sound of drum beats.

Karnataka Congress campaign committee chief M B Patil and several other party leaders and workers accompanied Gandhi on the road show.

Gandhi, earlier today began his two-day visit to poll-bound Karnataka from Kudala Sangama, where he offered obeisance to 12th-century poet and social reformer Basaveshwara on his birth anniversary, celebrated as Basava Jayanti today.

Massive Crackdown Launched By JK Police

SRINAGAR: Police in Baramulla district of North Kashmir launched a crackdown on stunt bikers, with fines and motorcycle seizures carried out on Sunday.

According to official sources, the police acted on information that dozens of bikers were performing stunts on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway during Eid-ul-Fitr.

Police stopped dozens of bikers, checked their documents, and found most of them were without helmets.

“We have a zero-tolerance policy against two-wheeler drivers performing stunts, which can frighten drivers and pedestrians,” said a senior police officer. [KNT]
