Srinagar, Apr 21: A massive gathering of devotees was witnessed in Srinagar’s Hazratbal Dargah shrine and the historic Jamia Masjid on the last Friday of the holy month Ramadan.

Reports reaching the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that nearly 50,000 devotees offered congregational Friday prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid, which remained closed for the prayers last Friday.

The biggest congregation was, however, witnessed at Hazratbal shrines where the devotees from different parts of the Valley participated in the Friday prayers, where the holy relic of the Prophet (SAW) was displayed during which emotional scenes were witnessed all around.

Large congregations were also witnessed in others Masjids and shrines including Masjid Jamiat-e-Ahlehadith, Gawkadal; Asar-e-Sharif, Janab Sahib Soura Asar-e-Sharif Shehri Kalashpora Ziarat-e-Makhdoom Sahib, Khanqah-e-Mualla and different Imambaras.

The biggest congregational prayers were also witnessed at several other shrines in different districts, including Chararisharief in Budgam, Khiram Sirhama & Hazratbal Kabamarg in Anantnag district, Shrines of Hazrat Sultan-ul-Arifeen and Sheikh Hamzah Makhdoom Sahib (RA) located in Ahm-e-Sharief and Gundpora-Rampora, respectively, in Bandipora district and other Masjids as well.

During the special prayers, the religious clerics threw light on the teachings of Islam.

Special arrangements were put in place including sanitation, lightening, traffic management, transport and relevant things for the devotees, officials said.

“We had also established a control room at Dargah Hazratbal where thousands of devotees are expected to gather for Friday congregational prayers and to have a glimpse of the holy relic,” officials said.

The authorities had also pressed buses into service to ferry devotees to and from Hazratbal Dargah.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson of the Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid, said that on the occasion of Last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan, thousands of men, women and young people performed Friday prayer at the historical Jama Masjid Srinagar by prostrating themselves before the Almighty Allah, doing Tauba-Wa-Istighfaar – repenting over their sins and seeking forgiveness from their Lord.

However, the people were once again disappointed over the absence of their beloved leader Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq who is under house detention for the last nearly four years due to which the Mimbar and Mihraab of the grand mosque continue to remain silent, the statement said.

He conveyed the Eid-ul-Fitr message of the detained Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir to the people in a huge public gathering and appealed to them to celebrate Eid with simplicity according to Islamic teachings. They were urged to remember the poor, needy, backward and disadvantaged people of society in the festivities.

Anjuman expressed strong resentment against the continuous illegal and arbitrary detention of Mirwaiz –e-Kashmir and said the authorities should change their dictatorial attitude and release him before Eid

On the occasion, the people raised their voices for the immediate and unconditional release of Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir.

Meanwhile, the Anjuman said that the Eid prayers are going to be offered after three years at Jama Masjid Srinagar inshallah and according to the programme, the Eid prayer will be offered at 09:00 am, In Sha Allah.

The people were urged to come before time and show Islamic unity and discipline on the occasion—(KNO)

Peace returns to old city, thousands converge at Jamia Masjid, observe ‘Laylat-al-Qadr’ in Srinagar

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, April 21: Thousands of people from different parts of Kashmir converged at Jamia Masjid in Srinagar’s old city to observe ‘Laylat-al-Qadr or the Night of Power’ earlier this week.

It was for the first time in the past three years the authorities allowed night-long prayers at Srinagar’s grand mosque.

One of the holiest nights in Islam falls between the nights of 26-27 of Ramzan passed off peacefully. No untoward incident was reported and devotees offered prayers in peace.

Pertinently, until 1990 thousands of people converged at Srinagar’s grand mosque every Friday and on occasions like Shab-e-Mehraj, Shab-e-Baraat and Shab-e-Qadr to offer congregational prayers.

However, after the Pakistan-sponsored insurgency broke out in J&K in 1990, separatists and militancy hijacked this important religious centre to preach separatism and sedition.

People in large numbers coming to the grand mosque for congregation prayers provided separatists with a readymade audience to deliver anti-national sermons to appease their masters in the neighbouring country.

The three-decade-long Pakistan-sponsored militancy in J&K saw henchmen of separatists’ orchestrating protests and stone-pelting around Jamia Masjid.

Frequent disruptions led to a decline in the number of people visiting the grand mosque. Many shopkeepers closed down their establishments due to uncertainty and chaos.

It may be recalled that in 1990, Hizbul Mujahideen militants murdered Kashmir’s chief cleric, Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq at his residence at Nageen in Srinagar outskirts.

The cold-blooded murder of the late Mirwaiz was carried out at the behest of Pakistan.

The message was clear that Srinagar’s grand mosque would be controlled by the hardliners and anyone opposing the move will have to face the consequences.

In June 2017, when the son of the late Mirwaiz Moulana Mohammad Farooq, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was delivering a sermon on the revered night of ‘Laylat-al-Qadr’ an unruly mob lynched, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mohammad Ayub Pandit and stoned him to death outside the historic Jamia Masjid at Nowahata.

DySP Pandit was posted outside the mosque during ‘Shab-e-Qadr’ and was doing his duty standing at the access control of the mosque when he was attacked and killed.

The brutal murder of the police officer evoked widespread condemnation from every section of society.

J&K Police later arrested the accused persons who led the attack to lynch DySP Pandit.

In December 2018, a group of masked young men stormed into the Jamia Masjid with ISIS flags and created a ruckus.

The incident occurred after the Friday congregational prayers.

The group carrying ISIS flags barged into the mosque and rushed to the pulpit. One of them stood atop the pulpit with his shoes on, shouting slogans.

Till August 5, 2019 – when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and bifurcate it into two Union Territories – Srinagar’s grand mosque was considered to be the citadel of the separatists.

Chairman of his faction of the so-called Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who also heads the Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid (managing committee of the grand mosque), acted as a spectator and couldn’t do much to uphold the integrity of this historic religious institution.

Kashmir-based politicians, who ruled Jammu and Kashmir after 1990, made half-hearted attempts to stabilize the situation as they didn’t want to annoy Pakistan and their stooges in the Himalayan region.

After 2019 the security agencies tightened the noose around the anti-national elements. A massive crackdown was launched to nab the henchmen of Pakistan stooges in the old city.

These elements are used to lure the youngsters by offering them Rs 500 to pelt stones on the security personnel and disrupt normal life.

Efforts put in by Jammu and Kashmir Police and the paramilitary forces have yielded results.

The participation of thousands of people in “Shab-e-Qadr (Night of Power)’ recently is ample proof of the fact that peace has been established in the volatile old city of Srinagar.

Ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr this year markets around Jamia Masjid are abuzz with activities and people are thronging the area without any fear of getting caught in stone-pelting or facing any harassment at the hands of miscreants.

Peace has returned to Srinagar’s old city. The government has succeeded in restoring the pristine glory of the 610-year-old grand mosque, which can accommodate more than 33,000 people at one time.

The Jamia Masjid known for its peaceful and tranquil ambience is glittering again.

The message is loud and clear that no one in J&K would be allowed to use religious centres for promoting vested interests. People converge at religious places to seek solace and pray in peace, and they are least interested in politics. In the past three years, Srinagar has changed.

Its youth have given up the path of violence. No one is being arrested for indulging in stone pelting as no stone pelters are left. Militancy is on its last legs with the number of terrorists falling below the 70-mark.

The beginning of the end of the Pakistan-sponsored proxy war has commenced.

J&K residents are heaving a sigh of relief in the militant and tension-free atmosphere.

Peace returning to the old city is an indication that the era of bloodshed is over and a new dawn has broken out in Jammu and Kashmir.–(ANI)

After Three Year Hiatus, Taraweeh Prayers Return To Jamia Masjid On Shab E Qadr

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The holy month of Ramadan is one of the most significant periods for Muslims worldwide, and it is celebrated with great fervour in Jammu & Kashmir as well. The month of Ramadan is observed by Muslims as a time for self-reflection, spiritual growth, and increased devotion to Allah. The highlight of this month is the Shab-e-Qadr or the Night of Power, which is considered one of the holiest nights in Islam.

This year, Shab-e-Qadr was celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion throughout Jammu & Kashmir. After a gap of three years, the Isha and Taraweeh prayers were held in the historic Jama Masjid Srinagar, the spiritual hub of Kashmiri Muslims. A large number of people from across the valley gathered at the grand mosque to seek forgiveness from Allah on this Night of Power.

The Jama Masjid Srinagar is a significant religious landmark in Jammu & Kashmir and has been the center of Islamic teachings and spirituality for centuries. The mosque has played a vital role in shaping the religious and cultural identity of the people of the valley.

However, this year’s celebrations were marred by the absence of Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq, the head of Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid. Dr Farooq has been under detention for nearly four years, and as per the statement issued by Anjuman, he could not lead the collective prayer or deliver the sermon on the Night of Power.

The Anjuman expressed its disappointment at Dr Farooq’s continued detention and called for his unconditional release on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. The Anjuman also expressed hope that the authorities would consider the importance of Dr Farooq’s role in the religious and spiritual life of the people of Jammu & Kashmir.

  • Disallowing Prayers At Jamia Masjid Condemned

Disallowing Prayers At Jamia Masjid Condemned

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The managing body of the Jamia Masjid on Friday said that the authorities barred them from holding Friday prayers on the occasion of Jummat-ul-vida at Kashmir’s grand mosque.

“District magistrate and police officials visited jama Masjid in the morning at 9.30 am and asked the management to lock the gates of the Masjid as administration had decided that jummat-ul-vida prayers will not be allowed at the Masjid,” Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid said in a statement.

Denouncing the administration’s move, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah condemned disallowing of Jumat-Ul-Vida prayers at the historical Jamia Masjid in Nawhatta and said the measure is a clear violation and interference with the religious rights of the people.

“Jamia Masjid is the central mosque and an epicentre of faith of millions of Muslims across JK. Having this great mosque out of bounds for people on the auspicious day of Jumat-ul-Vida is highly deplorable. Such unwarranted curbs hurt the religious sentiments of millions and are unsuited to the country’s democratic, secular moorings besides debunking the claims of government on changed ground situation across Kashmir,” he said.

Calling the move of the administration a brazen violation religious freedom ,  Apni Party President Syed Mohammed Altaf Bukhari expressed deep regret over the closure of historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar on the auspicious occasion of Jumat-ul-Vida.

He said, “It is unfortunate and deeply regrettable that authorities yet again have barred Muslims from offering prayers in Jamia Masjid even on this most auspicious day of Jumat-ul-Vida. This is also a brazen violation of religious freedom, which is guaranteed by the Constitution.”

He urged the administration to revisit such decisions and ensure the practice of closing the mosque is not repeated on the upcoming occasions of Shab-e-Qadr and Eid-ul-Fitr.

Apni Party President said that the practice of repeatedly disallowing people from offering prayers in the grand mosque, which has been a spiritual centre for the Muslims of Kashmir for centuries, is hurting the religious sentiments of the masses and it causes great distress to lakhs of Muslims who traditionally come from various parts of Valley to join congregational prayers here.

Vice President and Media Head of Apni party, Syed Basharat Bukhari criticised the authorities for denying people the right to practice their religion freely and without any hindrance.

Basharat Bukhari said that it was Chairperson JK Waqf Board  Darakshan Andrabi, who made a statement that Eid prayers would be allowed at Eidgah.

“Surprisingly the Home Minister and LG have time and again stated that security is sound and foolproof in Kashmir, which raises the question of why security would suddenly become a problem on Eid day. If the security is indeed foolproof then it appears as though the administration does not want people to offer Eid prayers, which is unacceptable. HM and LG should accept and acknowledge that security in Kashmir is fragile”, he said.
