WhatsApp says will leave UK market if forced to stop end-to-end protection

    [ad_1]

London: Meta-owned WhatsApp has said it will leave the UK market if forced to weaken its end-to-end encryption for users under the upcoming Online Safety Bill.

In a briefing with reporters, WhatsApp Head Will Cathcart slammed the legislation as the most concerning set of online regulations in the western world, reports Wired.

“We’ve recently been blocked in Iran, for example. But we’ve never seen a liberal democracy do that,” Cathcart was quoted as saying in reports.

“Ninety-eight per cent of our users are outside the UK. It would be an odd choice for us to choose to lower the security of the product in a way that would affect those 98 per cent of users,” he categorically said.

Cathcart says he is concerned that the bill could make it harder for WhatsApp and other messaging platforms to provide end-to-end encryption.

“It’s hard to imagine we’re having this conversation about a liberal democracy that might go around people’s ability to communicate privately,” he told reporters.

A provision in the Online Safety Bill requires tech companies to use “accredited technology” to scan users’ messages for child sexual abuse material or CSAM.

According to security researchers, it is impossible to introduce such a measure without breaking end-to-end encryption.

In 2021, Apple introduced plans to scan users’ messages for CSAM but shelved those after facing criticism from the security researchers.

The Online Safety Bill also puts the onus on Big Tech and firms that fail to comply with the new rules could face fines of up to 18 million pounds, or 10 per cent of their annual global turnover, whichever is highest.

New measures in the law include tougher and quicker criminal sanctions for tech bosses and new criminal offences for falsifying and destroying data.

The Online Safety Bill will require social media platforms, search engines and other apps and websites allowing people to post their own content to protect children, tackle illegal activity and uphold their stated terms and conditions.

“The Bill will strengthen people’s rights to express themselves freely online and ensure social media companies are not removing legal free speech. For the first time, users will have the right to appeal if they feel their post has been taken down unfairly,” former Digital Secretary Nadine Dorries had said last year.

  • Electric cars under 30,000 euros: what the market offers

Electric cars under 30,000 euros: what the market offers

    [ad_1]

We certainly don’t find out today that the car world is changing. Higher prices with each passing day, the transition to electricity becoming more hasty and Ecobonus 2023 not distributed according to market trends in our country. Yes, because if it is true that the 2023 funds are exhausted for the 61-135 g/km category, i.e. full hybrids, mild hybrids, petrol, diesel, LPG and methane, it is equally true that there are still 171 million euros available for the 0-20 g/km range, i.e. that of electric cars. Very little used at the moment. This allows those who decide to buy an electric car to access the state eco-incentive by default. To recap, there is a 3,000 euro discount without any scrapping, 5,000 euro with the scrapping of a vehicle from Euro 0 to Euro 4, which must have been owned by one of the cohabiting family members for at least 12 months. It is therefore convenient to take advantage of these discounts to switch to electric. But what does the market offer at reasonable prices, let’s say under 30,000 euros? Not much, but there is something: Dacia Spring, DR 1.0 EV and Renault Twingo Electric are under 30,000 with all the trim levels. In the case of the Fiat 500, MG 4 and Smart fortwo, only the basic equipment or a few others. However, these are high prices, which not all Italians can afford with a calm heart, but it is the most basic that can be found on the market to enter the world of electric vehicles without resulting in minicars. Let’s discover these cars in detail and by calculating the prices with eco-incentives.

Bangladesh withdraws duty on sugar import to stabilise local market

    [ad_1]

Dhaka: Bangladesh’s National Board of Revenue (NBR) withdrew import duty on both raw and refined sugar in order to enable consumers to get the sweetener at reduced rates.

In a notification, NBR withdrew a 3,000 taka (about $28) specific duty on the import of raw sugar and 6,000 taka duty on refined sugar per tonne with immediate effect.

Apart from this, the NBR reduced the regulatory duty on the import of sugar to 25 per cent from 30 per cent.

The reduced import benefit, which reportedly comes following a proposal from the commerce ministry to bring down the prices of sugar from its current record level of up to 120 takas per kg, will remain effective until May 30 this year.

The overall import cost of raw and refined sugar is expected to decline by 6,500 takas and 9,000 takas per tonne respectively following the fresh duty waver and reduction measures, according to an estimate by the NBR. ($1 equals about 106 takas)

  • Saudi scientific team able to locate Habasha market from life of Prophet

Saudi scientific team able to locate Habasha market from life of Prophet

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: A specialized research team in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has located the historical Souq Habasha, one of the most important Arab markets in the pre-Islamic era and early Islam, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

Souq Habasha was an ancient seasonal Arab market and one of the largest in the Tihamah region west of the Arabian Peninsula.

The Souq was held every year for eight days starting on the first day of Rajab in the Islamic calendar, and was annually held until the Islamic year 197 (813 A.D.).

Every year, thousands of traders and merchants flocked to Souq Habasha in the pre-Islamic and early Islamic era. Located on the southern bank of Wadi Qanun in the Makkah Province, this bustling market was a center of commercial activity, attracting merchants from all over the world. But it disappeared from the map for hundreds of years.

Efforts to trace the location of the market have been ongoing for more than 40 years, with “surveys of field sites proposed by the Commission as recently as last year.”

After several studies, the Habasha market was discovered in cooperation between the King Abdulaziz Department, the Ministry of Culture and the Heritage Authority.

Historians believe that the Prophet Muhammed also visited this place and this market is mentioned in the Sirah of the Prophet Muhammad (prophetic biography), that he taken part in the market to work before receiving the message.

Darah Foundation said through its Twitter account, “After conducting in-depth research, field and archaeological studies, in cooperation between the King Abdulaziz House, the Ministry of Culture and the Heritage Authority, a specialized research team was able to locate the historical Habasha market (one of the most important Arab markets in pre-Islamic times and early Islam). This is the story That work.”

The market represents aspects of economic, literary and cultural activity, integrated with the historical Okaz market, which has been revived and has become a prominent cultural event in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which can be used in the scientific, cultural and tourism fields.

  • Share market crash almost led to the fall of Union govt: Mamata

Share market crash almost led to the fall of Union govt: Mamata

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday claimed that on the day of the Union Budget on Wednesday, the Union government virtually was on the verge of collapse because of the share market crash.

“The government was on the verge of collapse. Desperate calls were made to some parties to provide funds to that person whose share prices were going down fast,” the Chief Minister claimed at a public rally in East Burdwan district on Thursday.

However, she did not name anybody in this connection.

“I know exactly who all were approached for providing funds. But I do not want to take any names since that would make their lives miserable. At least six individuals were called up. Some were asked to pay around Rs 30,000 crore, some Rs 20,000 crore and some Rs 10,000 crore to that individual whose companies’ share prices fell. How will such a government, which does not have any planning, continue in the long run,” Banerjee asked.

The Chief Minister also termed the income tax relief proposed in the Union Budget 2023-24 as nothing but eye-wash.

“On one hand there were announcements for tax reliefs, and on the other hand the existing concessions on investments made were denied. This is like giving Rs 2 after deducting Rs 2.50,” Banerjee said.

Reacting to her comments, BJP’s national Vice-President and Lok Sabha MP Dilip Ghosh said that the popular Budget presented on Thursday has become a nightmare for the Chief Minister due to which she is making such ‘imaginary’ claims about the collapse of the Union government.

“But she will not be able to fool the people for a long time by making such claims. She is saying such things out of sheer anger and frustration,” Ghosh said.

Srinagar, Feb 01(GNS): Authorities on Wednesday sealed around two dozen shops at Aftab market in Srinagar.

“Eviction notices to the occupants were already served but they failed to vacate on their own after which we sealed the shop”, an official said.

Reports reaching GNS said that Revenue officials accompanied by police reached the market and sealed the shops.

Meanwhile, shopkeepers held a protest claiming that they have been paying rent to the Srinagar Municipal Corporation. They said that they had been earning their livelihood for decades. “These shops have been in existence for more than five decades. The action by the government is tantamount to snatching our livelihood,” a shopkeeper said and urged the government to revisit the decision.

“Only a few days back, we got eviction notices, saying this was a private property. If that is the case, then where was this private person from 1970 till now,” another shopkeeper said and urged authorities not to “snatch” their means of sustenance. (GNS)
