Campus harassment: Human chain, marches as students demand IPCW principal’s resignation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Students and activists hit the streets and staged demonstrations at the DU’s North Campus on Friday as anger surged over the alleged harassment of students at Indraprastha College for Women (IPCW) during a fest and “inaction” of authorities.

The students held marches at Arts Faculty and inside the IPCW campus.

Inside the college, scores of students formed a human chain showing “dissent over the shameless procedure with which the college administration has been acting and working for the past few days,” according to the Left-affiliated AISA, which is at the forefront of the protest.

The students have demanded the resignation of principal Poonam Kumria.

Some unidentified men trespassed into the college, shouted slogans and harassed women during the ‘Shruti’ festival on Tuesday.

At the Arts Faculty, several students accused the police of brutality as they were detained and filled in the police van. A police official, however, said those protesting were peacefully detained and removed from the area.

Over 200 students marched from Miranda House to Arts Faculty demanding justice to the students of IP College for Women. The students organised the “Azadi March” against repeated incidents of harassment at the campus.

“The Delhi Police showed its ugliest form by beating students and pathetically harassing women and detaining all protesters from AISA’s Azadi March at DU Arts Faculty,” the AISA, which organised the march, said in a statement.

Another student organisation, the Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS), also participated in the march.

The students held placards that read, “Lock up these lumpens, not our hostel’, ‘Then Miranda Now IP’, ‘Where are women safe-Fight for women’s safety’ and ‘Strict action must be taken against the hooligans, police and DU authorities’.

As soon as the march reached the Arts Faculty, the police beat up students and filled them up in two separate buses, AISA alleged.

“The Delhi Police, under the orders from ACP Civil Lines, Satender Yadav, unleashed a gruesome attack on the students. AISA demands immediate termination of ACP Satender Yadav, who could not provide a safe campus to IPCW students and now has harassed students himself,” the group said in the statement.

Earlier in the day, the AISA led another protest inside IPCW.

Hundreds of students gheraoed the principal’s office and demanded justice, the group said.

Holding placards, the students of the all-woman college raised slogans against Kumria.

“Around 200 students have gathered here against the incident. We are demanding action against the goons, resignation of the principal and establishment of GSCASH (gender sensitisation committee against sexual harassment),” a protesting student said.

Later in the day, AISA shared photos of women students holding hands in the IPCW campus.

“Several brave students of the IPCW have formed a human chain showing dissent over the shameless procedure with which the college administration has been acting and working for the past few days,” the AISA said.

“Amidst heavy surveillance and barricades surrounding the college campus entraping students inside, a human chain has been formed in protest of the committee formed by the college administration which includes the principal herself to look into the mishandling and misbehaviour of the female students by drunk miscreants,” the group added.

Following the incident on Tuesday, police registered an FIR under IPC sections 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 188 (disobedience to an order lawfully promulgated by a public servant) and arrested seven people.

An AISA activist alleged the men who trespassed the college campus were heard chanting “Miranda, IP dono hamara (Miranda House and Indraprastha College both are ours)” and “Miranda nahi chhoda to IP bhi nahi chhodenge (We didn’t leave Miranda, we won’t leave IP either)”.

The police, on their part, said there was an excess crowd near the college gate during the fest.

Around 3 pm, some overzealous students started to enter the college in a hurry. In the process, there was heavy pressure on the gates and some students fell down, they said.

Kerala: UDF, Congress organise marches across Wayanad constituency

    [ad_1]

Wayanad: Members of the United Democratic Front (UDF) on Sunday took out a torch march in Thiruvambady in Kerala’s Wayanad constituency against the Central government in the wake of the disqualification of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha who was representing the seat in Parliament.

Several protest marches are being organised by Congress and UDF across the constituency against Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification.

In Kozhikode, Muslim Youth League also conducted a light march.

The procession inaugurated by IUML state president Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal was carried out with the slogan ‘democracy in danger, support Rahul’.

MYL is the youth wing of the major political party in Kerala, IUML.

The Congress on Sunday began a day-long nationwide “Sankalp Satyagraha” in support of Rahul Gandhi following his disqualification from the Lok Sabha.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, senior leaders KC Venugopal, P Chidambaram and Salman Khurshid were among the party’s top brass taking part in the satyagraha at Rajghat.

Congress organised various protests in several states including Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.

In Karnataka also, Youth Congress Workers hold a ‘Mashal March’ in Bengaluru against the Central government in the wake of the disqualification of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha.

However, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from Delhi Raj Ghat trained her guns on the ruling BJP and vowed to keep fighting for the people at the party’s Sankalap Satyagraha to protest against the move to disqualify her brother and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

“Who thinks that they can silence us by scaring and humiliating us? Listen, we will not stop, I will see to it that the hard-earned money of the public is not being looted and given to few people,” Priyanka Gandhi said in a hard-hitting attack on the ruling party at the Centre.

“It was my family (Nehru-Gandhi) who nurtured the democracy of this country with their blood,” she said.

Rahul Gandhi, on Friday, was disqualified as a member of the Lok Sabha, a day after a Surat court sentenced him to two years imprisonment in a defamation case filed against him over his ‘Modi surname’ remark.

The decision came pertaining to his remark made in April 2019, where he had said “how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname” at a Lok Sabha election rally at Kolar in Karnataka. The court approved Gandhi’s bail on a surety and stayed the sentence for 30 days to allow him to approach the higher courts.

“My brother went to PM Modi and hugged him in the Parliament and said he has no hatred for you. We might have different ideologies but we do not have the ideology of hatred,” the Congress General Secretary said at Raj Ghat.

“You (BJP) talk about ‘Pariwarvaad’, I want to ask who was Lord Ram. Was he ‘Pariwarvaadi’, or were the Pandavas ‘Pariwarvaadi’ just because they fought for the culture of their family? Should we be ashamed because our family members fought for the people of the country?” she said.

Flag marches in Punjab; suspension of mobile Internet till Monday

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: To prevent any untoward incident in case of the arrest of absconding Sikh radical preacher Amritpal Singh, head of ‘Waris Punjab De’, who has been declared a ‘fugitive’, the police along with CRPF personnel on Sunday conducted flag marches across Punjab.

Punjab Police are planning to book Amritpal Singh under the provisions of the National Security Act (NSA), sources privy to the development told IANS.

In the interest of public safety, the government extended the suspension of SMS and mobile Internet services, except the voice call, till Monday noon.

Amritsar Deputy Commissioner of Police Parminder Singh Bhandal told the media that the police have set up 100 checkpoints in Amritsar and city outskirts to physically check vehicles. CRPF jawans were accompanying the policemen at checkpoints.

Officials told IANS the flag marches are being conducted in towns and cities in all districts.

Anticipating a disturbance of peace, a large contingent of the paramilitary force was deployed outside Amritpal Singh’s native village, Jallupur Khaira, in the Amritsar district.

A special team of the police, comprising personnel from seven districts, had followed the separatist leader’s convoy while he was on his way to Jalandhar’s Shahkot tehsil on Saturday. They zeroed in on his vehicle two to three times but Amritpal Singh managed to escape.

Section 144 has been imposed in many districts of the state. The police have also increased security in the state. In addition, all vehicles are being checked at the Punjab-Haryana border.

Amritpal’s father, Tarsem Singh told the media the police should have arrested him before he left the house. “We don’t have any information about his whereabouts. They carried out a search at our residence for 3-4 hours but did not find anything illegal.”

He called the police action “unjustified” and said his son was weaning the youth off drugs. “Why were the police not acting against criminals and those involved in drugs,” he asked.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Kuldeep Singh Chahal said Amritpal’s six gunmen were nabbed. “A manhunt for Amritpal Singh is on and we are hopeful that he will be arrested soon. A total of 78 people have been arrested so far and further searches and raids are underway,” he added.

“During the statewide operation, nine weapons, including one .315 bore rifle, seven rifles of 12 bore, one revolver and 373 live cartridges of different caliber have been recovered so far,” the police said in a statement on Twitter.

Video: BJP unveils ‘Modi marches on’ animated video in run-up to 2024 polls

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The BJP has released a short animated video showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi marching ahead in his mission to serve various sections of society and firmly on course to make India a five-trillion dollar economy, brushing aside abuses and allegations showered on him by the Opposition.

The four-minute-thirty-second video animation, titled “Mujhe Chalte Jaana Hai” (I have to keep walking), shows Modi’s journey from becoming the chief minister of Gujarat to the prime minister amid barbs by Congress leaders such as Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mani Shankar Aiyar and Digvijaya Singh.

The video makes no mention of the 2024 parliamentary elections and shows Modi climbing a flight of stairs past the 2014 and the 2019 Lok Sabha elections towards a five-trillion-dollar economy with a trademark jhola on the shoulder, walking past opposition leaders levelling allegations against him and unveiling government schemes for the poor after becoming prime minister.

Opposition leaders are shown shouting “maut ka saudagar”, “chaiwallah”, “chowkidar chor hai” and “Gautam Das” which seem to have no impact on Modi’s journey.

The prime minister is shown doing a tightrope walk over a deep valley carrying a huge syringe of indigenously developed vaccine during the COVID-19 pandemic.

US President Joe Biden, his predecessor Barack Obama, and former British premier Boris Johnson also make cameo appearances in the short video, which was shared by several Union ministers.

Obama is first seen alongside Sonia Gandhi as the US denied a visa to Modi when he was the chief minister of Gujarat. Obama is shown running up the stairs with a US visa in hand after Modi became prime minister in 2014, leaving Gandhi grimacing.

After the 2019 Lok Sabha win, Biden and Johnson are seen cheering Modi seated on the prime minister’s chair.

Modi is shown walking past a distraught Rahul Gandhi, with the Rafale allegation landing at his feet after the prime minister launched a helicopter manufacturing unit at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and a BBC newsreader reaching out to him in connection with the documentary.

The video ends with Modi marching towards the target of a five-trillion-dollar economy ignoring abuses showered on him.

Congress MLAs in Haryana marches to Assembly over old pension scheme

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: Congress MLAs in Haryana on Tuesday marched to the Vidhan Sabha under the leadership of former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda to support the demand of government employees for restoration of old pension scheme (OPS).

The MLAs also raised issues concerning the public and highlighted the ‘failures’ of the BJP-JJP government in the state.

The party’s state unit chief Chaudhary Udaibhan specially joined the march.

“Unemployment, corruption, crime, inflation and atrocities are at their peak in the state. The government uses lathi-charge on the people raising their demands in a democratic way,” Hooda said.

“This government lathi-charged first the farmers, then the youth, then the employees and then elected representatives of the panchayats. The Congress is committed to raise its voice against such undemocratic actions of the state government, both on the streets and in the House,” he added.

Hooda said today Haryana is facing maximum unemployment in the country.

“About two lakh posts are lying vacant in government departments. Amid all scams and paper leaks, even in the isolated recruitments, people from other states are being selected instead of those from Haryana,” he said.

Citing the example of the latest recruitment of technical lecturers, Hooda said out of 157 general category candidates, about 100 from other states were selected.

“While all state governments give priority to the natives in recruitments, the BJP-JJP government in Haryana is sometimes giving preference to people from other states. In such a situation, where would the youth of Haryana go,” Hooda asked.

  • IIT-B student’s death: Mumbai Police quiz kin; candle marches in Guj on Feb 19

IIT-B student’s death: Mumbai Police quiz kin; candle marches in Guj on Feb 19

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: A three-member team of Mumbai Police on Thursday met the family members of Darshan Solanki, a student of IIT-Bombay who ended his life on the Powai campus on February 12 – and recorded their statements, a family member said.

The police called on Solanki’s family members at their home in Maninagar on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on Thursday morning and posed various questions pertaining to 18-year-old Solanki’s sudden death.

Simultaneously, several student bodies in Gujarat will hold a peace procession which will culminate with a candle-lit march to pay homage to Solanki, the relative told IANS, but declined to be quoted.

The procession and candle march will be held in Ahmedabad and several other cities of Gujarat between 6.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. on Sunday, he added.

A day before, the distraught family had expressed suspicions of foul play behind the extreme measure taken by Solanki – who hailed from a Dalit family – shocking the educational circles all over the country.

The police had earlier recorded the family’s initial statements and are now questioning other students and hostelites on various aspects, including allegations of caste discrimination, which the IIT-B management has officially denied.

A student body on the campus, Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle-IITB, had issued a detailed statement last Monday pointing at alleged caste discrimination, which the IIT-B has rejected outright.

Meanwhile, Dalit leader and Congress MLA from Vadgam, Jignesh Mevani, on Thursday demanded an investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the death of Solanki.

Mevani told the media in Ahmedabad that the tragic incident involved a Dalit student who got into IIT Bombay after clearing the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) with flying colours.

The Maharashtra government should set up an SIT to probe the incident because the family suspects foul play, Mevani said. The Dalit leader also demanded that the government should pay Rs 50 lakh compensation to the deceased student’s family.

Solanki’s father, Ramesh Solanki, has alleged that his son was harassed by the other students because “we are Dalits”.

“When he visited us during Makar Sankranti, he had complained to his aunt that the other students were harassing him, taunting him that ‘because you are a Dalit, you got an opportunity to study free of cost’,” Ramesh Solanki said.

In a related development, the students of Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalay in Wardha have sent a memorandum to President Draupadi Murmu urging the Centre to enact a ‘Rohith Vemula Act’ to safeguard students from marginalised communities in nationally important institutions of higher learning and end the suicides that are being reported from there, citing the two cases – one each at IIT-B and IIT-Madras this week – and an attempted suicide case in IIT-Madras.

Allow RSS marches across state: Madras HC tells TN Police

    [ad_1]

Chennai: The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu Police to allow the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to hold route marches on public roads in the state.

Quashing an earlier order dated November 4, 2022, passed by a single judge restricting the RSS events to their compound limits, the bench comprising Justice R. Mahadevan and Justice Mohammed Shaffiq on Friday noted that a democratic state has the responsibility to uphold the right to freedom of speech and expression of its citizens.

The bench directed the RSS to propose three dates for the march route and apply for necessary police permits.

While ordering the police to process the RSS application according to the laws, the bench also instructed the RSS to organise the march in a peaceful manner.
