Haiti, clean energy, supply chains, climate change and “modernizing the North American Aerospace Defense Command” will be priority topics of discussion between the two leaders, according to a White House release. Trudeau’s office issued its own statement, adding that critical minerals will be a top agenda item, which wasn’t specifically highlighted in the White House release.

The spectre of Beijing’s alleged interference in Canada’s elections will also loom over the talks. It will also be the leaders’ first in-person meeting since high-altitude objects, and one confirmed balloon from China, were shot down over North America.

The dramatic takedowns alarmed politicians and military on both sides of the border, stoking discussions on continental defense, setting it up as a discussion point for bilateral talks.

Biden last visited Ottawa as vice president in December 2016 in the twilight of the Obama administration.

During an A-list dinner thrown in his honor, Biden touted North America as a region “better positioned than any time since the end of World War II” to lead the hemisphere and world in promoting liberal values.

“Viva la Canada because we need you very, very badly,” he said in a toast.

Beyond friendly photo-ops, the two G-7 leaders are expected to clarify joint action on the development of critical minerals.

Pressure will be on the leaders to announce progress on the Joint Action Plan on Critical Minerals that was finalized in 2020 during the final days of the Trump administration.

  • Turkish women defy ban on protests, stage ‘Feminist Night March’

Turkish women defy ban on protests, stage ‘Feminist Night March’

    [ad_1]

Istanbul: Turkish women have defied a ban on protests and staged an annual march called “Feminist Night March” in Istanbul’s Taksim Square to mark International Women’s Day.

Although the police allowed the protesters on Wednesday night to carry on with their march for a while, later they used tear gas to disperse them, reports the BBC.

    Several people were also detained.

The women had gathered in the city’s Istiklal Street despite the ban imposed by the Beyoglu district governor’s office for all kinds of demonstrations and marches in the area, including the women’s day march.

Marking International Women’s Day, the main opposition Republican People’s Party earlier in the day released a report which said that more than 600 women had been killed in Turkey by men since 2021, when President Recep Tayyip Erdogan withdrew the country from the Istanbul Convention — a treaty that aimed to combat domestic violence.

In a statement titled “we are sorry, we are angry”, the march organiser criticised the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) for failing to handle a range of crises and problems including ongoing economic deterioration, the coronavirus pandemic, the February 6 earthquakes that claimed more than 46,000 lives, and increasing racism and promoting LGBT+ hatred and patriarchy, reports the Turkish Minute news website.

It said that women are determined to continue their fight against patriarchy, homophobia, transphobia, exploitation of labour and capitalism.

The women at the march also chanted slogans calling on the government to resign.

“We are not going to be silent, we will not be intimidated, and we are not obeying you,” they said.

Every year, thousands of women gather in Taksim Square for the “Feminist Night March”, which marks the continuation of the world-famous “Reclaim the Night” movement, despite bans from authorities and police violence and detention.

Kavitha to appear before ED on March 11, leaves Hyderabad for Delhi

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi MLC K Kavitha left for Delhi late Wednesday night after she was summoned by the central agency Directorate of Enforcement in connection to the excise policy money laundering case. She will appear before the ED on March 11.

In a statement released soon after the summon, Kavitha agreed to cooperate with ED fully and remarked that the Narendra Modi-led central government’s ‘tactics’ of intimidation would neither lower her nor her father and chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao nor BRS party’s fight against an anti-people regime.

“Let me remind the power mongers in Delhi that Telangana has never and will never bow before the oppressive anti-people regime. We will fearlessly and fiercely fight for the right of the people,” her statement said.

She further questioned ED’s short notice and denies any involvement in the scam.

“I fail to understand why I have been summoned at such short notice. It seems that certain political motives have been masquerading in the name of investigation. As stated, being a social worker and having prior commitments, I had already planned my schedule for the upcoming week, and the abrupt rejection of my request seems to be motivated by reasons best known to you, which demonstrates that it is nothing but “Political victimisation”, her statement read.
