  • Contempt petition: Cal HC asks SSC chief to be personally present on March 24

Contempt petition: Cal HC asks SSC chief to be personally present on March 24

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the chairman of the West Bengal School Service Commission to be personally present before it on March 24 in connection with contempt petitions moved by candidates alleging they were not awarded marks for out of syllabus questions in the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) of 2011 as ordered earlier.

The court held that an affidavit of compliance filed before it by the chairman of SSC is not acceptable.

Directing the SSC chairman to appear before the court personally on March 24, Justice Rajasekhar Mantha observed that it is apparent that marks for questions out of the syllabus have not been awarded to any of the petitioners.

The marks in question are for the TET qualification, which is the first stage of the state level selection test (SLST) of 2011, the court said.

After qualifying with the minimum number of marks stipulated by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), a candidate qualifies for the other stages, which are the personality test and interview.

Justice Mantha directed that the pendency of the contempt proceeding will not prevent the SSC from awarding the marks to the petitioners as was directed in an order of June 29, 2022.

He directed that a fresh compliance report be furnished by the chairman of the SSC on March 24, when the matter will be heard again.

The five contempt petitions, involving 83 candidates, were filed alleging that the order of June 29 was not given effect by the SSC.

  • Godhra train burning case: SC to hear pleas of Gujarat govt, convicts on March 24

Godhra train burning case: SC to hear pleas of Gujarat govt, convicts on March 24

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday said it will hear on March 24 the appeal of the Gujarat government and the bail pleas of several accused who are serving life imprisonment in the 2002 Godhra train burning case.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala, meanwhile, directed the counsel for the Gujarat government and the convicts to provide a soft copy of the consolidated chart containing details such as actual sentences awarded to them and the period spent in jail till now.

The bench adjourned the hearing after it was apprised that Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the state government, was then unavailable.

“We will have it on Friday,” the bench said.

On February 20, the state government had told the top court that it will be seeking award of death penalty to 11 convicts whose sentences in the 2002 Godhra train burning case were commuted to life imprisonment by the Gujarat High Court.

“We will be seriously pressing for award of death penalty to the convicts whose death penalties were commuted into life imprisonment (by the Gujarat High Court). This is the rarest of rare cases where 59 people, including women and children, were burnt alive,” the solicitor general had said.

“It is consistent everywhere that the bogey was locked from outside. Fifty-nine died, including ladies and children,” he had added.

Giving details, the law officer had said 11 convicts were sentenced to death by the trial court and 20 others granted life term in the case.

The high court upheld total 31 convictions in the case and commuted the death penalties of the 11 convicts to life term, Mehta had said.

On February 27, 2002, 59 people were killed when the S-6 coach of the train was burnt at Gujarat’s Godhra, triggering riots in the state.

The state government has come in appeal against the commutation of death penalty into life term for 11 convicts, Mehta said. Several accused, he added, have filed pleas against the high court upholding their convictions in the case.

The top court has granted bail to two convicts in the case so far. Seven other bail pleas are pending adjudication in the matter.

The bench noted that a large number of bail applications have been filed before it in the case and said, “It has been agreed that the AORs (advocates-on-record) on behalf of applicants along with advocate Swati Ghildiyal, standing counsel for Gujarat, shall prepare a comprehensive chart with all relevant details. List after three weeks.”

The Supreme Court had on January 30 sought the Gujarat government’s response on the bail pleas of some of the convicts sentenced to life imprisonment in the case.

The court issued notice to the state government on the bail pleas of Abdul Raheman Dhantia alias Kankatto and Abdul Sattar Ibrahim Gaddi Asla, among others.

The state government, on the other hand, said it was not “merely a stone pelting” case as the convicts had bolted a bogey of the Sabarmati Express, leading to the death of several passengers on the train.

“Some are saying their role was just stone pelting. But when you lock a bogey from outside, light it on fire and then pelt stones, it is not just stone pelting,” the solicitor general had said.

On December 15, last year, the top court granted bail to Faruk, who was serving a life sentence in the case and noted that he had been in jail for 17 years.

Faruk, along with several others, was convicted for pelting stones at a coach of the Sabarmati Express.

  • Maha govt bows before farmers, but wary leaders don’t call off ‘long march’

Maha govt bows before farmers, but wary leaders don’t call off ‘long march’

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: In what is viewed as a huge victory for the farmers, the Maharashtra government on Thursday evening conceded almost all demands of the agitating peasants, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said.

However, wary of past experiences, the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) has decided against calling off the agitation, but has halted the ongoing Nashik-Mumbai “long march” en route at Vasind in Thane.

“We had very fruitful negotiations on all issues and most have been resolved, I shall make a statement in the legislature tomorrow morning,” a beaming Shinde said, after emerging from a marathon meeting with over a dozen AIKS leaders.

Confirming the developments from the AIKS side, CPI-M MLA Vinod Nikole said that most pertaining to the jurisdiction of the state have been sorted out while those in the Centre’s ambit have yet to be resolved.

“Accordingly, we have decided to halt the ‘long march’ at Vasind. The agitation is not called off till the government issues the relevant orders right up to the district level to implement our demands within the next two days,” Nikole told media persons.

He pointed out how in the past two “long march’ agitations in 2018 and 2019, the then governments had made all assurances to the peasants and later nothing came out of it.

“This time, we want the government to issue the GR, orders to the Divisional Commissioners, District Collectors and others down the rank to implement the decisions agreed in today’s meeting. The ‘long march’ will disperse only after we see the execution at the local levels,” Nikole declared.

He added that the marchers and their families have been calling up to ascertain the implementation aspect after the demands are accepted and the farmers will not budge from their Vasind camp till then.

Nikole cautioned that if the orders are not issued in two days to all the officers concerned, then the march will resume to reach the Maharashtra Legislature as scheduled on Monday, which could create complications here.

Thursday’s meeting – the second in two days – comprised Shinde, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, Ministers and officials of the concerned departments, while the farmers side included AIKS President Ashok Dhawale, state General Secretary Dr. Ajit Nawale, Jiva Pandu Gavit, Nikole and others.

Among the major points in the 17-point charter of demands are: compensation or Rs 600/quintal to onion growers who have suffered owing to rock-bottom prices and MSP of Rs 2,000/quintal from the next season, besides fair remuneration for soybean, cotton, tur, milk, etc.

Delhi excise scam case: Kavitha summoned again on March 20 by ED

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Kavitha, the daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, who skipped the questioning of Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with Delhi excise policy scam, has been summoned again on March 20 by the probe agency.

On Thursday, her second round of questioning had to be done which she skipped.

Now, the ED has sent her another summon to join the investigation on March 20.

During her first appearance, she was reportedly confronted with Hyderabad-based businessman Arun Pillai, who had represented the South Group that allegedly gave kickbacks of Rs 100 crore to AAP leaders. The money was allegedly used during the Goa Assembly polls.

Pillai has reportedly said that he was Kavitha’s associate.

On Wednesday, the ED recorded the statement of Buchchi Babu, the BRS MLC’s former auditor and also a member of the South Group.

Kavitha has maintained that she has never met former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who has been arrested by the CBI and the ED in connection with the case, claiming that her name was being unnecessarily dragged in the case.

According to the ED, Kavitha is also one of the representatives of South Group in the excise policy case.

  • Delhi BJP to protest at Jantar Mantar on March 21, lay siege to Assembly on March 23

Delhi BJP to protest at Jantar Mantar on March 21, lay siege to Assembly on March 23

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The BJP has decided to intensify its agitation to put pressure on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, whom it alleged was the mastermind of the liquor scam, to resign.

The BJP believes that Kejriwal should resign on the basis of morality, and if he does not do so, the BJP will force him to resign.

Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, and Delhi BJP General Secretary Kuljeet Chahal disclosed the party’s strategy at a press conference here.

They said that the ED has been told by Delhi government officials that Kejriwal had directed them to implement the liquor policy, following which the latter has no right to continue as the Chief Minister.

For the last 15 days, the BJP is protesting in Delhi demanding the Chief Minister’s resignation.

Now after new revelations have come to the fore, BJP has decided to intensify the protest from March 16.

From March 16, the BJP will go door-to-door and distribute leaflets, in which full details of the irregularities, corruption and loot of Delhi’s government treasury used to implement the excise policy will be given to the people.

In support of this demand, the BJP will protest in the state Assembly during the upcoming session and all the ministers of Delhi will be ‘gheraoed’.

Bidhuri said that the arrest of former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia is not enough to expose the excise policy scam, but Kejriwal is the real mastermind of the scam.

BJP leaders said that Kejriwal calls for honesty in politics but he has done maximum corruption in politics. Therefore, his resignation is the only solution and BJP will continue the protest till Kejriwal does not resign.
