  • Chhattisgarh: 4 held over foot march in support of Amritpal Singh in Raipur

Chhattisgarh: 4 held over foot march in support of Amritpal Singh in Raipur

    [ad_1]

Raipur: Four persons were arrested on Thursday, a day after a rally was taken out in Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur by a group of people allegedly in support of wanted pro-Khalistan preacher Amritpal Singh, an official said.

Based on the examination of CCTV footage and video clips of the statements given by people involved in the rally, a first information report (FIR) was registered at Civil Lines police station here, Raipur Senior Superintendent of Police Prasant Agrawal told PTI.

Four Raipur residents, identified as Diler Singh Randhawa (46), Manindarjeet Singh alias Mintu Sandhu (40), Harinder Singh Khalsa (44) and Harpreet Singh Randhawa alias Chintu (42), were arrested for allegedly taking out a foot march in support of Amritpal Singh, he said.

The four have been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 505(1)(b) (with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquillity), SSP Agrawal said, adding that further investigation is underway.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said in the state Assembly that he had ordered police to probe the issue and take action against those found indulging in anti-national activities.

On Wednesday, a rally was taken out allegedly in support of Amritpal Singh, after which police served notice to the organisers. They were asked to furnish their replies at Civil Lines police station.

Diler Singh Randhawa, a member of Baba Budha Saheb Committee, who was part of the rally, had told media persons that Amritpal Singh was innocent. He accused the Punjab government of falsely implicating him.

Diler Singh claimed Amritpal Singh was fighting against addiction and was uniting youth through religion.

However, a video of Diler Singh, which was shared by police on Thursday, showed him claiming he had been misreported and that some persons were spreading propaganda that the rally was taken out in support of Khalistan.

He said the rally was held against the “illegal” action being taken against Sikhs in Punjab.

“We live in Chhattisgarh and love the people of Chhattisgarh. We respect every religion. We don’t want Khalistan and have nothing to do with it. We only talk about Sikhism and we raise our voice for Sikhs. It is our responsibility and right to raise the issue of our community,” he added.

Police action began in Punjab last week against radical preacher Amritpal Singh, who heads Waaris Punjab De’ organisation, leading to several arrests, though he continues to remain elusive.

Next round of G20 meetings in Gujarat from March 27

Gandhinagar: Gujarat will host the next round of G20 meetings from March 27 to April 4, during which three conclaves will be held in the state on a range of issues, where delegates from different countries will converge for participation, an official said.

Of these three upcoming events in the state, the first meeting on “Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG)” will take place between March 27 and 29 in Gandhinagar, a senior IAS officer, who is coordinating G20 events in Gujarat, said on Tuesday.

  • Ramadan 2023 begins on March 23; crescent moon not sighted in Saudi Arabia

Ramadan 2023 begins on March 23; crescent moon not sighted in Saudi Arabia

    [ad_1]

Riyadh, Mar 21: The crescent moon, which marks the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, has not been sighted on Tuesday evening in Saudi Arabia, according to local media reports. Therefore, Wednesday, March 22, would be the last day of the month of Sha’ban, and the holy month would begin from Thursday, March 23.

The Islamic calendar is usually either 29 or 30 days and the beginning and end of the month depend on the crescent moon, which is why Ramadan is not set on any specific days annually.

The Kingdom’s moon sighting committee will meet again on Wednesday evening to confirm the sighting of the moon.

Earlier, Saudi Arabia had called on Muslims to sight the crescent of the holy month of Ramadan. The Supreme Court called on whoever sights the crescent – either by the naked eye or through binoculars – to report to the nearest court and register their observation.

Ramadan is the month in which the Holy Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the faithful observe the ninth month of the Islamic calendar with prayers and fasting.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise (Fajr) to sunset (Maghreb). Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, and it’s an obligatory practice for all Muslims who can carry out the fast. In addition to abstaining from food and drink during fasting, Ramadan is also a month of disciplining oneself, reflecting and creating positive spiritual habits.

    Islamic calendar

The month of Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The 12 months are: Muharram, Safar, Rabi’ al-Awwal, Rabi’ al Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Juamda al-Thani, Rajab, Sha’aban, Ramadan (the month of fasting), Shawwal, Dhu al-Qadah and Dhu al-Hijjah (the month in which Muslims go for Haj – pilgrimage).

Even though the Islamic calendar has 12 months, being a lunar calendar, it is shorter than the Gregorian calendar – nearly ten days shorter, in fact. This is why Ramadan falls at a different time every year according to the Gregorian calendar.–(Khaleej Times)

  • Telangana: March ‘wettest’ in 10 years owing to rainstorm

Telangana: March ‘wettest’ in 10 years owing to rainstorm

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Unseasoned heavy rains, coupled with hailstorms across the state for the past few days mark this year’s March as the wettest in ten years.

After Hyderabad experienced the second hottest February in a decade, March brought in a winter and rainy combination of weather.

Kapra, in the neighbourhood of the city, recorded the highest rainfall of 6.28 cm, while most areas in north Hyderabad witnessed heavy rains coupled with hailstones in several places including Gajularamaram and Kukatapally recording 5.6 cm and 5.05 cm of rainfall respectively.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD-Hyderabad) officials, the phenomenon is abnormal for the month of March when the temperature should have gradually increased as winter subsides completely.

“It was not a normal thunderstorm and hailstorm event that covered almost the entire Telangana. This was because of the presence of two troughs or depressions – east to west and north to south – occurring simultaneously,” the IMD-Hyderabad chief told TOI.

According to statistics collated by Telangana State Development and Planning Society, Telangana received 4.35 cm of rainfall in March 10 years ago.

A decade later, the monthly cumulative until March 19 in the state stands at 3.81 cm while the highest March rainfall of 10.74 cm was recorded in 2008.

Surprisingly, the month of March has witnessed average rainfall exceeding 3 cm only six times in 25 years since 1988.

Another water held that such events are witnessed owing to western disturbances or the winds from the west of India.

However, this year the western disturbances came as a jet stream towards Telangana which instead of being 10 km to 15 km above sea level were extremely low, bringing in massive rainfall and hailstorms.

The experts further claimed that strong unseasonal rain in March might suggest the El Nino effect, which is known to make monsoons weaker and non-monsoon unseasonal showers stronger.

“However, the arrival of the monsoons cannot be predicated until May,” said experts.

    Red alert for rains issued

Many areas in Hyderabad were also issued a red alert on March 18 while the unseasons rain videos trended on social media.

Rains cause heavy losses to crop cultivation sector

Crops cultivated on more than 20,000 acres of land were damaged following unseasonal rains.

Maize, green gram, papaya and mango and other crops, most of which were in flowering and ripening stages were destroyed by the hailstorm that lashed Telangana on Thursday and Friday.

Horticultural crops like mango, rose, onion, and papaya and agricultural crop like maize were damaged by the hailstorm.

According to Agriculture department officials, over 18,826 acres of maize, farmed by around 1,930 farmers, was damaged in the erstwhile Khammam district alone.

Mangoes prices likely to hike over unseasonal rain

Unseasonal rains and pest attacks have affected many mango crops in different districts of the state, resulting in a double blow to their yield.

unseasonal rains and pest attacks have affected many mango crops in different districts of the state, resulting in a double blow to their yield.

Out of the total production of mangoes in the neighbouring districts of Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana, a significant portion is exported to foreign countries like Gulf countries, China, Australia, and others which is also going to be affected subsequently.
