Ramban, Mar 06: The commuters are all set to have a safe journey along Srinagar-Jammu highway by the end of March month as the authorities here have said that the two important tunnels and a bridge in Ramban district of Jammu region will be made functional this month.

Jammu-Srinagar national highway is the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country.

Official sources told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that work on several projects in Ramban district is in progress.

“800-metre-long T5 tunnel on Panthyal stretch of the highway is set to be thrown open by March 15 while Jaiswal bridge on Udhampur-Ramban section to be made operational by March 20 and Kunfer tunnel is also expected to be completed by March 31, besides double lane of Ramban flyover and Banihal bypass to be completed by April 15 this year,” they said.

Two tunnels, having a total length of 1,680 meters, would put an end to the ‘phantom of shooting stones’ and traffic disruptions along the stretch, officials said.

The twin tunnels will not only reduce the travel time of commuters, but will also completely bypass the difficult landslides and shooting stone prone areas along the stretch, officials said.

Speaking to KNO, Deputy Commissioner, Ramban, Mussarat Islam said all the projects on Jammu Srinagar national highway will be completed by stipulated time frame. “Work on the 800-meter T-5 Tunnel to bypass Panthyal stretch, which is vulnerable to shooting stones on highway, has been accelerated so that it becomes operational by March 15, 2023”, he said.

Mussarat said work is also in progress for double laning of Ramban flyover and Banihal bypass which will be completed by April 15 this year. After the competition of these projects, people travelling on Jammu-Srinagar highway would be able have a safe journey, he added—(KNO)

Delhi court sends Sisodia to judicial custody till March 20

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday sent Aam Aadmi Party leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia to judicial custody till March 20 in the alleged liquor policy case being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Special Judge M.K. Nagpal of Rouse Avenue Courts was hearing the case, who had, on March 4, also extended Sisodia’s CBI custody for two days and listed his bail plea for March 10.

The counsel appearing for the central agency said that at this stage, they are not seeking further CBI remand but in the next 15 days they might seek it.

    More details are awaited.

In the last two days, the CBI questioned him with key witnesses — former excise commissioner Arva Gopi Krishna and former excise department secretary C Arvind — in this case, who recorded their statements in front of a magistrate.

The AAP leader, while addressing the court, had earlier said that the CBI was asking the same questions again and again and it is mental harassment.

“They are not using third degree. But sitting for eight to nine hours and answering the same questions again and again, that too is mental harassment,” he told the court.

The court had also directed the CBI to conduct his medical exams at regular intervals.

The agency arrested Sisodia on February 26 after eight hours of questioning.

  • ISRO preps for re-entry experiment of decommissioned satellite on March 7

ISRO preps for re-entry experiment of decommissioned satellite on March 7

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is preparing for a challenging experiment of controlled re-entry of a decommissioned low earth orbit satellite, Megha-Tropiques-1 (MT1), into the earth’s atmosphere on March 7.

MT1 was launched on October 12, 2011, as a joint satellite venture of ISRO and French space agency CNES for tropical weather and climate studies.

Although the mission life of the satellite was originally three years, the satellite continued to provide valuable data services for more than a decade supporting regional and global climate models till 2021, the Bengaluru-headquartered space agency noted in a statement on Sunday.

UN/IADC (Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee) space debris mitigation guidelines recommend deorbiting a LEO (Low Earth Orbit) object at its end-of-life (EOL), preferably through controlled re-entry to a safe impact zone, or by bringing it to an orbit where the orbital lifetime is less than 25 years, according to ISRO.

It is also recommended to carry out “passivation” of onboard energy sources to minimise the risk of any post-mission accidental break-up.

The orbital lifetime of MT1, weighing about 1,000 kilograms, would have been more than 100 years in its 20 degree inclined operational orbit of 867 km altitude. About 125 kg on-board fuel remained unutilised at its end-of-mission that could pose risks for accidental break-up.

This leftover fuel was estimated to be sufficient to achieve a fully-controlled atmospheric re-entry to impact an uninhabited location in the Pacific Ocean.

Controlled re-entries involve deorbiting to very low altitudes to ensure impact occurs within a targeted safe zone.
Usually, large satellites/rocket bodies which are likely to survive aero-thermal fragmentation upon re-entry are made to undergo controlled re-entry to limit ground casualty risk. However, all such satellites are specifically designed to undergo controlled re-entry at EOL.

MT1 was not designed for EOL operations through controlled re-entry which made the entire exercise extremely challenging.
Furthermore, the on-board constraints of the aged satellite, where several systems had lost redundancy and showed degraded performance, and maintaining subsystems under harsher environmental conditions at much lower than originally designed orbital altitude added to the operational complexities.

Innovative workarounds were implemented by the operations team based on the study, deliberations, and exchanges among the mission, operations, flight dynamics, aerodynamics, propulsion, controls, navigation, thermal, and other subsystem design teams across the ISRO centres, which worked in synergy to surmount these challenges.

An uninhabited area in the Pacific Ocean between 5 degrees south to 14 degrees south latitude and 119 degrees west to 100 degrees west longitude was identified as the targeted re-entry zone for MT1.

Since August 2022, 18 orbit manoeuvres were performed to progressively lower the orbit. In between the de-orbiting, aero-braking studies at different solar panel orientations were also carried out to gain better insights into the physical process of atmospheric drag affecting the orbital decay of the satellite.

The final de-boost strategy has been designed after taking into consideration several constraints, including visibility of the re-entry trace over ground stations, ground impact within the targeted zone, and allowable operating conditions of subsystems, especially the maximum deliverable thrust and the maximum firing duration of the thrusters.

The final two de-boost burns followed by the ground impact are expected to take place between 16.30 hours to 19.30 hours on March 7.

Simulations show that no large fragments of the satellites are likely to survive the aerothermal heating during the re-entry.

“As a responsible space agency committed to safe and sustainable operations in outer space, ISRO proactively takes efforts for better compliance with the UN/IADC space debris mitigation guidelines on post-mission disposal of LEO objects,” the statement said.

The re-entry experiment of MT1 has been undertaken as a part of the ongoing efforts as this satellite with sufficient leftover fuel presented a unique opportunity to test the relevant methodologies and understand the associated operational nuances of post mission disposal by direct re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere, it was stated.

Tripura: CPI-M says 668 incidents of violence since March 2; blames BJP

    [ad_1]

Agartala: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) on Sunday claimed that since the announcement of the February 16 assembly election results on March 2 which indicated that the BJP secured a majority, over 668 incidents of violence have taken place in Tripura.

Blaming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — which bagged 32 of the 60 Assembly seats in the polls, thereby returning to power for its second term in the northeastern state, the CPI-M said at least three persons were killed while over 100 injured in the episodes of violence.

Many properties and houses were destroyed/ damaged during the violence, the CPI-M claimed.

CPI-M’s Tripura secretary Jitendra Chowdhury, accompanied by former minister Tapan Chakraborty and Left Front convener Narayan Kar on Sunday met Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha and apprised him about the prevailing “violent situation” in Tripura.

“In view of the series of attacks since March 2, thousands of people, including women and children, fled from their homes. They took shelter in the jungle and outside the state,” Chowdhury, a CPI-M central committee member, told the media.

He said that the “BJP goons and party workers attacked people, burning down their houses and properties”.

“Police remained a silent spectator and refused to register FIRs. The Chief Secretary, quoting the Director General of Police, said that 238 people were arrested in connection with the violent incidents. Actually these 238 people were detained for a while and after some time were let off,” the Left leader said.

He said that in the February 16 assembly polls, over 61 per cent of people did not cast their votes in favour of the BJP, adding that the saffron party’s 11 per cent vote share declined compared to the 2018 assembly polls’ outcome.

The CPI-M leader said that a large number of vehicles, shops, business establishments, houses, rubber gardens, fish ponds and other properties belonging to opposition party supporters have been burnt down or destroyed during the past four days.

Meanwhile, caretaker Chief Minister Manik Saha accompanied by the police chief Amitabh Ranjan visited Sepahijala and Khowai districts.

The police officers and the administration have been instructed to take strict action against the law breakers.

Telangana: Congress party slams BRS in Nirmal during foot march

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge Manikrao Thakre participated in the ‘Haath Se Haath Jodo’ poru yatra from Sirgapur to Nirmal on Saturday.

Speaking at the street corner meeting at Shivaji Chowk in Nirmal, Manikrao Thakre claimed that there has been a tremendous response to the ‘Haath Se Haath Jodo’ yatra across Telangana, adding the Congress party is all set to return to power.

He accused chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao of cheating people with false promises and fake claims.

“Congress cadre has been exposing the failures of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government in Telangana and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre by conducting the door-to-door campaign,” he said.

Addressing the meeting, senior Congress MP N Uttam Kumar Reddy criticized the BRS government for the rising rate of unemployment.

Reddy said, “More than 40 lakh youth remain jobless to this date. The BRS government is boasting about filling up a few thousand vacancies, but it is not addressing the remaining jobless youth.”

He said, “Exams were conducted for recruitment of 20,177 posts for Group-1, Group-2, Group-3 as well as police jobs. A whopping 22.01 lakh candidates applied and an average of 756 candidates competed for each available vacancy in Group-1. Similarly, the average number of candidates per post for Group-2 and Group-3 is 704 and 390 respectively.”

“If the government recruited 17,516 people for police recruitment, what should the remaining 7.30 lakh candidates do? They need alternate jobs, but the BRS government is not even providing an unemployment allowance of Rs 3,016 per month,” he said.

AICC programme implementation committee chairman Alleti Maheshwar Reddy alleged that CM KCR ‘hijacked’ the original dream of Telangana.

“He came to power by exploiting the sentiments of Telangana people but did nothing to achieve the goals of Neelu (water), Nidhulu (funds) and Niyamakalu (jobs). KCR gave up Telangana’s share of the Godavari and Krishna rivers to Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh,” Reddy said.

Maheshwar alleged that KCR pushed Telangana into huge debts of over Rs 5 lakh crore almost equal to two full annual budgets. “Further, over 40 lakh youth are still jobless in the State. They include thousands of youth who actively participated in the statehood movement,” he said.

He said that the state government is unable to pay salaries to the employees on time and no funds are left to be spent on welfare schemes.

“However, the assets of KCR and his family keep increasing and their party BRS became one of the richest parties in the country,” he alleged.

“KCR became the Chief Minister by exploiting the Telangana sentiments twice and now he disowned the state by forming the BRS to accomplish his dream of national politics. KCR is an opportunist and tomorrow he might even suggest a merger of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh if it suits his political goals,” he alleged.

He dubbed minister Indrakarana Reddy ‘Qabza Reddy’ and alleged that Indrakarana was more focused on land grabbing than serving the people. He said that the minister took no interest in resolving problems being faced by students at IIIT Basar.

He said, “The minister did not meet adivasis when they were sent to jail. Indrakaran Reddy failed to bring any development in Bhainsa despite being in the cabinet for the last eight years.”

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Congress’ Karnataka unit has given a call for state-wide bandh on March 9 to oppose “loot” and “corruption” in the state, a party release said on Sunday.

State President D.K. Shivakumar termed as “disgusting” the corruption practiced by BJP in the state. “The 40 percent commission has destroyed the life of all sections of the society… Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai government is by the corrupt, for the corruption and to the corruption,” he claimed.

The achievements of the BJP government are taking 40 percent commission in every tender, 40 percent commission in all school funds, 30 percent commission in funds released to religious mutts, and bribe for every posting and transfer, Shivakumar alleged.

There were scandals in recruitment of sub-inspectors of police, associate professors, assistant engineers, junior engineers and a recent addition is the rampant corruption that came to light in the Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Ltd (KSDL), he said.

Shivakumar said that to avoid inconvenience to the public, the protest will be staged symbolically between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and education institutions, hospitals, transport and other services are kept out of bandh. “Our demand is that CM Bommai should be sacked or he should resign from his post,” he demanded.
