    AI has better ‘bedside manner’ than some doctors, study finds

    ChatGPT appears to have a better ‘bedside manner’ than some doctors – at least when their written advice is rated for quality and empathy, a study has shown.

    The findings highlight the potential for AI assistants to play a role in medicine, according to the authors of the work, who suggest such agents could help draft doctors’ communications with patients. “The opportunities for improving healthcare with AI are massive,” said Dr John Ayers, of the University of California San Diego.

    However, others noted that the findings do not mean ChatGPT is actually a better doctor and cautioned against delegating clinical responsibility given that the chatbot has a tendency to produce “facts” that are untrue.

    The study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, used data from Reddit’s AskDocs forum, in which members can post medical questions that are answered by verified healthcare professionals. The team randomly sampled 195 exchanges from AskDocs where a verified doctor responded to a public question. The original questions were then posed to the AI language model, ChatGPT, which was asked to respond. A panel of three licensed healthcare professionals, who did not know whether the response came from a human physician or ChatGPT, rated the answers for quality and empathy.

    Overall, the panel preferred ChatGPT’s responses to those given by a human 79% of the time. ChatGPT responses were also rated good or very good quality 79% of the time, compared with 22% of doctors’ responses, and 45% of the ChatGPT answers were rated empathic or very empathic compared with just 5% of doctors’ replies.

    Dr Christopher Longhurst, of UC San Diego Health, said: “These results suggest that tools like ChatGPT can efficiently draft high-quality, personalised medical advice for review by clinicians, and we are beginning that process at UCSD Health.”

    Prof James Davenport, of the University of Bath, who was not involved in the research, said: “The paper does not say that ChatGPT can replace doctors, but does, quite legitimately, call for further research into whether and how ChatGPT can assist physicians in response generation.”

    Some noted that, given ChatGPT was specifically optimised to be likable, it was not surprising that it wrote text that came across as empathic. It also tended to give longer, chattier answers than human doctors, which could have played a role in its higher ratings.

    Others cautioned against relying on language models for factual information due to their tendency to generate made-up “facts”.

    Prof Anthony Cohn, of the University of Leeds, said that using language models as a tool to draft responses was a “reasonable use case for early adoption”, but that even in a supporting role they should be used carefully. “Humans have been shown to overly trust machine responses, particularly when they are often right, and a human may not always be sufficiently vigilant to properly check a chatbot’s response,” he said. “This would need guarding against, perhaps using random synthetic wrong responses to test vigilance.”

    New Delhi: More than half of the buildings in Delhi have been built in an unplanned manner exposing the city to the threat of disasters like earthquake, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena said Tuesday.

    Speaking at the launch of the Aapda Mitra training programme by the IP University, he said the role these volunteers will play during a potential disaster is very important as they would be the first responders.

    Their role is not confined to only disasters but they are expected to respond to incidents like road accidents, snatching, eve-teasing etc, the LG said.

    “Fifty-sixty per cent of the buildings of Delhi have been constructed in an unplanned manner due to flux of urbanisation, as a result of it, we are running the risk of the big fire, earthquake-like disasters. Seeing these disaster perceptions, the role of Aapda Mitra volunteers is significant,” Saxena added.

    The LG also inaugurated the newly built Atal Incubation Centre’ and auditorium-cum-placement centre & open air theatre’ of the Dwarka campus of the university.

    Delhi Principal Secretary (Home) Ashwani Kumar said a total of 1,800 Aapda Mitras are being trained as a part of this drive.

    As many as 600 volunteers are being trained by IP University and the rest 1,200 volunteers are being trained by Skill Corporation of India to meet any disaster needs of Delhi.

    IP University will train 600 Aapda Mitra volunteers selected by Delhi Disaster Management Authority.

    The university will conduct this training programme in a phased manner. At first, training programme for 100 such volunteers has been started today.

    The duration of this basic intensive training programme is 12 days.

    The training module for these volunteers has been prepared by the Centre of Excellence in Disaster Management (CEMS) of the University with close coordination with DDMA. The training for the next batch will start after the successful completion of a training programme for the previous batch.

    The Aapda Mitra programme was launched by the National Disaster Management Authority in May 2016 with a focus on training community volunteers with the skills that they would need to respond to their community’s immediate needs in the aftermath of a disaster thereby enabling them to undertake basic relief and rescue tasks during emergency situations such as floods, cyclone, earthquake, fire, etc.

    BRASILIA (Reuters) – U.S. Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry did not announce a figure for U.S. donations to fight deforestation in Brazil after a first meeting with Brazilian government representatives, but a plan to action should be announced on Tuesday, said the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva.

    The minister’s team has already confirmed that there should be a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, after a working meeting with Kerry and the delegations of both countries.

    ′′ Who will announce the value is the Biden government in the opportune time for them. They depend on Congress, nothing will be done that disregards the dynamics of each country,” Marina told reporters after the meeting.

    “Brazil works so that we can have, as quickly as possible, the contributions that are being made by the different governments, as already signaled, for example, by Germany. But each country has its time and its internal dynamics.”

    The Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, reported having spoken with Kerry about technical cooperation and investment in research for sustainable production, which, defends Fávaro, could come from the Amazon Fund.

    “We talk a lot about cooperation, research. They have the world’s largest temperate climate research company and tropical climate nodes. If we unite, we can together, through Embrapa, find innovative solutions. Brazil is an example of no-till planting, nitrogenous dispensing, an innovation that the US does not have”, said the Minister of Agriculture.

    “We are going to promote technical cooperation, investment partnership, in the Amazon Fund.     Earlier, upon leaving the meeting with Kerry, vice president Geraldo Alckmin clarified that the US special envoy had not spoken of values, but that he had guaranteed that he would work together with his government, Congress and private companies in the North -American companies to guarantee “large resources” in contributions, whether for the Amazon Fund or for other options negotiated with the Brazilian government.

    “We are going to revisit the framework agreement that was made by Brazil and the US in 2015. This framework agreement has several themes that need to be updated in light of the interests of President Lula’s government and the Biden government. It has to do with protecting the forest, climate, tackling inequalities, strengthening democracies, but betting on the energy transition, facing the major issues on the global environmental agenda, including issues that have to do with this cooperation in terms of trade,” he said. .

    So far, the Brazilian government has signaled donations from France, Spain and the United Kingdom to the Amazon Fund.     Initiated by Germany and Norway to support the country’s forest protection and sustainable development projects, the Fund has so far received donations of US$1.3 billion.

    The Minister of the Environment was asked about the increase in deforestation in February, which in two weeks broke the record for the entire month since 2015, when the historical series began.

    According to Marina, there is a “kind of revenge” against the actions that are being taken by the government in the region.

    “Right now we are identifying that there is criminal action even in the rainy season, advancing deforestation. We are preparing to face this confrontation”, said the minister, noting that she took the ministry as “scorched earth”.

    “We are still two months into the government, the deforestation prevention and control plan will be updated and reimplemented from April, when we will conclude the plan. But even so, we are taking emergency action on several fronts, on the Yanomami front, on the front of deforestation and other crimes that happen throughout Brazil, ”he said.

    SRINAGAR: The Union government is considering a phased withdrawal of Indian Army from the hinterland of the Kashmir Valley, according to a report.

    Newspaper The Indian Express on Monday reported that the Narendra Modi government is considering a plan to withdraw the Army from the interior of Kashmir in a phased manner and replace it with Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel.

    The report says the plan has been in the making for around two years and the Union Ministries of Defence and Home Affairs along with the military and J&K Police are part of the deliberations.

    The Modi government’s plan is in “advanced stage” and it is a matter of when rather than if, reported The Indian Express.

    However, the final call is yet to be taken on the plans and it’s still in the deliberative phase for now.

    The Indian Express reports that the withdrawal is not just a sign of normalcy in Kashmir Valley but it’s a way to make the normalcy visible as the Modi government believes the security situation has improved since August 2019 when the J&K’s special status was scrapped.

    On August 5, 2019, the Modi government scrapped the special status of J&K, converted it from a state into a Union Territory (UT), and bifurcated it into two UTs of J&K and Ladakh. Since then, the Modi government has claimed that the security situation has improved and stone-pelting has reduced.

    A Union Home Ministry official told The Indian Express, “Since the August 5, 2019 decisions, violence in the Valley has steadily reduced. Stone pelting has almost vanished and the law-and-order situation is largely under control. However, a large presence of the Indian Army in the hinterland would sit oddly with claims of normalcy.”

    If the plan is implemented, then the Army would only be deployed in forward areas of Kashmir along the Line of Control (LoC), the de-fecto India-Pakistan border.

    If the Modi government approves the plan, then the Army would first be removed from two districts and then further action would be taken based on the resultant security situation, according to report.

    The stand of the Indian Army is to reduce the numbers of Rashtriya Rifles (RR) personnel in Kashmir.

    The Express reports, “The official said that one proposal discussed is to remove the Rashtriya Rifles (RR) of the Indian Army in three phases and replace them with CRPF…Another official, privy to details of the discussions, said as of now the Army is only talking about decreasing the strength and not removing RR completely. The Army, according to defence sources, is already planning a resizing.”

    As per the report, first companies in existing battalions would be reduced and this way around 15,000 personnel could be freed from interior regions.

    Notably, several thousand additional security personnel were deployed in Kashmir region around the time J&K’s special status was scrapped.
