Can Trump’s ‘Straight Man’ Lighten Up?

    [ad_1]

At the last gridiron he attended in 2018, Pence found himself as the punchline, not its deliverer. Trump, who had agreed to speak that year, took aim at Pence: “I really am proud to call him the apprentice.” Trump told the crowd that to prepare, he had talked to some “of the funniest people around the White House, starting with my No. 2: Mike Pence! Oh, I love you, Mike. Some of you may think that Mike is not a comedian, but he is one of the best straight men you’re ever going to meet. … He is straight!”

Pence sat with Karen to Trump’s left, red-faced and seemingly embarrassed by his boss’ potshot

Since then Pence has struggled to emerge from Trump’s shadow. In recent months, he has done more than perhaps any of his GOP competitors to distinguish himself from Trump — on his actions on January 6, on his wobbling support for aid for Ukraine, on not committing to backing Trump as the nominee.

Pence is not the first national politician who has struggled to let his full self into public view. There was Mitt Romney, who popular culture and commentators portrayed as stilted and awkward in his 2012 presidential bid. But Greg Whiteley’s 2014 Netflix documentary “Mitt” revealed him in more intimate moments as a mischievous wit. And Bob Dole, the former presidential candidate from Kansas, had a dust bowl-dry sense of humor that didn’t always register. Pence, for his part, is well aware of the Dole parallel, according to Atterholt, who has urged Pence to let his more gregarious self shine through. “Here’s a situation where these attributes are extremely flattering, and they’re unfortunately hidden,” he told me.

It’s doubtful Pence would ever try a Sununu-style roast of Trump. But can he dial up the heat, even a little? After all this is a guy who went out of his way to celebrate the creator of Garfield on the House floor. Garfield!

But for this humor gambit to actually work, Pence will have to embrace it and not just at a single inside-the-Beltway event. Whether Pence can let the world see this authentically goofy and charming part of his life story could be a decisive factor in how he fares in the up close and personal crucible of campaigning in early primary states such as Iowa. For a man who improvised his way through thousands of hours of calls from radio listeners, who can dash off a compelling caricature of a new acquaintance in a matter of seconds, who can deadpan his way through a speech on the stump, it’s not impossible to imagine that person doing well in a presidential campaign.

Can Mike Pence become the candidate Americans want to have a non-alcoholic beer with? That is a question only Pence can answer, Atterholt told me. “It’s not his staff who is holding him back,” he said.

Last November, in a Raleigh hotel conference room, at the end of an interview with Pence, I asked Pence to give me a taste of his vaunted “Dubya” imitation.

“Well, you got to be in the moment,” Pence demurred.

“You got to give him two minutes,” Marc Short, his longtime senior adviser, urged Pence. “Tell him the story of you going to the immigration meeting.”

Pence conceded and told me a story about going to the Oval Office to meet Bush during the immigration reform debate in 2006, during which Pence had co-authored a guest-worker proposal that was going to be part of the final package.

“President said, ‘Do you mind if I ask you a personal question?” Pence recounted, nailing W.’s Crawford, Texas, twang. “Well, I noticed you’re not exactly from a border state,” Pence’s W. continued. It was legitimately funny. But despite the laughs he got, Pence didn’t milk the moment. He quickly dropped the mimicry and shifted back to his more familiar earnest mode.

We soon said our goodbyes and then he ducked out to a donor lunch, and then a Senate campaign event.

I haven’t seen much evidence of his lighter side since that encounter. But he’s got a show Saturday night.

  • UK man credits Apple Watch for warning him of undiagnosed heart condition

UK man credits Apple Watch for warning him of undiagnosed heart condition

    [ad_1]

London: A UK-based man has credited Apple Watch for pointing medics towards an undiagnosed heart condition.

Author Adam Croft, 36, from Flitwick in Bedfordshire, UK, awoke to find his Apple device had been alerting him throughout the night that his heart was in Atrial fibrillation, reports BBC.

“It’s not a feature I’d ever expected to use,” he was quoted as saying.

In an interview, Croft said that he had got up from the sofa one evening and “felt a bit dizzy” but when he got to the kitchen to get some water he “immediately felt the world closing in.”

“I managed to get down on the floor and ended up in a pool of cold sweat,” he said.

The next morning, he woke to find that his watch had been alerting him every couple of hours that his heart was in a rhythm known as Atrial fibrillation — and that he should seek medical attention.

“I called 111 (UK medical helpline) who said get to hospital within the hour,” Croft said.

Additional testing at Bedford Hospital in the UK confirmed that Croft was in Atrial fibrillation. Croft claims he would not have gone to the hospital if he hadn’t received an alert from his Apple Watch, the report said.

Moreover, the writer claimed to have previously experienced “little flutterings” of the heart that his watch had missed, but these had not occurred in months.

He had also “never had any pain or symptoms that I thought were serious.”

The report said that after testing confirmed the Atrial fibrillation, doctors put Croft on blood thinners.

He will now undergo a cardioversion procedure, which involves the use of “quick, low-energy shocks to restore a regular heart rhythm.”

Croft concluded, saying: “The watch will be staying on now.”

2 found guilty of murdering man outside Hindu temple in UK

    [ad_1]

London: Two men have been found guilty of fatally stabbing a man outside a Hindu temple located in South East of England, media reports said.

Mohammed Rafaqit Kayani, 24, from Slough, was found injured in the temple car park in Keel Drive on August 30, 2022 and died later in hospital, the BBC reported.

A jury at Reading Crown Court convicted Hassan Al-Kubanji, 22, of Pimlico in London, and drug dealer Riaz Miah, 21, of no fixed address on Thursday, adjourning their sentencing until April 3.

While Miah previously pleaded guilty to supplying heroin and cocaine as well as possessing a blade in public, the jury found Al-Kubanji not guilty of the same three offences.

A third defendant, Miguel Parian John, 42, was found guilty of assisting an offender and two counts of blade possession.

However, he was cleared of two counts of possessing cocaine and heroin with intent to supply, the report said.

John will be sentenced at a later date.

According to a Reading Chronicle report, the defendants began shouting after the verdict and a brawl broke out in the court with riot police being called subsequently.

Kayani, a keen boxer and a Virgin Atlantic Heathrow check-in agent, was stabbed in the chest and collapsed in a pool of blood.

He was chased from a playground in Concorde Way to the Slough Hindu Temple after an “altercation”, according to media reports.

The Reading Crown Court heard earlier that Miah and Al-Kubanji were allegedly “defending themselves” from Kayani and his friend Adil Mahmood.

Kayani’s wife described him as “a loving son, caring brother, selfless friend and proud Muslim man”.

Lookout circular issued against man for duping people via Dubai-based betting app

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: A Lookout Circular was issued against a person who was accused of duping around 800 people of crores of rupees through a betting app operated from Dubai.

The Bureau of Immigration (BoI) issued the Lookout Circular, used by authorities to restrict the movement of a travelling person who is wanted, at the request of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Odisha police.

The agency on Thursday said it will reward anyone giving credible information leading to the arrest of the accused, identified as Md Saif who has several addresses in India.

The EOW has lodged an FIR based on the complaint of about 800 investors of Odisha’s Ganjam district who were allegedly duped by the accused.

They were lured into putting their money into 18football.com, a betting/gaming website and a mobile app, with a promise of a three per cent daily compound return on investment. Besides, they were told that they will get different types of bonuses, the EOW said.

They were asked to bet money on some football matches advised by the website/app. They were also provided with “mentors” to assist them in betting.

The 18football.com scam involved people across the state and the fraud amount involved is suspected to be more than Rs 1000 crore, out of which EOW has been able to trace transactions of approximately Rs 300 crore till now.

The operators of the app were engaged in social work and charity in rural areas to make people believe that it was a bonafide organisation.

“The fraudsters initially paid the promised return to the investors. When the membership increased, they stopped making any payment and closed the app. They used multiple shell companies to route the ill-gotten money,” the EOW said in a statement.

One such company was based in Kolkata and its two directors were arrested earlier.

“They had confessed to have got small amounts of commission to run the shell company and received orders from Md Saif from Dubai,” the statement added.

Anyone giving credible information on phone no 8249600495, leading to the arrest of the accused, will be suitably awarded, the agency said, adding that name and details of the informer will be kept secret.
