Man held for blackmailing, sexually harassing girls on Instagram

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A 22-year-old man was arrested from Punjab for allegedly sexually harassing minor girls on Instagram, police said on Sunday.

The accused threatened the minors that he will share their morphed nude photos on social media if his demands of “sexual favours” are not met, they said.

He has been identified as Jatin, police said, adding he was nabbed from his native place Kapurthala in Punjab. Police said the accused was working as a waiter in the UAE for the past three years.

The matter came to light in February after a minor girl complained that she was being blackmailed by an unidentified Instagram user who had nine different Instagram IDs, they said.

The accused created morphed nude photographs of the victim and sent them to her on her Instagram account, police said.

According to the complainant, the man started demanding her nudes by threatening her that he will share these morphed nude pictures in her school group. She became scared and sent her nudes to him with the promise that he will put an end to his nonsense. But after getting her photographs, the accused started demanding sex from her and asked her to meet him in a hotel in Paharganj. The girl refused and narrated the incident to her parents and teachers, police said.

Thereafter, the victim’s father approached Cyber West police station and a case was registered, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Ghanshyam Bansal said during the course of the investigation, a police team established communication with Meta Platforms Inc and obtained the details of the suspect’s Instagram IDs used by him for blackmailing the minor girls.

After obtaining the details from Instagram, it was learned that the accused has registered all the Instagram ID’s by using a UAE mobile number. Thereafter, with the help of technical surveillance, his identity was revealed as Jatin and he was arrested from Kapurthala, Punjab, the police officer said.

“During interrogation, the accused confessed to his crime and disclosed that he was working as a waiter in the UAE for the last three years. While in the UAE, he indulged in blackmailing minor girls based in India with a promise to meet them when he will return to India,” Bansal said.

“He (accused) belongs to a middle-class family and had dreams to live a lavish life but due to the shortage of money, he could not get his dreams fulfilled. So, he started targeting minor girls for fulfilling his ill desires,” he said.

Three mobile phones containing data of blackmailing and extortion were seized from him, police said.

  • Uttar Pradesh man who rescued, cared for Sarus crane booked

Uttar Pradesh man who rescued, cared for Sarus crane booked

    [ad_1]

Amethi: The Forest department has filed a case and issued a notice to an Uttar Pradesh man who rescued a Sarus crane and took care of it for a year, officials said.

The crane, which lived with Arif Khan Gurjar in the Mandkha village of Amethi district, accompanied him to his fields and was accepted “like a family member”, was taken away by Forest department officials on March 21.

The bird was shifted to the Samaspur sanctuary in Rae Bareli to allow it to live in its natural environment, an official had said.

On Saturday, the department issued a notice to Gurjar and asked him to appear at the office of the Gauriganj divisional forest officer on April 4 to record his statement.

According to the notice issued by Assistant Divisional Forest Officer (Gauriganj) Ranvir Singh, Gurjar has been booked under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act.

A day after the bird was taken away, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav held a press conference during which he condemned the Forest department action and asked indirectly if any official had the courage to take away the peacocks at the prime minister’s residence.

Gurjar sat on the dais with the former chief minister but did not speak.

Yadav had visited Gurjar after he gained fame due to his “friendship” with the bird. He had also shared pictures of himself with the bird and Gurjar on social media.

Responding to Yadav’s allegations, Divisional Forest Officer DN Singh had said, “Whatever action has been taken is with Arif’s (Gurjar) consent.”

The official said these birds always live in pairs. Since this one was living alone, there was some apprehension about its wellbeing.

On Thursday, Yadav alleged that the crane had gone missing before being rescued by some local residents. Forest officials, however, had denied the claim.

Man sentenced to 100 years in prison for causing Indian-origin girl’s death in US

    [ad_1]

Washington: A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to 100 years of hard labour for causing the death of a 5-year-old Indian-origin girl in the US state of Louisiana in 2021, according to local media reports.

Joseph Lee Smith from Shreveport was sentenced following his conviction in January of the killing of Mya Patel, local news media outlets like KSLA News 12 and the Shreveport Times reported.

Patel was playing in a hotel room on Monkhouse Drive when a bullet entered her room and struck her in the head. Patel was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she battled for three days and was pronounced dead on March 23, 2021.

During Smith’s trial, it was revealed to the jury that Smith got into an altercation with another man in the parking lot of the Super 8 Motel.

The hotel was owned and operated at that time by Vimal and Snehal Patel, who lived in a ground-floor unit with Mya and a younger sibling.

During the altercation, Smith struck the other man with a 9-mm handgun, which discharged. The bullet missed the other man but went into the hotel room and struck Patel in the head before grazing her mother.

District Judge John D Mosely sentenced Smith to 60 years at hard labour without the benefit of probation, parole or reduction of sentence in connection with the March 2021 slaying of Mya Patel, reports said.

Smith also must serve 20 years for obstruction of justice and 20 years for aggravated battery, for separate convictions associated with Patel’s slaying. Those terms must also be served without the benefit of probation, parole or reduction of sentence, the reports said.

On Thursday, the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office said: “the terms were enhanced by Smith being a repeat felony offender and must be served consecutively, for a total of 100 years.”

Man gets message to replace Tricolour with Khalistan flag; case filed

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi Police has registered a case against unidentified people for recording and circulating an audio message containing the threat to remove the Indian flag from Pragati Maidan, the venue for the high-profile G-20 meeting in September.

The case was registered as the complaint of a man who received a pre-recorded message on his phone when he arrived at the Delhi airport.

In the message, the alleged Khalistan supporter was talking about taking over Pragati Maidan and removing the Indian flag. Later, the person also allegedly talked about ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh, they said.

A case under sections 153 (provocation with intent to cause riot), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion etc), and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code was registered at IGI Airport Police Station, they said.

The case has been transferred to the Special Cell unit of the Delhi Police, they added.

Singh, the radical preacher, is on the run after the Punjab Police arrested several of his supporters in a major crackdown that began weeks after the group stormed the Ajnala Police Station near Amritsar to secure the release of an arrested associate.

The episode raised fears over the possibility of the return of Khalistani militancy to the state that borders Pakistan.

Police said efforts are on to trace Amritpal Singh. A lookout circular and a non-bailable warrant have been issued against the Khalistan sympathizer.
