British man pleads guilty to ISIS related terror charges in UK

    [ad_1]

London: A British man arrested at Heathrow Airport over a year ago when he flew back from Pakistan pleaded guilty on Friday to travelling to Syria to join the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist network.

Shabazz Suleman, who grew up in the High Wycombe area of Buckinghamshire in south-east England, was due to study international relations at university when he vanished while on a family holiday to Turkey in 2014, aged 19.

He was arrested after returning to the UK via Pakistan in October 2021 and charged with a string of terror offences and was due to face trial at the Old Bailey court in London next month. He has now pleaded guilty to preparing acts of terrorism by travelling from the UK to Turkey in order to join ISIS in Syria in August 2014.

Now aged 27, Suleman was also charged with being a member of ISIS, a proscribed organisation, between 2014 and 2017, and receiving training in the use of firearms. Judge Mark Lucraft remanded him in custody until sentencing on May 26.

In an interview with Sky News’ in 2017, Suleman had claimed he spent most of his three years in terrorist territory playing PlayStation and riding his bike.

He spoke about how he’d gone into hiding to try to avoid fighting, sitting in various houses in Raqqa playing Grand Theft Auto or Metal Gear Solid on a PlayStation and having “a normal life in IS territory”.

In Syria, he is said to have assumed the name Abu Shamil al-Britani and is alleged to have carried out guard duty and patrols for ISIS. By June 2015 he had reportedly become disillusioned, saying, “I never thought I was being brainwashed until I saw the way they treat other Sunnis”.

Speaking after leaving ISIS, Suleman told Sky News’: “I take responsibility. I was with ISIS, I was with a terrorist organisation. But I didn’t kill anyone, I hope I didn’t oppress anyone.

“I did have Kalashnikov and a military uniform, but I didn’t hit anyone, I didn’t oppress anyone, if you understand. I was there with military police but like I said, I was in the office.”

Suleman is believed to be among hundreds of British nationals who travelled to the Middle East to join the ranks of ISIS and other terror networks in Syria and Iraq over the years.

Man poses as rich bachelor to cheat people on matrimonial site, held

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A man was arrested for cheating innocent people by projecting himself as a rich bachelor on a matrimonial site, and used expensive cars to impress his victims, a Delhi Police official said on Friday.

The accused identified as Vishal, a resident of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, further duped the victims by offering iPhones at cheaper rates and got the money transferred.

According to police, the complainant, a 26-year-old woman, reported to the police that her parents made her profile on a matrimony site, and she came across Vishal’s profile.

“He projected himself as a HR professional having an income of Rs 50-70 lakh per annum. He won over her trust and convinced her to purchase iPhones at cheaper rates for her relatives and friends. She transferred a total of Rs 3,05,799 in eight transactions,” said Jitendra Kumar Meena, Deputy Commissioner of Police (north-west).

“After blocking her on social media platforms, he informed her that he met with an accident and was admitted to a hospital in Jaipur, and stopped attending her calls,” said the DCP.

“After some days of incident, posing as a decoy a request on the same matrimonial site was sent to the alleged man. He accepted the request and started influencing her in a similar manner, by projecting himself as a HR professional and rich bachelor. The decoy female asked him for a meeting and when he came to meet her, he was nabbed,” said the official.

During interrogation, Vishal confessed to his involvement in this cheating and disclosed that after completion of his studies of BCA and MBA from Delhi, he worked as a HR professional in a MNC in Gurugram in 2018.

“Vishal left his job in 2021 and started his business by opening a restaurant in Gurugram, which was not successful. He made a profile on a matrimonial site — Jeevnasathi.com — and projected himself as a rich bachelor,” said the official.

In order to create an impression, he hired an expensive car for 15 days through an app and paid Rs 2500 per day. He showed some villas and farmhouses as his properties in Gurugram and also projected his well-off business of a food chain in Gurugram, in order to win over the trust of families looking for suitable matches.

“He offered iPhone-14 pro max at a cheaper rate and convinced the victim to buy it, in order to earn profit,” said the official, adding that further efforts are being made to trace his possible involvement in other similar complaints also and his bank account details are further being scrutinised.

  • Hyderabad: Man arrested for waving Godse’s photo at Ram Navami rally

Hyderabad: Man arrested for waving Godse’s photo at Ram Navami rally

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Shahinayathgunj police here arrested the man who carried the picture of Gandhiji’s killer, Nathuram Godse, during the Sri Ram Navami Shobha Yatra (rally) on March 30. The accused has been identified as Chinta Hema Kumar, 21, a resident of Siddiqnagar in Gachibowli.

According to the police, Kumar carried the photograph of Nathuram, who shot Mahatma Gandhi to dead in public in 1948. A video clip of Kumar holding the photograph and marching in the procession had gone viral and drew wide criticism on social media. The police booked a case under 504 of IPC after the incident and arrested him.

Kumar was produced before a local magistrate and remanded.

In the Ram Navami rally in Hyderabad, suspended Goshamahal BJP MLA Raja Singh also joined the main procession when it passed via Mangalhat. It was there that the portrait of Godse appeared. People who joined Singh’s fringe rally waved photos of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin.

The annual Sri Ram Navami Shobha Yatra here has become a show of strength for Hindutva groups to flex. The procession has also become a launchpad for Hindutva mascot and suspended BJP MLA Raja Singh to release new inflammatory ‘songs’ every year. In 2022, he sang a song degenerating Muslims and threatened to “kick” them out of India if they “don’t chant Ram’s name”. This year was no different.

Raja Singh as a practice has been singing songs and releasing them during the Sri Rama Navami festival each year. One of latest songs, ‘Baap Tu Baap Rahega’, was clearly a dig at the ruling government (or even the cops) for arresting him last year and putting him in the jail under the PD Act after he released a video passing derogatory comments against Prophet Muhammad. He did that in retaliation against the state got allowing comic Munawar Faurqui to hold a show.

The MLA released a few more songs at his mega saffron rally, which were officially uploaded on some Youtube Channels and played during the Shobha Yatra procession. The lyrics this year also mention his PD Act detention following registration of a series of cases for making derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammed in a video and also old cases booked against him for delivering hate speeches. The lyrics goes ‘Jail Ka Taala Tuth Gaya, Baap Tumhara Choot Gaya’.

The song is of 5:10 minutes duration. People who joined Singh’s Hindutva rally waved photos of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin, now a beloved Hindutva figure. Raja Singh was eventually booked by the police in different cases after the Ram Navami rally.

Indian-origin man gets jailed for TikTok video targetting Dalits

    [ad_1]

London: A 68-year-old Indian-origin man has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment by a UK court over a video he posted on social media found to be offensive to certain communities.

Amrik Bajwa from Slough in Berkshire, south-east England, was sentenced and fined GBP 240 last week after pleading guilty to one count of sending by public communication network an offensive/indecent/obscene/menacing message or matter.

“Following a Thames Valley Police investigation, a man has been sentenced for sending an offensive message using social media,” the police said in a statement on Tuesday.

    MS Education Academy

The post related to a video he posted on TikTok on July 19 last year reportedly targeted the Dalit community.

“I am pleased with the sentence given, which provides a clear message that Thames Valley Police will not tolerate behaviour like that of Amrik Bajwa,” said Sergeant Andrew Grant, the investigating officer on the case from the Slough police station.

“As a force, we are committed to protecting our communities and ensuring that criminal actions which have the potential to undermine community cohesion are dealt with robustly,” he said.

Bajwa was arrested a few days after his post, on July 22 last year, and charged via postal requisition on March 2 this year.

The Anti Caste Discrimination Alliance (ACDA), a voluntary human rights organisation campaigning against caste-based discrimination in the UK, was among the organisations to complain about the offensive “casteist” post which it characterised as hate speech targeted at Dalit communities.

“The 18 weeks sentence in jail reflects the severity of the harm Amrik Bajwa’s video caused the Dalit community,” said a spokesperson for the ACDA.

“We understand the conviction did not specifically refer to caste’ because caste is not yet a protected characteristic in law. But the Crime Prosecution Service (CPS) shared at the hearing the derogatory words choora’ and chaamar’ that Mr Bajwa used. The video that Amrik Singh Bajwa posted on TikTok in 2022 was highly toxic and casteist in content,” the spokesperson said.

The ACDA said the conviction was the result of several community organisations working together. The Thames Valley Police thanked all the key witnesses who helped with the force’s investigation into the case.

Muslim man poisons children, kills self after UP officials threaten to demolish home

    [ad_1]

A 50-year-old man named Mohammed Saleem, a resident of Shadi ki Madaiyan, Rampur district of Uttar Pradesh consumed poison along with his two children aged eight and six on Friday after administration sleuths arbitrarily informed him his house would be demolished.

The man and his daughter died on Saturday morning however, his son survived and is admitted to a local hospital.

The tragic incident took place after revenue officials allegedly visited Saleem’s house and told him that his house would be bulldozed as it was allegedly built on government land.

    MS Education Academy

The deceased was working at a tyre repair shop in his locality.

According to the locals, in 2016, Saleem purchased land for Rs 1,90,00 and built a house on it.

According to a report published in The Times of India, the land he purchased, used to be part of a dried-up pond.

Notably, 20 other people had purchased land next to Saleem which is part of the dried-up pond. They were unaware that the land was given on lease to the seller by the revenue department.

“In 2021, Saleem along with 20 people were served legal notices by the court of tehsildar in which they were asked that their houses have encroached on Garam Samaj land, however, the case related it is still pending in court and no further order was delivered as yet,” Sub-divisional Magistrate Nirankar Singh was quoted by TOI.

As per a TOI report, Mehtab Jahan, wife of Saleem, claimed that several officials visited their house and told her husband that their house would be demolished soon as per court order.

She further alleged that previously they had received a notice from the tehsildar court demanding them a ransom of Rs 64 lakh.

“I have lost my daughter and husband. I want justice from the government,” she said.

Relative of Saleem alleged that, on Thursday, the revenue officials took Saleem’s thumbprint on some documents however, the officials are denying it now.

“As Saleem is not a reader, they took his thumbprint on some documents, nothing of which he understood,” said a relative.

UP man ties stone to rat’s tail & drowns it; 30-page chargesheet filed

    [ad_1]

Budaun: UP Police have filed a 30-page chargesheet in a Budaun court against a man who allegedly tied a stone to a rat’s tail and drowned it in a drain in November last year, an official said on Tuesday.

The police investigation joined “each and every sequence” and prepared the chargesheet based on the forensic report, videos in the media, and information collected from different departments, Circle Officer (City) Alok Mishra told PTI.

Police sources said to make the chargesheet strong, the post-mortem examination report has been used as a base. The report indicated the rodent had lung and liver infection and died due to asphyxiation caused by lung infection.

    MS Education Academy

On November 25, police received a complaint against Manoj Kumar for cruelty against an animal. Police said animal activist Vikendra Sharma reported them that Kumar threw a rat into a drain after tying a stone to its tail. Sharma said he entered the drain to save the rat but it died later.

On Tuesday, senior advocate Rajiv Kumar Sharma told PTI, “Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, there is a provision of fine from Rs 10 to Rs 2,000 and three years of imprisonment. And under Section 429 of IPC, there is a provision for five years of imprisonment or fine or both.”

Kumar’s father Mathura Prasad, however, said, “Killing of rats and crows is not wrong. These are harmful creatures.”

“Rats had damaged the utensils made using soil, and had turned them into mounds of soil. This caused mental and financial problems to him. If action is taken against my son, then action should also be taken against those who butcher goats, hens and fishes. Action should also be taken against those who sell the rat killing chemical,” Prasad added.

After the incident in November, the rat’s carcass was sent to a veterinary hospital in Budaun for autopsy but the staff refused to examine it. The carcass was then sent to Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly.

Kumar was called to the police station for questioning. He was later booked under IPC Section 429 (slaughtering an animal) and also under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, police said.

Later, the forensic examination showed the rat’s lungs were swollen and it died due to a lung infection. “Our experts concluded the rat died due to asphyxiation caused by lung infection,” KP Singh, joint director of IVRI, had said then.
