Pakistan’s first transgender news anchor, Marvia Malik, cheated death when she was attacked by gunmen outside her residence in Lahore on the night of February 23.

According to Dawn, Malik was returning from a pharmacy when two men opened fire. In a statement to the police, Malik claimed she had been receiving frequent threatening calls and messages from unknown numbers. She also claimed that her activism was a “major factor” behind the assassination attempt.

Malik is currently residing outside Lahore to ensure her safety.

Last year, the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) had appealed to the Pakistani government to review the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2018 as it is not in line with the Shariah,” as “several of its provisions are inconsistent with Islamic principles”.

    Who is Marvia Malik

In 2018, Marvia Malik made history by becoming the country’s first transgender news anchor on air. She was born in Lahore in 1997 with two other siblings. She was often bullied and taunted by her classmates as a child and a college student.

“Like other trans people, I did not get any support from my family. On my own, I did some menial jobs and continued my studies. I had always wanted to be a news anchor, and my dream came true when I got selected,” she had said to American broadcaster Voice of America in a telephonic interview.

She worked as a makeup artist to fund her higher studies, before pursuing a career in mass media. She graduated from Lahore’s Punjab University.

In another interview with the news agency Associated Press, she mentioned how even after getting a degree a job was beyond her reach. “Our degrees are of no use…even if we seek jobs, we get rejected due to our identity, I want to change this mindset,” she said.

  • Public is ‘malik’ remarks Rijiju amid tussle with SC

Public is ‘malik’ remarks Rijiju amid tussle with SC

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: A day after the Supreme Court warned of action for any delay in clearing transfer and appointment of judges, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday said the country will be governed according to the Constitution and wishes of the people and nobody can give warning to anyone.

“Public is ‘malik’ (master) of this country and we are servants. We all are here for service and the Constitution is our guide…. The country will be governed under the guidance of the Constitution and wishes of the public. Nobody can give warning to anyone,” Rijiju said.

“Sometimes discussions are held in the country on some matters and in a democracy everyone has the right to express their opinion. But people sitting in responsible positions have to think before saying anything, whether it will benefit the country or not,” he said, referring to reported remarks of a Supreme Court bench.

The minister was addressing an event on the 150th anniversary of the Allahabad High Court Bar Association here as the chief guest.

His remarks came a day after a bench of Justices S K Kaul and A S Oka expressed displeasure over the delay in clearing recommendations for transfer of high court judges, calling it a “very serious issue”, and warned that any delay in this matter may result in both administrative and judicial actions which might not be palatable.

On Saturday, the Supreme Court also questioned the government over the delay in clearing the names of five high court judges who had been recommended for elevation to the Supreme Court. The judges were elevated to the Supreme Court on Sunday.

The remarks are the latest in a tug of war between the judiciary and the executive over the process of appointment of judges of the Supreme Court and high courts.

  • Video of Md Siraj, Umran Malik refusing tilak surfaces, right-wingers create furore

Video of Md Siraj, Umran Malik refusing tilak surfaces, right-wingers create furore

    [ad_1]

A video of Team India cricketers Mohammed Siraj and Umran Malik’s refusal to apply tilak on their forehead in a hotel reception in Nagpur ahead of the four-match Test series against Australia has stirred up a storm with right-wing Twitter targetting the two Muslim fast bowlers for their choice.

The video has gone viral with around 842.1K views. It shows the hotel staff welcoming the players along with head coach and former cricketer Rahul Dravid by applying tilak on their foreheads. When Siraj’s turn came, he politely refused. So did Umran Malik.

Applying tilak is traditionally a Hindu and Jain custom for welcoming guests.

The video, posted by a Anveshka Das, has evoked strong reactions from right-wing elements. Interestingly Das has used many trending hashtags, as far as #RipLegend, in order to gain momentum for the video in the algorithm.

Although there are two other people who also refused the tilak in the video, right-wing and Hindutva elements have put their entire focus on the Muslim cricketers. However many have come in Siraj and Malik’s defense pointing out their action does not describe communally.

Right-wing news channel Sudarshan TV’s editor-in-chief Suresh Chavhanke tweeted the video with the hashtag ‘jago’ which means wake up.

“Mohammad Siraj and Umran Malik did not get tika applied on their foreheads at the reception. He is a player of the Indian team, not Pakistan. Even after becoming an international cricketer, he is staunch towards his religion. #Jago,” he tweeted.

Arun Yadav, a hard-line Hindutva worker and an ardent fan of Chavhanke tweeted the video by saying, “Some puncture mark celebrities don’t get vaccinated because they are fanatic about their religion even after reaching that level. But we don’t miss wearing cap and offering sheet.”

Yogi Devnath (@YogiDevnath2), another Hindutva worker tweeted the same. Another Hindutva member called darksoul (@iam_darksoul) tagged Virat Kohli and BCCI called out the Muslim cricketers as deceitful.

“This is a tight slap on @imVkohli @Jaspritbumrah93 @BCCI @ImRo45 who preach Hindus on Hindu festivals. Both of these @mdsirajofficial & @umran_malik_01 are deceitful, for them their religion is superior than nation. siraj#MohammedSiraj#UmranMalik#shami siraj umran सिराज.”

Another Twitter user named Arun Pudur (@arunpudur) has tagged Seetu Mahajan Kohli saying, “According to Ms@kohliseetu, Sanatan Tilak is ‘Silly Culture’, but, Islamic Bisht is a ‘Honor’ as being ‘Knighted’.”

Mahajan tweeted, “Hotels need to stop this silly tradition. European hotels do not sprinkle holy water on you when you enter and nor do middle eastern hotel make you wear a hijab. We treat religion and personal space so casually in India. We are not entering a Mandir!!!”

However many pointed out the Hindutva’s hypocrisy. Alt News co-founder and fact checker Mohammed Zubair said that there were other also who refused the tilak – Vikram Rathour and Hari Prasad Mohan – batting coach and video analyst respectively, but no one is talking about them.

“Vikram Rathour & Hari Prasad Mohan didn’t apply tilak too. But @SureshChavhanke & other Right wing accounts want you to focus Muslim players Umran Malik & Mohammed Siraj,” Zubair tweeted.

Subhayan Chakraborty, a sports journalist also replied, “Vikram Rathour, Dayanand Garani among many others also did. Bohot shauk hai likes, RTs khane ka apko.”

Another Twitter user tweeted, “Why should they, if I may ask? The Hindus and Jains use tilaks as part of their cultural tradition. The individuals you named belong to a different faith altogether. Don’t try to build a mountain out of a molehill and incite hatred.”

Another Twitter user posted a meme of the Indian Prime Minister applying tilak tweeting, “#MohammedSiraj and #UmranMalik should have taken tips on how to avoid a Tika”

Many Hindus have condemned this and termed it as a “useless piece of information.

The reactions are a grim reminder of India’s divided status, thanks to religious politics playing round the clock.

  • Umran Malik Jaise Hamaare Domestic Cricket Mein Bhare Pade Hain; We Have 12-15 Bowlers Who Can Bowl 155KPH – Kashmir News

    [ad_1]

Umran Malik Jaise Hamaare Domestic Cricket Mein Bhare Pade Hain; We Have 12-15 Bowlers Who Can Bowl 155KPH

Umran Malik has been a great addition to the pace battery of team India in the recent series. After a successful Indian T20 League 2022 with the Hyderabad franchise, Umran Malik became a sensation. His sheer pace has been the talk of the town since his debut in the international arena.

Umran has been spoken of highly by not only former cricketers but some of the legendary pacers in world cricket. Having been mentored by the one and only Dale Steyn at Sunrisers Hyderabad and receiving solid backing from none other than the great Wasim Akram, Umran has rapidly caught everyone’s attention. Even Brett Lee, one of the fastest bowlers of all time, compared Umran to a Ferrari and was shocked at his omission from India’s T20 World Cup squad.

However, amid all this pomp, Pakistan pacer Sohail Khan has come up with yet another bizarre take, this time on Umran, saying that although the 23-year-old is a promising talent, ‘bowlers like him’ are very common in Pakistan’s domestic cricket structure.

Sohail Khan shared a statement over Umran Malik on Twitter that has now gone viral. However, fans remained confused as they failed to diagnose who this Sohail Khan is. However, he might be the cricketer who has played for the Men in Green. Sohail Khan said: “Umran Malik is a good bowler and I’ve seen him bowl. But we have 12-15 bowlers in Pakistan who play tape ball cricket and can bowl 155KPH.” Speaking of the career of Sohail Khan, he has played nine Tests where he has picked 27 wickets in 17 innings. Then, in 13 ODIs and 5 T20Is, Sohail Khan took 19 wickets and five wickets respectively.

Speaking about Umran Malik’s performance so far in 2023, he took seven wickets in the three-match T20I home series against Sri Lanka. Then, Umran Malik took five wickets in two ODIs against the Lankans at home. After that, he played only one ODI against the Kiwis where Umran took one wicket for 52 runs. In the recently concluded T20I series, Umran Malik took two wickets in two matches.

Here is how fans have reacted to the comment by Sohail Khan on Twitter:

Umran Malik jaise hamaare domestic cricket mein bhare pade hain

“I feel this Umran Malik guy is a good bowler. I’ve seen 1-2 matches. He runs fast and has kept other things is check as well. But if you think of fast bowlers with speed in excess of over 150-155 kph, I can count 12-15 players right now who play tape-ball cricket. If you go visit the trails organised by Lahore Qalandars, you’ll find many players,” Sohail said on The Nadir Ali podcast.

Iske (Umran Malik) jaise toh bohot hain. Domestic cricket bhari padi hai hamaari. (Our domestic setup is filled with bowlers like Umran Malik). When a bowler comes through in our domestic level, he becomes a bonafide bowler. Like Shaheen, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf… these are bowlers who know their stuff. I can give you plenty of names.”

Umran, one of the world’s quickest, has already bowled the fastest delivery by an Indian clocking in 156kph against Sri Lanka, and has been tipped as a threat to Shoaib Akhtar’s record for the fastest delivery of all time.

As of now, Umran Malik has played eight ODIs and T20Is so far for the Men in Blue. In those ODIs, he has taken 13 wickets at an economy of 6.45. In those T20Is, Umran has taken 11 wickets, at an economy of 10.48. So, fans have enjoyed the recent success of this young pacer in these two formats.
