San Francisco: The losses of Microsoft-backed OpenAI, the developer behind highly-successful AI chatbot ChatGPT, reportedly swelled to nearly $540 million last year and are likely to only keep rising.

According to The Information, OpenAI’s losses doubled as it developed ChatGPT and hired key employees from Google.

“The previously unreported figure reflects the steep costs of training its machine-learning models during the period before it started selling access to the chatbot,” the report noted.

OpenAI in February this year launched the new subscription plan, ChatGPT Plus, that is available for $20 a month.

However, the report mentioned that even if the revenue picks up, OpenAI’s losses are likely to keep rising as “more customers use its artificial intelligence technology and the company trains future versions of the software”.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has “privately suggested OpenAI may try to raise as much as $100 billion in the coming years to achieve its aim of developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) that is advanced enough to improve its own capabilities”.

Elon Musk, Twitter CEO and an early investor in OpenAI, tweeted late on Saturday: “That’s what he (Altman) told me”.

Musk, who has criticised OpenAI several times, last month created a new company called X.AI which will promote AI in the ChatGPT era.

It was Musk who initially invested $100 million in OpenAI, but later exited the company.

In recent months, ChatGPT and GPT-4 have become a rage worldwide.

OpenAI recently closed a more than $300 million share sale at a valuation between $27-$29 billion, according to reports.

Bengaluru: With the Supreme Court looking into the same-sex marriage issue, one of the oldest civilisations, and the largest democracy in the world, waits with bated breath for the outcome.

For the LGBTQ community, after the historic moments in 2018 when homosexuality was finally decriminalised following the Supreme Court ruling, this could well be the next defining moment in its quest for equality in society.

Part of the prevailing optimism that things will change for the better, is fuelled by the changing societal attitudes towards issues like same-sex relationships.

    MS Education Academy

The slow but steady acceptance of movies in this genre is also playing a part in changing perceptions towards sexual minorities.

Realizing the limited opportunities available to the community to bring their stories to the screen, UK-based Indian filmmaker Neeraj Churi started Lotus Visual Productions with the sole purpose of producing and promoting South Asian LGBTQ+ films worldwide.

He has been associated with several film projects including ‘Sheer Qorma’ (2021), ‘Queer Parivaar’ (2022), ‘Gair’ (2022) and ‘Muhafiz’ (2022).

The latest production by Neeraj, ‘Ek Jagah Apni’, has received global recognition for its raw portrayal of the transgender community.

‘Ek Jagah Apni’ was also selected for Cannes Marche Du Film 2022 as part of NFDC-Goes-To-Cannes. The film premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival 2022 and won the Certificate of Merit as well as a special mention for two leads at the International Film Festival of Kerala 2022.

Churi feels that movies can be catalysts for societal change. “Those who are in the process of coming out, or are yet to come out probably feel more comfortable and less confused about their gender or orientation. They also feel less overwhelmed when they eventually decide to ‘come out’.”

Films and the media can build empathy and understanding. By amplifying marginalized voices and creating diverse perspectives, we can move towards a more equitable and just society where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

Cinema, when seen by the wider community hopefully helps them understand that the existence of the LGBTQ+ community is not just a Western implant, Churi told IANS.

He opined that legalizing same-sex marriage or broadening the term to marriage equality to include trans individuals, is not just a matter of equality, it’s a matter of dignity and humanity for those involved.

“It’s about providing the LGBTQ+ community with the same legal and social recognition that heterosexual couples receive. We are talking about access to insurance, medical benefits, financial nominations and the same benefits that spouses have. It’s about creating a more inclusive and accepting society that normalizes queer people as opposed to making them seem like objects to be afraid of,” he elaborated.

On a lighter note, the filmmaker feels that the legal sanctity of same-sex marriages will also lead to economic benefits for society at large.

“The Indian wedding industry is already a behemoth — $50 billion — and by opening it up to same-sex couples, we can tap into a whole new category of couples across the globe looking at India as a destination to get married. Here’s hoping that love prevails over hate and bias,” he signs off.

Abortion pill maker sues FDA to preserve access

    [ad_1]

    wr abortionpills

A ruling by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals now pending before the Supreme Court would unwind policies the FDA has approved since 2016 to make the abortion pill more accessible — including telemedicine prescription, mail delivery and retail pharmacy dispensing — and shrink the window of time patients are approved by FDA to take the drug from 10 to seven weeks of gestation — before many know they are pregnant.

The 5th Circuit’s decision, which endorses much of a challenge brought by the anti-abortion medical group Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, would also suspend the FDA’s 2019 approval of the generic version of mifepristone made by GenBioPro.

“If the AHM Fifth Circuit Order goes into effect, the result will be chaos,” GenBioPro warned in its suit. “No court in history has ever ‘stayed’ or ‘suspended’ a longstanding FDA approval, and FDA has no template for responding to — or implementing — those decisions.”

The FDA declined to comment on the litigation.

Making similar arguments to the company’s, some Democratic lawmakers and activists have recently demanded that the Biden administration ignore a potential court order suspending approval of the pill or direct the FDA to use enforcement discretion to keep the pill on the market.

GenBioPro claims that, before suing, it repeatedly approached the FDA to ask what the process would be for suspending approval and what rights the company has under that scenario and received no response.

“Notwithstanding the exigent circumstances and the numerous tools available to FDA, FDA has repeatedly refused to assure GenBioPro or the public that it will afford GenBioPro adequate procedures before suspending GenBioPro’s … approval,” the company wrote.

Trump parts with TV ad maker as firm’s partner goes to Haley

A Jamestown representative did not respond to a request for comment, nor did spokespeople for Haley. But those familiar with the discussions said that Barney Keller, the consulting firm’s president, had signed on with Haley. Keller arranged to work for Haley independently of Jamestown, staying firewalled off from the rest of the firm during the campaign.

But the Trump campaign was not willing to participate in the arrangement.

The prominent GOP media firm has been in Trump’s orbit since 2016, when it began crafting commercials for the former president’s first campaign. Two Jamestown partners, Larry Weitzner and Jason Miller, were key architects of Trump’s advertising strategy, and Miller joined the campaign as a top adviser.

The Trump-Jamestown partnership carried over to the 2020 election, when the firm cut a series of ads for the reelection campaign, including a pair that aired during the Super Bowl.

Jamestown continued to work for Trump after his unsuccessful reelection bid. And Trump’s 2024 campaign paid the firm more than $30,000 in December to produce videos of the former president speaking direct-to-camera.

Jamestown has a long history in Republican politics, working for candidates across the country and up and down the ballot. The firm worked for a number of GOP candidates during the 2022 midterm election, including Pennsylvania Senate candidate Mehmet Oz, New Hampshire congressional hopeful Matt Mowers and New Jersey Rep. Tom Kean Jr.

Trump has begun filling out his campaign team with top adividers, including Republican operatives Brian Jack, Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles. Last week, the Trump campaign also announced that Miller, who left Jamestown in 2017, would be joining the effort.

It remains unclear who will be replacing Jamestown in producing Trump’s 2024 ads.

  • Drone maker offers to sell 2 Reapers to Ukraine for $1

Drone maker offers to sell 2 Reapers to Ukraine for $1

    [ad_1]

The Ukrainian government had recently renewed its push for the drones, which can fly farther than 1,100 miles while carrying laser-guided munitions and advanced optics for long-range surveillance.

Despite General Atomics’ offer to transfer the two drones, “there are limits to what an American defense company can do to support a situation such as this,” CEO Linden Blue said in a statement. “From our perspective, it is long past time to enable Ukrainian forces with the information dominance required to win this war.”

Blue indicated some frustration with the refusal of the U.S. to greenlight sending the drones, which POLITICO had previously reported had already won approval from the Air Force.

“We have offered to train Ukrainian operators on these systems at no cost to U.S. taxpayers or the Ukrainian government,” Blue continued. “We have offered flexible options and recommendations for delivery. We have discussed the situation endlessly at every level of the U.S. federal government, and with many international partners.”

A spokesperson at the Pentagon did not immediately return a request for comment.

The Air Force first floated the idea of transferring some of its repairs about a month after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and there have been some discussions over sending the Army’s version, the Gray Eagle, as well.

The Air Force has been trying to scrap older versions of its Reaper fleet for years in order to redirect money to buy and operate more cutting-edge technology, but Congress has rejected the proposal each time.

The Air Force is already operating the aircraft in Europe. Last year, the Air Force began flying Reaper missions from Romania.

A person familiar with the negotiations said Ukraine had offered to share the intelligence it gathered from Reaper flights with the U.S., as well as any battle damage assessments after strikes, to no avail.
