Cold storage units maintain supply-demand chain, prove beneficial for fruit growers in Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 25: The cold units most of whom are in Lassipora area of Pulwama have proven very beneficial for fruits growers as it has provided them a choice to sell their produce as per their will besides maintaining chain of supply and demand.
Experts while talking to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that apples kept in cold storage in Kashmir are sold at better prices, as the growers see it fit on demand.
However, during harvesting season, farmers are pumping tons of apples into cold storage units across the valley, but the already set up cold storage units didn’t meet the demand, which suggests that the valley needs more cold storage units.
Azhar Anjum, Manager of one of the cold storage units, said that cold storage units have come in handy for Kashmiri apple growers who witnessed a very low demand for the fruit despite bumper crops last season.
He said that cold storage units are very beneficial as it increases the shelf life of apples by 6-8 months and helps in maintaining the chain of supply and demand.
He said the cold storages have “revolutionised” the horticulture sector as it gives a choice to a grower to sell his produce “as per will”.
Though the number of cold storage units is still very less and can store just little produce but main thing growers need to do is to focus on smart packing and grading, he said.

“Our apples are the most delicious in the world but we are still using traditional ways of packing and grading due to which customers are preferring the apples from other countries that are packed smartly,” he said. “We have been still using hay and other things in packing and using high quality apples in upper layers while low quality and less shining apples in lower layers are creating problems for all.”
He said: “We need to learn to pack apples in small boxes or trays in a smart way that can be given as gifts on functions as well.. If we are able to do so we can easily compete with apples from other countries and earn a livelihood as well.”
Shahid Ahmad, an assistant manager of another cold storage unit at SIDCO Lassipora in Pulwama said that cold storages were running full and they did not have capacity to accommodate more growers.
He said that their unit has a capacity to store three lakh apple boxes and around 40 percent of the produce is still here.
Some growers have sent their produce to markets where it fetches about Rs 1200-1300 per box compared to Rs 300-500 in 2022 autumn of 2022.
He also said that growers need to focus on grading and packing more in every season then and only then Kashmiri apples will easily compete with fruit from other countries.
People associated with the apple industry say that introduction of cold storages has revolutionised the industry besides providing jobs to hundreds of labourers.
Kashmir on average produces over 20 lakh metric tonnes of apple every year, a figure that in some years touches 25 lakh metric tonnes.
The 2017 economic survey in J&K said that half of Kashmir’s population is directly or indirectly dependent on the apple industry and over 3.5 lakh hectares are under apple cultivation—(KNO)

Identify cyber hotspots, maintain data profile of cyber crimes: Parliamentary Panel

New Delhi: A parliamentary panel has recommended that the Union Home Ministry may encourage the state governments to identify cyber hotspots in their state and maintain a data profile on the cyber crimes being committed in those hotspots.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs headed by BJP MP Brijlal noted that it believed that despite the boom in Internet connectivity in the country, there might be a sizeable population in various states and Union Territories which may have very limited access to it due to various reasons.
“The committee recommends that the ministry may encourage state governments to identify cyber hotspots in their state and maintain data profile on the cyber crimes being committed in those hotspots and the measures taken to contain those crimes,” the panel said in its report submitted to Parliament on Friday.
This data, the panel said, may be collected by the ‘Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C)’ and shared with other states for framing of policies by them to tackle such types of cyber crimes.
The committee, therefore, recommended that the police force may adopt various strategies such as publicising its achievements in the meetings of the community, village, and district-level committees at regular intervals for increasing the police-people interaction, organising awareness weeks and Jan Sabhas, among others.
The focus should be on a nationwide capacity-building campaign, with an emphasis on developing and inculcating high professional and ethical standards as well as attitudinal and social skills in the personnel, it noted.
?The committee noted that states and Union Territories have been requested to install IP cameras at strategic locations in all police stations and to conduct a periodic audit of all the installed CCTVs.
The committee further notes that the Ministry of Law and Justice has been approached to advise states and Union Territories for installing CCTVs at district courts. The panel said that it would like to be apprised of the status of action taken by the states and Union Territories in this matter.

UNIFIL calls on Lebanon, Israel to maintain calm on border

Beirut: The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon has urged the country and Israel to maintain calm following an incident on the demarcation Blue Line, the National News Agency reported.
Earlier on Sunday, the Lebanese Army Command said an “Israeli enemy patrol breached” at noon the Blue Line near Lebanon’s southern town of Ayta al-Shaab by about one metre, prompting a Lebanese Army patrol to force them to retreat back to areas beyond the line.
“UNIFIL is aware of the tensions that are occurring along the Blue Line in the Aita (Ayta) al-Shaab area, where some Israeli maintenance work is taking place,” said Candice Ardell, Deputy Director of the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon Media Office.
“UNIFIL forces are at the site, and are seeking to reduce tension … We urge all parties and all those present at the scene to maintain calm,” she added.
The Blue Line separates the territories between Lebanon and Israel and was drawn in June 2000 by the United Nations after the Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon on May 25, 2000, Xinhua news agency reported.
UNIFIL forces are deployed in southern Lebanon, and its area of operations is defined by the Litani river in the north and the Blue Line in the south, according to the UN mission’s webpage.

Indian banks to issue bonds to maintain capital levels: CARE Ratings

Chennai: With credit off-take increasing, Indian banks are expected to issue bonds to maintain their capital levels and support their advances while cost of funds — deposits and borrowings are likely to increase, said CARE Ratings.
“To support credit-off take, banks are expected to shore up their liability franchise by raising capital (AT1 bonds, other debt instruments such as infrastructure bonds) and deposits. The market has been facing lower liquidity and elevated inflation, hence borrowing costs for deposits and the cost of raising capital are expected to increase,” the credit rating agency said in a report.
The banks are increasing their interest rates for deposits and plans for bonds issue. Further, profitability is also expected to support the capital base of the banks. Overall, the scheduled commercial banks (SCB) are expected to remain adequately capitalised in the near term.
All SCBs have maintained their Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) greater than the minimum required level for Q3FY23. The median CAR and Common Equity Tier 1 (CET-1) ratio of SCBs witnessed a rise in Q3FY23 over Q3FY22 and Q3FY21, the report notes.
According to CARE Ratings, the net profit of SCBs grew by 45 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) to Rs 0.65 lakh crore in Q3FY23 driven by a higher pre-provisioning operating profit (PPOP) growth compared to a lower growth in provisions.
The net interest income growth and stability in non-interest income helped PPOP to grow by 28.5 per cent y-o-y to Rs 1.30 lakh crore in Q3Y23. Meanwhile, provisions rose by 9.1 per cent to Rs 0.38 lakh crore.
Public sector banks’ net profit rose by 64.3 per cent y-o-y to Rs 0.29 lakh crore in Q3FY23, meanwhile private sector banks’ grew by 32.2 per cent y-o-y to reach Rs 0.35 lakh crore in Q3FY23, the report added.
Return on Assets of SCBs improved by 28 bps y-o-y to 1.23 per cent. At present, banks are in a better position after navigating the Covid period and managing mounted NPAs.

Healthy credit growth, improvement in asset quality, and lower growth in provisions due to lower incremental slippages and reduction in restructuring books are expected to generate healthy net profit growth.

Mehrauli demolition: HC directs authorities to maintain status quo on properties

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court Tuesday directed the authorities to maintain status quo till February 16 on various properties in the Mehrauli Archaeological Park area in the national capital which have been identified to be demolished as part of an anti-encroachment drive.
The high court also asked the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to state its stand on a batch of petitions challenging the demolition action and seeking a bar on demolition in the Mehrauli Archaeological Park area in south Delhi till a fresh “demarcation report” has been prepared.
A large number of petitions on the issue were listed for hearing before two different judges Justice Mini Pushkarna and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora.
Nearly 20 multi-storey buildings, a large number of shops and houses and a private school building are among the structures constructed “illegally” over the last few decades in the Mehrauli Archaeological Park, which the authorities have identified as part of the anti-encroachment drive.
Without interfering with the demolition exercise at this stage, Justice Pushkarna issued notice to the Delhi government and DDA on the petition by Mehrauli Minorities Resident And Shop Owners Welfare and directed that the matter be placed before the division bench headed by the Chief Justice, where a similar matter is already pending.
The drive, which began on February 10, comes a month ahead of a proposed G20 meeting at the park in south Delhi. According to the DDA, the old park has about 55 monuments under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India, state archeological department and the urban civic body.
The petitioner, who was raising the issue of demarcation report, submitted that Mehrauli has many slum clusters and several waqf properties, including mosques and dargahs, were located there.
He alleged the revenue minister of the Delhi government said on February 11 that a fresh “demarcation report” should be prepared as the present report has “certain objections” and, in the meantime, no demolition exercise should be carried out.

The DDA counsel said it is the land owning agency in the present case and the demolition exercise is in terms of the order passed by a division bench of the high court in December last year for removal of encroachments.
The lawyer contended the demarcation report is of the year 2021 and the minister cannot sit in review over it.
In the batch of pleas before Justice Arora, the court also directed the petitioners and their lawyers to meet DDA’s Deputy Director of Land Management at his office tomorrow at 3.30 PM to present their claims on respective land parcels.
It asked the DDA to file a demarcation report with respect to the subject properties by Wednesday afternoon.
Advocate Kamlesh Kumar Mishra, representing the residents of Green Apartments in Mehrauli, said there are 62 families residing in 62 flats and the entire action of the DDA is illegal because the authorities are going ahead with the drive without giving any opportunity to the residents to be heard.
He said the residents of the apartments have got their title deeds registered by the registrar and the DDA along with the Delhi government has gone ahead with the demarcation exercise without notifying the people residing there, something which is not allowed under law.
On February 10, the high court had directed the authorities to maintain status quo on 400 jhuggis of Ghosiya Slum Colony in Mehrauli, which were also to be demolished.
The land on which the alleged encroachment was made belonged to multiple agencies including the DDA, Waqf Board, and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), it has been claimed.
According to the demolition notice, the land on which demolition is being carried out is a part of the Mehrauli Archaeological Park and the ‘existing unauthorised encroachment’ is acting as a hindrance to its development.
On December 23, 2022, the high court had refused to stay the demolition exercise proposed in Mehrauli Archaeological Park.
The DDA had then informed the court that no mosque or graveyard was being demolished by the authorities and that only the encroachers will be removed from places in and around the park. It said the exercise will be carried out in accordance with the demarcation report.

‘Finland must triple immigration to maintain labour force’

Helsinki: Finland needs net immigration of up to 44,000 people annually to stabilize the size of the country’s labor force, a report has said.
The report published by the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy (Etla) on Friday examined the economic effects of work-based immigration, and how immigration can compensate for the effects of Finland’s aging population, Xinhua news agency reported.
Etla said that the level of immigration required to boost the workforce is almost three times the actual level predicted by Statistics Finland: around 15,000 people annually.
Finland’s working-age population began to decline at the turn of the 2010s, when the “baby boomer” generation moved into retirement.
If the current low birth rate and the level of immigration forecast by Statistics Finland continue, the working-age population will drop by nearly 20 percent by 2070.
Such a decrease in the labour force would result in a slowdown in the growth of the national economy, and affect the sustainability of the welfare state, Etla warned.
“There is a lot of room for increasing the employment rate in Finland, but it is by no means enough to cover the future need for labour,” said Tarmo Valkonen, research advisor at Etla.
According to Etla’s model calculations, with the required level of immigration the labour input would increase by almost 10 per cent by 2040, and approximately 40 per cent by 2070.

Although the report points out that the impact of immigrants with low levels of education on the public economy is less positive than that of highly-educated people, low-skilled immigration is still beneficial to Finland’s economy since it enables services to function and the general population to target better jobs that match their education.
“As life expectancy rises, additional immigration would still not be enough to stop the population aging,” Etla added.

Hyderabad: Police to maintain high security at new Secretariat

Hyderabad: The state police will provide high security to the new Telangana Secretariat Building that is likely to be inaugurated on February 17.
Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari discussed the security arrangements relating to the Dr B R Ambedkar Secretariat Complex on Tuesday.
Three companies of Telangana Special Police and 300 city police personnel will take care of the security of the Secretariat building. In all 22 personnel from traffic police have been allotted for the purpose. The security equipment like baggage scanners, vehicle scanners, body scanners will be put to use.
The authorities set up six sentry posts have been set up around the Secretariat. In all 300 CCTV cameras have been installed to oversee the security arrangements.
A special command control room has been set up to oversee the security arrangements. Monitoring of visitors will be done through Special identity cards. Two fire Engines with 34 staff along with fire safety arrangements in Secretariat building have been made. Special arrangements have been made for physically challenged people. Visitors will be allowed in all floors except the sixth floor.
During the meeting Telangana DGP Anjani Kumar, special chief secretary (MAUD) Arvind Kumar, Principal Secretary IT Jayesh Ranjan, R and B Secretary Srinivas Raju, CP CV Anand, SPF DG Umesh Sharaf, Additional DG Sanjay Kumar Jain, Director General of Fire Services Nagi Reddy, Additional DGP Intelligence Anil Kumar, and others attended the meeting.
The Secretariat complex which is spread over 28 acres has a built up area of 9.42 lakh sft Parking arrangements has provision to park 560 cars and more than 900 two wheelers.

Jordan’s king calls for efforts to maintain peace at Al-Aqsa Mosque compound

Amman: King Abdullah II of Jordan stressed the need to maintain calm and cease all acts of violence to pave the way for the Middle East peace process.
At a meeting in Amman with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, the king stressed the importance of respecting the historical and legal status quo in Al-Aqsa Mosque compound to maintain peace, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement by the Jordanian Royal Hashemite Court.
The king stressed Jordan’s steadfast position in supporting the two-state solution, which guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 border, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living side by side with Israel in peace.
In a statement issued by Netanyahu’s office, the two leaders discussed regional issues and “especially strategic, security and economic cooperation between Israel and Jordan, which contributes to regional stability”.
The two leaders also praised “the long-standing friendship and partnership” between Israel and Jordan, the office said.
Jordan was the second Arab nation to normalize relations with Israel, but tensions have increased between the two countries since the inauguration of the Israeli right-wing coalition government in December 2022.
