Maha Cong tussle: HK Patil meets Thorat, says all issues will be resolved amicably

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Congress’ Maharashtra in charge HK Patil on Sunday said there was no question of accepting the resignation of Balasaheb Thorat as legislature party leader and asserted all misunderstandings will be resolved amicably.

Thorat had last week resigned as CLP leader after criticising Maharashtra unit chief Nana Patole’s style of functioning.

Talking to reporters after meeting Thorat, Patil said the former will attend the All India Congress Committee plenary at Raipur in Chhattisgarh on February 24 and will meet party president Mallikarjun Kharge and AICC general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal.

Patil said he had conveyed to Kharge and Venugopal about the “hurt feelings” of Thorat and the recent developments in the state unit of the party.

“I apprised them about the development’s and hurt feelings. The Congress is a family and such issues crop up. We will resolve them among ourselves,” Patil said.

He also said such infighting will not hurt the party as “things are good and will improve”.

“There is no question of accepting Thorat ‘s resignation as CLP leader. I requested him to attend the plenary session, which he has accepted,” Patil said, adding the Maharashtra Legislative Council poll setback for the party involving Satyajit Tambe was not discussed.

The Congress was left high and dry after its official candidate for the Nashik division graduates seat Sudhir Tambe refused to contest and got his son Satyajit Tambe to stand successfully as an independent.

After his win, Satyajit Tambe had accused Patole of defaming his family and conspiring to deny him an opportunity to contest the MLC polls.

The Tambes are kin of Thorat, whose silence during the campaign to the MLC polls as he was recuperating from a shoulder injury, was misinterpreted as silent support by some segments of the party.

On the friction since the MLC polls, Patil said, “There has been no dialogue between Thorat and Patole. But it will happen.”

Thorat, who is recuperating from a shoulder injury, refused to divulge details of his meeting with Patil saying it was an internal matter of the Congress.

“There is no need for the media to blow things out of proportion. I will go to Raipur (for the plenary). All issues raised by me in the meeting with Patil were about strengthening the party,” Thorat said.

Queried on whether he would continue as CLP leader. Thorat said it was an internal matter of the Congress.

  • Maha orders SIT probe into scribe’s ‘killing’, Congress demands judicial probe

Maha orders SIT probe into scribe’s ‘killing’, Congress demands judicial probe

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Under flak from various quarters for the “killing” of a Ratnagiri journalist Shashikant Warishe, the Maharashtra government will on Saturday set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who holds the home portfolio, ordered the police to form the SIT and investigate Warishe’s killing even as the Opposition Congress demanded a judicial probe panel.

Fadnavis has directed the police department to set up the SIT headed by a senior officer and conduct the investigations into the case which has grabbed national attention.

On the other hand, Congress Chief Spokesperson Atul Londhe has sought an inquiry commission headed by a sitting or retired Bombay High Court judge to carry out the case probe, plus the report must be handed over to the court and not the state government.

“It must be noted that Fadnavis had in the past declared that the Barsu refinery complex (originally due to come up at Nanar) will come up no matter what and nothing can stop it…” Londhe pointed out, demanding the judicial probe to ascertain Warishe’s killing and a possible conspiracy behind it.

On Monday, Warishe, 46, was knocked down and dragged on his bike by a SUV allegedly driven by a local realty agent, Pandharinath Amberkar, 42.

While the scribe succumbed to his serious injuries on Tuesday, following a massive hue and cry, Ambedkar was arrested and charged with murder, as the incident reverberated nationally.

Major media organisations, rights and social groups, NGOs, and almost all major political parties like Congress, Nationalist Congress Party, Shiv Sena (UBT), CPI, and others have rallied together to condemn Warishe’ killing, and unravel the plot behind it.

Warishe had run a series of articles opposing the Barsu refinery-cum-petrochemicals complex – billed as the world’s biggest – coming up at a cost of Rs 3.50 lakh-crore, with foreign collaboration in Ratnagiri.

Earlier, following protests by locals, the erstwhile Maha Vikas Aghadi government had scrapped the Nanar location and the next regime has finalised Barsu as its new location, which is also facing huge opposition.

Warishe had been running a campaign against the upcoming refinery and petrochemicals complex coming up in the region, while Amberkar was a supporter of the mega-project.

Journalists and other organisations took out silent protest marches in Mumbai on Friday and in Rajapur on Saturday demanding justice for Warishe’s family and ensuring stringent punishment to the prime accused Amberkar.

  • PFI wanted to turn India into Islamic state by 2047: Maha ATS

PFI wanted to turn India into Islamic state by 2047: Maha ATS

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad has claimed the Popular Front of India (PFI), banned by the Centre last year, aimed to establish the “rule of Islam” in India by 2047, and also had plans to obtain weapons and ammunition with the help of foreign countries or other organisations to achieve their targets.

The ATS stated this in its chargesheet filed in a local court last week against five PFI members who were arrested last year for allegedly indulging in unlawful activities and waging a war against the country.

The state ATS arrested the five PFI members – Mazhar Khan, Sadiq Shaikh, Mohammad Iqbal Khan, Momin Mistry and Aasif Hussain Khan – following raids my multiple agencies across various states in September last year.

The accused have been charged under Indian Penal Code sections for promoting enmity between different groups and conspiring to commit certain offences against the state, as well as provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

In the chargesheet filed on February 2, the ATS claimed to have seized a document called “India 2047- towards rule of Islam in India”.

The seized document, as per the ATS, provides a roadmap for members of the group (PFI) to “overturn the government”.

“We dream a 2047, where the political power has returned to the Muslim community from whom it was unjustly taken away by the British Raj. The roadmap towards this first starts with the socio-economic development of Muslim community for which a separate roadmap was already provided in the name of Empower India Foundation,” the document said, as per the chargesheet.

“For this one needs to repeatedly remind the Muslim community of its grievances and establish grievances where there is none. All our frontal organisations including the party should be focused on expanding and recruiting new members,” the document stated.
The chargesheet said the PFI wanted to create a split among several communities by projecting the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as an organisation interested only in the welfare of upper caste Hindus.

The accused had held several training courses in order to achieve their targets, the ATS said.

The chargesheet also claimed another document was found from the devices of the accused, Iqbal, which gave details of their plans for expansion in Maharashtra.

In the said document, names of all the five accused were mentioned as members who were scheduled to take “final class”, the chargesheet stated.

The organisation (PFI) had plans to obtain weapons and ammunition with the help of foreign countries or other organisations to achieve their targets, the ATS claimed.

The Centre in September 2022 banned the PFI and several of its associates for five years under a stringent anti-terror law, accusing them of having “links” with global terror groups like ISIS and trying to spread communal hatred in the country.

Before the ban, the National Investigating Agency (NIA), the Enforcement Directorate(ED) and various state police forces had carried out raids in a massive pan-India crackdown on the PFI and arrested several of its leaders and activists from various states for allegedly supporting terror activities in the country.

  • Maha: Shinde minister challenges Sanjay Raut to resign from RS and get re-elected

Maha: Shinde minister challenges Sanjay Raut to resign from RS and get re-elected

    [ad_1]

Thane: Thane Guardian Minister Shambhuraj Desai on Wednesday challenged Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut to resign from Rajya Sabha and get re-elected, claiming that the legislators of the undivided Sena had voted for him then.

Desai was talking to the media here after attending a district planning committee meeting here.

His comments come amid a bitter exchange between the Sena’s two factions after ex-minister Aadtiya Thackeray dared Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to contest against him from Worli in Mumbai.

Desai said all Sena MLAs had followed party chief Uddhav Thackeray’s diktat to back Raut, now a fierce critic of the Shinde faction.

“He had given us specific instructions on the voting for the MP elections which we meticulously followed. Let him (Raut) resign now and win the elections to the Rajya Sabha,” said Desai.

The Sena split after a rebellion by Shinde, who joined hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party to become the CM. He now leads the Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena (BSS), while Uddhav Thackeray is the head of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray).

The BSS on Tuesday termed as “childish” Aaditya Thackeray’s comments challenging Shinde to contest from the Worli assembly seat.

On the tussle between the groups over the Sena’s name and symbol (bow and arrow), Desai, who belongs to BSS, said they will abide by the Election Commission’s decision.

Desai said he will meet the CM and try to get more funds for the Thane district. They have sought Rs 850 crore for the district in fiscal 2023-24, he said.

Model schools, which are a success in Sangli and Satara districts, will be replicated in Thane as well, he said.

Modular operation theatres will be set up in 10 government hospitals in the district, said the guardian minister.

Maha: MVA, others seek probe into scribe’s ‘murder’, decry lawlessness

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), Bombay Union of Journalists and Peoples Union for Civil Liberties have demanded a probe into the ‘murder’ of Ratnagiri journalist Shashikant Warishe — who succumbed after being knocked down by a vehicle under suspicious circumstances — here on Wednesday.

Warishe, a crusading scribe working for ‘Mahanagri Times’ publication, met with an “accident” late on Monday and succumbed on Tuesday morning, sparking a furore in state media circles.

He had been writing a series of articles campaigning against the proposed Ratnagiri Refinery and petrochemicals mega-complex coming up with foreign collaboration, at Barsu, near the original location of Nanar.

It is alleged that Warishe was run down by a speeding vehicle of one Pandharinath Amberkar, who is a strong supporter of the refinery complex, ostensibly to teach him a lesson.

Congress chief spokesperson Atul Londhe, Sena (UBT) national spokesperson Kishore Tiwari, BUJ’s Indra Kumar Jain and PUCL’s Mihir Desai and Lara Jesani have strongly condemned what they suspect is a ‘well-planned murder’ of the activist-journalist.

Londhe said that even since the government of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis came to power (in June 2022), attacks on the mediapersons doing their jobs are increasing in Maharashtra, undermining the independence of the fourth pillar of Democracy.

“The killing of a journalist like this is an atrocious attack on democracy and a blot on a progressive and tolerant state like Maharashtra. Law and order has deteriorated under the Shinde-Fadnavis regime. Ruling party MLAs fire guns openly, threaten to beat up people, assault officials, beat up principals, etc.,” said Londhe.

Tiwari said that it was indeed a grim scenario with the media being threatened in this manner with attacks for exposing the government or its policies and officials, and called for urgent steps from Fadnavis who holds the home portfolio.

Urgent for a speedy and fair probe, Desai and Jesani demanded compensation and security for Warishe’s family, and stopping all land acquisition work pertaining to the proposed refinery project till the locals’ views are taken into account.

Quoting local reports, Jain said that Warishe was dragged for over 100 metres under Amberkar’s vehicle before he fled the spot, leaving the journalist profusely bleeding on the Rajapur Highway.

“The incident came soon after Warishe had published Amberkar’s photos with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shinde and Fadnavis. Amberkar has been accused of land-grabbing and intimidating the locals or activists who are opposed to the refinery project,” said Jain.

On Tuesday, the All India Marathi Patrakar Sanghi, Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh, the Mantralay Ani Vidhimandal Vartahar Sangh urged the government to take immediate action in the matter and ensure the most stringent punishment for the guilty.

Media organisations have also submitted a memorandum to the state government condemning the incident and ensuring an impartial probe into the ‘heinous killing’ of Warishe.
