Osmanabad, Aurangabad renamed due to history, Maha govt tells HC

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government on Monday told Bombay High Court that Aurangabad and Osmanabad were renamed Sambhaji Nagar and Dharashiv, respectively, due to history and not for political reasons.

The government filed its affidavits in response to two public interest litigations challenging the decision to change the names of these cities. The petitions claimed the decision was politically motivated.

The government in its affidavits denied the name change was being effected for any such reason as alleged in the petitions.

“The state government has complied with all the necessary procedures involved in effecting change of name. The decision to change the name of Osmanabad to Dharashiv neither leads to any religious and communal hatred nor creates any rift between religious groups,” the state government said.

The affidavit said a majority of the people celebrated the name change.

The affidavit added that various records showed previously Osmanabad was known as Dharashiv.

“As per the story in Skand Puran, there was a devil in Dharashiv village namely Dharasur, who was killed by the goddess Saraswati. Due to this goddess Saraswati was known as Dharasur Mardini and the name of this village became Dharashiv. The village Dharashiv has been known as such from an ancient period,” the government’s affidavit said.

Justifying renaming Aurangabad as Sambhaji Nagar, the government said Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was a king reverently remembered for choosing his people and their beliefs and for sacrificing his life to protect the people.

During the hearing, a division bench of Acting Chief Justice SV Gangapurwala and Justice Sandeep Marne was informed by Advocate General Birendra Saraf that the notifications changing the name of the two cities had been issued.

Saraf said the government had now issued draft notification for renaming the districts and village revenue divisions, and it was now at the stage of receiving objections.

When the petitioners sought for a stay on that process, Saraf explained the objection procedure was going to take about eight weeks and that there would no movement towards final notification at least for this period.

The court then said it would hear the petitions next month.

The Maharashtra government had last year approved the name of Aurangabad as Sambhaji Nagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv.

On July 16, 2022, a Government Resolution was passed, which was forwarded to the Union government.

One petition filed by Aurangabad residents Mohammed Mushtaq Ahmed, Annasaheb Khandare and Rajesh More challenged the government’s decision to rename Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

Another PIL was filed by 17 residents of Osmanabad against the government’s decision to rename it as Dharashiv.

Both the petitions termed the government’s decision as “politically motivated”.

Maha: Farmers should be given Rs 10,000 per acre for investment, says KCR

    [ad_1]

Nanded: Telangana Chief Minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) chief K Chandrashekhar Rao on Sunday in Maharashtra said that State’s farmers should be given Rs 10,000 per acre for investment along with free electricity round the clock.

While addressing a gathering at Maharashtra’s Nanded, BRS supremo said, “farmers should be given Rs 10,000 per acre for investment along with 24 hours free electricity. In case of any unfortunate death of a farmer, he should be given insurance of Rs 5 lakhs. Like Telangana, govt should buy the produce of farmers by opening centres here too.”

Earlier on Thursday, CM KCR announced a compensation of Rs 10,000 per acre for farmers of Telangana, who lost their crops due to recent unseasonal rains and hailstorms.

He had also visited rain-affected areas in a few districts of the state and assured the farmers of financial assistance for cross losses.

CM KCR while addressing the Ramapuram village of Khammam district on Thursday, said, “Due to the rains, there was a loss of 2,28,250 acres of crops throughout the state. Out of this, maize crops suffered the maximum damage of 1,29,446 acres. As per the central government norms, they won’t get much money. In the Telangana government, along with putting in big investments and completing the pending and new projects, we are implementing farmer support schemes that are not there anywhere else in the world. With it, the farmers are also getting stable and coming out of their debts. Despite that, they are some fools who say that we won’t get anything from agriculture. Today Telangana is first in per capita income in the country. We have the highest per capita income, more than Maharashtra. In the GSDP growth rate, farming plays a vital role.”

“Farmers don’t have to feel bad about it as the government is with you”, he said assuring support to the farmers.

“After BRS was formed we have been saying that India requires a total integrated agricultural policy. For funds, we have to write a report to the Centre and we don’t know when they will give it. We don’t want to depend on the Centre as it takes six months to respond,” said the BRS chief.

  • PM Modi always targets the Gandhis. Why is he not disqualified, asks Maha Cong chief

PM Modi always targets the Gandhis. Why is he not disqualified, asks Maha Cong chief

    [ad_1]

Nagpur: In the wake of Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha following his conviction in a defamation case, Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole on Sunday asked why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not facing a similar action for constantly criticising Sonia Gandhi and late PM Rajiv Gandhi.

He said Rahul Gandhi was being punished for becoming the voice of the people, and added that his disqualification was against democratic values.

Members of the Nagpur District Congress Committee and party workers led by Patole, former Union minister Vilas Muttemwar and other leaders staged a day-long ‘Sankalp Satyagraha’ protest at the Sanvidhan square to show their solidarity with Rahul Gandhi.

“Democracy in the country is facing a big threat because of the Modi-led government’s autocratic rule. Rahul Gandhi had been constantly raising the issue of fugitive economic offenders Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi, who ran away with the country’s money. This is what the Opposition does and it is the duty of the government to reply,” Patole said in a press conference during the protest.

“The country’s prime minister constantly attacked the Gandhi family and their (BJP) ministers insulted former Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the Lok Sabha. They call Rahul Gandhi anti-national, forgetting that he is the grandson of a freedom fighter and son of a martyr. They are targeting members of a family who have sacrificed their lives and this fight is against this mindset of calling a nationalist an anti-national,” he alleged.

Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years in jail for calling Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi thieves, he claimed.

“I want to question why there is no action against PM Modi, who constantly attacks Sonia Gandhi and called Rajiv Gandhi ‘chor’ (thief)? Why is he not getting this kind of punishment?” he asked.

Rahul Gandhi was becoming the voice of people, and disqualifying him from the Lok Sabha was against the values of democracy and injustice to him, Patole said.

The Congress leader announced that a huge rally will be taken out on March 29 against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at various places across India.

Gandhi, representing Wayanad parliamentary constituency in Kerala, was on Friday disqualified from the Lok Sabha, a day after his conviction in a defamation case by a court in Surat in Gujarat.

The court sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail in the defamation case over his “Modi surname” remarks at a 2019 poll rally in Karnataka. However, the court also granted him bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal in a higher court.

BRS to contest all panchayat seats in Maha local body polls: KCR

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) chief K Chandrashekhar Rao on Sunday announced that the BRS will contest every panchayat in upcoming local body elections in Maharashtra.

The Telangana CM KCR at Kandhar Lohate, replying to the comments of deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis who asked KCR to take care of affairs in his state, the latter replied, “I am a citizen of India and I have work in every corner of the country.”

KCR said that the Telangana model for agriculture should be implemented across the country and farmers should be provided free power, financial assistance; free water all across the country, and insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh to farmers and all agricultural produce should be procured by the government.

“If Devendra Fadnavis gives an assurance, I will not come to Maharashtra. If you want to stop me from coming to Maharashtra, please do it. Otherwise, I will come again and again to Maharashtra and fight for the rights of the farmers,” said KCR said.

He further said that the Dalits and Adivasis in Maharashtra have been facing problems for several decades. “It is not a healthy sign for the country. In Telangana, we have good schemes for Dalit families by announcing a scheme wherein Rs 10 lakh is provided to each family to use the money and improve their living standards. Devendra Fadanvis ji, you implement the scheme in Maharashtra and I would not come here,” he reiterated.

KCR said that compared to other countries there is fertile soil in the country and there is an abundance of rain and farming friendly environment. Our population is 140 crores in the country. “When I came to Maharashtra I noticed the land here is barren. Isn’t there water? There is a lot of water but there is no proper channelization of water for agriculture and water flows down into the sea. There is no need for us to beg for water from any country. We need to ponder about why there is no water for farming and drinking.”

  • Rahul Gandhi must be punished for insulting V D Savarkar: Maha CM

Rahul Gandhi must be punished for insulting V D Savarkar: Maha CM

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday claimed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has insulted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the OBC community and Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar and should be “punished”.

Replying to a debate on the Opposition sponsored “Last Week” resolution in the Legislative Assembly, the chief minister said the law under which Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified as an MP was enacted by the Congress-led UPA government and the Modi government has implemented it.

“Rahul Gandhi has been convicted and stands automatically disqualified as a member of Lok Sabha. But he continues to insult V D Savarkar by saying that he is not Savarkar to apologise. Who does he think he is? He must be punished,” Shinde said.

Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as a Lok Sabha MP after a Surat court on Thursday sentenced him to two years in jail for criminal defamation over his 2019 “Modi surname” remark. The sentence is suspended for 30 days to allow Rahul to appeal in a higher court.

Shinde said Rahul Gandhi had insulted the OBC (Other Backward Classes) community by targeting the prime minister.

“Savarkar is a patriot. Why insult a patriotic person? Maharashtra will not tolerate the insult of PM Modi and Savarkar. People will not let him (Rahul Gandhi) move on the streets of Maharashtra,” he said.

Addressing a press conference in Delhi over his disqualification, Rahul Gandhi said that “My name is not Savarkar, my name is Gandhi and Gandhi does not offer an apology to anyone”.

Shinde took a dig at the Opposition, which comprises Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP, and Congress, for demanding the suspension of some legislators of the ruling alliance who had hit a poster of Rahul Gandhi with slippers on the stairs of the Maharashtra Legislature complex some days ago.

“As the Opposition doesn’t want to listen to the development work of our government, their members fled from the House,” the chief minister said referring to members of the Opposition staging a walkout earlier in the day.

Maha: Hindu bodies claim encroachment by dargah near temple

    [ad_1]

Nashik: A few Hindu organisations have demanded action claiming that a dargah adjacent to a famous Ganesh temple in Maharashtra’s Nashik city has encroached space.

While no complaint has been filed in this connection, Nashik civic chief said action will be taken if they come across any irregularities.

The dargah sits close to the Navshya Ganpati temple in the city’s Anandvalli area on Gangapur Road. The temple was built in 1774 by Raghoba Peshwa and his wife Anandibai. The dargah is also believed to be quite old.

Sudarshan News Channel editor Suresh Chavhanke, who also heads the Rashtra Nirman Sanstha, visited the temple on Thursday.

He was accompanied by members of his organisation as well as the Hindu Ekta Andolan Party who took a round of the premises.

“If anyone who supports Pakistan or any Muslim who gives trouble to Hindu religious places, Hindu girls and people, Hindu Rashtra Nirman Sanstha will stage an agitation against it. The authorities concerned should take action against this encroachment,” said Ramsingh Bawri, national president of the Hindu Ekta Andolan Party.

Nashik Municipal Corporation Commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar said no encroachment will be tolerated by the civic body.

“Action will be taken surely against any unauthorised construction domestic, commercial or religious. All unauthorised constructions and encroachments are equal before NMC. Officials will visit the site, conduct an inspection and action will be taken if there are any irregularities,” he said.
