    Earthquake of 4.5 magnitude strikes Indonesia

    Papua: A 4.5 magnitude earthquake hit near the north coast of Papua, Indonesia on Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

    The earthquake hit Papua, Indonesia at 10:43:51 (UTC) at a depth of 44.1 km.

    According to USGS, the latitude and longitude of the earthquake were found to be 1.594°S and 134.193°E respectively.

    Papua is Indonesia’s easternmost province. It encompasses the western half of New Guinea and several other islands. No injuries have been reported.

    Recently, at least four people were killed after a 5.1 magnitude quake shook the capital of Papua province in Indonesia, The Jakarta Post reported.

    “The 5.1-magnitude quake hit around 1.28 pm (0628 GMT) on land just southwest of Jayapura city at a depth of 22 kilometres,” the US Geological Survey said.

    Talking about the incident, Asep Khalid, head of the Jayapura Disaster Mitigation Agency, said in a press release that a cafe collapsed and fell into the sea, resulting in the death of four persons.

    The four victims had been to a cafe when the quake caused the building to collapse, said Asep said in a statement. The quake was felt strongly for two to three seconds, causing panic amongst residents, he added.

    Ankara: Three earthquakes rocked Turkey on Monday as the country is still assessing the number of casualties and the damage.

    The third earthquake of magnitude 6.0 on the Richter scale hit Goksun, Turkey on Monday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

    Goksun is a town and district of Kahramanmaras Province in Turkey’s Mediterranean region.

    The earthquake occurred at 3 pm local time and hit 5 km North East (NE) of Goksun, Turkey on Monday at a depth of 10 km, USGS stated.

    The earthquake’s epicenter was located at 38.061°N and 36.537°E, respectively.

    The recent earthquake is the third to hit Turkey on Monday.

    Earlier, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit Turkey just hours after a massive earthquake of magnitude 7.8 on the Richter scale hit 26 km East of Turkey’s Nurdagi on Monday.

    According to CNN, the deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit southern Turkey in the early hours of Monday has claimed more than 500 lives in nearby regions as well as Syria.

    At least 284 people have been killed and close to 2,300 injured in Turkey, the American broadcaster reported citing the country’s Vice President Fuat Oktay. According to Oktay, more than 1,700 buildings have been damaged across 10 Turkish cities.

    In Syria, at least 237 people were killed and 639 injured, Syrian state-run news agency SANA reported, citing a Health Ministry official.

    One of the largest earthquakes to hit Turkey in more than a century, it caused vibrations throughout the area, collapsed buildings, and forced people to flee into the streets.

    Condolences poured in from across the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and condoled the loss of life in the massive quake.

    Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Twitter that “search and rescue teams were immediately dispatched” to the areas hit by the quake.

    Moreover, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also tweeted and expressed grief over the loss of lives in the tragic earthquake that jolted both Turkey and Syria.

    “Deeply distressed by the loss of lives and damage in the earthquake in Turkiye,” he wrote on Twitter as he conveyed his support to his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu

    Imphal: An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 on the Richter scale hit Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Saturday morning, the National Centre of Seismology (NCS) said.

    According to National Center for Seismology, the earthquake occurred at 6.14am with a depth of 10 km. No casualties were reported.

    “Earthquake of Magnitude: 4.0, Occurred on 04-02-2023, 06:14:55 IST, Latitude: 25.13 & Longitude: 94.67, Depth: 10 km, location: Ukhrul, Manipur, India,” NCS said in a tweet.

    Earlier, a magnitude 3.2 struck parts of western Uttar Pradesh and Haryana on Friday night. With its epicenter in Shamli, the quake hit the region at 9.31pm, the nodal agency for monitoring earthquake activity in the country said.

    Tehran: At least three people were killed and 816 others injured after a 5.9 magnitude quake hit Iran’s Khoy city.

    The quake hit the region at 21.44 p.m. local time on Saturday and its depth was 7 km, the state media reported.

    Governor-general of West Azarbaijan province Mohammad Sadegh Motamadian said injured have been rushed to various hospitals, Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.

    Seventy villages were damaged in the quake, he added.
