Hokkaido, Japan’s second-largest island, witnessed an earthquake of 6.1 magnitude on the Richter scale on Saturday night, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The earthquake shook the coastal cities of Kushiro and Nemuro struck at 10:27 p.m. (6:57 pm IST) at a depth of around 43 kilometers (27 miles). No tsunami warnings were issued by the USGS.

According to Japanese media, no immediate reports of loss of life or property damage have been reported so far.

Earthquakes are very common in Japan. In 2004, the world’s deadliest tsunami rocked Japan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Maldives, and Thailand claiming 227,898 dead or missing and a damage of $227,898 million.

Because of experiencing frequent earthquakes, Japan has strict construction regulations enabling buildings to withstand strong earthquakes. The country also holds routine emergency drills to prepare for a major jolt.

Deadly New Quakes of 6.4 and 5.8 Magnitude Trap People Under Rubble- Details Here

Rescuers are once again searching for people trapped under rubble in Turkey after two new earthquakes hit the country, killing at least three people.

Tremors of 6.4 and 5.8 magnitude struck in the south-east near the border with Syria, where massive quakes devastated both countries on 6 February.

The earlier quakes killed 44,000 people in Turkey and Syria with tens of thousands more left homeless.

Buildings weakened by those tremors collapsed in both countries on Monday.

Turkey’s disaster and emergency agency says the 6.4 tremor occurred at 20:04 local time (17:04 GMT), followed by the 5.8 quake three minutes later.

The three deaths occurred in Antakya, Defne, and Samandag, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said, urging people not to enter potentially dangerous buildings.

Mr Soylu said 213 people had also been injured.

Reports from the city of Antakya spoke of fear and panic in the streets as ambulances and rescue crews tried to reach the worst affected areas where the walls of badly damaged buildings had collapsed.

“I thought the earth was going to split open under my feet,” local resident Muna al-Omar told Reuters news agency, crying as she held her seven-year-old son. She had been in a tent in a park in the city centre when the new earthquakes hit.

Ali Mazlum, 18, told AFP news agency he had been looking for the bodies of family members from the previous earthquakes when the latest tremors hit.

“You don’t know what to do… we grabbed each other and right in front of us, the walls started to fall,” he said.

In Syria, some 470 injured people are said to have visited hospitals after Monday’s quakes, which were also reportedly felt in Egypt and Lebanon.

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake at a depth of two km (1.2 miles) struck the Turkey-Syria border region on Monday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.

Monday’s earthquake report came a mere few hours after US Secretary of state Antony Blinken vowed to aid Turkey “for as long as it takes” after deadly earthquakes affected the country two weeks ago.

“Türkiye faces a long road ahead to support those rendered homeless, and to rebuild.  The UN secretary-general has put out a very important, urgent appeal for $1 billion for long-term assistance, and we’re committed to providing support,” Blinken said.

Two Reuters witnesses reported a strong quake and further damage to buildings in central Antakya which were already affected by two massive earthquakes on February 6. Turkish rescue teams are reportedly working on damage control.

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Turkey’s southern province of Kahramanmaras at 4:17 a.m. local time (0117 GMT) on February 6, followed by a magnitude 6.4 quake a few minutes later in the country’s southern province of Gaziantep and a magnitude 7.6 earthquake at 1:24 p.m. local time (1024 GMT) in the Kahramanmaras Province.
