HC rejects ‘love jihad’ claim, says interfaith relations can’t have religious angle by default

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: A relationship cannot be dubbed as a form of ‘love jihad’ just because the boy and the girl belong to different religions, the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court has said while granting pre-arrest bail to a Muslim woman and her family.

A division bench of Justices Vibha Kankanwadi and Abhay Waghwase in the order passed on February 26 granted anticipatory bail to the accused who were denied relief by a local court in Aurangabad.

The woman’s former lover had alleged she and her family forced him to convert to Islam and undergo circumcision.

The man’s lawyer, while opposing the pre-arrest bail applications of the woman and her family members, also argued that it was a case of `love jihad’.

‘Love jihad’ is a term used by Hindu right-wing organisations to claim, without evidence, that there is a widespread conspiracy to lure Hindu women and convert them to Islam through marriage.

Here, though, the accuser was a man.

The high court rejected the love jihad argument, pointing out that the man, in the First Information Report (FIR), had admitted he was in a relationship with the woman and did not end the relationship despite having several opportunities.

“Merely because the boy and girl are from different religions, it cannot have a religious angle. It can be a case of pure love for each other,” the court said.

“It appears that now the colour has been tried to be given of love jihad, but when love is accepted then there is less possibility of the person being trapped just for converting him into the other’s religion,” it added.

As per the prosecution case, the man and the woman were in a relationship since March 2018. The man belonged to a Scheduled Caste community, but did not disclose this to the woman.

Later, the woman began insisting he should convert to Islam and marry her, after which the man disclosed his caste identity to her parents. They did not object to his caste identity and convinced their daughter to accept it.

But the relations later turned sour, following which the man lodged a case against the woman and her family in December 2022.

The HC, while granting pre-arrest bail to the woman and her family, said the probe into the case was almost over and hence their custody would not be necessary.

  • CPAC is a Trump love fest — he needs it to be

CPAC is a Trump love fest — he needs it to be

    [ad_1]

Already there are signs that this year’s CPAC might be off to a rocky start. Some Republicans are predicting lower turnout, and at least two attendees said they were contacted this week about purchasing a $375 ticket to the marquee Ronald Reagan Dinner, headlined by Trump acolyte and former Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake.

Trump is hoping to lock up a straw poll of the 2024 Republican field again this year. His Saturday evening speech to a hall of adoring supporters — likely to span well over an hour — will cap off the four-day event. For Trump, being greeted by a sea of red hats and life-size cardboard cutouts will provide the visuals to prove he remains the leader of the conservative movement. This year’s CPAC isn’t designed for a wide field of potential presidential candidates to court voters — it’s Trump’s chance to position himself as inevitable.

His likely top rival in a GOP primary, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, is skipping CPAC along with other potential 2024 candidates and top Republican officials. Former Vice President Mike Pence and Sen. Tim Scott will gather with DeSantis and other GOP presidential hopefuls behind closed doors at The Breakers, a luxury Palm Beach resort, to address donors at a retreat hosted by the anti-tax group Club for Growth. Trump was not invited to attend.

Former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, the two other major declared presidential contenders, are the only candidates who will attend both gatherings.

CPAC was once the ground zero for grassroots Republican activists and would attract a broad spectrum of conservative leaders. But during the Trump years, it has effectively morphed into an arm of the MAGA movement, fully reflective of the populist, America First wing of the party. Among the panels at this year’s event are such Trump-themed sessions as “Finish the Wall, Build the Dome,” and “They Stole It From Us Legally,” in reference to the 2020 election.

CPAC’s pull on establishment Republicans appears to have waned not just because the organization has tied itself closely to Trump. The conservative group is also navigating a serious public relations crisis as its chair, Matt Schlapp, faces sexual assault allegations from a GOP campaign staffer. The alleged victim, a former employee of Herschel Walker’s Senate campaign, sued Schlapp and his wife Mercedes in January for nearly $10 million. The couple has denied wrongdoing.

It was CPAC that welcomed Trump back with open arms for his first public appearance in 2021 after he left the White House in disgrace following the Jan. 6 insurrection. But his ties to the gathering extend back to 2011. And four months before he announced his presidential bid in 2015, Trump tested his populist campaign message on the CPAC stage, telling the crowd of activists they were his “kind of people.” “I love you people … You are conservative, you work, you love the country. It’s very simple,” Trump said.

CPAC’s speakers this year include a host of Republican senators allied with Trump, including three who have already endorsed him for president: Sens. Tommy Tuberville, J.D. Vance, and Eric Schmitt. And notably, the only member of Republican leadership speaking at CPAC this year is Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, who was one of the first to endorse Trump’s 2024 run. Right-wing commentator Candace Owens, MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, and the former president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro are also listed as featured speakers.

A super PAC supporting Trump, MAGA Inc., is among CPAC’s exhibitors and will host a private reception Saturday ahead of Trump’s speech.

Other stars in the party have effectively conceded the event to the former president, choosing to skip out of this year’s festivities entirely. That includes the chair of the Republican National Committee, Ronna McDaniel, who a year ago called the energy at the conference “amazing” after taking the stage in Orlando. At the time, the RNC was a CPAC sponsor. The committee did not seek a sponsorship this year.

It’s unclear if McDaniel received an invitation to speak at this year’s CPAC — representatives for both camps did not immediately respond to a request for comment. At the RNC’s winter meeting in Dana Point, Calif. in January, Schlapp was scheduled to attend as the guest of a supporter of Harmeet Dhillon, McDaniel’s challenger in her reelection bid for chair. Schlapp ultimately did not attend the event, which took place soon after he was served with a lawsuit over the sexual assault allegations.

Also skipping out on this year’s CPAC is Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, another Republican considered a potential presidential candidate. Carney, who serves as a consultant to Abbott, said the governor is only participating in in-state events until the legislative session concludes in June. Abbott spoke at the start of CPAC’s August convention in Dallas.

And while a cast of Fox News stars have studded conservative conferences in recent months — Sean Hannity at CPAC Dallas in August, and both Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham at Turning Point USA’s year-end conference in Phoenix — none of those high-profile commentators are scheduled to appear this weekend. Nor is Fox Nation, the network’s digital streaming platform, listed as a sponsor this year, as it has been previously.

The Schlapps have notably been absent from Fox’s airwaves since the allegations surfaced. And in recent weeks, the couple has taken to right-wing news services like Newsmax and Steve Bannon’s “War Room” to drum up buzz about this year’s CPAC event.

CPAC’s annual presidential straw poll is guaranteed to receive media attention. The poll, done by a secret ballot, and the results of which are released at the end of the weekend, will ask conference attendees their preference in a mock 2024 presidential GOP primary. But without DeSantis, Pence, Scott or other potential 2024 hopefuls speaking at the event, it is unclear how indicative the poll will be of widespread Republican thinking.

“The straw poll is going to be a less accurate indication of where the grassroots are than in years past because DeSantis isn’t here, Trump is the only big name speaker who is going to be here,” said a Republican strategist who regularly attends CPAC. “You have to take the results with a grain of salt.”

We will continue teaching or bringing awareness to subjects such as Love Jihad, Narcotic Jihad and child abuse around Kerala whenever we are given permission. No SIO can stop us from doing so,” CASA Kasargod stated.

Telangana govt supporting ‘love jihad’: VHP, Bajrang Dal protest medico’s suicide

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Monday protested against Telangana Government over the death of Warangal PG medical student Dr. Preethi.

“The incompetent government’s rule is supporting rapes and love jihads. There have been many such incidents in the past and the actions of love-jihad extremists are increasing day by day with the government’s backing. Kakatiya Medical student D Preethi passed away at 9:10 PM on Sunday due to Saif. Bajrang dal condemns this incident,” said Bajrang Dal Telangana state convener Sivaramulu.

The effigy of the government was burnt at Koti Crossroads in the presence of Bajrang Dal. A protest was conducted in the Mahatma Gandhi University, Nalgonda by VHP’s Durga Vahini, the female wing.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Monday staged a protest at Kaktiya Medical College in Warangal.

Carrying ABVP flags and raising slogans, the protestors marched towards Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) but were stopped by the police at the main gate. The protestors had an argument with the policemen, triggering tension.

The ABVP men were demanding the suspension of KMC Principal Mohan Das and Head of the Department Nagarjuna Reddy.

26-year-old Preethi, a first-year student of the postgraduate (MD) in the department of Anaesthesia, attempted suicide on February 22 allegedly by taking a lethal injection while on duty at AMGM Hospital. She succumbed at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) on Sunday night.

The police have already arrested Preethi’s senior M. A. Saif, a second-year student in the department of Anaesthesia.

Police said targeted harassment of Preethi by her senior could have driven her to commit suicide.

Police booked Saif for abetment to suicide. He was also booked under the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and Anti-Ragging Act.

Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Sunday remarked that in the case of the Warangal Medico Preethi’s suicide, it is clearly visible that chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao is in support of ‘one community’.

Sanjay was indirectly referring to the dead victim’s senior MA Saif, who belongs to the Muslim community and is the main accused in the case. Sanjay in the past had also referred to the case as a clear case of ‘love jihad’.

Protests in Jamshedpur after ‘love jihad’ case surfaces

    [ad_1]

Jamshedpur: Protests were staged in the Kadma area of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand after an alleged case of ‘love jihad’ came to light on Thursday.

The demonstrators, also comprising Hindu outfits, sought “justice” for a 14-year-old minor Hindu girl who lodged a complaint against a Muslim man identified as Shabbir Khan.

The protesters who gathered outside the Kadma police station sought “strict action” against Khan.

The police have registered an FIR in the matter and have assured action.

The minor alleged that she had befriended Khan near her school a month ago, who had identified himself as ‘Sameer’.

Later, when their friendship eventually blossommed into a relationship and they got closer, Sameer, aged around 20, clicked several private pictures with her.

Things went wrong when she came to know that Sameer had concealed his real identity, and that he is a Muslim youth named Shabbir Khan.

She alleged that Khan also put pressure on her to marry him and when she refused, he threatened to make her private pictures and videos public.

The girl also claimed that Khan wanted her to adopt Islam.

  • Maha: No love jihadi shall remain alive, says Raja Singh at public rally

Maha: No love jihadi shall remain alive, says Raja Singh at public rally

    [ad_1]

Suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member and former Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh made a call for ‘Undivided Hindu Rashtra’ on the occasion of Shivaji Jayanthi in Maharashtra.

Addressing a huge public rally in Latur district on Sunday, Raja spoke about Love Jihad, Hindu Rashtra, and his recent arrest by the Telangana police.

He also mentioned Afzal Khan, a general who served the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur Sultanate during the 1600s, was killed by Chhatrapati Shivaji.

With Afzal as a reference, Singh made a provocative statement that said, “Jitne Afzal ke naajayaz awlaade hai, un sabko nahi chodna. Shivaji Maharaj ne Afzal ka seena phaadkar bagwaa rang lehraya tha. Aaj har gali mein, har vidhaan sabha mein ek Afzal hai. Tho socho hamein kitne Chhatrapati Maharaj ka roop lena hoga (Today, Afzal Khan’s descendants are found in every lane, every Vidhan Sabha. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj murdered Afzal Khan and raised the Hindu flag. Just think, how many of us have to become a Shivaji to murder an Afzal).”

He then spoke about love jihad provoking the crowd to murder every Muslim man who is in a relationship with a Hindu woman.  “Hamare Maharashtra ke dharthi per koi bhi love jihadi zinda na bache. Aaj hamari bahu-beti ko behla-phuslakar Love Jihad ke naam per fasaya jaa raha hai. Bacha paida karne ki machine banaya jaa raha hai. Rape and unke tukde kiya jaa raha hai. (No love jihadi will survive on the soil of Maharashtra. They trap Hindu women and make them slaves by producing more and more children. They rape them and cut them into pieces),” Raja said.

Hamare secular bhaiyon aur beheno ko batana chahatha hoon ki hum kabhi bhai-behen nahi ho sakthe. (I just want to convey to my secular brothers and sisters that we can never be brothers),” Raja spoke among energizing cheering among the crowd.

Singh went on to raise slogans such as ‘humse jo takrayega mitti mein mil jayega’ as the crowd cheered on.

Raja Singh also mentioned his recent bail and the restrictions imposed on him by the Telangana High Court and police.

Mujhe police ka notice diya gaya ki aapko kuch bhi nahi bolna hai. Maine kahan bilkul, hum kuch nahi bolenge. Lekin ithihaas kabhi jhuk nahi saktha aur Raja Singh kabhi rukh nahi saktha. Hamare dharam ke liye humne hamari kursi ko bhi laath maar di hai. Mera ek hee sankalp hai, jab tak jeeyoon, Chhatrapati Maharaj ke marg darshan per jeeyon. (I was told by the police not to say a word. I said ok. But history cannot be erased and Raja Singh cannot be tied down. I gave up my MLA position for my religion. I just want to live under the guidance of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj till my end.),” he said.

On August 23 last year, T Raja Singh was booked by the Telangana police under the PD Act (Preventive Detention Act) for making derogatory remarks against the Prophet Mohammed in a video posted by him.

His comments lead to scores of people protesting on the streets demanding his arrest. The Telangana unit of the BJP also disassociated itself from his statements.

He was granted bail in February by the Telangana High Court after spending 76 days in prison.

UP minister celebrates Valentine’s Day as cow love day’

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Animal Husbandry Minister Dharmpal Singh on Tuesday celebrated Valentine’s Day as “cow love day” by offering jaggery and rotis to cows and said that they should be treated as mothers.

He said there is no animal like a cow in the world whose “mal-mutra” (stool and urine) is “pious”.

“Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated all over the world. There are many relations like mother, father, brother, sister, husband, wife, and one’s love should be expressed,” Singh told reporters.

“We have three mothers — our mother, who gives us birth, ‘gau mata’ (cow) and Bharat Mata. First love should be for our mother, then ‘gau mata’ (cow) and then Bharat Mata ‘ko pranaam karna chahiye’ (should be saluted),” the minister said.

Singh offered gud’ (jaggery) and rotis to cows in the Bakshi ka Talab area here to mark the day.

He urged people to celebrate “cow love day” on Valentine’s Day.

“They (people) should go to a ‘gaushala’ (cow shelter home), feed roti to a cow and pray to her,” Singh said.

“Even a simple visit to ‘Gaushala’ can keep tension away as there is an emotional connect to it. By entering ‘Gaushala’ the door to development opens. There are no such animals (like cows) in the world whose ‘mal-mutra’ (stool-urine) is pious. Its dung and urine are also pious. In cow’s dung lives Lakshmi,” the minister added.

The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) had on last Monday appealed to the people to celebrate February 14 as ‘Cow Hug Day’. The directive was later withdrawn on the directions of the government after the move became the subject of memes on social media.

Singh had on Saturday appealed to people to celebrate February 12 by expressing love and faith towards cows by offering them gud and rotis.

Besides, people should seek blessings of cows by touching their head and neck, the minister had said.

“Gavo Vishwasya Matarah in vedas means the cow is the mother of the world. Therefore, on this day, one should resolve to serve the mother cow regularly,” he had said.

Singh also said cow dung should be used on the occasion of ‘Holika Dahan’ as it is environment-friendly and reduces air pollution.
