  • Delhi excise policy case: Govt’s loss of Rs 581 cr was diverted as profit to accused, says ED

Delhi excise policy case: Govt’s loss of Rs 581 cr was diverted as profit to accused, says ED

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate has claimed in its supplementary chargesheet filed in connection with the excise policy case that the Delhi government lost revenues of about Rs 581 crore by providing a margin of 12 per cent to private wholesalers (L1 licence holders).

This 12 per cent commission was given to them by not paying heed to the expert committee headed by IAS Ravi Dhawan, as per the chargesheet.

The ED claimed that the loss was diverted to ostentatious profits to the wholesalers, including accused M/s Indo Spirits which was used to recoup the kickbacks paid in advance by the ‘south group’.

“In order to create a device for continuous payment of kickbacks to Vijay Nair, an unheard of margin of 12 per cent was provided to the private wholesalers contrary to the recommendations of the expert committee headed by Ravi Dhawan, then excise commissioner, which suggested for a single government entity as wholesaler for Delhi.

“On this account, the government lost revenues of Rs 581 crore that would have accrued to it in case the expert committee recommendations were accepted by the government, which in the subject policy was assigned to private players, only to fill the personal coffers of AAP leaders,” the chargesheet read.

The ED has also claimed in the chargesheet that the ‘south group’ directly and indirectly controlled nine retail zones, which included five retail zones of Sarath Reddy.

In some cases, the control was via financing of the EMD (earnest money deposit) for the process, ostensible investments, relatives/dummies/proxies.

Apart from the direct profits accruing from the wholesale business of Indo Spirits, the modus operandi for recovering the kickback paid in advance by the ‘south group’, monies in the form of outstanding from the ostensible sales from the wholesale of Indo Spirits to retail of the ‘south group’ with an understanding that the outstanding was not to be recovered and the amount will be shown as recoverable in the books of account, the chargesheet said.

“Sarath Reddy’s controlled entities owed over Rs 60 crore to Indo Spirits, which is shown as outstanding but was not meant to be recovered as part of the conspiracy,” the ED claimed.

India condoles loss of lives in deadly Peshawar mosque blast

    [ad_1]

New Delhi [India], January 31 (ANI): India extended condolences to the families of the victims of the deadly terror attack that shook Peshawar in Pakistan on Monday.

So far, the toll of the dead stands at 90 with over 100 people injured, Geo News reported citing Radio Pakistan.

Taking to Twitter, MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi wrote, “India extends its deep condolences to the families of the victims of the terror attack in Peshawar yesterday. We strongly condemn this attack, which has taken the lives of so many people.”

The explosion took place in the central hall of the mosque on Monday at around 1 pm after a suicide bomber blew himself up. A rescue operation is being carried out to pull out bodies from the debris of the mosque, Geo News reported citing an official.

According to security officials, the suicide attacker was present in the front row during the prayers when he blew himself up. The outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Speaking to Geo News, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Peshawar Mohammad Aijaz Khan said that the explosion appears to be a suicide attack and the head of the suspected bomber has also been found at the site.

“It is possible that the attacker was already present in the Police Lines before the blast and that he may have used an official vehicle [to enter],” Geo News quoted Mohammad Aijaz Khan as saying.

“About 1,500 to 2,000 police officers visit the Police Lines daily,” he added.

Earlier, an eyewitness said there were at least 120 people at the mosque when the explosion took place. He said that the injured mostly included police personnel.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Caretaker Chief Minister Muhammad Azam Khan announced a day of mourning in the province on Tuesday after the attack, according to a Geo News report. He said that the national flag will be at half-mast in the province.

  • Frank Lampard vows to ‘dig in’ after Everton loss leaves him clinging to job

Frank Lampard vows to ‘dig in’ after Everton loss leaves him clinging to job

    [ad_1]

Frank Lampard vowed to “dig in” after a damaging defeat by West Ham in a crucial clash at the bottom of the table left Everton’s manager clinging to his job.

In a potentially significant development Everton’s majority shareholder, Farhad Moshiri, was at the London Stadium to watch Lampard’s side slip deeper into relegation trouble. Moshiri had not attended an Everton game since October 2021 and he could decide that it is time for a change of manager.

Asked about Lampard’s future after the game, Moshiri said that it is not his decision to make. It was later clarified that any move would be agreed with the rest of Everton’s board. Having stayed away from Goodison Park before last weekend’s defeat by Southampton, the rest of Everton’s directors joined Moshiri at the London Stadium.

They would have seen Everton’s fans hold up banners decrying “a board full of liars” and the team deliver another poor display. West Ham climbed out of the bottom three after two goals from Jarrod Bowen, potentially saving David Moyes from being fired, and left Everton in 19th place after a run of 11 defeats in 14 games in all competitions. It would come as little surprise if Lampard is fired.

Lampard, who hopes to improve his squad before the transfer window shuts, vowed to fight on after being asked about his future. “Those things are not my choice, it is my job to work, focus and keep my head down,” he said. “I know there’s things going on at the club but it’s never been a consequence for me whether a chairman or board member is at the game.

“I was at Chelsea for 18 months and the owner didn’t come to one competitive game. It’s not for me to guess what he thought about the game. We stayed up by the skin of our teeth last year and were five points shy of safety with not many games to go.

“I’ve said that we might stay where we are, and was questioned whether that is competitive enough talk. But if you are in a club where the club has moved downwards with serious investment, the conditions now are that we don’t have that investment and we are trying to rebuild. That doesn’t mean straight away you start climbing stairs. It means you have to dig in as a club and I’m prepared to dig in.”

Kenwright refused to discuss whether Lampard is at risk of being sacked. “It’s been a bad run of results for us all, and for Frank, but I would never say that to you,” he said. “We’ve just got to start winning, haven’t we?”

West Ham’s first league win since 24 October was a huge boost for Moyes, who has been backed by his board. “I think it’s a relief to the club itself,” West Ham’s manager said. “I really hope Everton stick with Frank. He is a top bloke but I have to think about my position because winning one game doesn’t mean everything is fine.”
