Tollywood actor Taraka Ratna loses battle for life after 23 days

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Tollywood actor Nandamuri Taraka Ratna on Saturday night breathed his last at Bengaluru’s Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences, where he was admitted on January 27 after he collapsed during a padyatra of TDP general secretary Nara Lokesh in Kuppam town of Andhra Pradesh. He was 39.

Taraka Ratna is survived by his wife Alekhya Reddy and a daughter.

Taraka Ratna was the grandson of TDP founder, legendary actor and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao. He was the cousin of Junior NTR, Kalyan Ram and Lokesh.

The body is likely to be brought to Hyderabad on Saturday night.

The young actor collapsed after he suffered a massive heart attack during Lokesh’s padyatra in Kuppam in Chittoor district. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Kuppam where he was given PCR. His heart had reportedly stopped functioning.

A few hours later, he was shifted to Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences in Bengaluru, where his condition remained critical. The management of the hospital had brought few cardiology specialists from the US.

He was reportedly treated with Balloon Angioplasty, Intra Balloon Pump and vasoactive support. His condition turned very critical on Friday and he finally succumbed on Saturday.

Taraka Ratna made his film debut in 2002 with ‘Okato Number Kurraadu’ under the direction of K. Raghavendra Rao. He acted in about a dozen movies and web series.

He was reportedly keen to contest next year’s Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh on TDP ticket and had joined Lokesh on the first day of padyatra.3

Taraka Ratna’s father Nandamuri Mohan Krishna is a cinematographer in Tollywood and son of N. T. Rama Rao.

Kari Lake loses appeal in Arizona governor race challenge

    [ad_1]

    election 2022 arizona governor 06038

The appeals court wrote Lake’s appeal failed because the evidence supports the conclusion that “voters were able to cast their ballots, that votes were counted correctly, and that no other basis justifies setting aside the election results.”

Shortly after the ruling, Lake tweeted: “I told you we would take this case all the way to the Arizona Supreme Court, and that’s exactly what we are going to do. Buckle up, America!”

Lake, who lost to Hobbs by just over 17,000 votes, was among the most vocal 2022 Republicans promoting former President Donald Trump’s election lies, which she made the centerpiece of her campaign. While most of the other election deniers around the country conceded after losing their races in November, Lake did not.

Lawyers for Lake focused on problems with ballot printers at some polling places in Maricopa County, home to more than 60% of the state’s voters. The defective printers produced ballots that were too light to be read by the on-site tabulators at polling places. Lines backed up in some areas amid the confusion.

County officials say everyone had a chance to vote and all ballots were counted since ballots affected by the printers were taken to more sophisticated counters at the elections department headquarters.

Lake’s attorneys also claim the chain of custody for ballots was broken at an off-site facility, where a contractor scans mail ballots to prepare them for processing. They claim workers at the facility put their own mail ballots into the pile, rather than returning them through normal channels, and also that paperwork documenting the transfer of ballots was missing. The county disputes the claim.

Hobbs’ attorneys said Lake was trying to sow distrust in Arizona’s election results and offered no proof to back up her allegations of election misconduct.

Lake faced extremely long odds in her challenge, needing to prove not only that misconduct occurred, but also that it was intended to deny her victory and did in fact result in the wrong woman being declared the winner. In her appeal, her lawyers argued a trial court judge applied the wrong standard of proof in deciding the case.

Hobbs took office as governor on Jan. 2.

Amid war of words between Adani Group and Hindenburg Research, India’s richest person Gautam Adani lost a spot on the world’s top ten billionaire list as his net worth dipped further on Tuesday.

The stocks of his group companies continued to fall even after detailed responses to the Hindenburg report.

In the report, the research firm raised concerns about shares of Adani group companies having a possibility of declining from their current levels, owing to high valuations.

Adani Group responds to Hindenburg report

On Sunday, Adani Group responded to allegations and narrative peddled by Hindenburg Research in a 400-page response.

It also raises questions about the ulterior motives and modus operandi of Hindenburg which has conveniently ignored the Indian judiciary and regulatory framework.

The group also alleged that the report by the research firm was not an attack on any specific company but a “calculated attack” on India, its growth story, and ambitions.

Replying to the claim that it is a ‘calculated attack’ on India, Hindenburg Research tweeted, ‘Fraud Cannot Be Obfuscated By Nationalism Or A Bloated Response That Ignores Every Key Allegation We Raised’.

Adani loses spot on world’s top ten billionaire list as net worth dipped

As per the index, Gautam Adani’s net worth dipped by over USD 39 billion in less than 15 days. His net worth was USD 124 billion on January 17 and currently, it is USD 84.4 billion. Due the dip, he lost spot on world’s top ten billionaire list.

Though he continued to be the richest person in India, the gap between him and RIL chairman Mukesh Ambani narrowed.

The current net worth of Ambani is USD 82.2 billion.

India’s richest person Gautam Adani lost a spot on the list of the world’s top five billionaires after his net worth dipped by USD 20.1 billion today.

On Friday, Adani group stocks continue to fall after Hindenburg Research said it fully stands by its report and believes any “legal action taken against us would be meritless”.

“Regarding the company’s threats of legal action, to be clear, we would welcome it. We fully stand by our report and believe any legal action taken against us would be meritless,” said Hindenburg Research in a statement that was posted on its official Twitter handle.

What did Hindenburg Research claim about the group?

Hindenburg Research report accused firms owned by Gautam Adani of market manipulation and accounting fraud.

Following the accusation, Adani Group said it is mulling legal options in the US and India against the investment research firm.

Jatin Jalundhwala, Group Head – Legal, Adani Group, in a statement, said, “The maliciously mischievous, unresearched report published by Hindenburg Research on 24 January 2023 has adversely affected the Adani Group, our shareholders and investors.”

  • Colorado baker loses appeal over transgender birthday cake

Colorado baker loses appeal over transgender birthday cake

    [ad_1]

supreme court wedding cake case 25958

Relying on the findings of a Denver judge in a 2021 trial in the dispute, the appeals court said Phillips’ shop initially agreed to make the cake but then refused after Scardina explained that she was going to use it to celebrate her transition from male to female.

“We conclude that creating a pink cake with blue frosting is not inherently expressive and any message or symbolism it provides to an observer would not be attributed to the baker,” said the court, which also rejected procedural arguments from Phillips.

Phillips, who is represented by Alliance Defending Freedom, maintains that the cakes he creates are a form of speech and plans to appeal.

“One need not agree with Jack’s views to agree that all Americans should be free to say what they believe, even if the government disagrees with those beliefs,” ADF senior counsel Jake Warner said in a statement.

John McHugh, one of the lawyers who represent Scardina, said the court looked carefully at all the arguments and evidence from the trial.

“They just object to the idea of Ms. Scardina wanting a birthday cake that reflects her status as a transgender woman because they object to the existence of transgender people,” he said of Phillips and his shop.

In 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission had acted with anti-religious bias in enforcing the anti-discrimination law against Phillips after he refused to bake a cake celebrating the wedding of Charlie Craig and Dave Mullins in 2012. The justices called the commission unfairly dismissive of Phillips’ religious beliefs.

The high court did not rule then on the larger issue of whether a business can invoke religious objections to refuse service to LGBTQ people, but it has another chance to do so.

Last year it heard another case challenging Colorado’s anti-discrimination law, brought by a Christian graphic artist who does not want to design wedding websites for same-sex couples. Lorie Smith, who is also represented by ADF, claims the law violates her freedom of speech.

Scardina, an attorney, attempted to order her cake on the same day in 2017 that the Supreme Court announced it would hear Phillips’ appeal in the wedding cake case. During trial, she testified that she wanted to “challenge the veracity” of Phillips’ statements that he would serve LGBTQ customers.

Before filing her lawsuit, Scardina first filed a complaint against Phillips with the state and the civil rights commission, which found probable cause that he had discriminated against her.

Phillips then filed a federal lawsuit against Colorado, accusing it of a “crusade to crush” him by pursuing the complaint.

In March 2019, lawyers for the state and Phillips agreed to drop both cases under a settlement Scardina was not involved in. She pursued the lawsuit against Phillips and Masterpiece on her own.

  • Hyderabad: Baby loses life to hospital negligence but goes scot-free

Hyderabad: Baby loses life to hospital negligence but goes scot-free

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: One of the most lucrative businesses is in the field of health management.  If you have money or the capacity to raise money open a hospital.  The caliber of the hospital is immaterial.  The owner can make claims about the specialty departments he has and run his or her business without fear of any action from the government.

Because the owner is hand in glove with the inspecting authorities who shut their eyes to areas that are of utmost importance for the lives of the patients.

We have come across with an incident that had a chilling effect on our spine.

A few weeks ago a pregnant woman was taken to a well-known hospital in Nanal Nagar.  The doctors taking care of the patient said that there appears no reason for any worry because the mother and baby inside the womb are in good health.

After a few hours of pains, the woman from the Old City gave birth to a male baby. But there came a shock.  The baby had a weak heart. He needed Level Three treatment. The doctors said the hospital does not have the facilities for that level of treatment.  They could treat up to Level One deficiency at the hospital.

Announcing this the doctors should have offered an alternative medical facility but they did not. The father said he was ready to pay for whatever expenses required.

But the hospital left the father to fend for himself.  He ran from pillar to post to make arrangements for an ambulance to take the baby to the hospital identified by the doctors. There were three ambulances parked in the hospital.  If the doctors had taken interest they could have immediately arranged an ambulance.  But they said it was the responsibility of the father to find the vehicle and take the baby.

When the father went to get the ambulance, he was shocked to know that none of the ambulances have a driver.

On making frantic phone calls and pleading with the management one of the drivers came in about half an hour.

The ambulance did not have the facility required to transport such a critical patient.  However, the patient was taken to a hospital in Banjara Hills area where the father was informed that he has brought a dead baby.

There was ruckus at the Nanal Nagar hospital when the baby’s lifeless body was taken back to that hospital.  Except for a shouting match between the management and the relatives of the baby nothing came off.

One other strange part of the story is that the baby’s father was made to pay Rs 63,000 before allowing the distraught mother to go home.

While the entire fault lies with the hospital and its management, the father cannot shirk his responsibility.  He did not report the case of utter negligence that time or later against the hospital. He could have gone to the police and also the medical department authorities.

The hospital is still running and maybe minting money daily.

When this writer spoke with the father, he said God had given his child only that much life.  He confessed that he was trying to recover from the tragedy but the condition of his wife still bad.

Is there a way to handle such cases?  Are there any organisations that would take cases of gross negligence and get such hospitals penalized?
