    Riyadh: Saudi national will no longer need to apply for a visa to enter Singapore, starting from Thursday, June 1.

    Singaporean embassy in Riyadh said on Twitter, citing a statement from the Singapore Immigration and Checkpoints Authority, “Saudi nationals with passports issued by the KSA will no longer need to apply for an entry visa to enter Singapore from June 1, 2023.”

    Except for holders of Saudi diplomatic passports, who are already exempt from Singapore visa requirements, all other Saudis must apply for a visa if they intend to enter Singapore before June 1.

    “There is strictly no refund of the visa processing fee for those who have already submitted or received the outcome of their entry visa applications,” the embassy added on Twitter.

    Biden’s remarks came during a four-day trip across Northern Ireland and Ireland designed to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the U.S.-brokered Good Friday Agreement. The visit also served as an opportunity for Biden to reconnect with his Irish roots.

    A proud Irish Catholic who frequently quotes Irish poets in his speeches and cites his heritage as a defining element of his life, Biden on Thursday called his speech to the nation’s parliament “one of the great honors of my career.”

    “You knew I’d be coming,” Biden told Irish lawmakers at the outset. “I only wish I could stay longer.”

    The 35-minute address was by turns optimistic and sentimental, peppered with asides about his Irish relatives as well as other Irish Americans he’d met. The Irish people are the “backbone of America’s progress,” Biden said.

    At one point, growing suddenly quiet, he mentioned his late son Beau, who he said was “the one who should be standing here giving this speech to you.”

    But Biden largely focused his remarks on the economic and diplomatic possibilities he envisioned in a continued U.S.-Ireland partnership between the U.S. and Ireland. He singled out the nation’s political and humanitarian support for Ukraine even as it remains militarily neutral.

    Ireland has been sharply critical of Moscow and offered extensive nonlethal aid to Ukraine, while taking in nearly 80,000 Ukrainian refugees — which Biden cited as an example of the continued strength of the global coalition opposing Russian President Vladimir Putin.

    “Putin thought the world would look the other way,” he said. “That’s what he thought. But he was wrong, he was wrong on every point.”

    Biden also addressed matters closer to home for the Irish, reiterating his support for strengthening the Good Friday pact that largely ended sectarian violence in Northern Ireland.

    “Peace is precious,” Biden warned those in attendance, which included former Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern and former Sinn Féin party leader Gerry Adams, two key figures in achieving the Good Friday accord. “It still needs its champions. It still needs to be nurtured.”

    He also urged the U.K. to work closer with Ireland in smoothing out ongoing trade issues related to Northern Ireland — following Britain’s 2021 exit from the European Union, it remains the only part of the U.K. still inside the EU’s single market for goods. Biden said there’s “more to be done” to reassure the region’s British unionists that this arrangement, which keeps trade flowing freely between the two parts of Ireland, won’t threaten their future in the U.K.

    Biden became the fourth U.S. president to address a joint session of the Irish parliament, a landmark event that followed separate meetings with Irish President Michael D. Higgins and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

    Varadkar earlier Thursday praised the U.S. support for Ukraine, telling reporters that “I never thought in my lifetime that we would see a war of this nature happen in Europe again.”

    “If it wasn’t for American leadership, and for America and Europe working together, I don’t know what kind of world we’d live in,” he added.

    In addition to the diplomatic meetings, Biden is using the trip to revisit his ancestral home for the first time since 2017. On Wednesday, he toured County Louth, the past home of his Finnegan descendants, including a stop at a 12th-century castle that he said was likely the last Irish landmark his great-great-grandfather saw before setting sail for America.

    Biden is slated to visit County Mayo on Friday, where his Blewitt ancestors hail from. He told the Irish parliament that those connections, and the way they shaped his upbringing, are “emblematic of the stories of so many Irish and American families.”

    “This is about defending the values handed down to us by our ancestors,” Biden said of the U.S.-Ireland alliance’s enduring importance. “This is a struggle we’re fit to fight together.”

    In a dig at Rahul Gandhi, he termed him the architect of his own misfortune.

    Asked if Rahul Gandhi was the reason that he was no longer part of the Congress, with which he had spent almost all his political career before leaving last year and floating his own party, Azad candidly agreed.

    He said that he had often raised the demand for holding elections to the CWC as well as block, district, and state-level units. These elections were held earlier, from the time of Indira Gandhi to P.V. Narasimha Rao.

    Azad, who had praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his book, said that he was impressed by how Modi had treated him despite all their political clashes. Citing his time as Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, he said that he had attacked the Prime Minister on various issues like the abrogation of Article 370, CAA, and the hijab issue, but Modi never resented it.

    On a possible linkup between his Democratic Azad Party and the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir, he avoided giving a direct anser, saying there were not permanent friends or enemies in politics.

    He said that he was not the leader of a regional party but always championed a national agenda.

    Hyderabad: Once upon a time the restaurants in the city, out of respect for those who fast in Ramzan, would help put up curtains to ensure that ‘rozedars‘ don’t get a look of people eating while they pass by.

    As time passed, however, the practice of putting curtains or screens to cover the view of the people eating inside restaurants during the fasting hours in Ramzan has waned away.

    Earlier, before Ramzan would begin, all restaurants and eateries would put up big cloth curtains. “Motive was to give a safe space to people who visit during fasting hours and eat sometime. Not all fast during Ramzan because of health-related issues, so such people would feel shy from visiting the hotel and eating. At home, one cannot expect families to cook food for one or two people,” said Syed Naseer of Al Madina Hotel, Falaknuma.

    The other reason for putting curtains or screens at restaurants was to avoid hurting the sentiments of the pious who fast during the holy month of Ramzan. “Generally, it was to respect the religious beliefs of those fasting during Ramzan. In Muslim localities, all hotels preferred to put curtains or screens in Ramzan. The practice now has gone over a period of time,” said Moin Khan, a hotel owner at Misrigunj.

    The practice of putting curtains was not restricted to any particular area or restaurant/hotel. “It was a uniform protocol. Sincerely adhered to by all hotel managements in Ramzan,” recalls Syed Mujeeb, an old-timer from Charminar. The curtain was removed after sunset when people break their fast for the day. The next morning the curtains would be put back.

    This is something also seen in Middle East countries, including Dubai, earlier. Three years ago the UAE government there announced it was no longer mandatory to put curtains or screens at the hotel.

    SRINAGAR: As the protests over hiring of a previously blacklisted company for conducting recruitment examinations gained momentum, the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB) chairman Rajesh Sharma on Friday assured the aspirants that there will be no compromise on transparency and merit.

    Calling the protests a malicious campaign to disrupt boards functioning, JKSSB chairman urged the aspirants to continue preparing for their exams and not to pay heed to the rumour mongers.

    “Board is very well aware of your concerns and we ensure you that there will be no compromise on transparency and merit. Focus on your studies and ignore these useless protests,” Sharma said while addressing a press conference at Jammu.

    He further said that the Aptech company is not blacklisted as of date, though it was blacklisted in 2019 for three years and that term expired in 2022, adding, “In accordance to the rules provided in General Financial Rules 2017 of GoI to deal with blacklisting the Aptech company has served its term,” Rajesh Sharma said.

    Adding further, Rajesh Sharma said that the agency is already conducting various important exams in other states of the country.

    “This agency is not permanently blacklisted for conducting exam. There is a difference between blacklisting and banning. These protests seem to be motivated to derail the functioning of the Board and deviate the hardworking candidates,” SSB chairman said.

    Assuring the aspirants that justice will be ensured and youth’s ability and merit will be respected, Sharma said, “Strict action will be taken against all those elements who are trying to harm the future of deserving aspirants,”

    He further added, “The matter of Aptech is still sub-judice and court will have a final say in this. The issue will be settled by law and not by sloganeering.”

    Maintaining that the board has taken major steps to ensure transparency and fairness in exams Sharma said, “ Installation of jammers and cameras in all exam centres, observers from General Administration Department and district administration to look after the exam centres , magistrates, presence of police, third party audit all has been taken care of.”

    The Ohio derailment is still under investigation by multiple agencies, including the Department of Transportation, the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Transportation Safety Board. The NTSB, an independent agency, has said preliminarily that an overheated wheel bearing on one of the cars is partially the culprit for the derailment.

    However, derailments like these typically have multiple points of failure, and the NTSB’s investigation will likely take over a year to complete. Such NTSB probes typically examine any conceivable cause that could have led to a crash, including equipment malfunctions, poor system design, the lack of safety precautions, inadequate training, crew fatigue and myriad other factors.

    “One hundred fifty cars is a really, really significant [number of cars],” said Sarah Feinberg, who dealt with multiple oil-train disasters and a fatal Amtrak derailment as leader of the Federal Railroad Administration under Barack Obama. “For years, the FRA and other safety regulators have raised concerns about trains of that size.”

    Indeed, 150 cars is the FRA’s threshold for classifying a train as “very long,” even though no formal definition exists. In a 2019 study, the Government Accountability Office said 150 cars is more than twice the average length of freight trains operated by major railroads from 2008 through 2017. The GAO found that average freight train lengths had increased by 25 percent since 2008, and noted that some stretch to nearly three miles long.

    The freight rail industry’s main trade group dismissed concerns about length. “Comparable length trains have been safely operating for decades and the industry’s safety record has seen dramatic improvements over those same decades,” said Jessica Kahanek, a spokesperson for the Association of American Railroads.

    But the GAO authors note multiple concerns about train length, including that it can hamper crews’ ability to operate the trains, it can take longer for brakes to stop them, and safety risks can arise when firetrucks can’t get past multiple blocked rail crossings. The FRA wrote in a December report that it lacks the data “to determine safety consequences” of long trains, and in some cases doesn’t have enough authority to act on them.

    The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine is also studying the issue.

    Others, especially labor unions, say the trains are too long for crews on opposite ends to communicate with each other, and that workers on board sometimes can’t hear track-based warning alarms up ahead. “Our radios aren’t built for the distances that these trains are built for,” Cassity said.

    At the same time, one industry analyst noted, freight railroads such as Norfolk Southern, which operated the trains in the Ohio disaster, cannot refuse to carry hazardous materials such as vinyl chloride, one of the toxic, flammable chemicals released in East Palestine. That’s because railroads are considered “common carriers,” which are obligated to transport any legally permitted product.

    “The government does not allow Norfolk Southern and the other railroads to carry hazardous materials,” said rail analyst Tony Hatch. “It compels them to carry them.”

    Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine pledged during a television interview Wednesday to make Norfolk Southern “pay for everything” needed to deal with the aftermath of the disaster, while Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) said in a statement that questions remain about the train’s brakes and DOT’s “regulatory approach to our nation’s rail system.”

    Feinberg also touched on the brake issue, saying she believes that a type of advanced brake could have lessened the damage from the Ohio disaster.

    The DOT under Obama had issued a rule in 2015 requiring railroads to use those kinds of electronically controlled pneumatic brakes on certain especially dangerous trains, in response to a spate of fiery derailments of freight cars transporting crude oil. But the Trump administration repealed the braking mandate in 2017, after a National Academy of Sciences study failed to conclusively determine that ECP braking technology was superior to others.

    The type and location of locomotives used to brake trains is especially important for long trains. The NTSB final report on a 2017 derailment in Pennsylvania faulted the use of hand brakes and the arrangement of freight cars in that accident involving a 178-car train, which also released hazardous chemicals and forced the evacuation of a nearby town.

    “I and many others have said for many years that an ECP braking system is a much safer braking system to have on” any kind of “significant” train load, Feinberg said.

    Norfolk Southern defended the integrity of the train in the Ohio derailment, including its braking configuration. Spokesperson Thomas Crosson told POLITICO that the weight distribution of the train that derailed in Ohio “was uniform throughout” and that a braking locomotive was placed mid-train to help it stop properly.

    The Ohio derailment has also brought intensifying criticism of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, including from conservative media outlets that slammed him for not speaking publicly about the accident until 10 days after it happened. Progressives like Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) are also laying the incident in Buttigieg’s lap and calling on him to take “direct action.”

    After days of calls for Buttigieg to engage more, the secretary weighed in Monday on Twitter to express concern about the people in and near East Palestine, whose “lives were upended through no fault of their own.” He also rattled off the multiple federal agencies involved in responding.

    Railroad unions say the main problem is that corporate cost-cutting measures are eating into safety and raising the likelihood of disaster. This theme — corporate cost-cutting over safety — also underpinned part of why railroad unions threatened to strike last year.

    Unions in particular target railroads’ implementation during the past decade of “precision scheduled railroading,” an operating model that focuses on minimizing workforce costs and maximizing equipment efficiency, including not leaving train cars idle.

    Among the workforce cuts produced by this drive for efficiency were 40 percent of equipment maintenance workers, as GAO reported in December.

    “We’ve heard reports from inspectors that the time they are allotted to inspect both sides of a rail car has decreased by 75 percent — from 2 minutes to as little as 30 seconds — thanks to the rail industry’s profits-over-people business model,” said Greg Regan, president of the AFL-CIO’s Transportation Trades Department.

    Kahanek from AAR responded that not only are trains inspected before departing a rail yard, technology along the track constantly assess each train’s soundness and safety as they move throughout the system.

    Precision scheduling and other cuts made in the name of efficiency have worsened freight rail’s problems, said former Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.), who chaired the House railroad subcommittee. “That was a huge change that reverberated throughout the entire North American freight rail industry,” he said. “And I think there has not been enough of a response by Congress to those changes.”

    Railroads have been losing workers since 2015 and 2016, when waves of layoffs started and those who remained were made to work longer and less predictable hours under challenging conditions. Union officials say they’ve seen many seasoned workers with decades of experience leave the industry in frustration — even forgoing lucrative railroad retirement benefits — and railroads are now scrambling to hire novices to take their place.

    The EPA has told Norfolk Southern it’s potentially liable under the Superfund clean law. But the agency said Sunday that the air in East Palestine is now safe to breathe.

    Abu Dhabi: Dubai International Airport (DXB) has launched a new biometric system, which will allow passengers to travel without a passport or boarding pass from Dubai, local media reported.

    Using the latest biometric technology, travellers can check in for their flights and complete immigration formalities without taking any identification documents.

    As per a report by Gulf News, arriving and departing passengers can scan passports in a few seconds’ via ‘Enhanced Smart Gates’ which feature contactless operation.

    The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) – Dubai stated that verification is done through the iris and biometric information.

    According to the DXB website, passengers must remove anything that covers their face, including masks, glasses and hats.

    Note that passports and boarding passes should be available only when needed.

    This step is part of Dubai’s efforts to develop smart services for smooth travel for all, in line with the leadership’s directives to combine advanced technology in government services, thus improving the quality of life.

    Who can use smart gates?

    Residents of the UAE, Emirates, GCC nationals, entry visa visitors with biometric passports and guests of the Schengen Union can use the new smart gates.

    Who cannot use it?

    People of determination and families with children under the age of 15.

    According to the GDRFA, pre-registered residents who have resided outside the UAE for six months and those with renewed passports or citizenships also cannot use smart gates.

    The association faced widespread criticism after the Palm Beach Post reported that the organization asked student athletes about their menstruation history and was considering making it mandatory.

    During the meeting, a lawyer present with FHSAA read dozens of letters opposing the inclusion of the menstruation questions. The feedback included comments from outraged parents and community members who stated: “This is so out of line … you idiots are sick” and “I thank god I do not have a daughter because I would never allow her to play sports under these standards.”

    Chris Patricca, one of two members who voted against changing the form, told the board members she continued to object to the elimination of the menstrual cycle questions.

    “Many of today’s comments in my opinion could have the impact of further stigmatizing this perfectly normal bodily function — implying that menstruation is in any way shameful is an archaic notion,” Patricca said. “What is controversial is the political pressure that has been placed on the association to look at this through the lens of political hot button issues.”

    The questionnaire caused an uproar in Florida and beyond, in part because parents and others believed it was an invasion of privacy and worried the information could be used to prosecute teen athletes who received abortions outside of the permitted time frame. Florida last year banned women and girls from getting abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, with no exceptions for victims of rape and incest.

    Some LGBTQ advocates also feared the disclosure of an athlete’s menstruation history would stigmatize transgender students. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2021 signed a bill outlawing transgender women and girls from competing in women’s sports.

    John Gerdes, president of the association, said he wanted to make it clear that DeSantis and his office had nothing to do with the decisions made by the board.

    “We felt no pressure from them, they did not contact us,” Gerdes said. “This was our issue to deal with.”

    After the association voted, Florida Senate Minority Leader Lauren Book released a statement thanking the board for rejecting the “bizarre, outrageous, and inappropriate recommendation regarding mandated period tracking for female athletes — and for not only soliciting but actually listening to public testimony.”

    This will make it easier for users to better describe groups, reports WABetaInfo.

    Beta users can now choose a longer group description, up to 2048 characters, as the previous limit was 512 characters.

    Longer group descriptions will help group admins to save additional information for describing their groups.

    Moreover, the characters of the group subject have been increased to 100 to provide admins more freedom when naming their groups.

    The ability to choose a longer group subject and description is available for all users after installing the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS update from the TestFlight app, the report said.

    Last week, a report mentioned that the messaging platform was rolling out similar changes to the group subjects and descriptions on Android beta.
