Biden will back Ukraine for ‘as long as it takes,’ Yellen says in Kyiv

    russia ukraine war 51257

“As you have said, our support is not ‘charity,’” Yellen told Zelenskyy. “It’s an ‘investment in global security and democracy.’”

Yellen’s trip comes a week after President Joe Biden made his own surprise visit to Kyiv, a show of support that marked the one-year anniversary of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

On Friday, the U.S. announced a new $10 billion aid package to Ukraine to support energy and budget costs, as well as $2 billion in security assistance. The U.S. has so far provided Ukraine with close to $50 billion aid, Yellen said Monday in Kyiv.

“Just as your life is a part of the history of Ukraine – I believe that Ukraine is a central part of the history of the free world. And you are writing our history right now,” Yellen said. “As you do, I hope you know this: America stands with you in this fight for freedom. And we will be by your side to help you rebuild.”

  • Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty – Our first impressions

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty – Our first impressions

    [ad_1]

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is ready to officially debut this March 3, 2023, and for this reason the developers have in the meantime released a new demo on all the various digital stores, available from February 24th to March 27th. In these days we have been able to face the first two chapters of the story, obtaining a first overview of what the title will offer shortly. The demo also features the ability to transfer saves to the full version of the game, as well as rewarding the player with bonus equipment if they complete the entire demo.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty will allow us to interpret a unnamed soldier (completely customizable in appearance, as in the pronouns used for the entire storylisten)) engaged in a bloody war at the end of the dynasty Hanwhere the enemies waiting for us will not only be humans, but also demons now out of control for all Three Kingdoms. If we could only get a taste of the intricate storyline for the moment, the same cannot be said of the gameplay. The title is branded Team NINJAsoftware house also creator of the series Nioh, with whom he shares many things. The title stands as soulslike, however, distorting the usual mechanics of the genre in several points. In fact, if the skeleton of the gameplay is a strong reference to what we have already been able to appreciate in the previous works of the software house, there are three novelties of the gameplay on which I would like to focus at least in this first place: the spirit bar, deflection, and the death and rebirth mechanic.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Our first impressions

In fact, the first thing you notice, once you have obtained complete control of the character, is a particular bar placed below our HP and in the center of the screen: the spirit bar. This indicator is divided into two ends, one red and one blue, and represents ours at the same time force (therefore the actual consumption that employs each of our actions) and our “accumulated strength“. Each heavy attack, casting of magic, dodging, parrying or hit will negatively increase our spirit bar, if it fills totally negative (ie red) we will be stunned and vulnerable to enemy attacks. The only way to increase the bar positive (ie blue) is to attack the enemy with light attacks. As soon as the bar has a positive connotation we will be able to deliver a powerful heavy blow capable of reducing the opponent’s spirit bar, as well as inflicting more damage on him. The spirit bar therefore revolutionizes the classic connotation of “vigor bar”leading us to choose more carefully the right moments to attack or defend ourselves.

The second “novelty” instead lies in the deviation. If in other soulslike titles the parry (or counterattack if you prefer) was only a secondary mechanic and at the discretion of the player, in Wo Long it becomes the focus of the entire title, greatly increasing the bar of challenge and difficulty. Whenever an enemy attack is about to hit us, we will be able to rely on the deflection mechanics which, depending on the equipped weapon, it will have a longer or shorter window of time to intercept the enemy attack and turn it against the latter. Obviously a question arises”why can’t we just parry?“. Every time we parry an enemy attack, in addition to receiving an amount of damage only slightly less than the attack itself, we will accumulate a significant amount of negative spirit, immediately finding ourselves exhausted or able to inflict only little damage on the opponent. If, on the other hand, we actually manage to deflect an enemy attack, not only will we not suffer damage and we will not accumulate negative spirit, but we will be able to reduce the opposing spirit and obtain positive spirit ourselves. Moreover some specific attacks (visible from the red aura that is created) they cannot be parried, but only deflected. This mechanic is essential to say the least during boss fights.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Our first impressions

Within the demo we can face three different mandatory boss fights, and of which the first two are oriented precisely on becoming familiar with the two new mechanics mentioned above (and therefore decidedly more difficult). We can say that each boss fight takes place in the same way: deflect each basic attack, inflict heavy attack with positive spirit, inflict critical attack every time we stun it, repeat everything until it is defeated. This may initially seem cumbersome and even frustrating, but I assure you that once you have trained well with the style of play, you will feel a high degree of satisfaction, especially as you will feel “untouchable”.

Last little news is the death and rebirth mechanicbased on the system Moral. Every time we kill an enemy, we will earn points that will fill the counter above our HP bar, called Morale Points. Morale Points indicate our strength within the mission and can be earned through the defeat of opposing enemies or by placing conquest flags along specific points on the map. We will have larger flags available that will act as a “bonfire” (here we can, for example, increase our level through the Life force obtained or learn new spells) and smaller flags that will partially free the area from enemies and will increase our Morale level, as well as the maximum limit that we can keep at each of our deaths. Every time we are defeated we will lose Morale Points and half of the Life Force in our possession (the “souls” of souls to be clear). Upon our death the Morale Rank of the enemy who killed us will increase (does not apply to Bosses) and we can recover everything only by defeating him. If we die again trying to recover them, of course everything will be lost. Unlike classic souls, if it was a boss who defeated us, we will earn it all again as soon as we enter the arena of the clash, without having to look for the lost loot inside the arena and without the risk of losing it by dying again.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Our first impressions

These were the three mechanics that most made me feel a slight breeze of novelty, but there are also the more classic mechanics we are used to. Within the game, based on which parameters we level up, we will be able to obtain points to spend in the same tree for active skills or spells. As well as in Nioh we could get random loot from defeated enemies or inside trunks, with the fight always split between close and distance. The invocations returnfeasible after we have defeated enough enemies and with the player’s ability to invoke them in the form of a spirit that deals damage or as a temporary buff. Technically the demo proved to be quite smooth in performance mode on Playstation 5 (version we tested), especially as we are not talking about open worlds or macro areas, but only about mission maps, even quite small ones.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Our first impressions

At first glance Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty it may seem a Nioh set in China, but the small changes made could provide the title with the right gear to differentiate itself from its predecessor. For our definitive judgement, we will have to wait a few more weeks, and as already reiterated, the release date of the title is set for next March 3 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC as well as being available from day one on Xbox Game Pass.

  • Two years of ceasefire agreement: Silence of guns have filled our lives with joy, happiness; hope this lasts long, say LoC resid

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Feb 25: On February 25, 2021, India and Pakistan army top brass renewed the ceasefire pact in a bid to ensure peace along the Line of Control (LoC). Two years on, the agreement between the two sides is being strictly adhered to paving way for the LoC residents to reap the peace dividends and to live a normal life after so many decades.

The ceasefire violations that otherwise had claimed many lives, left many handicapped, and damaged property worth crores, have come to almost zero since past two years as guns from the both sides have fallen silent.

It is the two years of reaffirmation of the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan. “The ceasefire agreement has changed the lives. Hope this lasts…,” Muhammad Ashraf, a Sarpanch in Uri area of northern district of Baramulla, told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO). “We are happy, so are our families, especially children. Farming activities, schooling, marriages, sports activities are going on peacefully and normally without any fear.”

Ashraf said that people in Uri visit their agriculture fields close to LoC without fear. “Two years have been peaceful years of our lives. The feeling is different and we are delighted and contended,” he said.

Sabir Khan, a resident of Garkote village, close to LoC in Uri, said that he and his family has borne the brunt of ceasefire violations. “I lost my wife and two children to the shelling. My brother lost his leg. There are many like us,” he said. “Hope this silence on LoC continues so that our children can see a peaceful life ahead.”

Youth in Uri are wearing a gentle smile. “It’s really good. We have participated in so many sports activities in past two years. Before that, our parents never allowed us to play in open,” said Zaid Rashid, class 8, student. “We can even go for trekking. This has now become our passion.”

On February 25, 2021, in a surprising development, when tensions were running high on both sides, the DGsMO of India and Pakistan issued a joint statement that read: “In the interest of achieving mutually beneficial and sustainable peace along the borders, the two DGsMO agreed to address each other’s core issues and concerns which have the propensity to disturb the peace and lead to violence. Both sides agreed for strict observance of all agreements, understandings and cease firing along the Line of Control and all other sectors with effect from midnight February 24-25 Feb 2021.”

This was the first time since the 2003 ceasefire agreement that both countries agreed to adhere to the ceasefire. The decision came after the revocation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019. The speculations of many analysts suggested that the ceasefire won’t last long, but prevailing peace along the LoC has proved them wrong.

Residents of Karnah, Teetwal and Kupwara echoed similar story of peace, calm and happiness. “Shelling and exchange of fire damaged our houses, crops and took away our loved ones too,” said Atiqa, a resident of Karnah, adding that “We have tasted peace for the first time in past two years. We can venture out anytime without fear. Our children study and roam around freely. Guns have fallen silent since past two years, we hope this will remain so.” She said earlier, their demand was construction of underground bunkers but now the residents of border villages demand better roads, upgradation of health care infrastructure and better educational set up including colleges, and schools.

Defence officials said that both sides are strictly adhering to the ceasefire pact. “In 2021, there were zero violations and in year 2022 figure is almost same,” said an official—(KNO)

  • Organ damage persists in almost 60 pc of long Covid patients a year after initial diagnosis: Study

Organ damage persists in almost 60 pc of long Covid patients a year after initial diagnosis: Study

    [ad_1]

London: Scientists have found that organ damage persisted in 59 per cent of long Covid patients a year after initial symptoms, even in those not severely affected when first diagnosed with the virus, according to a new study.

The study also found that 29 per cent of patients with long COVID had multi-organ impairment, with persistent symptoms and reduced function at six and twelve months, it said.

The comprehensive study of organ impairment in long COVID patients over 12 months focused on patients reporting extreme breathlessness, cognitive dysfunction and poor health-related quality of life, it said.

According to the study, of the 536 patients who were studied, 13 per cent were hospitalised when first diagnosed with COVID-19, with 32 per cent of people taking part in the study being healthcare workers.

The study found that of the 536 patients, 331, or 62 per cent, were identified with organ impairment six months after their initial diagnosis. It is published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine.

These patients were followed up six months later with a 40-minute multi-organ MRI scan (Perspectum’s CoverScan), analysed in Oxford, the study said.

“Symptoms were common at six and twelve months and associated with female gender, younger age and single organ impairment,” said Amitava Banerjee, Professor of Clinical Data Science at the UCL Institute of Health Informatics, UK.

The study reported a reduction in symptoms between six and 12 months, it said.

Extreme breathlessness came down from being reported in 38 per cent of the patients to 30 per cent of patients, the study said, while cognitive dysfunction came down from 48 per cent to 38 per cent.

Poor health-related quality of life came down from 57 per cent to 45 per cent of patients, the study said.

“Several studies confirm persistence of symptoms in individuals with long COVID up to one year.

“We now add that three in five people with long COVID have impairment in at least one organ, and one in four have impairment in two or more organs, in some cases without symptoms,” said Banerjee.

“Impact on quality of life and time off work, particularly in healthcare workers, is a major concern for individuals, health systems and economies.

“Many healthcare workers in our study had no prior illness, but of 172 such participants, 19 were still symptomatic at follow-up and off work at a median of 180 days,” said Banerjee.

The underlying mechanisms of long COVID remain elusive, said the researchers, who did not find evidence by symptoms, blood investigations or MRI to clearly define long COVID subtypes, the study said.

They said that future research must consider associations between symptoms, multi-organ impairment and function in larger cohorts.

“Organ impairment in long COVID has implications for symptoms, quality of life and longer-term health, signalling the need for prevention and integrated care for long COVID patients,” said Banerjee.

Elon Musk spends long day at Twitter HQ, fixes 2 key problems

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Sunday said that engineers resolved two significant problems on the platform during a “long day at Twitter HQ” with him.

He said that the ‘Fanout service for Following feed’ was getting overloaded when “I tweeted, resulting in up to 95 per cent of my tweets not getting delivered at all”.

“Following is now pulling from search (aka Earlybird). When Fanout crashed, it would also destroy anyone else’s tweets in queue,” Musk added.

He also said that the recommendation algorithm was using absolute block count, rather than percentile block count, “causing accounts with many followers to be dumped, even if blocks were only 0.1 per cent of followers”.

“Also, it’s trivial to bot spam accounts with blocks,” the Twitter CEO said.

Musk also said that oversized fonts and undersized paragraph spacing will be fixed this week.

“Advertising also needs to be semantic keyword-based, so it’s contextually relevant. Amazingly, ads shown when doing twitter searches don’t consider the search words! We’re changing that as fast as possible,” Musk informed.

When a user said that Blocks are quite powerful and “seems like for accounts with a lot of reach, they’ll probably get blocked a lot”, Musk replied that the giant block lists are problematic.

“They mess up the recommendation system & create a DDoS vector,” he added.
