New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday condoled the loss of lives in the accident in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore city in which the roof of a ‘bawdi’ (well) collapsed during a havan, a fire ritual, on the occasion of Ram Navami at a temple.

Gandhi said the news of the accident during the religious programme at Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal Temple in Indore is very saddening.

“I express my deepest condolences to the families of those who died in this accident. I hope for the speedy recovery of all the injured,” the former Congress chief said.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told reporters in Bhopal that 11 people died in the collapse in Indore’s Patel Nagar. The CM said he has ordered a probe into the incident.

TDP filled light in lives of Telugus: Chandrababu Naidu

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) national president and former chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said on Wednesday that his party filled light in the lives of Telugu people.

He greeted Telugu people on the 41st formation day of the TDP and recalled that the party took birth with the slogan of Telugu self-respect.

Naidu appealed to every citizen to strive to achieve the goal of TDP founder N.T. Rama Rao.

It was on March 29, 1982 that N.T. Rama Rao, a famous actor popularly known as NTR, floated TDP on the slogan of Telugu self-respect. The party created a record of sorts by coming to power in then undivided Andhra Pradesh within nine months.

Meanwhile, Naidu’s son and TDP general secretary Nara Lokesh took to Twitter to greet people on the 41st formation day of the TDP. He termed TDP as a symbol of self-respect of Telugu people and a sign of their political consciousness.

Lokesh said the yellow flag stood up for the oppressed classes in tune with the NTR’s ideology. The TDP gave hope to the poor and the weaker sections. The young leader also claimed that TDP has an indelible imprint on the development of various sectors. He said that lakhs of workers are the real strength of the TDP.

Lokesh stated that with the blessings of NTR and under the guidance of Chandrababu Naidu, the TDP will continue to work for its goal of public welfare.

Meanwhile, Chandrababu Naidu will address a meeting of TDP delegates in Hyderabad later Wednesday. After paying floral tributes at NTR Ghat, the TDP chief will reach Exhibition Grounds to address the meeting.

After a long gap, TDP held its politburo meeting in Hyderabad on Tuesday. The meeting presided over by Naidu decided to allot 40 per cent of the party tickets to youth in the next Assembly elections in both the Telugu-speaking states. Naidu asked the politburo members to prepare the party’s manifesto with the objective to transform the lives of the poor.

The politburo discussed various issues pertaining to both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It decided to highlight anti-people, anti-farmer and anti-youth policies being pursued by the governments in both the Telugu states.

Telangana: KCR made tribals and adivasis lives miserable, says Bhatti

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Congress leader Bhatti Vikarmarka on Monday said that chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao turned the lives of tribals and adivasis miserable and threw a challenge to CM to repeat his tremendous development-in-the-state claims.

On day 5 of Haath Se Haath Jodo Yatra in Asifabad and Adilabad, Bhatti said that minister KT Rama Rao’s claims that the per capita income in the state was Rs 3.17 lakh is ridiculous.

“The KCR’s claims of Telangana becoming the richest State and achieving growth are nothing but propaganda and false. The tribal areas and the population do not have access to proper roads, drinking water, housing, or a decent livelihood,” he alleged.

“The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), which was introduced by the previous Congress government is not being implemented properly and the dues of thousands of workers remained uncleared,” the Congress leader said.

He further alleged that the 12 percent reservation for tribal communities has still not seen the light of day. “I am shocked to learn that the BRS government officials are seeking huge bribes from tribals who don’t even earn Rs 100 per day,” he said.

He said that the formation of a government by Congress has now become a necessity to protect the interest of marginalized communities like tribals.

  • Lives at risk as delivery agents race against time to avoid penalties

Lives at risk as delivery agents race against time to avoid penalties

    [ad_1]

Noida: Two delivery agents were killed in separate accidents while they were on duty on Holi. Both the deceased were hit by cars as they raced against the clock to avoid penalties and deliver the orders in time.

According to the police, one of the deceased, identified as Bunty worked as a delivery boy in Noida. He was on his way to deliver an order when an unidentified car driver hit his scooty in Sector-112 of Noida on March 8.

He was admitted to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

In the second incident, Deepak, who worked as a delivery agent in Big Basket, met with an accident while he was on his way to deliver an order near Lotus Boulevard society here, at around 3 p.m. on the same day.

Deepak was hit by a car and was admitted to a government hospital in Nithari where he passed away during treatment.

Sector-39 police station in-charge Ajay Chehar, said that the police sent his body for postmortem and arrested the car driver.

The increase in such accidents points towards the tough competition in the field and the increasing pressure faced by the agents to deliver the orders on time.

Many Apps have fixed time durations for the delivery agents, who, in the course of adhering to it, risk their lives on the roads.

Police officials said that such accidents have increased due to the pressure faced by the agents to deliver the order within the stipulated time limit. Pressurised by the companies, the agents resort to violating traffic rules and over-speeding to achieve the target.

Police officials said that the extra weight that the agents carry also becomes a factor leading to accidents as their vehicles lose balance.

Bal Govind Mishra, who works as a delivery partner in a food App based company, said that he picked up an order from a restaurant on March 15, after which he was informed of a health emergency at his home.

Mishra said that he frantically reached his home and dialled the customer care service of the company, asking them to assign the delivery to another agent, which was denied.

He alleged that he was warned of being fined if he failed to deliver the order. Upon refusal, the company imposed a fine of double the amount of money involved.

He stated that he has appealed in the Labour Court regarding the matter.

Talking to IANS, Mishra said that the company earns around Rs 500 if a delivery agent logs in for 10 hours, out of which the latter is paid Rs 200.

He added that when the log-in time is of 15-16 hours, the company earns around Rs 750 and pays Rs 350 to the agent.

He said that many a times restaurant workers trick the agents by falsely sending a notification of the order being ready on the food delivery App, but when an agent reaches there, they end up waiting for long intervals.

He said that only a notice is issued by the App to the concerned restaurant in this regard.

Mishra added that in the current scenario, delivery agents’ work carries great pressure and gets really difficult and tiring.

Widows of 3 jawans killed in 2019 Pulwama attack seek permission to end own lives

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Widows of three CRPF personnel killed in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack accused the Rajasthan government of not fulfilling its promises made to them and sought permission from Governor Kalraj Mishra to end their own lives, the BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Kirodi Lal Meena said on Saturday.

Meena has been sitting on a dharna here with the family members of the martyrs for the last few days.

He along with the wives of the CRPF personnel killed in the Pulwama attack went to Raj Bhawan to hand over a representation to the governor. After coming out from Raj Bhawant, they started moving towards the chief minister’s residence and were stopped by the police.

Meena alleged that police personnel pushed the women in which Manju Jat, the widow of Rohitashav Lamba got injured and was admitted to the hospital.

The BJP leader said that instead of fulfilling the demands of the families of the martyrs, the state government was taking recourse to “dictatorship”. “The police misbehaved with them even when they were protesting at the assembly gate recently,” he alleged.

Meena and the family members of the Pulwama terror attack martyrs handed over the representation in Raj Bhawan in which Manju Jat, Madhubala, Sundari Devi and Renu Singh sought permission for euthanasia.

Meena is sitting at dharna at Shaheed Smarak with the family members of the martyrs.

  • Bounden duty of state to ensure lives, properties of citizens are always protected: SC

Bounden duty of state to ensure lives, properties of citizens are always protected: SC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has said that it is the bounden duty of any State to ensure that the lives and properties of its citizens and other persons are at all times protected.

It said that every attempt which succeeds at the hands of anyone “whereby the efficacy of criminal law is diluted, will remove the very edifice of the rule of law fatally”.

A bench of Justices K M Joseph and B V Nagarathna made these observations while deciding a petition seeking to transfer a criminal case pending before a Jhajjar court in Haryana to a court in Delhi.

The transfer petition has been filed by 38 people of Jhajjar, whose properties were allegedly vandalized during 2016 agitation by members of the Jat community who were seeking reservation in government jobs and educational institutions.

It is the case of the petitioners that during this agitation, the members of Jat community vandalized and committed acts of arson which allegedly caused huge irreparable damage to them by setting their houses, godowns and other belongings on fire.

The petitioners led by one Sunil Saini sought transfer of the case on the ground that due to an advocate who is alleged to be very influential and had remained President of the Bar, couple of material witnesses have been forced to turn hostile as well as material documentary evidence has not been placed on record.

Counsel for the petitioners contended that they had an application under Section 319 of the CrPC to summon the said advocate and his son but their application was not countersigned by the public prosecutor of the case and therefore they had to knock at the door of this court to get their case transferred to another state so that interest of justice is sub-served.

The bench, in its recent verdict in the matter, did not transfer the case on the ground that 42 witnesses have already been examined but said that the matter requires that some observations and directions be passed.

“The State exists on the basis of implied consent of the Governed. The principal reason for people to come together under the organization of the State is the fundamental principle that the State will be in a position to always protect the lives and properties of the citizens. This is the fundamental unalterable premise for the creation, existence and preservation of any civilized State. It is all the more so, when the State is functioning under a written constitution which guarantees fundamental rights such as ours,” the bench said.

The top court further said, “It is accordingly that rule of law is rightfully treated as part of the basic structure of the Constitution. It is the bounden duty of any State to ensure that the lives of its citizens and other persons are at all times protected. The same goes for their properties.”

The bench added that this is the elementary function of the State but “we are not at this stage called upon to deal with the duties of the State with the mantle of a welfare State falling upon it. Even if this indispensable function to constitute a State is not performed, it would be a lamentable state of affairs”.

It said that the principal mechanism for vindicating the rule of law and upholding the rights of the citizens is the judicial branch of the State.

“One of the fundamental methods by which rule of law is preserved consists of sanctions of which the criminal law is the principal branch. The criminal courts must be allowed to function in a manner by which at the end of the day the guilty are punished and the innocent are exonerated,” it said.

The top court further said that the role of the public prosecutor in all of this is paramount and he is duty bound to always act in a fair manner; not of course, to secure conviction by hook or crook but at the same time, it is his duty to fearlessly adduce evidence so that those who are guilty do not get away scot free.

“Unless this is done, it is very likely that the common man will cease to have faith in the very functioning of the State itself. It is, therefore, integral to the upholding of the integrity of the State itself that the access to justice which is also comprehended in the principle that an offence is committed against the State and the State therefore prosecutes the offender is always borne in mind,” the bench said.

The top court said that it is, therefore, of the utmost importance that in the case in hand, the Special Public Prosecutor who has been appointed will hopefully uphold the highest principles and play the difficult role so that while the innocent are not convicted, the guilty do not escape due punishment.

The bench noted that the Special Public Prosecutor for the case has been appointed only recently and not being unmindful also of his credentials which have been brought to court’s notice, at this stage “we are not persuaded to direct that another person be appointed in his place. However, this is not to be the end of the destiny of this case”.

It said that it will be open to the petitioners to approach the Director of Prosecution in case they believe that even the Special Public Prosecutor appointed is not discharging his duties in a fair and impartial manner.

“It is thereupon for the Director (Prosecution) to look into the matter and take appropriate steps. As far as protection to the witness is concerned, it will be open to the petitioners to move the presiding Judge or Special Public Prosecutor or the Superintendent of Police of the concerned district seeking protection in which case needful shall be done in accordance with law,” the bench directed.

  • Two years of ceasefire agreement: Silence of guns have filled our lives with joy, happiness; hope this lasts long, say LoC resid

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Feb 25: On February 25, 2021, India and Pakistan army top brass renewed the ceasefire pact in a bid to ensure peace along the Line of Control (LoC). Two years on, the agreement between the two sides is being strictly adhered to paving way for the LoC residents to reap the peace dividends and to live a normal life after so many decades.

The ceasefire violations that otherwise had claimed many lives, left many handicapped, and damaged property worth crores, have come to almost zero since past two years as guns from the both sides have fallen silent.

It is the two years of reaffirmation of the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan. “The ceasefire agreement has changed the lives. Hope this lasts…,” Muhammad Ashraf, a Sarpanch in Uri area of northern district of Baramulla, told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO). “We are happy, so are our families, especially children. Farming activities, schooling, marriages, sports activities are going on peacefully and normally without any fear.”

Ashraf said that people in Uri visit their agriculture fields close to LoC without fear. “Two years have been peaceful years of our lives. The feeling is different and we are delighted and contended,” he said.

Sabir Khan, a resident of Garkote village, close to LoC in Uri, said that he and his family has borne the brunt of ceasefire violations. “I lost my wife and two children to the shelling. My brother lost his leg. There are many like us,” he said. “Hope this silence on LoC continues so that our children can see a peaceful life ahead.”

Youth in Uri are wearing a gentle smile. “It’s really good. We have participated in so many sports activities in past two years. Before that, our parents never allowed us to play in open,” said Zaid Rashid, class 8, student. “We can even go for trekking. This has now become our passion.”

On February 25, 2021, in a surprising development, when tensions were running high on both sides, the DGsMO of India and Pakistan issued a joint statement that read: “In the interest of achieving mutually beneficial and sustainable peace along the borders, the two DGsMO agreed to address each other’s core issues and concerns which have the propensity to disturb the peace and lead to violence. Both sides agreed for strict observance of all agreements, understandings and cease firing along the Line of Control and all other sectors with effect from midnight February 24-25 Feb 2021.”

This was the first time since the 2003 ceasefire agreement that both countries agreed to adhere to the ceasefire. The decision came after the revocation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019. The speculations of many analysts suggested that the ceasefire won’t last long, but prevailing peace along the LoC has proved them wrong.

Residents of Karnah, Teetwal and Kupwara echoed similar story of peace, calm and happiness. “Shelling and exchange of fire damaged our houses, crops and took away our loved ones too,” said Atiqa, a resident of Karnah, adding that “We have tasted peace for the first time in past two years. We can venture out anytime without fear. Our children study and roam around freely. Guns have fallen silent since past two years, we hope this will remain so.” She said earlier, their demand was construction of underground bunkers but now the residents of border villages demand better roads, upgradation of health care infrastructure and better educational set up including colleges, and schools.

Defence officials said that both sides are strictly adhering to the ceasefire pact. “In 2021, there were zero violations and in year 2022 figure is almost same,” said an official—(KNO)

  • Seth Meyers on Republicans: ‘No interest in improving the lives of working people’

Seth Meyers on Republicans: ‘No interest in improving the lives of working people’

    [ad_1]

    Seth Meyers

On Wednesday evening, Seth Meyers tore into the Republican party’s refusal to deal seriously with the toxic chemical train derailment in Ohio. “They claim they’re the party of the working class, but they don’t actually have ideas for or interest in improving the lives of working class people,” the Late Night host said. “And you can see that in the GOP’s reaction to the catastrophic train derailment and ensuing environmental disaster in Ohio.”

To recap: two weeks ago, a train carrying hazardous material including vinyl chloride derailed near the town of East Palestine, Ohio, releasing a mushroom cloud of toxic chemicals. In the days since, residents have reported respiratory issues and burning eyes, as well as widespread wildlife death. “Of course, when Republicans see a plume of gray smoke, their first thought is, ‘Dear god, did someone open Hunter Biden’s laptop?’” Meyers joked.

In 2018, the Trump administration rolled back a train-braking rule aimed to prevent disasters such as the derailment in Ohio. “I mean, of fucking course he did,” said Meyers. “And I’m sure we didn’t hear about it because it was the same day he tried to buy Greenland or challenged Angela Merkel to a putting contest or drank water weird.”

Meyers then turned to Ohio senator and Trump acolyte JD Vance, who said in an appearance on Fox News that Democrats were “unserious people” in their handling of the disaster. “I’m sorry, you think Democrats are unserious people worried about fake problems?” Meyers laughed. “On that exact same network a day later, a lady in your party said whales are getting killed by windmills.”

The East Palestine environmental disaster is the “perfect example of the kind of thing a serious governing party should have answers for,” Meyers concluded. “It’s absolutely true that Democrats can and should do more. Meanwhile, Republicans are talking about culture war BS.”

    Stephen Colbert

On the Late Show, Stephen Colbert continued to speculate about alien contact after the US military shot down three unidentified flying objects in as many days. And on Monday, the US set up a new task force on UFOs.

Interesting coincidence, Colbert noted: “That’s like your flight attendant saying, ‘Uh, attention passengers, everyone in the cockpit is totally fine and conscious. Totally unrelated, we are setting up a task force on how to land a plane.’”

US senators were given a classified briefing on Tuesday, which John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana, summed up as: “The only thing I feel confident in saying right now is that if you’re confused, you understand the situation perfectly.”

“Then I’m all caught up,” Colbert deadpanned.

Kennedy also said the UFOs have been “going on for a long, long, long time”, since at least 2017. “Do you know what that means? The aliens were singing Despacito,” Colbert joked.

It is possible, he added, that the UFOs could be sky trash detected with new sensitivity on radar settings; the White House said there are “hundreds, if not thousands”, of trash objects in the sky, including used car lot balloons. “So not only did our Air Force get a direct hit, they also got an incredible deal on a pre-owned Buick Regal,” Colbert joked.

    Jimmy Kimmel

In Los Angeles, Jimmy Kimmel reacted to news that researchers are closing in on a male birth control pill, with a pill that will stop sperm from swimming for an hour. The drug has been tested in mice, “and after ingesting it, none of the mice got any women pregnant, so that’s good”, he joked.

“They say their ultimate plan is to crush the pills up, put them into a tranquilizer dart, and hide in a tree outside Nick Cannon’s house,” he added.

Kimmel also touched on the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, which the US military said earlier this week are not aliens or Chinese spy balloons. “The best guess right now is that there were some overly aggressive Re/Max agents on the loose,” said Kimmel, referring to the real estate company with a hot air balloon logo.

“It’s cute that we brief senators on this story,” he added, “as if we found out that the aliens were invading, Joe Manchin would know what to do.”

    The Daily Show

And on the Daily Show, guest host Sarah Silverman mocked Elon Mock, the Twitter CEO and “man who has definitely scissored a robot”.

“If you felt that your Twitter feed was especially flooded with Elon’s tweets this week, you weren’t alone,” she explained. “Apparently Elon’s tweets weren’t going viral enough, so he pressured his engineers to design a special algorithm just for him” which would push his tweets above others to all users.

“Because it behooves all of us to be privy to the fresh and original insights of the richest man in the world,” she deadpanned.

“Really though, this is just the most pathetic thing I’ve ever heard,” she continued. “I don’t understand how someone can have 15 kids and still be an incel.” She even felt bad for him – “this man paid $44bn to get the same insecurities that I have for free.”

  • Big pharma must value African lives above profits, warns head of UNAids

Big pharma must value African lives above profits, warns head of UNAids

    [ad_1]

The head of UNAids, Winnie Byanyima, has strongly criticised pharmaceutical giants for prioritising profits over saving lives, and warned that “racist” inequalities are undermining progress towards ending Aids, especially in Africa.

Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for more than half of all new infections, with women and marginalised groups facing higher new infection rates. Aids-related illnesses were the leading cause of mortality among African women, and adolescent girls and young women were three times more likely than men to get HIV.

“Many times, they don’t come forward for fear of society’s sanctions against them,” said Byanyima, stressing that girls and women should be able to access sexual and reproductive services privately.

She knows well about the impact of the stigma of HIV. At a recent speech at the University of Nairobi Byanyima told a personal story about how her brother, who had HIV, stopped using antiretroviral (ARV) drugs when they returned home to Uganda, while he would use them with few issues when he lived in Europe. “He didn’t die of HIV. He was killed by stigma,” she told the conference.

Marginalised groups on the continent, including sex workers, gay men and transgender people, accounted for a large proportion of new infections in 2021. Thirty-two African countries have laws criminalising same-sex relations, and this often stops LGBTQ+ people accessing sexual and reproductive health services.

“Where there are various factors of inequality, that’s where you see the highest [HIV] cases,” said Byanyima. “They combine to crush people”.

Africa suffers disproportionately from Aids, and its response is still largely dependent on international funding, with most countries on the continent in debt distress or at risk of it. The debt crisis is fuelling mass cuts in health and development spending, and UN leaders have warned that the “vicious debt cycle” is pushing countries in the global south into making “impossible-trade offs” – a situation Byanyima says is playing out “across the continent”.

Kenya spends up to five times more on debt servicing than it does on health, and Ghana and Zambia have defaulted on their external debt in the last few years, prompting concerns that the debt crisis may spiral further, with devastating impacts for health and education spending. Studies cited by UNAids suggest that girls who completed secondary school were 50% less likely to become infected with HIV as they were less vulnerable to patriarchal power dynamics and poverty than their counterparts.

A woman pours large white tablets into the palm of one hand from a small white plastic bottle.

Barriers to health technology access the global south have also worsened health inequalities. The injectable drug cabotegravir, for instance – administered every two months and considered the most effective form of prevention – is only available in high-income countries like the UK and the US, and even there remains largely unaffordable. Last year, Zimbabwe became the first African country to approve the drug for use, but with the country in economic crisis the drug remains effectively unavailable.

Last year, after months of pressure from UNAids and other health organisations, UK pharmaceutical company ViiV – which owns a patent for the drug – approved certain manufacturers in 90 low and middle-income countries to develop generic versions.

“The injectable [treatment] would be a gamechanger,” said Byanyima, “particularly for people in countries where there’s stigma and where there are criminal laws against certain groups.”

Gay men in countries with the most severe anti-LGBTQ+ laws were more than three times less likely to know their HIV status than their counterparts in countries with the least restrictive laws, according to the UNAids 2022 report.

    skip past newsletter promotion

Incentives are lacking for innovation, said Byanyima, and the profits companies can make from lifesaving medications need to be regulated. She pointed to the pharmaceutical entrepreneur Martin Shkreli, who became a symbol of “pharma greed” after his controversial decision to hike the price of lifesaving drug Daraprim, used in the treatment of Aids patients, by 5,000% in 2015.

“The World Trade Organization rules allow lifesaving medications to be traded in the same way we could trade luxury goods. They allow pharmaceutical companies to set the price wherever they want, hoard their technologies and reap billions at the cost of lives,” she said.

Such policies expose racial inequalities and discrimination in health, she said. “To me, that’s racism, even though people don’t want to call it out: valuing the profit of a few people, who happen to be white, over the lives of black and brown people around the world.”

She pointed to the disproportionate impacts of the Covid pandemic on racial groups across the globe, and added: “For Africa, the lesson was: you must have the capacity to produce yourself.”

Byanyima urged African governments to set aside funds for research and development and explore equitable south-south partnerships.

Rahul Gandhi ‘anguished’ over loss of lives caused by earthquake in Turkey, Syria

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Monday expressed grief at the loss of life and devastation caused by an earthquake in Tukey urging the global community to come together to ensure “swift relief” in the affected region.

Taking to Twitter, the Wayanad MP said, “Anguished by the news of lives lost in the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria. The global community must come together to ensure swift relief to the affected region. My thoughts are with families of those who have lost their loved ones.”

Party President Mallikarjun Kharge also said that he was “deeply saddened” by the huge loss of life and property in the massive earthquake that rattled Turkey and nearby areas.

“We are deeply saddened by the huge loss of life and property by the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria. In this hour of grief, every Indian stands with the affected people of both the countries. Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims,” Kharge said.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the loss of lives in the earthquake.

Deeply anguished over the loss of lives and property in Turkey, the Prime Minister said, adding that India stands in solidarity with Turkey in this tough time.

PM Modi, while addressing the people at the India Energy Week 2023 event, in Bengaluru, Karnataka said that India is ready to provide all possible help to the earthquake-affected people in Turkey.

At least 1,541 people were killed and 9733 others were injured when two earthquakes hit southern provinces of Turkey on Monday, Anadolu Agency reported citing Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.7, centered in the Pazarcik district, jolted Kahramanmaras and hit several provinces, including Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmaniye, Hatay, and Kilis, as per the Anadolu Agency report.

Later, an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 centered in Kahramanmaras’s Elbistan district jolted the region. Fuat Oktay said that earthquakes had a total of 145 aftershocks and 3,741 buildings collapsed, as per the news report. The earthquake was also felt in several neighboring countries, including Lebanon and Syria.

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said that nearly 9700 search and rescue personnel have been working in the region, as per the Anadolu Agency report. According to AFAD, there is no tsunami threat to the Eastern Mediterranean coasts in Turkey.

The death toll in Syria due to the earthquake has reached 237 deaths and 639 injured, mostly in Lattakia, Aleppo, Hama, and Tartous, SANA reported.
