  • Noori, Kashmir’s First Cloned Pashmina Goat Died, Helped the Dream Live

    [ad_1]

    by Faiqa Masoodi

SRINAGAR: The world’s first cloned female Pashmina goat, Noori, is no more. She died a natural death on March 15 after living a life of 11 years and already being a grandmother.

The goat was the first ever animal that SKUAST-K produced through cloning. Her birth was a major development in veterinary science in Kashmir.

The goat kid was born in 2012 after the strenuous efforts of years put in by Dr Riaz Ahmad Shah and six other researchers who brought cloned Noori, into the world on March 9, catapulting Kashmir straight into the international limelight.

All her life, Noori lived at SKUAST and mothered seven kids, two female and five male.

Defying all notions that cloned species are susceptible to various ailments, Noori lived a healthy life and reached an advanced age in good health.

It was after the premature death of Dolly sheep, the first mammal to be cloned that scientists developed doubts that cloning accelerates the ageing process and other related problems. However, Noorie proved this isn’t the case as cloning also follows routine motherhood after the initial stage.

Dr Riaz said that Noori lived a healthy life of more than 11 years since her birth which is the average life span for this species. She died of old age and passed away peacefully at sheep and goat research station SKUAST-K leaving behind a great legacy.

“Age-related issues had started to show up in Noorie and she had stopped food intake,” Dr Riaz said. “Her teeth were falling out making it difficult for her to graze adequately.”

Noorie, meaning light, was seen as a ray of hope by scientists who knew that the female kid would pave the way for mass production of silky soft wool, the prized fibre.

Noori, when born, had such a shiny lustrous coat that my colleague Prof Maqbool Darzi named it Noori, and the light that she brought into the world of science will continue to inspire us to do better in our field, Dr Riaz said.

“We are aiming to diversify the cloning process and are trying to get hold of the gene editing process and transgenic animal research. If that happens, we will be able to have mass production of pashmina,” Dr Riaz, who is literally the father of cloning in India, said. Currently, he is the Chief Scientist at Animal Cloning and Transgenic Laboratory, Division of Animal Biotechnology, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences SKUAST-Kashmir.

“The average pashmina production in a pashmina goat is around 200 grams. If we are successful in creating a Gene-edited cloned goat, the first of its kind, we can take the pashmina production up and have 300 grams of production per goat,” he said while offering an idea about the focus of his current research.

Before Noorie happened, a doctoral student at National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) in Karnal, Dr Riaz had invested painstaking efforts and expertise in developing the first buffalo clone Garima many years ago. It was for the first time he switched to a comparatively easier and cost-effective technique; different from the one utilized to produce Dolly, the world’s first cloned sheep in 1996.

Buoyed by the success, Dr Riaz submitted a proposal jointly with the NDRI to the government of India. He hoped to secure assistance for furthering research in Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer, a key technique that later went on to make the project Noori happen.

“While NDRI continued to carry out its research on buffaloes, we zeroed in on a different species,” Dr Riaz said.

Project Noorie was different; she was from our native place and had tremendous economic importance.

Subsequently, Rs 2 crore funding package for a four-year period breathed life into his project. From a sufficient amount, he created a world-class laboratory before roping in the finest battery of research scholars and scientists who helped him hit the target. In this process, Riaz said, they also learned how to skilfully preserve an embryo and transfer it to recipients.

In the next three years, a near-miraculous development happened. Scientists isolated an egg cell from a goat before extracting out its innards, creating space for administering the DNA, a biological rulebook, of a Pashmina goat.

Once the DNA was integrated, the egg cell was rammed into the skin cells of a Pashmina goat, giving rise to an embryo that would further journey towards becoming a foetus. “The new offspring was an exact duplicate of the Pashmina goat whose DNA had been extracted from its skin cell,” Riaz said.

His department is rearing a huge herd of Pashmina goats that defies the tradition that these goats cannot survive outside Ladakh. However, the wool output of these goats is slightly low. If cloning becomes a success, Kashmir finally can have Pashmina herds too.

Ramzan in India: Here are live updates on Moon sighting

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Ramzan, also known as Ramadan, is a holy month for Muslims all over the world, including India. The month of Ramzan is observed by fasting and offering prayers. The date for the beginning of Ramzan in India is declared based on the sighting of the crescent.

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee President Majlis-e-Ulama-e-Deccan is going to hold its monthly meeting on March 22, 2023, at 6:00 pm at Khanqah Kamil, Astana Shutaria Dabeerpura, Hyderabad, to declare the date for the beginning of Ramzan in India. This meeting is crucial as it will decide when the holy month of Ramzan will begin in the country.

Muslims asked to report crescent sighting in Hyderabad

In Hyderabad, the committee has provided phone numbers for people to inform if they sight the crescent.

Whoever sees the moon before 8 pm should inform the phone number 24603597, and after 8 o’clock on the phone numbers 24513246, 24576832, 24521088, or mobile numbers 9866112393, 9391964951, 9885151354, 900008138.

When is Ramzan starting in India?

If the crescent is sighted today, then the holy month of Ramzan in India will begin tomorrow. Otherwise, it will start on Friday.

However, in Saudi Arabia, the crescent was not sighted on Tuesday evening, and hence Ramzan will begin on Thursday in the country. The same is true for other Middle East countries, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Ramzan in India is marked by fasting, prayer, and charitable deeds. People are encouraged to help the needy and the poor during the holy month.

    Live updates

6 pm: In New Zealand, Moon has not been sighted today. As confirmed and announced by the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ), the first day of Ramzan will be on Friday.

Imran Khan hearing: Pak’s media watchdog imposes ban on live coverage of events at Islamabad court

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Pakistan’s electronic media watchdog on Saturday banned satellite television channels from broadcasting live coverage of events outside the Islamabad court where former prime minister Imran Khan is set to appear in a corruption case against him.

Khan, the 70-year-old chief of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, is scheduled to appear before the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Zafar Iqbal to attend proceedings on the complaint filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for allegedly concealing details of gifts in his assets declarations.

In an advisory issued Saturday, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) stated that it has been observed with concern that satellite TV channels are showing live footage and images of a violent mob, and attacks on police and law enforcement agencies.

“Such footage/images were seen on TV screens without any editorial oversight during a recent standoff between political party workers and law enforcing agencies in Lahore wherein, a violent mob used petrol bombs, injuring armless policemen and blazing police vehicles. The live telecast of such footage on different satellite TV channels created chaos and panic among the viewers and Police.”

The Pemra letter said that such activism by the mob not only jeopardises the law and order situation but also makes public properties and lives vulnerable.

The airing of such content violates a judgment of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the media regulator said.

According to a statement, Pemra referred to the clashes between PTI workers and law enforcement personnel outside Khan’s Zaman Park residence, saying it had “observed with concern” that satellite TV channels were “showing live footages (sic) /images of a violent mob, attacks on police and law enforcing agencies”.

Pemra, in its order, said that it has prohibited live/recorded coverage of any kind of rally, public gathering, or procession by any party, organisation and individual for March 18, including from the judicial complex, Islamabad.

The regulator further said that the license will be suspended in case of non-compliance with the order.

Khan has been in the crosshairs for buying gifts, including an expensive Graff wristwatch he had received as the premier at a discounted price from the state depository called Toshakhana and selling them for profit.

Khan was ousted from power in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote, which he alleged was part of a US-led conspiracy targeting him because of his independent foreign policy decisions on Russia, China and Afghanistan.

Since his ouster, Khan has been clamouring for immediate elections to oust what he termed an “imported government” led by prime minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Sharif has maintained that elections will be held later this year once the parliament completes its five-year tenure.

“You live thanks to this company!” The politician’s comment for the selfies asked of Maria De Filippi during the funeral home: his words

    [ad_1]

Also Mario Adinolfi on selfie with Maria De Filippi intervenes to have his say. Taking pictures with the widow, albeit famous, in front of the coffin of her husband, Maurizio Costanzo, also famous, is in bad taste for the Italian journalist and politician. But Adinolfi continues arguing that, moreover, the presenter lives thanks to this company, so nothing strange.

The Italian journalist and politician has decided to comment on the ugly gesture of some fans who, in the funeral home set up for Maurice Costanzothey asked for a photo with Maria De Filippi, his fourth wife, who was widowed.

In fact, someone had the courage to ask the host of You’ve Got Mail for a selfie, visibly grief-stricken. Many people have criticized both the fans and De Filippi’s choice to comply with their requests. To these voices is added that of Mario Adinolfi.

Adinolfi, in fact, said that it was obviously an indelicate and inappropriate gesture. But then he took the opportunity to attack Maria De Filippi, almost as if to tell her that she brought it on herself.

If you live thanks to a clouded society that ‘dances with the stars’ and is passionate about polemic controversies, you cannot preach to poor people who ask for selfies from the famous widow of the deceased famous. It is true that it is indelicate to ask, but De Filippi knows that it is a price to pay.

Mario Adinolfi, selfie with Maria De Filippi: his post on social media causes discussion

The journalist’s words were deeply criticized. The public on Twitter responded in kind to Adinolfi, for a comment according to many as inappropriate as the request for a selfie in front of Costanzo’s coffin.

In fact, there are those who argue that Mario Adinolfi showed the same zero empathy that the people who asked the widow to pose in the funeral home showed, where many said their last goodbyes to her husband.

Robert Lewandowski will not be present. FC Barcelona has communicated this morning through its social networks that the Polish player suffers an injury that will keep him away from the pitch for 14 days. The former Bayern player joins Pedri and Ousmane Dembélé on the list of players who will not travel to Madrid. Very important losses for Barcelona fans.

On the part of Real Madrid, the infirmary is not so full. Rodrygo, Alaba and Mendy are the players who will not be available for the big game on Thursday.

Barça have been at a very low level for two consecutive games, while Madrid were not able to defeat Atlético de Madrid, but last week they exhibited themselves at Anfield.

From 90min we are betting on a close match with few goals, because although the meringues have more ballots to win given the losses of Barça, in the rear the culés are still impeccable.
