    Heavy rains continue to lash Karnataka, one killed by lightning

    Bengaluru: Heavy rains continued to lash poll-bound Karnataka on Tuesday, leaving one man dead in Belagavi district.

    The rains came as the state is all set to go for polls on Wednesday (May 10) for crucial Assembly elections which are considered as semi-finals to 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

    The meteorological department has predicted heavy rains in the state for another five days.

    Yellow alert has been issued to the south and north interior region and coastal regions. Meanwhile, large scale damages have been reported from many districts of the state due to heavy rains.

    Parlesh Rathod, a resident of Obalapura village in Ramadurg taluk of Belagavi , died on the spot on Tuesday following a lighting strike as heavy rains and thunderstorms were reported in most parts of the district.

    Capital city Bengaluru has been turned into a “hill station” following drizzle and cloudy atmosphere. Heavy rains on Monday evening causing severe inconvenience to commuters.

    A huge tree in the premises of the government school converted into polling station at Kotanuru in Kalaburgi district has been uprooted, disrupting the preparations for the polling. The authorities were clearing the debris from the premises.

    Heavy rains have lashed many parts of the Gadag district and authorities are worried over the situation on polling day if the heavy rains continue.

    The rains have uprooted trees in Keshwapura road in Hubballi. The forceful winds have brought down the pandal installed to distribute voting machines in the premises of a school there.

    SRINAGAR: A man was injured due to a lightning strike in the Aloosa Dal area of Handwara, located in the North Kashmir Kupwara district.

    According to an official, the injured person has been identified as Ab Rashid Mir, son of Gh Ahmad Mir, a resident of Dardsun Reshigund.

    The incident occurred during the evening due to a thunderstorm, and the injured person received immediate first aid at the SDH Kralpora. He was later shifted to the district hospital in Handwara, where his condition is reported to be stable.

    Kupwara, May 7 (GNS): A man was hospitalised with injuries after struck by a lightning in Dardsun Kralpora area in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district this evening, officials said.

    They told GNS that one Abdul Rashid Mir, son of Ghulam Ahmad Mir, resident of Dardsun Reshigund in Kralpora suffered injuries at Aloosa.

    The individual, they said, was shifted to SDH Kralpora from where he was referred to DH Handwara. “He as per doctors is responding well to treatment as of now”, the officials said further. (GNS)

    SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir recorded major drop in temperature while as weather department on Sunday forecast more rain, thunderstorm, and lightning at most places of the Kashmir Valley and many places of the Jammu region during late afternoon and evening.

    “Hailstorms with gusty winds are also expected at a few places,” an official of the meteorological department said.

    On May 8, he said, rain and thunderstorm were expected at many places of J&K with the possibility of “hailstorms and gusty wind at one or two places.”

    He said mainly dry weather was expected on May 9-12.

    He advised farmers to postpone spraying of orchards and harvesting of crops till May 8.

    Tourists have been asked to keep warm clothes and eatables ready as the weather will be colder till May 8.

    Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 6.5°C against 10.4°C on the previous night and it was 4.2°C above normal for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 5.2°C against 8.0°C on the previous night and it was below normal by 4.0°C for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 2.1°C against 5.4°C on previous night and it was 3.4°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of 4.2°C against 8.2°C on the previous night and it was 5.0°C below normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of 0.4°C against 4.0°C on previous night and it was 4.8°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 6.3°C against 7.4°C as on the previous night and it was 3.0°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 16.1°C against 19.7°C on the previous night and it was 6.9°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal recorded a low of 6.3°C (below normal by 4.6°C), Batote 8.3°C (4.5°C below normal), Katra 13.8°C (5.9°C below normal) and Bhaderwah 6.7°C (below normal by 2.9°C). Ladakh’s Leh recorded a low of minus 0.8°C, he added. (GNS)

    SRINAGAR: Officials have reported that four people, including a couple, were killed in incidents of cloud burst and lightning strikes at two different locations in the Kashmir Valley on Saturday.

    According to a senior police officer, a cloudburst occurred in the Bujbagh area of Pampore in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district this afternoon, resulting in the deaths of Hilal Ahmed Hanji (25) and his wife, Rozia Jan (25).

    In a separate incident, officials informed GNS that two people died after being struck by lightning in a high-altitude meadow land in the Mujpathri area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district. The deceased have been identified as Taja Begum, wife of Abdus Samad Chopan, and Mohammad Sultan Chopan, son-in-law of Ghulam Mohammad Chopan of Gurwaith Kalan.

    They added that the police have registered cases in connection with both incidents.

    Sri Lanka issues flood, lightning warnings for 12 districts

    Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology on Saturday issued a warning of heavy floods for 12 out of a total of 25 districts in the South Asian country, where heavy rains were reported over the last few days.

    The 12 districts are Puttalam, Kurunegala, Kandy, Gampaha, Kegalla, Nuwara Eliya, Colombo, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Galle, Matara and Hambantota.

    The department said heavy showers of more than 100 mm will hit the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-Western provinces and the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts, Xinhua news agency reported.

    Heavy showers of about 75 mm are expected in the other above mentioned districts.

    Meanwhile, the department also issued an advisory for severe lightning for 18 districts.

    The public was asked to take necessary precautions against floods and lightning.
