  • World Liver Day: Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Cases On Rise, Doctors Blame Lifestyle

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: While expressing concern over the rising fatty liver cases in Kashmir, doctors said that the sedentary lifestyle and consumption of junk food is the key reason behind surge in fatty liver cases in Kashmiri population.

A leading oncologist at SKIMS Soura Dr Zahoor said that fatty liver or Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) has emerged as a major lifestyle disease in the modern world.

“It is mainly associated with intake of high calorie, processed food with poor physical activity and these people usually tend to have high BMI, hypertension and diabetes mellitus,” he said.

Fatty liver can lead to fibrosis of liver and subsequent Chronic Liver Disease (CLD), he said, adding that it is emerging as one of the major causes of liver cancer worldwide overtaking viral hepatitis in causing so.

Dr Mohammad Salim Khan, head of Department of Community Medicine at GMC Srinagar said that the sedentary lifestyle, consumption of junk food, change in dietary pattern with consumption of food rich in fat, salt and sugar, very limited physical activities, stress, indulgence in alcoholism, all are contributing to increasing liver diseases especially fatty liver.

Furthermore, injecting drug use (abuse, addiction) with sharing of needles and syringes has caused an epidemic of viral Hepatitis, especially Hepatitis-C and Hepatitis-B, he said.

In order to prevent this disease, change in lifevstyle is the need of the hour. People should bring a change in their dietary habbits and avoid junk food at earliest, he added.

Srinagar, Apr 19: Sedentary lifestyle and consumption of junk food is the key reason behind surge in fatty liver, doctors said while expressing concern over the rising fatty liver population in Kashmir.

A leading oncologist at SKIMS Soura Dr Zahoor told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that fatty liver or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) has emerged as a major lifestyle disease in the modern world.

Dr Mohammad Salim Khan, head of Department of Community Medicine at GMC Srinagar at GMC Srinagar told KNO that the sedentary lifestyle, consumption of junk food, change in dietary pattern with consumption of food rich in fat, salt and sugar, very limited physical activities, stress, indulgence in alcoholism, all are contributing to increasing liver diseases especially fatty liver.

Furthermore, injecting drug use (abuse, addiction) with sharing of needles and syringes has caused an epidemic of viral Hepatitis, especially Hepatitis-C and Hepatitis-B, he said.

DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan said that junk food is causing a spike in fatty liver cases in the valley as junk food has become a routine part of people’s lives and has largely replaced homemade meals.

“Fast food is the quickest meal not just for busy professionals, but there is a rising trend of fast food among children and teenagers. They are often seen eating fast foods like pizzas and burgers. Children are addicted to chips, sugary drinks and frozen ready meals,” he said.

“This change in dietary habits from homemade to processed and convenient foods is the primary factor contributing to the enormous burden of fatty liver in Kashmir,” he said.

“If you are obese or diabetic, fast food has an even more negative impact on the liver and can lead to even higher amounts of fat in the liver,” he said.

Dr Nisar said one in three persons in Kashmir have fatty liver and young people are mostly hit while the prevalence of disease is 60-70% among diabetics and obese individuals.

People with fatty liver have a greater chance of developing cardiovascular disease, he said.

“In order to prevent this disease, we need to go back to our culture of taking homemade meals and avoid junk food. We need to be on roads and gyms rather than in luxury cars,” Dr Nisar said

  • Bad lifestyle, stress major causes of heart attack: Experts

Bad lifestyle, stress major causes of heart attack: Experts

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Since Covid, the cases of heart attack are increasing rapidly. Along with the elderly, there has also been an increase in cases of heart attack and sudden cardiac death among the youth, said doctors at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi.

Dr Tarun Kumar, Professor, Department of Cardiology, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Delhi, said, “Many cases of sudden cardiac death have been seen, in which many cases of sudden fainting or heart attack while doing gym have come to the fore. Many such videos have also come to the fore, in which people suddenly fell and died while dancing or walking. Such cases are heart attack patients only, in which there are cases of sudden cardiac death. The cause of sudden cardiac death is heart attack only.”

Dr Tarun also stated that cases of influenza virus H3N2 have also come to the fore in the present time itself, in which symptoms like cough, cold, fever and body ache are seen.

He said, “Difficulty in breathing is also seen. Many times the patient also needs to be admitted to the hospital, but nothing can be said about whether there has been an increase in heart attack cases due to this virus. But after the coronavirus, it has been seen that there has been an increase in the cases of heart attack and more cases are being reported among the elderly as well as among the youth.”

“Recently a case of heart attack was reported in a 20-year-old man and heart attack cases have increased in the youth for some time, the main reason behind this is the change in your lifestyle during corona. The eating habits of people have changed. People are also moving towards bad lifestyle instead of a healthy lifestyle. Due to the increase in weight of many people, their lifestyle has also changed,” he added.

The doctor also highlighted that earlier heart attack was mostly seen in people of 60 years of age, but now cases of heart attack are also coming in the youth of 20 to 30 years of age and the important reason behind this can be your bad lifestyle, unhealthy food, smoking and consumption of alcohol etc.

Dr Tarun Kumar further said, “If there is any problem like chest pain, or difficulty in breathing in the youth, then do not ignore it. Because many times it is seen that many symptoms appear before a heart attack, but the youth ignore it thinking that this problem is not seen in them but in people of 50 to 60 years of age. It can happen in people of any age, that’s why if any symptoms are seen, it is very important to consult a doctor immediately and get your test done.”

“Along with this, do exercise daily for a healthy lifestyle, and avoid smoking and consuming alcohol. Along with this inculcate healthy lifestyle habits in children below 20 years of age to reduce the cases of art attacks in youth,” he added.

Director of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Dr Ajay Shukla said, “You see, all of these things have multiple reasons, right? One is that many people have a very sedentary lifestyle. Many people eat junk food. Many people are stressed because of either exams or jobs, you know. So, there are a lot of factors. And plus, of course, the medical sciences have advanced tremendously, and we are able to diagnose things faster. So earlier things used to happen and we didn’t know what happened. So now you get to know what happened. And so all of these things together, awareness, alertness, and patience, and reaching the hospital faster has helped.”

“Basically, it’s about lifestyle. So eat less sugar, eat less salt, and do some exercise. If you have got to run around then just do yoga. Yoga is a great exercise, right? And keep yourself active. Try to avoid stress in life. So these are the things which are in your hands,” he added.

  • Junk food, sedentary lifestyle pushing more children towards obesity in Kashmir: DAK

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Mar 4 (GNS): On world obesity day, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Saturday expressed pressing concern over rise in the number of obesity cases among children in Kashmir valley.

“Junk food and sedentary lifestyle are pushing more children towards obesity,” said DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan.

According to a latest survey by National family Health Survey (NFHS-5), Kashmir has registered an increase in the percentage of obesity among children.

The number of overweight children increased from 2.1 percent in NFHS-4 survey conducted in 2015-16 to 3.4 percent in NFHS -5 which was conducted in 2019-20.

Dr Hassan said one big factor for this spike is junk food which has largely replaced homemade meals.

Children are often seen taking fast foods like burgers and pizzas.

They are addicted to chips, sugary drinks and frozen ready meals.

“Television advertisements targeting children and junk foods being sold in school cafeterias are shifting dietary habits of children from healthy food to processed food,” he said.

He further said with high dependency on smartphones, we are increasingly witnessing children leading to sedentary lifestyle.

“And physical inactivity is also contributing to spike in obesity cases among young ones,” he said.

The DAK President said childhood obesity has been linked to health conditions like Diabetes, Asthma, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, joint problems and liver disease.

“Many of these health conditions had only been seen in adults, now they are extremely prevalent in overweight children,” he said.

“Obesity is becoming a major health crisis. We need to do more to raise awareness and encourage action towards its elimination,” said Dr Nisar.

He said it is vitally important to educate parents to prevent their children from becoming obese.

They have to encourage them to eat healthy and take up some sport in leisure time.

“Preventing obesity helps protect your child’s health now and in the future,” he added. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: The Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) has expressed concern over the increasing number of obesity cases among children in the Kashmir valley. On World Obesity Day, Dr Nisar ul Hassan highlighted that junk food and a sedentary lifestyle are the primary factors contributing to this issue. According to the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), the percentage of obesity among children in Kashmir has increased from 2.1% in NFHS-4 (conducted in 2015-16) to 3.4% in NFHS-5 (conducted in 2019-20).

Children are consuming fast food like burgers, pizzas, chips, sugary drinks, and frozen ready meals. He also highlighted that television advertisements targeting children and junk food sold in school cafeterias are promoting unhealthy dietary habits. Furthermore, high dependency on smartphones has led to children leading sedentary lifestyles, which is another contributing factor.

Childhood obesity has been linked to several health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, joint problems, and liver disease. Dr Nisar stressed the need for parents to encourage their children to adopt healthy eating habits and participate in sports during leisure time to prevent obesity. Preventing obesity helps protect children’s health in the present and future.
