  • Hyderabad’s pride—Banga and Montek share enviable global rise in professional life

Hyderabad’s pride—Banga and Montek share enviable global rise in professional life

    [ad_1]

Ajay Banga nominated by US President, Joe Biden as the next President of the World Bank and Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, former, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, the two prominently turban wearing Sikhs, share a special bond with Hyderabad.

Montek Singh studied at the St Patrick’s High School, Secunderabad. He went on to graduate from St Stephen’s, Delhi and joined the World Bank and also held a high position in the IMF. In contrast, Ajaypal Singh Banga is an alumnus of the Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet. He also graduated from St Stephen’s, then from IIMA and after an illustrious career in the corporate world has now been selected for the highest post at the World Bank.

The announcement of Banga’s imminent role to lead the World Bank has sent Hyderabadis, especially the Public School alumni into a tizzy. The news has gone viral as Banga, the former President and CEO of MasterCard will take over the reins of the World Bank, which along with the IMF (International Monetary Fund) are the most powerful financial arms of the UN, wielding huge power over the financial health of nations and the common people.

Interestingly, from July 1, when Banga assumes office, his Chief Economist at the Bank will be another turban Sikh, Prof Indermit Gill, also of Indian origin and a very strange coincidence indeed. While several distinguished Indian or the Persons of Indian Origin held top positions in the IMF and World Bank, this is the first time that the highest job is coming their way.

A big achiever, Banga, the 1974 alumnus of the HPS, Begumpet hails from a family that has distinguished itself in a variety of areas. His elder brother, Manvinder Singh ‘Vindi’ Banga, an IIT, Delhi, IIM, Ahmadabad alum, who became, Chairman of Hindustan Lever. Their father, Harbhajan Singh Banga, a veteran of two wars with Pakistan retired from the Indian Army as Lt. Gen.

    Banga, Montek & Hyderabad

Ajay Banga and Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, former, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission share some interesting similarities with Hyderabad and their careers. Though separated by nearly two decades in age, both the sardars came to the ‘city of the Nawabs’ as their father’s serving in the defence were posted in the city.

Montek Singh’s father, a defence officer was posted in Secunderabad during the 1950s. Consequently, Montek studied at the St Patrick’s High School for nearly 7 years, before moving on to Delhi. He graduated from the prestigious St Stephen’s College and then an MA & M Phil from Oxford University.

The economist, born in Rawalpindi (now in Pakistan) in 1943, joined the World Bank in 1968 and held several positions over the next decade. In 2001, after holding key economic and planning positions in the Rajiv Gandhi and PV Narasimha Rao governments, Montek was appointed the first Director of the newly created Independent Evaluation Office of the IMF ( International Monetary Fund). He returned to India and served as Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission (2004-14), under Dr Manmohan Singh’s UPA 1&2 governments.

Interestingly, Dr Montek Singh, who supported the N Chandrababu Naidu and Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy governments in combined Andhra Pradesh to develop Hyderabad, was a chief guest at one of the major events connected with the Centenary of St Patrick’s High School.

As an interesting coincidence, the nomination of Ajay Banga to the World Bank comes in the year his Alma mater, HPS Begumpet is celebrating its centenary with a series of events in 2023. The President of the HPS Society, Mr Gusti Noria, while congratulating Ajay Banga for his distinction and wishing him bests said, “We look forward to having him join in the centenary celebrations throughout the year.”

The HPS has produced outstanding achievers in various fields. Ajay Banga, CEO of MasterCard, Shantanu Narayen, CEO of Adobe Systems and Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft figured in the top 10 best performing CEOs in the Harvard Business Review of 2019.

Like Montek Singh, Ajay Banga’s schooling in Hyderabad happened because his father, Harbhajan Singh Banga, hailing from Jalandhar and a veteran of two wars with Pakistan was transferred from Pune to Secunderabad around 1970. As a Brigadier, he served as the Commandant of the MCEME during which time the young Ajay Banga went to the HPS. Again in the footsteps of Montek, Ajay went to St Stephen’s College and graduated in economics.

This is where the comparison perhaps ends. Ajaypal Banga followed his older brother Manvinder to the IIM, Ahmadabad. After that, he began his career in the corporate world with Nestle India in 1981. After a stint in PepsiCo, he moved into banking with the Citibank. After a decade of successful contributions to the bank’s activities and growth in India, Middle East, Africa and Europe, his big break came when he was selected as the CEO of MasterCard in 2009.

During his decade long leadership at MasterCard, the second largest payment company, Ajay Banga was instrumental in driving its phenomenal growth. He was also heading the US-India Business Council and played an influential role. Post MasterCard, he has been the Vice-Chairman with the General Atlantic, a large private equity firm.

Given the vast experience in payment services, dealing with communities and populations across the world, marketing acumen and leadership qualities that he has acquired over the decades, the 63-year- old, Ajaypal Singh Banga is well equipped to take on the challenges that the World Bank faces in the post pandemic era.

“Ajay is uniquely equipped to lead the World Bank at this critical moment in history. He has spent more than three decades building and managing successful, global companies that create jobs and bring investment to developing economies, and guiding organizations through periods of fundamental change. He has a proven track record managing people and systems, and partnering with global leaders around the world to deliver results”, said Joe Biden.

  • SC upholds life imprisonment to woman for killing her 5-year-old child

SC upholds life imprisonment to woman for killing her 5-year-old child

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has upheld the life term sentence handed down to a woman from Tamil Nadu for murdering her five-year-old female child, as she was forced to live with her mother-in-law at the matrimonial home for better education and upbringing of the kid.

A bench of Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and Bela M. Trivedi said: “In an overall comprehension of the material on record and the findings recorded by the trial court and the high court, in our view, no case for interference with the concurrent findings of fact is made out.”

The bench noted that the case was based on circumstantial evidence and even though the prosecution story presented a somewhat difficult proposition, it cannot be ruled out.

In a 43-page judgment, the bench said: “In the facts of the present case, when the prosecution evidence categorically established the fact that the victim child was last seen alive with the appellant only; she was required to explain the circumstances leading to the demise of the child.”

“Upon her failure to do so and failure to give the explanation with regard to the circumstances under which death may have taken place, burden of Section 106 of the Evidence Act operates heavily against the appellant.”

The woman was convicted for the murder of her five-year-old child in the house of her mother-in-law at Perambalur in the morning of June 21, 2007. According to the prosecution case, the appellant’s husband was living abroad for earning livelihood and the appellant was mostly living with her father at Kolakkudi. However, on being forced to live with her mother-in-law for the purpose of upbringing and education of the child, she found the child to be an obstacle in her desire to live separately and hence, strangulated the child to death when her mother-in-law had gone out of the house.

The woman’s counsel argued that the case does not fall under Section 302 IPC, but could only be of culpable homicide not amounting to murder as there was a quarrel between the accused and mother-in-law on the date of the incident because she wanted to go to her father’s place.

To this, the bench said: “Even if it be taken that there was a quarrel of the appellant with her mother-in-law in the morning of the date of incident because the appellant wanted to go the place of her father, it cannot be said that such a quarrel would make it a case of grave and sudden provocation.”

It noted that the circumstances as proved on record, and the manner of commission of crime, make it clear that the present case cannot be brought under any of the exceptions of Section 300 IPC; and conviction and sentencing of the appellant under Section 302 IPC cannot be faulted.

Vahitha was convicted of the offence of murder of her five-year-old child and according to the prosecution case, her husband was living abroad for earning livelihood and the appellant was mostly living with her father, Jamal Mohammed at Kolakkudi.

The trial court had relied upon the last seen evidence and convicted her, disregarding her plea for alibi that she was at her father’s place at Kolakkudi.

Vahitha moved the apex court challenging Madras High Court judgment, which dismissed her appeal against the judgment of conviction and order of sentence passed on October 15, 2009.

  • Kerala’s lottery man makes luck of the draw his life story, the state is all smiles

Kerala’s lottery man makes luck of the draw his life story, the state is all smiles

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: Last September, 31-year-old Anoop M who won Rs 25 crore in a lottery, was famously heard saying “I wish I had not won.” He said he was hassled by people known and unknown to him asking for financial help. Today, Anoop is a part of the state government’s lottery business and is arguably Kerala’s only crorepati lottery agent.

Anoop, a former auto driver is now busy listing out the serial numbers of the Kerala State Lotteries and contacting prospective clients to sell his tickets.

His sleek iPhone seems stuck to his ear as he is heard interacting with customers in his newly opened lottery retail store ‘M A Lucky Centre’.

Until a few weeks ago, Anoop, winner of the biggest draw in Kerala Lottery history – the Thiruvonam Bumper, was on the run. He was mastering the art of giving the slip to people who sought financial help from him.

He had to constantly shift his place of residence so that needy people would stop crowding his house. As things have calmed down now, his newly won luxurious lifestyle is slowly falling in place.

“Nothing much has changed,” Anoop said while pulling out a bundle of letters and postcards from the cupboard. “I still get countless letters, all asking for financial aid and many still visit my shop asking for help. I am tired,” Anoop, sporting a thick gold bracelet and a thicker gold chain around his neck, told PTI.

Anoop is a glittering microcosm of a Kerala government-owned lottery business which is now creating a millionaire everyday.

The Kerala Lottery department has more than 1 lakh registered agents. Under them there are several unregistered sub-agents and hawkers, effectively making it the livelihood for several lakhs of people in the state.

The total turnover in FY-21 was Rs 7,145.22 crore. Out of that Rs 4,079.28 crore was spent towards prizes, Rs. 1,798.32 crore towards discounts to the agents, and Rs.524.3 crore towards agents’ prizes.

“It is the government’s policy to seek public participation in the government’s social welfare schemes. All the money collected through lottery sales are used for implementing various social welfare schemes of the government,” B T Anil Kumar, publicity officer of the Directorate of State Lotteries, told PTI.

It is not just the Keralites who are keenly purchasing these tickets. The residents of neighboring states and also the sizable migrant labor population in Kerala are regular buyers and many are winners as well.

The ups and downs faced by the state’s lottery winners have even led the lottery directorate to start a training program in financial management for prize winners with the help of the Gulati Institute of Taxation.

“It is the policy of the government to encourage all citizens of this country to be part of the Kerala Lottery. As per the Lottery Act, the tickets can be sold only within the geographical boundaries of Kerala. But anyone who visits the state can purchase a ticket and claim the prize amount by producing the necessary documents and the original of the ticket,” Kumar said.

With a growing customer base, many are now looking to sell lottery tickets as their main occupation.

“I need to pay my house rent with this, fund the education of my children, take care of my husband who is unwell and also take care of myself. I have been selling lotteries for the last 11 years,” Sathi Kumari, who is a lottery hawker near the Padmanabha Swamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram said.
There are several thousand like Kumari who depend on the money they get from the lottery sales to eke out a living.

According to government statistics, the revenue of a lottery worker has gone up from 8.4 percent of ticket sales and commission from prize money per draw in 2019 to 10.69 percent in 2022. “We now have a lottery for all the days of the week, so the revenue of the lottery workers has also gone up. We have also increased the number of tickets available for sale,” Anil Kumar said.

The government also runs a welfare fund for lottery agents and sellers. One percent of the total revenue turnover is earmarked for this fund, which is being used for providing financial assistance for the treatment of the members, providing tri-scooter or beach umbrellas for physically challenged members, and also providing an Onam allowance to all the members. In the last six years, more than Rs 200 crore has been disbursed to the members through this welfare scheme.

Kerala’s state-owned lottery system was launched during the second term of the EMS Namboodiripad government in 1967, with an aim to boost state revenue and also to provide a stable income model for the unemployed and differently-abled persons. It now has prize money from Rs 100 to Rs 25 crore through its daily and six bumper lotteries.

A comprehensive security system with watermarks, security codes and safety numbers on tickets, ensure safety and prevent counterfeiting, rigging or other malpractices, officials said, adding that the prize money is distributed only after the security wing of the lottery directorate examines the physical ticket for any irregularity.

Lottery is legal in over a dozen states in India and the remaining states have banned sale of lottery tickets. Despite criticism from some quarters including from Governor Arif Mohammed Khan who had said Kerala was making its poor people spend their earnings on lottery tickets and getting them addicted to alcohol, the state government promoted its lottery business briskly and earned revenues of over Rs 7,000 crore last year.

Gleaming with delight over people like Anoop joining the lottery business, Anil Kumar said “It’s truly inspirational that Anoop thought of becoming a lottery agent. It will inspire other youngsters also to take up lottery selling as a viable livelihood option, despite their financial status.” PTI KPK VPS SA
