  • Snowfall Brings Normal Life To Halt In Kashmir

    [ad_1]

Day Temperature Plunges, MeT Forecasts Decrease In Precipitation

    By Correspondent

Srinagar, Jan 30 (GNS): Snowfall on Monday affected normal life, causing traffic disruptions as well as bringing substantial decrease in day temperature.

The snowfall started late last night in Srinagar, draping the summer capital of J&k in white blanket. Elsewhere also, it started during the same time. The snow accumulation caused traffic disruptions, causing commuters difficulties in reaching their destinations. Lack of adequate traffic on roads added to woes. The authorities in the morning had cleared most of the main roads of snow but the continuous fall kept snow piling up, causing the traffic to slow down across the length and breadth of the Valley.

A MeT department official here told GNS that Srinagar received 29.5cms of snow since overnight till 1730 hours today, Qazigund 22cm, Pahalgam 41.1cm, Kupwara 19.5cm, Kokernag 18.5cm and Gulmarg around 2-ft besides Bhaderwah 5.3cm.

He said there was a substantial drop in the day temperature and all stations in Kashmir recorded far below normal mercury.

Srinagar, he said, recorded maximum of 1.6°C, below 5.9°C than normal, Qazigund 1.6°C (below 5.6°C), Pahalgam 1.0°C (below 1.4°C), Kupwara 1.5°C (5.9°C below), and Gulmarg minus 2.0°C (2.5°C below).

Regarding night temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of minus 0.2°C against minus 2.4°C on the previous night. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 0.8°C for the summer capital.

Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of minus 0.1°C against minus 2.8°C on the previous night and it was 2.5°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 1.4°C against minus 5.6°C on the previous night and it was 4.7°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Kokernag recorded a low of minus 0.8°C against minus 2.7°C on the previous night and it was 1.8°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 4.6°C against minus 7.2°C on the previous night and it was 2.9°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at minus 0.4°C against minus 1.0°C on the previous night and it was above 2.1°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.

Jammu received 8.9mm of rain during the 24 hours and recorded a low of 10.4°C against 7.6°C on the previous night. It was 1.7°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

Banihal received 25.5mm of rain and recorded a low of 0.2°C (above normal by 0.4°C), Batote received 43.6mm and recorded a low of 1.2°C (below normal by 0.5°C), Katra received 17.6mm of rain and recorded a low of 9.0°C (2.1°C above normal) while Bhadarwah received 34.8mm of rain during the time and recorded minimum temperature of minus 0.6°C (0.2°C below normal).

Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 0.6°C and minus 6.8°C respectively, the official said.

When this report was filed, light snowfall was going on at several places but the MeT department said there would be gradual decrease in precipitation from later tonight.

“The weather is likely to be cloudy with light snow and rain at isolated to scattered places on January 31,” he said.

While Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 has ended, a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ has started. It will be followed by a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1.  (GNS)

Hyderabad: Baby loses life to hospital negligence but there is no punitive action

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: One of the most lucrative businesses is in the field of health management.  If you have money or the capacity to raise money open a hospital.  The caliber of the hospital is immaterial.  The owner can make claims about the specialty departments he has and run his or her business without fear of any action from the government.

Because the owner is hand in glove with the inspecting authorities who shut their eyes to areas that are of utmost importance for the lives of the patients.

We have come across with an incident that had a chilling effect on our spine.

A few weeks ago a pregnant woman was taken to a well-known hospital in Nanal Nagar.  The doctors taking care of the patient said that there appears no reason for any worry because the mother and baby inside the womb are in good health.

After a few hours of pains, the woman from the Old City gave birth to a male baby. But there came a shock.  The baby had a weak heart. He needed Level Three treatment. The doctors said the hospital does not have the facilities for that level of treatment.  They could treat up to Level One deficiency at the hospital.

Announcing this the doctors should have offered an alternative medical facility but they did not. The father said he was ready to pay for whatever expenses required.

But the hospital left the father to fend for himself.  He ran from pillar to post to make arrangements for an ambulance to take the baby to the hospital identified by the doctors. There were three ambulances parked in the hospital.  If the doctors had taken interest they could have immediately arranged an ambulance.  But they said it was the responsibility of the father to find the vehicle and take the baby.

When the father went to get the ambulance, he was shocked to know that none of the ambulances have a driver.

On making frantic phone calls and pleading with the management one of the drivers came in about half an hour.

The ambulance did not have the facility required to transport such a critical patient.  However, the patient was taken to a hospital in Banjara Hills area where the father was informed that he has brought a dead baby.

There was ruckus at the Nanal Nagar hospital when the baby’s lifeless body was taken back to that hospital.  Except for a shouting match between the management and the relatives of the baby nothing came off.

One other strange part of the story is that the baby’s father was made to pay Rs 63,000 before allowing the distraught mother to go home.

While the entire fault lies with the hospital and its management, the father cannot shirk his responsibility.  He did not report the case of utter negligence that time or later against the hospital. He could have gone to the police and also the medical department authorities.

The hospital is still running and maybe minting money daily.

When this writer spoke with the father, he said God had given his child only that much life.  He confessed that he was trying to recover from the tragedy but the condition of his wife still bad.

Is there a way to handle such cases?  Are there any organisations that would take cases of gross negligence and get such hospitals penalized?

5.9-magnitude earthquake jolts Western Nepal, no loss of life reported

    [ad_1]

Kathmandu: A 5.9-magnitude earthquake jolted Western Nepal on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

The earthquake, with epicentre in the Mela area of Bajura district in Sudurpaschim province, hit the region at 2:43 PM local time, Lokvijaya Adhikari, head of the Earthquake Measurement Centre, was quoted as saying by Ekantipur news portal.

There was no immediate report of damage to life or property.

Monika Dahal, head of the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center, said that the quake measuring 5.9-magnitude was felt in the wider areas of Western Nepal. It was also felt in some parts of neighbouring India.

In December 2022, three tremors jolted Western Nepal in quick succession.

In April 2015, a devastating earthquake of 7.8 magnitude rocked Nepal, killing nearly 9,000 people and wounding nearly 22,000 others. It also damaged over 800,000 houses and school buildings.

Pregnant woman credits Apple Watch for saving her life

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: A US-based pregnant woman has credited Apple Watch for saving her and her unborn baby’s lives following an abnormally high heart rate warning.

With a few weeks left until her due date, Jesse Kelly was not doing anything that would raise her heart rate to over 120 beats per minute, but her Apple Watch kept alerting her that her heart rate was high, reports CBS News.

“It went off the first time and I thought it was strange. Then the second time maybe 10 minutes later or so and then the third time maybe a half hour or so later. When it went off the third time I thought ‘OK something is going on,” Kelly was quoted as saying.

She then immediately went to the hospital.

When Kelly arrived at the hospital, she discovered that she was in full-blown labour, her blood pressure was dropping and was losing blood due to a pregnancy complication known as placenta abruption, according to the report.

Three hours later, she was gifted a healthy baby girl named Shelby Marie.

Moreover, speaking from experience, Kelly advised everyone to pay attention to their alerts.

“It’s not just a text message. Pay attention to it and listen to your body,” she said.

Meanwhile, an Apple watch also helped detect undiagnosed heart blockage in a woman.

A woman named Elain Thompson suffered seizures in 2018, and as part of her post-diagnosis treatment, her daughter suggested her to wear an Apple Watch to monitor her health.

Thompson recently received an alert from her Apple Watch that her heart rhythm was unusual.

  • Nadhim Zahawi fights for his political life after admitting tax ‘error’

Nadhim Zahawi fights for his political life after admitting tax ‘error’

    [ad_1]

Nadhim Zahawi was battling to save his political career on Saturday night after he finally admitted reaching a tax settlement with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) following an “error” over a controversial multimillion-pound shareholding in the polling company YouGov.

In a carefully worded statement, Zahawi appeared to confirm that HMRC had carried out an investigation into his financial affairs while he was serving as chancellor last summer. Zahawi, now the Tory party chairman, said that the tax authority had concluded that he had made a “careless but not deliberate” error.

“So that I could focus on my life as a public servant, I chose to settle the matter and pay what they said was due, which was the right thing to do,” he stated. Tax experts said the statement was a tacit acknowledgment that Zahawi had paid a penalty.

The admission raises questions for Rishi Sunak over what he knew about the settlement and when. It comes with the prime minister already under pressure after being fined for not wearing a seatbelt, with MPs also unhappy over his rejection of tax cuts and the government’s allocation of levelling up funds. In an attempt to protect Sunak, Zahawi added: “When I was appointed by the prime minister, all my tax affairs were up to date.”

Zahawi’s tax affairs were thrown into the spotlight last summer when he was appointed chancellor by Boris Johnson, the day before Johnson was forced to resign. The Observer reported that civil servants in the Cabinet Office’s propriety and ethics team had alerted Johnson to an HMRC “flag” over Zahawi before his appointment, but it had been ignored.

Zahawi faced scrutiny on a tranche of shares in YouGov, the polling company he co-founded, which were held by a Gibraltar company, Balshore Investments, and sold for about £27m between 2006 and 2018. It was estimated by the thinktank Tax Policy Associates he may have avoided £3.7m capital gains tax on the sale of these shares.

Saturday’s statement immediately set off new demands for Britain’s most senior civil servant and parliament’s standards commissioner to launch separate investigations into the affair, after questions over whether Zahawi has made the correct declarations to officials and parliament concerning his financial interests.

Zahawi has still not disclosed the size of the HMRC settlement or confirmed he paid a penalty. It follows a Guardian report that he paid about £5m in relation to the sale of shares in YouGov.

Unlike his YouGov co-founder, Stephan Shakespeare, Zahawi took no shares in YouGov. However, a 42.5% shareholding was held by Balshore Investments, an offshore trust controlled by Zahawi’s parents. As YouGov grew in value, Balshore sold all the shares by 2018.

Zahawi said his father took shares “in exchange for some capital and his invaluable guidance”. He added that while HMRC agreed that his father was entitled to shares, it “disagreed about the exact allocation. They concluded that this was a ‘careless and not deliberate’ error.”

Zahawi said HMRC had agreed he had never set up an offshore structure, including Balshore Investments, and that “I am not the beneficiary of Balshore Investments”. When asked on Saturday night, his team would not comment on whether he had ever benefited from Balshore Investments in the past.

Dan Neidle, a tax lawyer and founder of Tax Policy Associates, said: “When I first reported this, he denied it, threatened to sue me and said throughout his tax affairs were in order. It is a disgrace.”

Opposition parties are now demanding the publication of all of Zahawi’s correspondence with HMRC. They are also calling for independent investigations into whether Zahawi made the necessary declarations to officials and parliament.

Simon Case, the cabinet secretary, is facing calls to oversee an investigation into whether Zahawi should have declared any links relating to YouGov or Balshore under the ministerial code. The Liberal Democrats’ deputy leader, Daisy Cooper, has written to Case, calling for his intervention.

Cooper said: “Zahawi and his Conservative cabinet colleagues are arrogantly trying to brush this under the carpet. There are facts that still need to be established so there must be an independent investigation to get to the bottom of this. The British public has lost all faith in Conservative ministers to tell the truth after years of scandal.”

Meanwhile, Labour has also written to Daniel Greenberg, the new parliamentary commissioner for standards, asking whether Zahawi should have declared Balshore Investments in the public register of members’ interests.

Anneliese Dodds, the Labour chair, said Zahawi’s new remarks raised more questions. “This carefully worded statement blows a hole in Nadhim Zahawi’s previous accounts of this murky affair,” she said. “He must now publish all correspondence with HMRC so we can get the full picture. In the middle of the biggest cost of living crisis in a generation, the public will rightly be astonished that anyone could claim that failing to pay millions of pounds worth of tax is a simple matter of ‘carelessness’.”

She added: “Nadhim Zahawi still needs to explain when he became aware of the investigation, and if he was chancellor and in charge of our tax system at the time.”

Several senior ministers have defended Zahawi, including the prime minister. At prime minister’s questions on Wednesday, Sunak said Zahawi had “already addressed this matter in full and there’s nothing more that I can add”.

  • With Roe gone, abortion opponents at March for Life take aim at next targets

With Roe gone, abortion opponents at March for Life take aim at next targets

    [ad_1]

While the National Park Service declined to estimate the crowd size, and March for Life organizers did not respond to questions about attendance, there was a palpable sense of relief among anti-abortion leaders as they looked out at a sea of faces packed onto the National Mall.

“I’ve got to tell you, I was a little nervous. I was concerned that people wouldn’t continue the fight,” former Pennsylvania senator and Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, a staunch abortion opponent, told POLITICO. “But based on this reaction, it looks like the grassroots has not moved on.”

Abortion opponents are counting on that energy to compel state and federal lawmakers to pass laws further restricting abortion. Since Roe fell, abortion access has been virtually eliminated in a quarter of the country, and several speakers told the enthusiastic crowd on the National Mall on Friday that those bans are just the beginning.

Overturning Roe “was only the first phase of this battle,” House Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), the highest-ranking elected official to speak at the March, said to cheers. “Now the next phase begins.”

Scalise was one of the few prominent Republicans to attend. While the March in previous years featured appearances by Presidents Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and many other conservative officials hoping to prove their anti-abortion bona fides, none of the Republicans who have signaled an interest in running for president in 2024 appeared on stage on Friday. Neither did the top Republicans in the House or Senate — Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell — or any Republican governor.

Anti-abortion leaders waved away questions about the lack of participation from the top ranks of the GOP, arguing that the march is “issue-central” and “not a political event,” and pointing to Congress being out of session that day and members being back in their home districts.

While cognizant that federal restrictions on the procedure won’t become law with Democrats in charge of the Senate and White House, conservative activists plan to push the new GOP House majority to take more votes on anti-abortion bills. And to illustrate that new focus, the route of Friday’s March shifted for the first time to pass by the Capitol as well as the Supreme Court.

“One, two, three, four, Roe v. Wade is out the door,” chanted a gaggle of teens wearing matching knit beanies as the March wound its way down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the House and Senate. “Five, six, seven, eight, now it’s time to legislate.”

But while Republicans in the House took multiple anti-abortion votes as some of their first actions in the majority this month, they were on a non-binding resolution condemning violence against anti-abortion organizations and a bill reaffirming the rights of infants born after attempted abortions. Leadership has not scheduled votes on the more controversial measures groups are demanding, such as a federal ban on abortion at 15 weeks, which Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) proposed last year. And some House Republicans have spoken out against their leaders’ decision to tackle the issue at all, pointing to the 2022 midterm results as a sign voters will continue to punish the party if they pursue more restrictions.

Anti-abortion leaders at the March said their coming efforts will focus largely on states. Groups like Susan B. Anthony are hiring more staff to lobby state legislatures, fueled by what they say has been a spike in donations, and are particularly targeting Florida, Nebraska, North Carolina, and Virginia. They’re also planning more state-level demonstrations to pressure lawmakers, doubling the number of marches held outside D.C. from five last year to 10 in 2023.

“What an exciting time for us all to be rallying together right now,” Louisiana Attorney General Lynn Fitch told POLITICO after she addressed the crowd. “But now we have to think next steps.”

Fitch said that, along with other Republican attorneys general, she’s petitioning the FDA to reimpose restrictions the agency recently lifted on abortion pills, which have allowed them to be mailed to patients or picked up at pharmacies. She is also joining with others in the anti-abortion movement to push for policies like affordable child care and reforms to the adoption and foster care system — supports they feel are necessary to meet the needs of the many people that will be unable to access an abortion in the coming years.

But while anti-abortion leaders say they feel wind at their backs as state legislatures reconvene this month and debate a swath of new restrictions on the procedure, many challenges lie ahead at both the state and federal level.

Lawmakers in several liberal states have introduced bills that would shield patients traveling for the procedure and the doctors who treat them from prosecution. And several more states are preparing to put constitutional amendments that protect abortion rights before voters following victories in six states last year — California, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana and Vermont.

“I think those ballot initiatives were a wake-up call that 50 years of work can be wiped out in a second unless you’re ready to go with a real battle plan,” Dannenfelser said in an interview, adding that her organization and others have to “up our funding game” after getting massively outspent by abortion-rights supporters in those state contests in 2022.

Anti-abortion groups are also working to shape the 2024 election, and have already begun meeting with prospective presidential candidates to press them to endorse and run on national abortion restrictions. But they’ve recently feuded with the only officially declared GOP candidate who leads in polls: former President Trump.

Earlier in January, Trump blamed anti-abortion groups for the midterms results in a social media post, specifically hitting them for opposing exemptions for cases of rape and incest and alleging that after winning the Supreme Court decision against Roe they “just plain disappeared, not to be seen again” and didn’t work hard enough to get voters to the polls in November.

Anti-abortion leaders called the accusation “way out of line” and “nonsense” and said Trump “needs to be corrected.”
