    Srinagar Leh Highway Shut Down By Snow Avalanche

    SRINAGAR: The Srinagar Leh highway was closed for traffic on Monday afternoon after a snow avalanche blocked the road near Cafeteria Morh in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.

    A Beacon official informed that the SSG road is blocked due to a snow avalanche near Cafeteria Morh. Meanwhile, several vehicles are stranded in the Sonamarg area after the road got closed.

    An official said that men and machinery have been pressed into service to clear the road. (KNO)

  • Ahead Of G-20 Event, 100 Delegates From 30 Countries To Attend Y-20 Summit In Ladakh

    SRINAGAR: More than 100 Y-20 delegates from over 30 countries arrived in the Union Territory of Ladakh on Tuesday while as the J&K administration said that it has made elaborate arrangements to make the G-20 meeting schedules in Srinagar a grand success.

    Addressing media persons, the administration has said that till Tuesday, over 100 Y20 delegates from over 30 countries have arrived in Ladakh while a few more are expected to arrive by Wednesday morning.

    The officials said that as G20 is being conducted under India’s presidency under the theme of One World One family one future, they have put forward priorities of youth as they (youth) are very much concerned about their future.

    “The administration since the last three months has been preparing for the event and overseeing how we can make this programme a grand success,” they said, adding that in this regard, various activities have been held so far.

    Pertinently, Ladakh is hosting a three-day youth 20 pre-summit under the aegis of the G-20.

    The delegates were welcomed by the senior officers of the UT administration. During the three-day summit, there will be discussions and deliberations on different important topics, reports said.

    On the first day of the summit, the delegates will visit local places of importance including Hemis and Thicksey monasteries and Shanti Stupa. On the following day, LG Ladakh Dr. B. D. Mishra will address the delegates at the Sindu Sanskriti Auditorium.

    On the third day of the pre-summit, Union Minister Anurag Thakur will interact with the delegates and also participate in a youth dialogue. As per the UT administration officials, sufficient security measures and other arrangements are in place for the smooth conduct of the program.

    The Y20 pre-summit in Ladakh will be a valuable opportunity for the global youth to reflect on priority areas in consultation with G-20 member states to come up with policy recommendations that will prove beneficial to the Ladakh region.

    Leh, Apr 1: Police have arrested a 52-year-old man for allegedly raping a minor girl in Leh Division of Ladakh.

    Both Muslim and Buddhist organizations have condemned the gory incident and demanded strict punishment for the alleged rapist.

    The 12-year-old girl (name withheld) was raped by the man on 29 March last month while the accused who was on a run, was arrested by the police today.

    A police official identified the rapist as Sayyad Zulfikar Ali Shah. He said that an FIR vide number 2/2023 under section 5(M) and 6 POCSO Act at Women Police Station Leh stands registered in this regard.

    SP Leh, PD Nitya informed that the accused offered the girl lift to school and took her to a secluded place, and raped her.

    “The girl also suffered a head injury and the accused left her thinking she was dead. Within 48 hours, we arrested the accused,” she said adding the condition of the victim is stable.

    Almost all the political, and socio-religious organizations have condemned the incident and sought severe punishment for the accused.

    Pertinently, in a hamlet of Leh, last year in August, a lady was raped and murdered by an accused namely 32-year-old Rigzin Dawa against whom police an FIR vide number 149/2022 under section 302, 376 stands registered at Police Station Leh. [KNT]

  • Leh Resident Hangs Self To Death In Srinagar

    SRINAGAR: A man from Leh allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself to death at a local hotel in summer capital Srinagar on Friday.

    An official said that a man identified as Youtan Kunskyap son of Rinchan Nurboo, a resident of Benzom house Sakti in Leh UT allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself to death at a local hotel here.

    The body was shifted to SMHS hospital where medico legal formalities are being conducted, he said.

    The reason behind his action could not be ascertained immediately, the official said adding, that proceedings have been launched in this regard. (KDC)

    SRINAGAR: Srinagar-Leh national highway was closed, while several houses and a cowshed were damaged due a landslide in Rezin area of Sonamarg in central Kashmir Ganderbal district on Sunday evening.

    Quoting an official the news agency KNO reported that the landslide triggered by heavy rainfall caused massive damage to houses and a cowshed and also blocked the Leh highway.

    He said that officials were assessing the situation and taking steps to provide assistance to the affected people.

    Meanwhile, in a statement, district administration said a landslide triggered at Rezin, leading to blockage of the highway.

    “Some houses have been damaged by slide, however, no loss of life or injury had been reported. Area has been cleared, and residents of the affected area have been moved to safer places,” reads the statement.

    It reads rescue teams and senior officers are also present on the spot and monitoring the situation closely.

    “The highway will be cleared with the help of Beacon authorities. For any emergency or information, please contact these numbers 9906668731, 9419371774, 9541786731, 0194-2416478 and 0194-2416564,” it reads.
