Senate Republicans will stand firm on debt ceiling, Mike Lee says

The letter, which was sent to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, said Senate Republicans backed House Republicans in supporting “spending cuts and structural budget reform as a starting point for negotiations on the debt ceiling.”

Democrats have a slim majority in the Senate but not enough to prevent a Republican filibuster on legislation.

“Whenever you’ve got 41 senators who are unwilling to bring debate to a close on any legislation, it cannot pass. We’ve now got more than enough to stop exactly the kind of legislation that Joe Biden wants,” he said to Bartiromo.

Lee added: “What that means is that the White House is going to come to the table and enter into real talks with the House Republicans, starting with Speaker Kevin McCarthy,” Lee said.

House Republicans passed legislation on April 24 that would allow for the debt ceiling to be raised but which would also attempt to put the brakes on federal spending in the future, as well as roll back or cut specific programs. The vote was 217-215.

Biden and other Democrats have said they are open to budget negotiations but want the debt ceiling treated as a separate issue, as it has been in the past. The expectation is that the the federal government will bump up against the debt ceiling at the start of June.

Bartiromo asked Lee if he was confident that McConnell and other Senate Republicans would stand firm. Lee said he expected they would.

“Even if we lost one or two here or there, we’d still be fine,” Lee said, “and I don’t think we’re going to the lose any of them.”

San Francisco Board President Aaron Peskin announced the suspect’s arrest in Emeryville, a San Francisco suburb.

Police found Lee with stab wounds in the Rincon Hill neighborhood of San Francisco at 2:30 a.m. April 4. He died at a hospital.

Lee is known for creating the widely used mobile payment service Cash App while working as chief technology officer of the payment company Square, now known as Block. He was the chief product officer for the cryptocurrency firm MobileCoin at the time of his death.

On his LinkedIn profile, Momeni describes himself as an “IT Consultant/Entrepreneur” as well as “owner” at a company called Expand IT.

It was not immediately clear whether Momeni has an attorney who can speak on his behalf.

“I hope today’s arrest can begin a process of healing and closure for all those touched by this tragedy,” Matt Dorsey, another San Francisco supervisor, tweeted Thursday morning.

Prominent tech leaders took to social media to mourn Lee’s death and blame San Francisco for what they call the city’s lax attitude toward crime. Scott and Jenkins pushed back against that narrative on Thursday, with the prosecutor specifically naming tech billionaire Elon Musk for commenting on the case.

“This doesn’t have to do with San Francisco, this has to do with human nature,” Scott said.

Mission Local first reported Momeni’s arrest.

Bob Lee, founder of Cash App and the former chief technology officer of Square, died Tuesday in San Francisco.

The San Francisco Chronicle and other outlets reported 43-year-old Lee died after being fatally stabbed early Tuesday morning, citing unnamed sources and police.

MobileCoin, a cryptocurrency and digital payments startup where Lee had been serving as chief product officer since 2021, issued a statement confirming Lee’s death without naming a cause.

“Our dear friend and colleague, Bob Lee passed away yesterday at the age of 43, survived by a loving family and collection of close friends and collaborators,” said Josh Goldbard, CEO of MobileCoin. “Bob was a dynamo, a force of nature. Bob was the genuine article.”

The San Francisco Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The department said in a Tuesday evening statement that officers responded earlier that morning to a report of a stabbing and found a 43-year-old male victim, who was taken to a hospital and succumbed to his injuries there. The report did not identify the victim and stated that no arrests have been made in the case.

Ro Khanna endorses Barbara Lee for Senate in California

“We need a strong anti-war senator, and she will play that role,” he said.

Lee is facing off against fellow Reps. Katie Porter and Adam Schiff, who have each already picked up key endorsements, from Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), respectively. As a leader in the House Progressive Caucus, Khanna’s endorsement could help Lee shore up progressive support in what’s expected to be a competitive — and expensive — race.

“I have respect for them,” Khanna said of Porter and Schiff, “but Barbara Lee is a unique voice. She was the lone vote against the endless war in Afghanistan. She stood up so strongly against the war in Iraq. She worked with me and stopping — trying to stop the war in Yemen and the war powers resolution.”

Khanna also noted that there are currently no African American women in the Senate, and Lee would fill that void. “Frankly, Jake, representation matters,” Khanna told CNN’s Jake Tapper.

“The other two are formidable candidates, but I think Barbara Lee is going to be very, very strong.”

Feinstein, the longest-serving woman in Senate history, announced her plans to forgo a 2024 bid last month. The 89-year-old’s retirement was widely expected, so much so that Porter and Schiff both launched their campaigns before she officially bowed out (though Schiff said his run was predicated on Feinstein’s retirement.)

California’s primary system allows the top two vote-getters to advance to the general election regardless of party, a system that’s likely to pit two Democrats against each other in November 2024 in a solidly blue state.
