  • Kashmir’s AIIMS Scientist Leads Major Cancer Breakthrough

    [ad_1]

    by Faiqa Masoodi

SRINAGAR: In a major breakthrough, a Kashmiri scientist along with a group of European scientists has discovered a new potential drug for the treatment of metastatic hypoxic cancers. The drug is currently in an advanced stage of further investigations post-animal trials.

    Dr Musadir Nabi Peerzada
    Dr Musadir Nabi Peerzada (AIIMS)

Hailing from Muqami Shahwali in Kupwara’s Drugmulla belt, Dr Mudasir Nabi Peerzada led a team of eminent European scientists and co-workers to discover a new drug for the treatment of various metastatic hypoxic cancers.

Dr Peerzada who is currently working as a C-Level scientist at AIIMS New Delhi, has completed his postdoctoral training at the National Institute of Pathology. He was awarded a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of health research, Government of India.

The discovery is believed to help in silencing the HIF-1 factor-controlled human CAIX and CAXII activity in cancerous cells. The hCAIX and hCAXII are overexpressed in the renal, pancreatic, gut, oral, brain, lung, and ovarian cancers, therefore the drug could be significant in treating multiple cancers with greater efficacy.

Dr Mudasir said that he and his team strenuous efforts for many years to make this path-breaking discovery. The drug has shown satisfactory results in various tumour models and is currently undergoing advanced investigations.

“This discovery took us years of tests and trials. We tested it on animals before going ahead,” Dr Peerzada said, adding that the drug is undergoing advanced clinical trials for further investigation.

The study was published in ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters entitled Discovery of Novel Hydroxyimine-Tethered Benzenesulfonamides as Potential Human Carbonic Anhydrase IX/XII Inhibitors was published on May 8, 2023.

He said that the new findings are remarkable in curing hypoxic cancers and will be a boon for cancer-related research.

The other scientists who are part of this invention include Dr Alessandro Bonardi, Dr Niccolò Paoletti, Dr Daniela Vullo, Dr Paola Gratteri, Dr Claudiu T Supuran, and Dr Amir Azam

Dr Peerzada is working on the development of anti-cancer therapeutics discovery taking into account the ATP binding site of kinases, hCAIX, hCAXII activity, cycle arrest at the G2/M phase of mitosis, prevention of HER2 dimerisation to deregulate PI3K/AKT and MAPK cell signalling pathways.

Tarigami Leads Protest For Minimum Wages, Worker Regularisation

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, a leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), took to the streets on Monday in Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital to lead a protest on the occasion of International Labour Day. Tarigami’s demonstration called for the implementation of the Minimum Wages Act in its true spirit while also demanding the abolition of the contractual system of employment.

According to Tarigami, workers employed on a contractual or daily wage basis in the Integrated Child Development Scheme and the National Health Mission were being denied their right to basic minimum wages. He stated that “Our demand is that minimum fixed wages be given to every worker as set by the labour conference.”

After leading the protest at Residency Road, Tarigami spoke with reporters, reiterating his stance and emphasizing the importance of fair wages for all workers. He said, “Our demand is to implement the Minimum Wages Act in letter and spirit, so that the contractual system of employment is abolished, and every worker gets the minimum fixed wages as set by the labour conference.”

Tarigami also drew attention to the long history of struggles against labour exploitation in Kashmir, pointing out that “In Zaldagar Kashmir, labourers had protested for their rights even before the May Day protests in Chicago in 1886. Workers here had fought against the taxes imposed by the then government.”

  • Si Jiahui leads Brecel in Crucible semi-final while Allen puts heat on Selby

Si Jiahui leads Brecel in Crucible semi-final while Allen puts heat on Selby

    [ad_1]

Chinese youngster Si Jiahui leads Luca Brecel 5-3 at the end of an intriguing first session of their world championship semi-final.

The 20-year-old, the first debutant to reach the last four since Andy Hicks in 1995, lost the first frame, but produced back-to-back clearances of 125, 102 and 97 to punish Brecel for errors with a near-faultless display of break building. However the Belgian, who beat seven-time champion Ronnie O’Sullivan in the last eight, scrapped his way back to 4-3 before succumbing in a nail-biting conclusion to the afternoon’s play.

In a scrappy start, Brecel enjoyed the benefit of an outrageous fluke when he rattled the pink in the jaws and saw the ball run the length of the table down the cushion before dropping in. He went on to make 50 before missing the blue off its spot although Si – the youngest semi-finalist at the tournament since O’Sullivan in 1996 – was unable to prevent him from going ahead.

However, the youngster announced himself in style in the second frame, sinking a tough red to get in before compiling an imperious 125 break. And he repeated the feat to take a 2-1 lead when, after Brecel had missed the yellow at 33-0, he cleared the table once again.

Si eased himself 3-1 in front at the mid-session interval after an arm-wrestle in the fourth frame with both players twice missing difficult reds to the middle pockets before he prevailed 103-29 courtesy of a break of 97. The world No 80 stuttered briefly, missing a regulation red as he applied right-hand side to the cue-ball in an effort to develop the pack after Brecel had erred once again, but eventually tied up an untidy fifth frame 103-3.

Si’s first error of note arrived in the next when, 53 points into another seemingly decisive break, he jawed the black to allow his opponent to the table, and Brecel’s break of 72 stopped the rot.

Having benefited from a mistake, Brecel handed it back almost immediately, following up a good long red with a careless blue, but the Chinese player was equally profligate, leaving himself unable to see a colour as he attempted to develop the pack before taking seven attempts to hit the nominated brown. A second snooker and three more misses yielded 12 more points to leave the 28-year-old 38-33 ahead, and he eventually drew back to within one frame of his opponent with a visit of 69.

The final frame of the session unfolded with a sustained safety exchange, but it was Brecel who made the first move with a break of 33 before inexplicably missing the pink – although Si faltered at 43-34. Brecel then rattled a pink towards the top pocket which, had it gone in, would have levelled the match at 4-4, but it rolled agonisingly over left-middle, allowing the younger man to go two in front again.

Mark Allen finished the opening stanza of the other semi-final against Mark Selby on a roll, winning the final three frames to lead 5-3 overnight.

A 123 clearance gave Selby the ideal start but uncharacteristic errors in the safety battles in the next two frames allowed his Northern Irish opponent to take control with breaks of 63 and 66. Selby missed a black off its spot in the fourth frame but still went into the mid-session interval level at 2-2 as it was Allen’s turn to fluff his lines in a tactical exchange.

    skip past newsletter promotion

A break of 68 moved Selby into the lead in an ebb-and-flow session and while Allen levelled, there was a hint of controversy when replays showed he grazed the red he was bridging over to make a tough pot. The referee did not spot the foul while Allen did not acknowledge it either so – with players so scrupulous in calling to attention any wrongdoing when they are at the table – the suggestion was the left-hander, who has won three ranking events this season, was oblivious to what he had done.

Selby did have a visit to the table thereafter but his rival’s break of 64 left him well adrift and Allen quickly wrapped up the frame. Allen then finished the session with breaks of 60 and 78 to seize the initiative.

SRINAGAR: Chief Secretary, Dr Arun Kumar Mehta expressed confidence that India is more than capable of achieving its goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2070 and said that it is high time we shifted away from fossil fuels and made alternate sources our main energy providers.

He was speaking at a workshop  organised by the Jammu & Kashmir Pollution Control Committee here at the Convention Centre.

The interactive workshop on ‘Climate Change Mitigation and Green Financing for a Climate Resilient and Carbon Neutral J&K’ was attended by Dr.Mohit Gera, PCCF (HoFF), J&K Forest Department and Chairman, J&K Pollution Control Committee; Dr. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice Chancellor, Islamic University, Kashmir; HoDs of Forest Department, Dr. Ravindranath, renowned IPCC Author, and resource persons from MoEFCC, TERI, Earnest and Young Climate, World Resources Institute of India besides other eminent guests and environment experts.

Dr Mehta appreciated the efforts of the Pollution Control Committee and Jammu & Kashmir Forest Department for organizing deliberations on Net Zero Carbon by 2070. He informed that J&K has already made a model by developing a climate resilient and carbon neutral Panchayat of village Palliin District Samba which is first of its kind in the country.

According to Dr Mehta, Jammu & Kashmir has always been at the forefront of adopting flagship developmental schemes of the government.

‘The distinction of implementing the 75 Amrit Sarovars in each district amongst first in the entire country is a good example of how well J&K can adapt to the needs of the times with cooperation from its citizens. Similarly, schemes like “Har Gaon Hariyali”, “One Beat Guard, One village Program”, “Van Se Jal, Jal Se Jeevan” have been very effective in building in resilience and adaptation at village level.

J&K has been a leader in adopting transformative steps in the overhaul of sports, agriculture, and tourism sectors in recent years. The Chief Secretary stated that we are planting more trees every year than ever before and this year over one and half crore trees are going to be planted again all over J&K.

In terms of health infrastructure, Jammu & Kashmir ranks among the leading states of India. The Har Ghar Nal Se Jal scheme will also be fully implemented by the end of this financial year, he continued. The scheme aims to mitigate water supply challenges for the coming 50 years at least, in view of climate change.

The Chief Secretary stressed the importance of communicating climate change adaptation measures to the masses in a way that creates a genuine connection with them. To achieve this goal, the Chief Secretary emphasized the need to communicate with the public at all levels, including panchayats, in ways that creates public ownership.

DCW’s surprise inspection leads to seizure of 50 lt acid from public toilet in Delhi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In a surprise inspection conducted by the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) led by its chief Swati Maliwal, officials have seized around 50 litres of acid from a public toilet located opposite the G.B. Pant Hospital in central Delhi.

The operation was carried out on Thursday and the officials confirmed the seizure of the acid on Friday.

Maliwal has now asked the concerned officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to appear before the commission on April 11 with a detailed report on the matter.

    MS Education Academy

“I was shocked to discover huge quantities of acid kept in the open at a public toilet in Delhi. It could have been used by people for criminal activities. The fact that acid is being used in public toilets for cleaning purposes on a large scale is unacceptable and shameful,” said Maliwal.

“Strict action should be taken against the authorities for encouraging the use of acid for cleaning in toilets. Also, there should be no fee for using public toilets. All the toilets should be functional at all times, and if any toilet is non-functional, strict action should be taken against the official(s) responsible for it,” she added.

During the inspection on Thursday, the commission had noticed that Rs 10 was being charged from the users each time they used the toilet.

“The commission was also informed that the toilet closes down at 10 p.m., rendering women and girls vulnerable to open defecation,” said a DCW official.

House Democrat leads rally backing Manhattan DA’s Trump probe

    [ad_1]

NEW YORK — A House Democrat stepped into the fray around Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s investigation of Donald Trump, holding a rally in support of the progressive prosecutor Monday after his Republican counterparts demanded information about the probe.

“We are here to say let the process continue and no one is above the law, not even a president of the United States,” said Rep. Adriano Espaillat, who represents Upper Manhattan, at a Harlem rally attended by a dozen other local Democratic leaders.

On Saturday Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), James Comer (R-Ky.) and Bryan Steil (R-Wis.) — the chairs of the Judiciary, Oversight and Administration Committees, respectively — sent a letter to Bragg setting a March 31 deadline for documents from his office about possible federal funding or involvement in his work. They also want Bragg to testify in private. The asks are voluntary since the Republican leaders have not issued a subpoena.

Hyderabad: Exam fear leads Inter 1st-year student to kill self in Narsingi

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In yet another incident of student suicide, a boy studying in his intermediate first year was found hanging in his house at Narsingi on Friday evening.

Narsingi police, who suspected that the boy dies by suicide, held that the fear of exams made him take the extreme step.

Sai Teja was studying MPC first year in a private junior college and stayed with his family at Manchirevula in Narsingi while he was in the middle of preparations for the ongoing intermediate exams.

On Friday, the family members of the boy grew suspicious after they returned home in the evening and received no response from Teja’s room even after repeatedly knocking on the door.

They finally resorted to forcibly open the door and discovered Sai Teja dead.

Police reached the location and shifted the body to the Osmania General Hospital for an autopsy.

It was further revealed by the cops that the kin of the deceased raised no suspicion about his death and held that he was a good student.

“However, he was quite competitive and would not take low scores in his exams and become upset easily,” said his family members.

Police have initiated a probe into the matter to unveil the reason behind the boy’s death.

  • India to cross $10 bn worth mobile exports in FY22-23, Apple leads at 50%

India to cross $10 bn worth mobile exports in FY22-23, Apple leads at 50%

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Buoyed by attractive government incentives towards local manufacturing, India is all set to reach a remarkable $10 billion (over Rs 82,000 crore) worth smartphone exports in the fiscal year ending March 31, industry data showed on Wednesday.

According to the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), Apple’s ‘Make in India’ smartphone now constitute 50 per cent of total exports.

Samsung is second with 40 per cent mobile exports while other smartphone players constitute 10 per cent export share.

Smartphone exports from India have doubled from a corresponding period from last fiscal year, driven by production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes.

The top five global destinations India currently exports mobile phones to are the UAE, the US, the Netherlands, the UK and Italy, according to the ICEA data.

“Efficacy and maturity of an industry is only judged with robust exports. Mobile phones policy and outreach initiatives have been relentless and the results are in front of us,” Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of ICEA, told IANS.

“The mobile phone industry will cross $40 billion manufacturing output and 25 per cent exports at $10 billion is a stellar performance,” he added.

Reports surfaced earlier this year that Tim Cook-led Apple will quickly shift some of its China manufacturing to India and Vietnam in the next 2-3 years.

India is likely to produce 45-50 per cent of Apple’s iPhones by 2027, at par with China, where 80-85 per cent of iPhones were produced in 2022.

According to estimates by DigiTimes research analysts, India and Vietnam are to become the biggest beneficiaries of smartphone supply chain migration out of China.

India accounted for 10-15 per cent of iPhones’ overall production capacity at the end of 2022.

Apple became the first smartphone player in India to have exported $1 billion worth iPhones in the month of December. It currently manufactures iPhones 12, 13, 14 and 14 Plus in the country.

According to Mohindroo, the country is now moving in a different direction, “which is largely export-focused and led by the government’s performance-linked scheme (PLI) push”.

The government is also working to strengthen the electronic manufacturing ecosystem beyond mobiles to boost its global share in hearables and wearables, IT hardware and electronic components etc.
