World leaders welcome Saudi-Iran deal to resume diplomatic ties

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: World leaders have welcomed the announcement that Saudi Arabia and Iran have reached an agreement to resume diplomatic relations which were severed in 2016.

The decision to re-establish relations came following talks that took place from March 6-10 in Beijing, reports Al Arabiya.

The announcement, which was made on Friday in a joint statement with China, has been welcomed across the globe as a victory for peace and dialogue.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the agreement.

The French Foreign Ministry also said in a statement that the Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna supports dialogue and any initiative that can make a tangible contribution to calming tensions and strengthening regional security and stability.

Jordan on Friday welcomed the trilateral statement issued by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Iran, and China on resuming diplomatic relations, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in Amman expressing hope that this agreement would contribute to enhancing security and stability in the region, in a way that preserves the sovereignty of states while avoiding interference in their internal affairs, and serves common interests, Al Arabiya reported.

Pakistan said that it firmly believes that this important diplomatic breakthrough will contribute to peace and stability in the region and beyond.

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs also affirmed the country support for this agreement, hoping that it would contribute to strengthening the pillars of security and stability in the region.

The Kingdom of Bahrain also welcomed the agreement. The Ministry also expressed hope that this agreement would constitute a positive step on the road to resolving differences and ending all regional conflicts through dialogue and diplomatic means.

It praised the leading role of Saudi Arabia in supporting security, peace, and stability, as well as in pursuing diplomacy in settling regional and international disputes.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey also welcomed the agreement.

In a statement, it congratulated the two countries on the agreement, which it said contributes significantly to laying the foundations for security in the region, Al Arabiya reported.

  • Jairam dismisses BRS leader’s hunger strike on women’s bill as ‘diversionary tactics’

Jairam dismisses BRS leader’s hunger strike on women’s bill as ‘diversionary tactics’

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: AICC General Secretary Jairam Ramesh on Friday asked why the Women’s Reservation Bill could not be passed in Lok Sabha over the last nine years despite the BJP having a brute majority.

He also brushed aside BRS MLC K Kavitha’s hunger strike in support of the bill claiming that the move was an attempt to divert attention from the ED summons issued to her.

He recalled that the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed in Rajya Sabha in 2010 due to the efforts of Congress which was in power then.

It was passed in Rajya Sabha first as any bill that is introduced in the Upper House never lapses, he said.

Ramesh added that the Congress had tried to introduce it in Lok Sabha but there was opposition within UPA.

The Congress did not have the requisite majority then and the BJP was also reluctant to support on the issue, he alleged.

“…from 2014, Mr Modi has a brute majority in the Lok Sabha. Now, he does not have to pass it in the Rajya Sabha… It is already passed. TRS (BRS) is supporting him most of the time in Lok Sabha. YSRCP supports him all the time. So, why could the bill not pass in the Lok Sabha in the last nine years,” he said.

“So, to sit in hunger strike today at Jantar Mantar (in Delhi) to divert from other issues which will become relevant tomorrow, these are all diversionary tactics,” he told reporters when asked about the Congress not attending Kavitha’s hunger strike in support of the bill.

A day before her scheduled appearance before the Enforcement Directorate in the Delhi excise policy case, Kavitha led a six-hour long hunger strike in Delhi seeking the passage of the bill in the current Budget session of Parliament.

Ramesh said if the BJP wants to get the bill passed, it can get it done in the Budget session next week, Ramesh said.

Regarding Telangana, Ramesh listed out ‘panch sutras’ (five elements) for the benefit of farmers in the state and assured that the Congress, if voted to power, would address all grievances related to the ‘Dharani’ (integrated land records management system) portal.

Congress also promises land surveys in the state in two years if it comes to power, with the objective that the land owner would be the real owner of the land and the land title is conclusive and not presumptive, he said.

Observing that there are 125 laws related to land and 3,000 Government Orders (GOs) in Telangana over many years, he said Congress would come up with one comprehensive land law which will integrate all the existing 125 land laws and thousands of GOs.

He said no land will be acquired without the permission of the land owner.

Congress would also be extending government benefits like crop insurance to nearly 15 lakh tenant farmers in Telangana, he added.

  • Biden to reveal nuke submarine plans Monday alongside U.K. and Australian leaders

Biden to reveal nuke submarine plans Monday alongside U.K. and Australian leaders

    [ad_1]

    congress dc 52562

Part of the announcement may involve plans to allow U.S. Virginia-class attack submarines to ramp up visits to Australia, or even home port one of the submarines in the country as the work continues on the Australian boats. The first Australian submarine won’t be operational until the late 2030s or early 2040s at the earliest. Officials still must sort through a raft of complicated issues, including how to export nuclear technology to the country, which has no civil or military nuclear programs in the works.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the event has not been officially announced yet. The White House declined to confirm plans.

The allies are expected to detail a path forward on “Pillar One” of the deal, which centers around the submarine design, training to manage the new fleet and all the associated costs. Reforms to U.S. laws on technology-sharing are required before advancing further to “Pillar Two,” American officials said.

But the announcement itself will show the progress made by allies to strengthen Australia’s naval capabilities and the three countries’ partnership to counter China’s growing military heft in the Indo-Pacific. The deal was viewed as a win-win-win in each of the three capitals. For Canberra, AUKUS helps Australia scrap its Collins-class fleet of conventionally-powered submarines. London, meanwhile, will see itself play a bigger role in the Indo-Pacific while Washington aids its ally’s military capabilities — sending a signal to Beijing.

“All of this is being undertaken to help make our closest allies more powerful and to convince Beijing that it is no longer operating in a permissive security environment,” said Charles Edel, the Australia chair at the U.S.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank.

By joining AUKUS in 2021, Canberra reneged on a multibillion-dollar nuclear sub agreement with Paris, causing a major diplomatic row that led France to recall its ambassador to the U.S.

Biden spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron Tuesday in part about “shared efforts to address challenges posed by the People’s Republic of China to the rules-based international order,” per a White House readout.

Bloomberg News first reported on the planned announcement.

  • TN: BJP in soup as it loses 13 of its leaders to alliance partner AIADMK

TN: BJP in soup as it loses 13 of its leaders to alliance partner AIADMK

    [ad_1]

Chennai: A total of 13 functionaries from Tamil Nadu’s BJP on Wednesday quit the party to join its alliance partner the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

The 13 belonged to the BJP’s IT wing in Chennai West.

The development comes as the State unit of the BJP accused the Edappadi Palaniswami-led AIADMK of allegedly “poaching” its leaders.

BJP IT Wing District president Anbarasan in a statement said, “I have worked for BJP for years. People know that I have never expected any position. Considering the unusual scenario in the party for the past few days I have decided to resign from the party.”

The statement bears the signatures of 10 IT Wing District Secretaries and two IT Wing District Deputy Secretaries.

Several BJP MLAs have resigned and joined AIADMK recently.

On Tuesday, BJP Intellectual Wing State Secretary Krishnan, IT wing State secretary Dileep Kannan, Trichy Rural District Vice President Vijay and State OBC Wing Secretary Ammu joined AIADMK after meeting with Edappadi K Palaniswami.

This came just days after the exit of BJP State IT Wing Chief Nirmal Kumar to AIADMK who quit the party levelling serious allegations against Annamalai.

Similarly, IT Wing State Secretary Krishnan also resigned from BJP blaming Annamalai. This has sparked a war of words on social media between supporters of AIADMK and the BJP.

BJP functionaries raised questions about how Edappadi Palaniswami can welcome them with a smile by being an alliance partner.

In one such Twitter post, BJP Sports and Skill Development State President Amar Prasad Reddy mentioned “AIADMK being an alliance partner shouldn’t have done this”.

Meanwhile, earlier Annamalai told ANI, “Some four BJP leaders have joined, it’s an unfortunate state in Tamil Nadu where Dravidian politicians who think that they run big parties want to poach from BJP and grow their party. That only shows BJP is growing”.

Reacting to Annamalai’s comments AIADMK IT Wing Secretary Singai Ramachandran retorted on Twitter, “Once BJP was getting votes lesser than NOTA. In the 2021 election, how BJP MLAs won the election is the answer for this (AIADMK – BJP faced the election as allies). AIADMK is the organization which won the election single-handedly. It is only a joke to say to develop AIADMK, BJP persons are needed”.

Even during the Erode East bypoll, there was a war of words between AIADMK and BJP with AIADMK passing comments saying the BJP doesn’t have a role in inter-party issues. Now once again it has become debatable.

  • BJP leaders using Pulwama widows to gain political mileage, says Rajasthan CM

BJP leaders using Pulwama widows to gain political mileage, says Rajasthan CM

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday targeted the BJP, saying some of its leaders were disrespecting the widows of martyrs and using them to gain political mileage.

This comes a day after relatives of three CRPF personnel killed in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack reached Congress leader Sachin Pilot’s residence and demanded a meeting with the party high command, accusing the state government of not fulfilling promises made to them.

Without directly naming BJP Rajya Sabha MP Kirodi Lal Meena, who has been sitting on a ‘dharna’ with the widows of the martyrs, Gehlot said in a statement, “Some BJP leaders are disrespecting the wives of the martyrs by using them to gain political mileage. This has never been the tradition of Rajasthan. I condemn it.”/

The widows’ demands include installing statues of the slain jawans, giving jobs to their relatives on compassionate grounds and construction of roads in their villages.

In his statement, Gehlot said the widow of Hemraj Meena, who was martyred in the attack, wants a third statue to be installed despite two others already put up at the Government College, Sangod, and a park in Vinod Kalan, his native village.
“Such a demand is not appropriate keeping in view other martyr families,” the chief minister said in the statement in Hindi.

The wife of Rohitash Lamba is seeking a job for her brother-in-law on compassionate grounds but if the job is given to him, then the family members or relatives of all widows of martyrs might start putting undue pressure on them.

“Should we create such a difficult situation in front of the wives of martyrs because the rules made at present have been made on the basis of past experiences. How can it be justified to deny the rights of the children of martyrs and give jobs to other relatives? What will happen to the children of martyrs when they become adults,” he asked.

Gehlot said during his first tenure as chief minister in 1999, the Rajasthan government released the Kargil package for dependents of martyrs and it has been made more effective by increasing it from time to time.

He said the Rajasthan government has made a provision that if the wife of a soldier is pregnant at the time of his martyrdom and does not want a job, it will be kept reserved for the child so that their future can be secured.

Help has been given to the Pulwama martyrs’ dependents as per the rules of this package, Gehlot said.

“Rajasthan is the land of heroes and thousands of soldiers from the state have sacrificed their lives for the motherland. The people and the government here respect the martyrs the most,” Gehlot added.

He said he shared his thoughts on the issue with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, a minister in the Gehlot government, met the martyrs’ widows protesting outside Pilot’s residence and said it is the government’s responsibility to respect them.

The pilot had on Monday written to Gehlot, demanding an inquiry into the alleged police misbehaviour with the widows.

He also requested him to sympathetically consider their demands.

BJP’s TN chief Annamalai hits out at ally AIADMK for admitting ex-party leaders

    [ad_1]

Chennai: BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit President K. Annamalai, rattled by the back-to-back resignations of party functionaries who went on to join the AIADMK, on Tuesday lashed out at his ally.

Accusing the AIADMK of poaching BJP leaders, he tweeted: “If I decide to go shopping (poaching), my shopping list will be big. But the time and venue, I will decide”.

He also said that the presence of a former Chief Minister, while second-, third-, fourth-, and fifth-level BJP leaders were joining the AIADMK was a message that the BJP has grown in Tamil Nadu.

Earlier the BJP used to poach from the Dravidian parties for it to grow, but presently Dravidian parties were poaching from the BJPA for their growth, he alleged.

In a hard-hitting statement on Twitter, he said: “Before the Kurukshetra war, people were allowed to change camps. The war which will start in a few months from now, let everyone take positions.”

The former IPS officer said that his aim was to bring his party to power in Tamil Nadu, adding that he was not a BJP manager but a BJP leader.

BJP’s Tamil Nadu IT cell President C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar quit the BJP on Sunday and joined the AIADMK in the presence of its interim General Secretary K. Palaniswami. On Monday, BJP IT cell state Secretary, Dilip Kannan also resigned from the saffron party only to join the AIADMK on Tuesday along with a few other state leaders.

BJP state leader and actor Gayathri Raghuram quit in December 2022, to protest the “dictatorial attitude” of Annamalai. BJP OBC Morcha leader Tiruchi Surya who is the son of DMK leader Tiruchi Siva, also quit the party.

Sources in the BJP told IANS that several leaders were antagonised by the style of functioning of Annamalai ever since he has become the state President.

Video: In Karnataka, Hindu Sena chief says ‘Hit BJP leaders with slippers if…’

    [ad_1]

Rashtriya Hindu Sena chief Pramod Muthalik is once again back in the headlines for making controversial statements. Recently, he criticized BJP leaders in Karnataka for seeking votes in the name of PM Modi ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls.

Challenging them to campaign without using Modi’s name and photo, he asked them to seek votes highlighting their own accomplishments in development, cow protection, and Hindutva.

Urging voters not to support BJP, he said that the party only knows how to take Modi’s name for votes.

Continuing his criticisms, he said that BJP leaders must try seeking votes based on their work. Those who seek votes in the name of Modi are useless and did not understand the needs of their constituents, he added.

On January 23, Muthalik announced that he will be contesting the assembly poll as an independent candidate from Karkala.

    Discontent among Hindu groups

The Rashtriya Hindu Sena chief’s criticism of the BJP comes amid growing discontent among some Hindu groups.

While the BJP has sought to portray itself as the only party capable of protecting Hindu interests, some groups have accused it of not doing enough.

The upcoming Assembly polls in Karnataka are expected to be closely contested, with both the BJP and Congress vying for control of the state. The results of the elections will not only have significant implications on Karnataka but also on national politics.

BJP-JD(S) tussle to woo voters in south Karnataka intensifies

The political tussle to woo the voters has intensified in south Karnataka with the ruling BJP focusing on the region to ensure a majority in the state Assembly elections.

The saffron party is organising a roadshow of PM Modi on Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway to make an impact on the voters of the region, while the JD(S) is also planning a similar event to counter the BJP.

The JD(S) derives its core strength from south Karnataka especially from Ramnagar, Mandya and Mysuru regions, where Vokkaligas influence the election results is planning a counter strategy to retain its sway over voters.

The JD (S) has decided to conduct a roadshow between Bengaluru and Mysuru on the Expressway. Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda will lead the roadshow. Party insiders claim that there is no question of letting the vote bank of JD(S) slip away to the saffron camp.

Religious leaders can change mindset of those involved in violence: Bommai

    [ad_1]

Chickmagalur: With violence and militancy are happening in present times in the name of religion, the mindset of those who are involved in such activities has to be changed, and that can be done only by religious leaders, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Sunday.

In his speech after inaugurating Sri Jagadguru Renukacharya Jayanthi Yugamanotsava, Sri Veerabhadra Swamy Maharathotsava, and the foundation stone for the 51-foot tall statue of Sri Renukacharya here, he said it is lucky that they have Rambhapuri in south India just like Kashi in north India.

The preaching, ideology, and culture of Jagadguru Renukacharya are a strong foundation for a bright future, he said, adding that the pontiff always propagated the ‘Manava Dharma’ saying that those who tread the path of truth and act to their conscience are the real human beings.

The Siddartha Shikamani shows several ways to keep their mind in control. They must adopt these two in their lives. The seers are undertaking the campaign continuously to remove differences among the castes and communities, and for the establishment of social harmony, ommai said.

The CM said Sri Jagadguru is playing an important role in creating awareness about the religion. Former CM, B.S.Yediyurappa, irrespective of caste or community, released the grants to the Rambhapuri Peet, Kaginele Gurupeeta, development of Baada (the birthplace of Saint Kanakadasa), and Rs 40 crore for Haj Bhavan. The mutts are offering shelter, food, and education to the children. This has helped in the development of the state, he added.

Bommai said everyone must understand that it is possible to ensure world peace only through religion. The need of the hour is to build an equal society. It is a matter of happiness that the Jagadguru Renukacharya award has been presented to Yediyurappa in recognition of his contribution to the people.

Telangana: Sharmila urges oppn leaders to join her in demand for President’s rule

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: YSR Telangana Party president Y. S. Sharmila has written to the state presidents of all opposition parties, inviting them to join her in the demand for President’s rule in Telangana.

Sharmila, in the letter, appealed to the leaders to join her in meeting President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi and apprising the latter of the worsening law and order situation in the state, where opposition party cadres and leaders were repeatedly being “targeted” by the BRS party “hooligans”, who are given a free hand in “unleashing murderous attacks on those who raised voices against Chief Minister KCR”.

The letters were personally addressed to state Congress president Revanth Reddy, BJP’s Bandi Sanjay, TDP’s Kasani Gnaneshwar, AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi, TJS leader Kodandaram, BSP leader Praveen Kumar, CPI-M’s Tammineni Veerabhadram, CPI’s Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao, Shankar Goud, and MRPS leader Manda Krishna Madiga.

Sharmila, who is sister of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, explained the urgent need for opposition parties in Telangana to join hands and set the situation right by ensuring President’s rule is enforced, since the abuse of power and unabated atrocities of BRS government is taking its toll on entire state.

“Wherever KCR’s corruption and his colleagues’ misdeeds were questioned, there were attacks and use of police power. The state of Telangana that was built on the foundation of sacrifices lies at the crossroads where democracy, right to speech and constitutional privileges were being crushed,” she wrote.

“We need to rise, join hands and wage this battle for the sake of future generations. This is a historic necessity and so I’m extending this invitation to join me in calling on the President,” she added.

Sharmila was last month arrested in Mahabubabad and her padyatra was stopped by the police following allegations that she made derogatory comments against the local MLA of BRS.

The YSRTP leader was earlier arrested in Warangal and her campaign vehicle was damaged in the attack by BRS men.
