Maha govt bows before farmers, but wary leaders don’t call off ‘long march’

Mumbai: In what is viewed as a huge victory for the farmers, the Maharashtra government on Thursday evening conceded almost all demands of the agitating peasants, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said.
However, wary of past experiences, the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) has decided against calling off the agitation, but has halted the ongoing Nashik-Mumbai “long march” en route at Vasind in Thane.
“We had very fruitful negotiations on all issues and most have been resolved, I shall make a statement in the legislature tomorrow morning,” a beaming Shinde said, after emerging from a marathon meeting with over a dozen AIKS leaders.
Confirming the developments from the AIKS side, CPI-M MLA Vinod Nikole said that most pertaining to the jurisdiction of the state have been sorted out while those in the Centre’s ambit have yet to be resolved.
“Accordingly, we have decided to halt the ‘long march’ at Vasind. The agitation is not called off till the government issues the relevant orders right up to the district level to implement our demands within the next two days,” Nikole told media persons.
He pointed out how in the past two “long march’ agitations in 2018 and 2019, the then governments had made all assurances to the peasants and later nothing came out of it.
“This time, we want the government to issue the GR, orders to the Divisional Commissioners, District Collectors and others down the rank to implement the decisions agreed in today’s meeting. The ‘long march’ will disperse only after we see the execution at the local levels,” Nikole declared.
He added that the marchers and their families have been calling up to ascertain the implementation aspect after the demands are accepted and the farmers will not budge from their Vasind camp till then.

Nikole cautioned that if the orders are not issued in two days to all the officers concerned, then the march will resume to reach the Maharashtra Legislature as scheduled on Monday, which could create complications here.
Thursday’s meeting – the second in two days – comprised Shinde, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, Ministers and officials of the concerned departments, while the farmers side included AIKS President Ashok Dhawale, state General Secretary Dr. Ajit Nawale, Jiva Pandu Gavit, Nikole and others.
Among the major points in the 17-point charter of demands are: compensation or Rs 600/quintal to onion growers who have suffered owing to rock-bottom prices and MSP of Rs 2,000/quintal from the next season, besides fair remuneration for soybean, cotton, tur, milk, etc.

Abdullah-led delegation of Oppn leaders meets CEC

New Delhi: Veteran politician from Jammu and Kashmir and Lok Sabha member Farooq Abdullah led a delegation of leaders from Opposition parties to meet the Election Commission (EC) to press for early assembly polls in the Union Territory.
Jammu and Kashmir is without a legislative assembly and an elected government for the last five years, the National Conference (NC) leader said after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar here.
“The CEC heard us and has assured that the commission would soon hold a meeting to discuss the issue,” Abdullah said.
The delegation informed the CEC and other members of the commission that the government has been claiming of restoring normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir and that now the onus is on the EC (to hold assembly elections), he said.
“So, we asked why was the commission not taking note of the plight of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Abdullah, a three-time chief minister of the erstwhile state, said.
In 2019, the Centre abrogated Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, and bifurcated the state into Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
In a memorandum submitted to the poll panel, the leaders said “in disregard to the letter and spirit of the Constitution, an unrepresentative and unaccountable bureaucracy is allowed to run the government to the discomfort and inconvenience of the general public”.
The memorandum signed by NCP leader Sharad Pawar, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, AAP leader Sanjay Singh and others, said the EC is under the Constitutional obligation to hold assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir.

The delegation said any further “delay in and denial of assembly elections would amount to denial of fundamental and democratic rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and a breach of Constitutional obligations”.
The panchayat elections and elections to other public representative institutions cannot be a substitute to legislative assembly elections and the government and for that matter, the EC cannot avoid and delay assembly elections on that ground, the delegation said in the memorandum.
“Had it been so, there would be no need to conduct assembly elections in states, as the EC is with due dispatch and punctuality, as is evident from recently held assembly elections in Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland and the elections scheduled to be held in Karnataka,” it said.
The opposition leaders said in each case, the argument though, inherently specious, could have been that as panchayati raj institutions (PRIs) were in place there was no need to hold assembly elections.
The Union home minister and other functionaries of the government of India have more than once stated that the government is ready to facilitate conduct of assembly elections and the final call is to be taken by the EC, the leaders claimed.
They said the assembly elections would be the first and important step towards restoration of all the Constitutional rights guaranteed in the Constitution and fulfilment of political aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The leaders urged the CEC to announce assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir without any further delay and notify the election schedule so that the democratic rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and access to democratic institutions is restored.

The signatories of the memorandum include National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah, Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge, CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and other senior leaders of national political parties.
The memorandum reads that Jammu and Kashmir is without a legislative assembly and an elected government for last five years.

JK All Party Delegation To Meet Opposition Leaders, ECI In Delhi

SRINAGAR: An all party delegation of Jammu and Kashmir leaders will hold a meeting in Delhi and all meet Election Commission of India over holding of elections in the Union Territory.
The 13-member delegation will be headed by National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah.
Quoting sources, KNS reported that the delegation will first meet national opposition parties at Constitutional Club of India to discuss and deliberate upon several issues pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir.
Sources said the meeting will take place at around 1 pm at the Constitutional Club of India in New Delhi, where several issues including holding of elections, restoration of statehood to J&K, imposition of property tax and other issues will be discussed.
“Later the delegation headed by Dr Farooq Abdullah will meet the Election Commission of India at 2 pm to seek holding of elections in Jammu and Kashmir,” they said.
Sources further said they will inform the Election Commission when situation is conducive for holding G-20 meeting, why cannot it be conducive for holding elections.
The 13-member delegation led by Dr Farooq Abdullah includes, MP NC Hassnain Masoodi, Ratan Lal Gupta (NC) , Ravinder Sharma (Congress) , Harashdev Singh (Panthers Party) , Muzafar Shah (ANC) , Amrik Singh Reem (PDP), Master Hari Singh (CPIM), Gulchain Singh (Dogra Saba) , Manesh Sanaini (Shiva Sena) , Taranjit Singh Tony (AAP), and Khajuria.
Notably, on March 11, Dr Farooq Abdullah chaired an all party meeting in Jammu to review and discuss the current state of affairs in Jammu and Kashmir.

As cases against opposition leaders pile up, BJP gets campaign issue for 2024

Patna: Corruption has been a plank for BJP to further its political goals. It happened in the run up of 2014 Lok Sabha election and it appears to be happening in the run up to 2024 Lok Sabha election as well.
The recent raids on Lalu Yadav’s family and the way former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was sent to jail allegedly for liquor scam, corruption will be a core issue for BJP to raise in the Lok Sabha election 2024.
“BJP is afraid of its position in Bihar. It is the only opposition party in the state. Moreover, the caste equation is not favourable for it. Hence, pressurising the opposition parties and eliminating their prominent leaders from the politics is the only ploy left for BJP,” said Mritunjay Tiwari, national spokesperson of RJD.
“The Narendra Modi government has completely failed in the last 9 years. Hence, it is using constitutional agencies to target opposition leaders. We will remember it. They are not born to rule the country for their entire life. Political turn around will happen,” Tiwari said.
In the run up to the 2014 Lok Sabha election, BJP arrived in the corridor of power by bringing up alleged irregularities in sale and purchase of lands. At that time, Robart Vadra was the target. In 2024, the target is shifted to Yadav family and Manish Sisodia.
Why is BJP afraid of Bihar?
Over the years, BJP has been contesting elections in Bihar behind the face of Nitish Kumar. Now, Nitish Kumar, in a bid to save his own party, teamed up with RJD last year.
It has put an established leader like Sushil Kumar Modi aside after the 2020 assembly election, and brought Tar Kishore Prasad and Renu Devi as his substitutes. BJP top leadership realised that Sushil Kumar Modi is the one leader who could bat on the bumpy pitch of Bihar. Modi is spearheading in Bihar to target Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav.

Sushil Modi justified Friday’s ED raids on Lalu’s family. He asked Tejashwi Yadav to reveal how he owned a luxury house in the upscale locality of Delhi at such a young age. At 29, Tejashwi Yadav was the owner of 52 properties.
“Instead of answering these questions, he and other members of the family are crying foul,” Modi said.
“There are two persons responsible for the plight of Lalu Prasad Yadav and they are Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and JD-U national president Lalan Singh. They have provided the documents of IRCTC lands for the jobs scam to CBI. Lalan Singh was the one who had discovered this scam in 2008 and also wrote a letter to then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,” Modi said.
In 2019, BJP along with JD-U had given an impressive show by winning 39 out of 40 Lok Sabha seats and one seat went to Congress party. In that election, BJP contested the poll on the face of Nitish Kumar in Bihar.
Shivanand Tiwari, the vice president of RJD told IANS: “BJP is turning out to be politically bankrupt in the country. They never talk about real issues like price rise, unemployment, farmers related issues, education, health etc. Hence, they have only one option: communalise the society to win elections and remain in power.”
“The situation of BJP in states like Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Tamilnadu and other non-BJP ruled states are not impressive at the moment. BJP think tanks believe that mission 2024 may take a big jolt if the party would not perform well in these states,” he said.
Non BJP ruling states will hold the key in the 2024 Lok Sabha poll.
At present, BJP has to take on Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav in Bihar, Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal, Navin Patnaik in Odisha, Hemant Soren in Jharkhand, Raman Singh in Chhattisgarh, Ashok Gahlot in Rajasthan, Arvind Kejriwal-Bhagwant Mann in Delhi and Punjab, Sharad Pawar-Udhav Thakeray in Maharashtra, KCR in Telangana, M.K. Stalin in Tamilnadu and left parties in Kerala. Recently, Tejashwi Yadav met Hemant Soren, Arvind Kejriwal, and M.K. Stalin in a bid to unite the opposition parties.
These states and the leaders are holding the key in Lok Sabha election 2024 as West Bengal is having 42 Lok Sabha seat and Mamata Banerjee-led TMC is in power, Rajasthan and Chatishgarh have Congress governments and they respectively have 25 and 11 seats.
In Jharkhand, JMM led by Hemant Soren is in power with 14 seats. Kerala has 20 Lok Sabha seats and the Left is ruling the state. In Telangana, KCR is ruling the state with 17 seats. DMK led by Stalin has a government in Tamil Nadu and it has 39 Lok Sabha seats.
In Punjab, AAP government is ruling with 13 seats. YSR Congress led by Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has 25 seats. In Bihar, Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav are the big challengers in the 40 seats of the state.
So, a total of 228 Lok Sabha seats fall under these states ruled by opposition parties where BJP leaders cannot influence the government machinery for the political benefits during Lok Sabha election 2024.
Besides, Maharashtra is another state where the influence of NCP leader Sharad Powar cannot be ruled out. Maharashtra has 48 Lok Sabha seats.
After the Maharashtra government changed, BJP has the upper hand in the Lok Sabha election.
At present, BJP is wielding power in big states like Uttar Pradesh with 80 Lok Sabha seats. Besides, Uttar Pradesh, BJP is ruling in Karnataka with 28 Lok Sabha seats, Madhya Pradesh with 29 seats, 26 in Gujarat, Assam with 14 seats, 10 in Haryana, 5 in Uttrakhand and Himachal Pradesh has 4 seats. So the total reached 196 Lok Sabha seats.
The BJP think tank knew that law and order is a state subject and BJP can influence the state machinery for its political benefits. The change of government in Maharashtra has given an edge to BJP as it can directly influence government machinery in 244 Lok Sabha seats.
BJP won 303 seats in 2019 and formed the government at the Centre. Hence, JD-U national president Lalan Singh is claiming to cut 44 seats of BJP from Bihar, West Bengal and Jharkhand, it would tumble below 260 seats. In that case anything can happen. BJP won 17 seats from Bihar and 16 seats from West Bengal and 11 seats from Jharkhand in 2019.

Jammu Kashmir Politicians To Meet EC, Central Leaders For Early Polls, Statehood

SRINAGAR: The non-BJP all-party meeting in Jammu convened by Dr Farooq Abdullah has decided that they will meet the Election Commission for early elections in federally ruled Jammu and Kashmir. They said the Lt Governor-led dispensation does not represent the people of the erstwhile state.

“There is uncertainty everywhere in Jammu and Kashmir. It is the right of State Assembly to take a call on imposition of property tax like issues,” Dr Farooq has told the meeting. “This is a temporary government. It is not a people’s government. It is a government of Delhi. People’s government is Assembly where members have to decide what is right and what is wrong.”
Dr Abdullah told reporters that religion was used to create division between Hindus and Muslims in the region. “We must not forget that Jammu and Kashmir is a secular state and will remain secular. All faiths in the region live shoulder-by-shoulder together. Jammu and Kashmir is the crown of India and with the grace of God, it will remain the Crown of India in future as well,” he told the reporters after the meeting was over.
Regretting the politics of division, Dr Abdullah asked: “The politics of fear and hate is not new. What will they do to 22-24 crore Muslims? Will they throw them in the sea or will they send them to China?”
Dr Abdullah called for the restoration of statehood and early elections. “We want Statehood to be restored and elections to be held. For the first time in the history of the nation, a proud State was reduced to a Union Territory (UT). It was a tragedy,” Dr Abdullah said. “We are an integral part of the nation. We belong to this nation, so why are they doing this to us?”
Insisting that there was an uncalled delay in starting the democratic process, Dr Abdullah said the administration is claiming an improvement in the situation. “The government claims the situation has improved in Jammu and Kashmir. A G-20 meeting is being planned in May. Why the delay in conducting Assembly elections?” he said.
Announcing the outcome of the meeting, Dr Abdullah said a delegation of Jammu and Kashmir leaders will leave for Delhi and apprise all the national political parties about the prevailing situation. “Uncertainty prevails in Jammu and Kashmir after the Union government changed its status and took over all its affairs,” Dr Abdullah said. “We hope they will raise our issues appropriately in the upcoming Parliament session.”
Lashing at the media, the NC President said the media lacks the guts to broadcast the ground realities. “I know the situation is adverse right now and you too are forced to succumb before the circumstances,” he said.

The meeting hosted by Dr Farooq Abdullah at his Bathandi residence was attended by National Panthers Party leader Harshdev Singh, Congress chief Viqar Rasool Wani, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Taranjit Singh Tony, CPI(M) leader MY Tarigami, Shiv Sena president Manish Sahwany and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Amrik Singh Reen.

JK leaders will meet National Opposition Leaders; Election Commission in Delhi: Dr Farooq Abdullah

Jammu, Mar 11: Ahead of resumption of parliament session, Member Parliament and president National Conference, Farooq Abdhulla on Saturday said that a delegation of Jammu and Kashmir’s opposition parties will leave for national Capital Delhi and apprise all national political parties about the situation in the Union Territory.
Addressing a press conference at his Jammu residence, Dr Abdullah, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that uncertainty prevails in Jammu and Kashmir after union government changed its status and took over all its affairs.
He said the delegation of Jammu and Kashmir will apprise national leadership about the ground situation in J&K and uncalled delay in starting the democratic process.
“After day-long deliberations with all opposition parties we decided to leave for Delhi and call all national leaders to apprise them about the condition of Jammu and Kashmir,” Dr Abdhullah said, adding, “The delegation will also meet Election Commission of India over the delay in conducting the elections.”
He further added that on one had Prime Minister and all sections of Government of India claimed that situation has improved in the Jammu and Kashmir, while in May G20 meetings also planned in the UT. “So, we don’t understand the delay in conducting the assembly elections,” the NC chief said.
Dr Abdullah added that JK delegation apprised the national leadership about issues like land eviction drive, recruitment scams, imposition of taxes so they understand “our issue and raise it appropriately in upcoming parliament session”.
Dr Abdhullah was flanked by former minster and National Panther’s Party Leader, Harshdev Singh, JK Congress Chief Viqar Rasool Wani, former Minister and Congress Vice President Raman Bhalla, DDC member and AAP leader Taranjit Singh Tony, former MLA M Y Taragami and others, JK Shiv Sena President Manish Sahwany, PDP leader Amrik Singh Reen
“Property tax or any another tax is the right of assembly not the bureaucratic rules. Government should conduct elections and also respectfully return our statehood. This is a temporary arrangement and permanent arrangement is assembly, that why we are saying restore assembly let people decide about tax,” he added.

Dr Abdullah said that we will discuss the issue of unemployment, compulsion of conducting recruitment to blacklisted company, property tax and others.
On invitation to DPAP president Gulam Nabi Azad, Dr Abdhulla sad that he yet not be invited but doors has been opened for all.
It is worthy to mention that Parliament’s Budget Session was commenced in January. It observed recess from February 14 till March 12 to enable the department related Parliamentary Standing Committees to examine the Demands for Grants and make reports relating to their Ministries/ Departments.
The proceeding of session will commence again on March 13, ahead of which JK opposition likely to meet senior opposition leaders of the country—(KNO)

Agartala: Taking a serious note of the clashes and violence in the aftermath of the elections in BJP-ruled Tripura, a Left-Congress delegation on Saturday said it will raise the issue in Parliament to bring the matter to the knowledge of all countrymen.
Members of the delegation, who had come under an attack of miscreants in Nehalchandranagar on Friday, during its tour of violence-hit areas, also said that senior leaders of the Left and the Congress will meet President Droupadi Murmu to apprise her of the “terror tactics unleashed by the BJP and RSS” in states ruled by the saffron camp.
Three people have so far been arrested in connection with Friday’s incident in Nehalchandranagar area of Sepahijala district.
Addressing a press conference, CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP Elmaram Kareem claimed that the “BJP-RSS- backed goons have not just mounted attacks on the people of the state but also destroyed means of their livelihood”, as many of them were forced to flee homes.
“The police are not taking action against the troublemakers, allowing them to roam about free for more vandalism in the northeastern state. It appears that law and order has completely collapsed in Tripura and the government has miserably failed to maintain peace,” he told reporters here.
Kareem, who arrived here along with seven MPs and senior leaders to take stock of the situation in Tripura, said that “the fact-finding delegation had called on Governor Satyadeo Narain Arya and briefed him about the prevailing condition” in the state, where elections were held on February 16 and the result declared on March 2.
The governor gave the delegation assurance that he would look into the matter and do the needful, the CPI(M) leader stated.
“We will raise this issue of post-election violence in the both houses of Parliament to draw the attention of the country. People outside the state are not aware about the very serious situation here,” he added.
All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Ajay Kumar, who was also present at the press meet, claimed that the BJP has installed “Talibani raj” in Tripura.

Expressing concern over the attack on the MP delegation, Kumar said that the state had long been witnessing incidents of violence but “no measure has been taken to restore peace and order”.
“Neither the prime minister nor the home minister has made any statement on the attack on MP delegation in Tripura. It is an insult to Parliament,” he said.
CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury said over 1,000 incidents of post-poll violence have been reported in the state
“Youth bearing affiliation to opposition camps had to leave homes and run for their lives in the wake of the unabated attacks. We want the government to be sympathetic towards those affected in the midst of post-poll violence,” he said.
Tripura Congress president Birajit Sinha claimed that a “civil war-like situation” may arise in the state, if nothing was done immediately to stop the miscreants.
Among others, CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharjee was present at the meet.
Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee alleged that a “deep-rooted conspiracy” was behind the attack on the delegation.
“The Left and the Congress are simply trying to defame the BJP at the national stage. Chief Minister Manik Saha, who is in Delhi, has already spoken to the DGP and instructed him to take stern legal action on those involved in the attack. Senior party leaders have also discussed the matter with local functionaries,” said Bhattcharjee.
The BJP-IPFT government recently returned to power in the state for the second consecutive term, with the saffron party bagging 32 seats in the 60-member assembly and the regional outfit securing one constituency.
