Education needs to be priority for govt, political leaders: Delhi Dy CM

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Youth must be inspired and provided with opportunities to become life-long learners, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said on Tuesday, asserting that education needs to be the priority for government as well as political leaders.

He was speaking at a conference — ‘Prayaas – Young Minds, New Possibilities’ — organised by Udhyam Learning Foundation with an aim to unlock the potential of India’s youth, a statement said.

“Indian youth holds the key to the nation’s advancement. Youth must be inspired and provided with opportunities to become life-long learners. Hear them and trust them as they will become the innovators who will change the world in the future.

“We as enablers, need to be more experimental in our approach and keep testing new models for educational transformation and bring them to scale for our country at large. Education needs to be a priority for policy, government and political leaders,” Sisodia, who is also the education minister, said.

Mekin Maheshwari, founder, ULF, said ‘Prayaas’ is an effort to unite like-minded people and organizations who care deeply about the lack of opportunities and pathways for India’s youth to realise their potential.

“The goal is to build a thriving and supportive ecosystem, where every individual feels empowered to define their own path,” Maheshwari said.

The statement said it said ‘Prayaas’ aimed to stimulate a “cohesive and collective” understanding of the current issues and instil a “sense of urgency” towards building new pathways for the youth of our country.

Change-makers, practitioners and leaders from over 120 of India’s top organisations including Delhi government school students, teachers and other independent people, took part in the event.

Nizamabad: A few leaders of the NSUI, the student wing of the Congress party showed black flags and attempted to stop the convoy of Telangana Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, IT and Industries KT Rama Rao.

Minister KTR visited Nizamabad to inaugurate several developmental projects.

“Few people from NSUI showed black flags to the convey of Minister KTR. They tried to stop the convoy but we took them into custody. Around 5 to 6 people including Congress corporator Gadugu Rohit have been taken into custody,” Nizamabad Commissioner Nagaraju said.

Hitting out at the minister, Congress corporator Gadugu Rohit had warned that he and his supporters would stop KTR from entering the city.

“Tomorrow Minister KTR is visiting Nizamabad for a few inaugurations and party programs. We are questioning him, how can you come to Nizamabad? Why did you do for Nizamabad? You have not given double-bedroom houses to anyone in Nizamabad urban. You are just playing with the innocent Muslim community. Kavitha who stays here has not brought any money to the municipal corporation. If you have any shame, do not step into Nizamabad. On behalf of the Congress party, we will stop your program tomorrow by any chance. We have the people’s support for this,” Rohit said in a video released by him.

  • Giridhar Gamang, several Odisha leaders join BRS

Giridhar Gamang, several Odisha leaders join BRS

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Former chief minister of Odisha, Giridhar Gamang, who quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) two days ago, joined the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) here on Friday.

Gamang, a nine-term Lok Sabha MP, along with several other leaders from Odisha joined the party in the presence of BRS president and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

Speaking on the occasion, Rao stated that BRS is floated with a determination to change India’s future and the thought and ideology of the country.

He welcomed Giridhar Gamang, his wife and former MP Hema Gamang, son Shishir Gamang and other leaders into the BRS fold.

KCR, as Rao is popularly known, said that joining Giridhar Gamang and supporters gives a great strength to the BRS.

The leaders who joined BRS include Odisha BJP State Yuva Morcha General Secretary Sneranjan Das, Koraput Parliamentary Constituency Youth Congress President and AICC Member, Rabindra Mohapatra, Phalguni Sabar, P. Gopal Rao, Mallya Ranjan Swain, convenor of Navnirman Kishan Sangthan Akshay Kumar, Mayur Bhanj ex-MP Ramchandra Hansada, Dhenkanal ex-MLA Nabin Nanda, six other former MLAs and leaders of various parties and organisations.

The BRS chief said that Akshay Kumar is a great person and is following in the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi. Many people who took up movements for farmers are joining BRS on Friday, he said.

KCR reiterated that if people elect the BRS to rule the country, 24-hour quality electricity will be supplied to the entire country in two years.

“We will give free electricity to agriculture and implement Kisan Bandhu for farmers in the country and Dalit Bandhu for 20 lakh Dalit families every year,” he said.

He said that clean drinking water will be provided all over the country as being done in Telangana land while 83 crore acres of cultivable land in the country will be provided for irrigation facilities at the earliest.

The BRS leader remarked that parties are winning elections, leaders are winning but people are the losers after every election.

“India’s politics is about to undergo drastic changes. People should win elections, not parties or leaders. Then only, democracy can flourish in the country,” he said.

KCR stated that, aiming for power, political conspirators are raising many slogans and making tall promises.

“In the name of caste and religion, political parties are creating discord between people. People are being divided. Parties should come out with the aim of public service and national development. The parties that have won the election should work in that direction. But what is happening today,” he asked.

He claimed that Mahanadi in Odisha has more water availability than the state needs.

“We are using only 25-30 per cent. Rest of the water flows into the sea. Brahmani and Vaitarani rivers also flow along with Mahanadi. But there is no water to drink. Where is all this water going? Why is this water not coming into our houses as drinking water through drains?”

Opinion | Don’t Blame the Government for Our Leaders Mishandling Documents

    [ad_1]

    classified documents unsafe secrets 14143

Sometimes, however, I reviewed a document marked “TS/SCI” and did not intuitively understand why its contents were classified in that way. The information might seem benign on its face and the implications for U.S. national security were far from clear, at least to me. Does that mean that the information in the document was over-classified? Not necessarily.

Imagine we learn that a leader of a hostile nation — and I am wholly inventing this example — loves turnip ice cream. Could that information be classified at the TS/SCI level? Hypothetically, yes, and properly so. Let me explain.

Perhaps the only person on the planet who knows of the turnip ice cream preference is someone on his staff. Perhaps that staffer is supplying information to our intelligence community about the foreign leader — his ice cream preferences, for example — but also about other things, including things he overhears the leader talking about during the day. That highly placed source is incredibly valuable to U.S. intelligence because of his proximity to the foreign leader. However, not all his reporting will be crucial and some of it — including the turnip preference — will seem trivial.

Should we still classify the turnip reporting at the TS/SCI level and endeavor to protect it? Absolutely. If leaked, it might be easy for the foreign leader to determine the source of the leak and something very bad could happen to that staffer (and to U.S. intelligence interests).

We might also learn of the leader’s turnip fixation through other means because we gather intelligence through many “sources and methods” that are not always obvious from the contents of a document. Indeed, the sources and methods were often opaque to me — and properly so — because though I may need the underlying information to do my job, I did not “need to know” how we obtained that information.

Even if we saw the documents found at the homes of Trump, Biden and Pence, we might not understand how the information was compiled nor why the sources and methods are unique, sensitive and worthy of protection. We also could not say that their mishandling was the result of over-classification because we cannot know that.

That is why extraordinarily reckless and irresponsible people like Edward Snowden can do so much damage to U.S. national security interests. They cannot know — and do not understand — the nature of the information they are disclosing, how it was obtained, who they are putting at risk with their disclosures, and what the costs to the U.S. might be, in terms of lost access and lost information. But I digress.

Do we have an over-classification problem in this country? I suppose we do. Information might be classified that should not be classified at all; it might be classified at a level higher than it ought to be classified; or it might be classified for too long when declassification could serve other important public interests like transparency and accountability.

But accepting all that, it is impossible to know that these types of over-classification issues apply to the documents that turned up at the homes of Trump, Biden and Pence. And, so what? None of this is an excuse for sloppy handling.

Furthermore, if a document is classified, then we must — as users of classified information — accept that classification on its face and treat it as the rules require us to treat it. If it is over-classified, so be it. It certainly would not be prudent for someone to decide on their own that a document is over-classified and then treat it as if it is not classified at all.

The classified information system is bulky and imperfect. And there is inevitably an over-classification problem, much of it likely not nefarious. A classification official gets into less trouble and incurs less risk for over-classifying a document rather than under-classifying it. But, in the end, the system relies on trust and diligence and prudence and rules. When people fail to act in those ways — even if unintentionally — we ought not make excuses for them.

  • DeSantis defends banning African American studies course as Black leaders call for action

DeSantis defends banning African American studies course as Black leaders call for action

    [ad_1]

“When I heard it didn’t meet the standards, I figured, yeah, they may be doing CRT,” DeSantis told reporters at an event in Jacksonville. “It’s way more than that.”

In Florida’s latest crackdown on how race is taught in schools, state education officials earlier this month rejected the African American studies course from being implemented. The move drew swift backlash in the state and beyond, racking up criticism from by academics, advocacy groups and liberal policymakers including the Biden administration, which on Friday said that blocking the course was “incomprehensible.”

A coalition of Black faith leaders is now pushing to meet with the DeSantis administration over its decision to block students from taking the course and is planning a march on the capitol in Tallahassee next month. They join a chorus of Black state lawmakers who have denounced the move by the Florida Department of Education, claiming it is an attempt to whitewash history.

“When you devalue my history, and say it lacks educational merit, that is demeaning to us,” Rev. R. B. Holmes, Jr., pastor of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Tallahassee, told reporters Monday. “And it may be a problem in messaging, maybe they didn’t mean it that way. It already has national attention.”

Florida’s move to block the course follows a concerted effort by state republicans to restrict how race is taught in local classrooms. Under DeSantis, the state Education Department has rejected math textbooks over “impermissible” content, including teachings on critical race theory — something that Florida banned in education, along with the 1619 Project, through official action by its Board of education.

After the decision came to light last week, Florida’s education agency elaborated on rejecting the course in a tweet spelling out concerns with its lessons. The state took issue with several pieces of the College Board’s syllabus, such as parts on “Black Queer Studies,” advocacy for reparations, activism and intersectionality, which is a piece critical race theory, according to state’s education department.

Yet the agency’s defense did little to stem the criticism. Vice President Kamala Harris, who visited Tallahassee on Sunday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, criticized “extremist so-called leaders” who block history classes and prevent teachers from discussing “who they are and who they love” — a reference to the state’s controversial law banning educations from leading classroom discussions on sexual orientation or gender identity for students in kindergarten through third grade.

“Every student in our nation should be able to learn about the culture, contributions, and experiences of all Americans — including Black Americans — who shaped our history,” Harris said.

Florida’s GOP-controlled statehouse in 2022 passed legislation to expand state anti-discrimination laws and prohibit schools and companies from leveling guilt or blame to students and employees based on race or sex. Dubbed the “Stop WOKE Act” by DeSantis, it created new protections for students and workers, including that a person should not be instructed to “feel guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological distress” due to their race, color, sex or national origin.

Florida law requires public schools to teach students about the history of African Americans, including the “enslavement experience,” and steer them to develop an “understanding of the ramifications of prejudice, racism, and stereotyping on individual freedoms.” But the College Board lessons, according to DeSantis, are “pushing an agenda” on students.

“That’s the wrong side of the line for Florida standards. We believe in teaching kids facts and how to think, but we don’t believe they should have an agenda imposed on them,” DeSantis said Monday. “When you try to use Black history to shoehorn in queer theory, you are clearly trying to use that for political purposes.”

  • AAP accuses Delhi BJP leaders of amassing disproportionate assets

AAP accuses Delhi BJP leaders of amassing disproportionate assets

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday accused former Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta and its ex-national vice president Shyam Jaju of amassing properties worth crores disproportionate to their known sources of income when the former was the mayor of the erstwhile North Delhi civic body.

Gupta, however, termed the allegations “false and politically motivated”.

AAP leader Durgesh Pathak said the BJP should cancel the primary membership of Gupta and Jaju within two days, failing which the Aam Aadmi Party will take to the streets and gherao the BJP headquarters.

“The former state president and in-charge of the BJP got a company (promoted by their sons) registered on the address of the party office… They own 40 to 45 properties in Delhi and neighbouring areas. The Lokayukta has sent them three notices but they have not replied yet,” he alleged.

Demanding that both the BJP leaders reveal the source of their income within two days, Pathak said there should be a thorough investigation to ascertain if they had the backing of senior leadership of their party.

There should be a probe to find out if there is a link between the rise of the two leaders and the “downfall” of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, he said.

The AAP’s chief spokesperson and MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj said the Lokayukta is conducting a probe into the allegation of disproportionate assets against Gupta.

“Despite the Lokayukta issuing notices multiple times, Adesh Gupta did not declare his source of income. The company promoted by the sons of Gupta and Jaju is under the scanner for allegedly using as it a vehicle to aid financial wrongdoings,” he claimed during a press conference.

Bhardwaj claimed that a complaint with the Lokayukta has claimed that Gupta got the company incorporated while he was the North Delhi MCD mayor and his earnings are disproportionate to his declared sources of income.

Delhi Lokayukta Justice H C Mishra (retired) issued notices to Adesh Gupta from August 2022 to January 2023 asking him to declare his assets and sources of income, but he has not provided any information to date, he claimed.

“The Lt Governor should write a letter to the Anti-Corruption Branch and CBI about how these properties were bought and sold. The centre should take up a detailed investigation of the case to prove whether it believes in the principle of anti-corruption or not,” he said.

Reacting to the allegations, Adesh Gupta said, “I will file a defamation case against Saurabh Bhardwaj. They have a history of making false allegations and then apologising to BJP leaders following defamation cases. Bhardwaj should also be prepared for this.

“I respect the Lokayukta and will share all the details. Every year, I share details of my assets with the government. I am a dedicated BJP worker and have been exposing corrupt acts of the AAP and they are targeting me and my family to suppress my voice,” he claimed.

BJP leaders up in arms at former JD-U MLC’s ‘Karbala’ remarks

    [ad_1]

Patna: In wake of the “Karbala” remarks made by former JD-U MLC Gulam Rasool Balyawi, Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Friday targeted Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, terming him responsible for insulting the Hindu community.

“Due to the support of Nitish Kumar, his ministers and leaders are abusing and insulting the people of Hindu community. He is a helpless Chief Minister of Bihar. They cannot test our tolerance level. The people of the Hindu community are not wearing bangles,” he said while visiting Muzaffarpur district.

“One of Nitish Kumar’s cabinet ministers made remarks against the ‘Ram Charit Manas’ and other leaders are threatening to make cities of the country like Karbala. Bihar is going under the worst phase under the leadership of CM Nitish Kumar,” he added.

BJP Rajya Sabha member and former Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said: “Nitish Kumar should take cognisance of statements on ‘Ram Charit Manas’ and Karbala. JD-U and RJD are competing with each other to spread resentment in the country. The Chief Minister has lost control over the leaders who are making objectionable remarks.” said Sushil Kumar Modi, Rajya Sabha MP of BJP.

Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Samrat Chaudhary said: “I don’t know what is the religion of that leader and I am not interested in knowing him but I must say that we will not allow any city to become Karbala in the country. It is not possible until BJP is here. BJP believes in respecting every caste and religion and we cannot make statements one-sided. We have strong objections over the statement of the JD-U leader and we demand action against him.”

Even the RJD leaders are criticizing the statement of Balyawi.

Party spokesperson Mritunjay Tiwari said: “The statement of the JD-U leader was not right. The JD-U is a part of Mahagathbandhan and it is capable of taking action against him. The RJD respects every caste and religion.”

Balyawi, during a rally in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh on Thursday, targeted sacked BJP leader Nupur Sharma, over her controversial comments over the Prophet, saying that if anyone belittled him, “we will make cities of the country like Karbala”.

Earlier, Bihar Education Minister Chandra Shekhar Yadav, of the RJD, had termed ‘Ram Charit Manas’ as one of the books that spread hatred in the society.

Centre accords ‘X’ category CRPF armed security to four BJP leaders in Punjab

    [ad_1]

Four Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have been given ‘X’ category armed security protection by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) by the Central government, top government sources claimed on Saturday.

After conducting a security analysis based on an Intelligence Bureau (IB) report indicating a threat to senior BJP leaders, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) ordered the CRPF to give “X-category” round-the-clock protection, reports news agency ANI.

Among the BJP heavyweights who supplied the security protection were former Punjab cabinet ministers Balbir Singh Sidhu and Gurpreet Singh Kanga, former MLA Jagdip Singh Nakai, and Amarjit Singh Tikka. All four leaders recently left the Congress and joined the BJP.

In October, the Centre also gave five BJP leaders in Punjab “Y” category security coverage based on a related IB report.

As a result of threat assessments based on IB reports, the MHA used to offer security services in the “X,” “Y,” “Y+,” “Z,” and “Z+” categories through Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) like the CRPF and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

VIP security protection has been entrusted to the CISF and CRPF by the MHA. Each of the two paramilitary organisations has its own elite VIP security division of commandos that is equipped with cutting-edge close-protection weapons.
