Pune techie murder case: All accused including Hindu group leader acquitted

    [ad_1]

Pune: Nine years after the murder of an IT professional Mohsin Shaikh rocked Maharashtra, a Pune Sessions Court acquitted all 20 accused including the Hindu Rashtra Sena (HRS) President Dhananjay Desai, here on Friday.

Reading out the verdict on Friday, Pune Additional Sessions Judge S.B. Salunkhe said that the evidence brought on record was not strong enough to convict Desai and other co-accused and the prosecution had failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubts, lawyer Sudhir Shah said for one of the accused.

“It was a conspiracy to frame me and the police were misused… I was innocent,” Desai remarked briefly after the court verdict.

Shaikh, 28, had allegedly posted some objectionable content on social media pertaining to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the late Balasaheb Thackeray and others, which resulted in protests and violence in Unnatnagar and surroundings of Hadapsar, on June 2, 2014.

At that time, Shaikh, who hailed from Solapur, was returning home with his friend Riyaz A. Shendrare after offering prayers in a mosque and was targeted by some motorcycle-borne men armed with hockey sticks, cricket bats, stones and other weapons, who created mayhem in the vicinity, attacking people and properties.

Seriously hurt in the attack by a cricket bat blow, Shaikh died while under treatment in hospital, and his brother Mobin Shaikh lodged an FIR.

In his complaint, Mobin stated that the attackers intercepted his brother Mohsin and his friend Riyaz at Satav Plot around 9.15 p.m. as he sported a beard and wore a light-green Pathani suit.

After investigations, the Pune Police charged Desai of inciting passions through inflammatory speeches in January and March 2014 in Manjari and Lonikalbhor areas in Hadapsar.

A total of 21 people, including a minor, all said to be HRS activists, were nabbed in the case and all secured bail later, as their lawyers argued about political motives, with the state assembly elections which were due then.

Taking strong cognizance, the government of the then Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had appointed eminent lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, Special Public Prosecutor, but after objections from some groups, he finally opted out in May 2017.

Later, the government appointed the District Government Pleader Ujjwala Pawar as the SPP and after her retirement, Dhaigude Patil continued the matter.

The Sessions Court verdict on Friday has evoked sharp reactions from various political parties in the state.

TDP leader Lokesh embarks on 4,000 km-long padyatra

    [ad_1]

Kuppam: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) general secretary Nara Lokesh on Friday embarked on a 4,000 km-long state-wide padyatra, which is expected to gear up the opposition party for next year’s Assembly elections.

The young leader began the foot march from Kuppam constituency represented by party president and his father N. Chandrababu Naidu, to a massive public response and amid enthusiasm by party cadres.

Thousands of TDP workers and supporters joined Lokesh in the padyatra titled ‘Yuva Galam’ (youth’s voice).

The walkathon will cover 120 Assembly constituencies over the next 400 days across the state.

Lokesh launched the padyatra at 11.03 a.m. after special pooja Varadaraja Swamy temple. He also visited Mecca Masjid at Lakshmipuram and later Hebrass House of Worship Church at Bapunagar where he offered prayers and took the blessings of the community elders.

Lokesh’s father-in-law, popular actor and TDP MLA N. Balakrishna and cousin actor Nandamuri Taraka Ratna also participated in the pooja. Later, when the padyatra reached a mosque, Taraka Ratna fell down and fainted due to a stampede-like situation.

The actor was shifted to a private hospital. Balakrishna also rushed to the hospital.

The president of the state unit of the TDP, Atchen Naidu, party politburo members, and thousands of party cadres walked along Lokesh.

The main opposition party said that the sole aim of the padyatra is to end the “atrocious” rule of Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. It is confident that the march will create a history in the state.

The party functionaries showered flowers on Lokesh wishing him all the best in his endeavour.

Women activists offered ‘aartis’ to give a grand welcome to the party general secretary, and the locals of Kuppam raised slogans like ‘Chandranna Bidda (Son of Mr Chandrababu Naidu) zindabad’.

The TDP leader will address a public meeting later in the day. Police have made elaborate security arrangements for the walkathon.

Chittoor district police has granted conditional permission for the march. The TDP said that the conditions imposed for Lokesh’s padyatra reflect Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government’s sense of insecurity.

The TDP leaders alleged that the government is trying to create hurdles for the padyatra.

US operation in Somalia kills senior IS leader

    [ad_1]

Washington: A US military operation in Somalia has killed a number of Islamic State (IS) members, including a key leader of the terror group, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced.

“On January 25, on orders from the President, the US military conducted an assault operation in northern Somalia that resulted in the death of a number of IS members, including Bilal-al-Sudani, an IS leader in Somalia and a key facilitator for IS’s global network,” Austin was quoted as saying in a statement on Thursday.

“Al-Sudani was responsible for fostering the growing presence of IS in Africa and for funding the group’s operations worldwide, including in Afghanistan.

“No civilians were harmed as a result of this operation. We are grateful to our extraordinary service members as well as our intelligence community and other inter-agency partners for their support to this successful counterterrorism operation,” the Defense Secretary added.

No US troops or civilians were killed in the operation, he said.

Wednesday’s operation comes after US forces killed two top IS leaders in an airstrike in Syria late last year, CNN reported.

Al-Sudani was sanctioned by the US Treasury in 2012 for helping foreign fighters travel to a training camp of the al-Shabaab terror group and facilitating financing.

  • By conferring Padma Vibhushan on Mulayam, govt has made mockery of his contributions: SP leader

By conferring Padma Vibhushan on Mulayam, govt has made mockery of his contributions: SP leader

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: By conferring the Padma Vibhushan on Mulayam Singh Yadav, the government has made a mockery of his stature and contributions to the country, Samajwadi Party leader Swami Prasad Maurya said on Thursday.

He and other party leaders demanded that the Samajwadi Party founder be conferred the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian award.

Yadav was conferred the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian honour, posthumously on Wednesday.

Reacting to the award, SP MLA Maurya tweeted in Hindi, “By giving Padma Vibhushan posthumously to Netaji Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Government of India has made a mockery of Netaji’s stature, work and contributions to the nation. If Netaji had to be respected then he should have been honoured with Bharat Ratna.”

Similar views were expressed by party spokesperson I P Singh.

“Except the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour, no other honour befits the son of the soil, Late Mulayam Singh Yadav. An announcement should be made to give Bharat Ratna to our respected Netaji without any delay,” Singh tweeted.

Yadav, the Samajwadi Party founder and three-time Uttar Pradesh chief minister, died on October 10 last year.

  • Congress leader Antony falls silent after son’s tryst with BBC documentary

Congress leader Antony falls silent after son’s tryst with BBC documentary

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: One of Congress’s top-notch leader A K Antony has reportedly gone into a shell after his son Anil Antony quit his party post, alleging “intolerant calls to retract a tweet”, in which he had defied his party line and criticised a BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, terming it a “dangerous precedent”.

According to those in the know of things, 82-year-old Antony, who currently holds the record of being the longest-serving Defence Minister in the country, is deeply upset over a remark made by his junior colleague Jairam Ramesh.

Without naming, Ramesh drew a comparison between former Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy’s son — Chandy Oommen — and Antony’s son Anil Antony.

“A tale of two sons of two CMs from the same state. One is a Bharat Yatri and walking tirelessly, mostly barefoot to unite our nation in the Bharat Jodo Yatra. The other is reveling in his day in the Sun today having ignored his duties to the party and the yatra,” the former Union minister Ramesh wrote on his Twitter handle.

After his term ended in the Upper House in April last year, Antony returned to the state capital to his house here.

Since then, other than his occasional visits to the office in the state party headquarters, he is rarely seen in public party functions. During a recent party meeting, he asked all in the party presently divided as always amongst various faction leaders to keep aside all differences and focus on the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

Antony, who is known for always keeping a low profile, is also known for his sensitive nature.

A media critic on condition of anonymity said Antony is perhaps going through a very tough time because of the way his son reacted.

“Knowing the Congress leaders’ mindset, it can be said that the attack is not against Anil, but against Antony. When in Delhi, Antony has always wielded the sword of discipline against erring state leaders by prevailing upon the party’s high command. And when it came to the distribution of party tickets, his was the last word. The ground rule in the state unit of the party in the past over two decades was never to rub Antony on the wrong way,” said the critic.

Incidentally, yesterday when he came to attend a private function, Antony ducked the media’s questions on his son saying that he is in a private function.

Now all eyes will be on the ongoing Assembly session as the treasury benches will lose no chance to hit the Congress-led opposition when they take Antony and his son’s statement to checkmate the opposition.

BJP leader shot dead in Manipur; prime accused surrenders

    [ad_1]

Imphal: A BJP leader was shot dead in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Tuesday, following which the prime accused surrendered before the police while another person was arrested, a senior officer said.

Laishram Rameshwor Singh, the convenor of ex-servicemen cell of the saffron party’s state unit, was murdered near the gates of his residence in Kshetri Leikai area in the morning, Thoubal Superintendent of Police Haobijam Jogeshchandra said.

Two people came in a car without a registration number and shot at Singh from a close range around 11 am, he said.

The 50-year-old man received a bullet injury on his chest and was taken to a private hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Hours after the incident, the man driving the vehicle, identified as Naorem Ricky Pointing Singh, was arrested, Jogeshchandra told reporters.

The driver, who hails from Keinou in Bishnupur district, was apprehended in Haobam Marak area in Imphal West district.

Police launched a massive manhunt for the prime accused, identified as 46-year-old Ayekpam Keshorjit, and appealed to him to surrender, while warning people against providing him with shelter.

Sometime after that, the prime accused surrendered before the police at Commando Complex in Imphal West district. He hails from Haobam Marak.

A .32 caliber licensed pistol, two magazines and nine cartridges were seized from his possession.

An empty case of .32 caliber bullet was also seized from the spot, he said.

Naorem Ricky Pointing Singh was driving the vehicle while Ayekpam Keshorjit opened fire on the BJP leader, the SP said.

On being asked about the motive behind the murder, he said that further investigation is underway.

BJP state unit vice president Ch Chidananda Singh told PTI, “We strongly condemn this cowardly act… Stringent action should be taken against the culprits.”

Karnataka Cong leader slams RSS for trying to ‘link’ with Netaji

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Congress MLA from Bengaluru, Dinesh Gundu Rao on Monday attacked the Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangh and raised questions over the RSS’s attempts to link with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Wishing people on the occasion of birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, MLA Dinesh on his social media handle stated that, “Netaji was against the ideologies of RSS. He never believed in RSS philosophy.”

“RSS is planning to make a grand celebration of Netaji’s birth anniversary. But, Netaji never identified with RSS and now suddenly what is the reason for sudden love for him?”

“Netaji never supported the RSS philosophy of one nation, one religion and one language. Netaji’s ideology included all philosophies and he was for taking people of all religions along. Why is RSS trying to hijack Netaji, who had a different ideology now?” he questioned.

“RSS contributed nothing for the Indian independence struggle and tried to project the heroes of the freedom struggle as its people. Sometime ago, RSS tried to hijack Bhagat Singh, when it came to light that he was against RSS philosophy, Bhagat Singh was relegated to the corner. Now it is the turn of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose,” Rao said.

“Netaji’s daughter Anita Bose has opposed the celebration of birthday by the RSS. By celebrating his birthday, RSS is projecting Netaji as Hindutvavadi. Netaji was like us as a Hindu and never believed in Hindutva philosophy,” he underlined.

Turkey condemns burning of Qur’an during far-right protest in Sweden

Turkey has condemned a demonstration involving the burning of Qur’ans in Sweden on Saturday, further inflaming tensions between the two countries amid Stockholm’s Nato bid.

The protest in Stockholm, which took place under heavy police protection in front of Turkey’s embassy, gathered about 100 people and a crowd of reporters, Agence France-Presse reported.

Far-right politician Rasmus Paludan, who staged the event, gave an hour-long speech against Islam and immigration before setting fire to a copy of the Qur’an.

A day prior, Turkey’s foreign ministry summoned Sweden’s ambassador over the permission granted to Paludan’s protest. It was the second time Sweden’s ambassador to Turkey has been summoned this month, after having had to answer for a 12 January stunt during which a Kurdish group hung an effigy of Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in Stockholm.

Worldwide condemnations pour in over Sweden allowing Quran burning

On Sunday, several countries worldwide continued to condemn Sweden allowing a politician to burn a copy of the Quran, Islam’s holy book, under police protection in Stockholm.

With permission from the government, Rasmus Paludan, the leader of the Hard Line party, burned a copy of the Quran outside the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm on Saturday.

“Saudi Arabia calls for spreading the values of dialogue, tolerance and coexistence and rejects hatred and extremism,” the Saudi Foreign Ministry said.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirms the State of Qatar’s total rejection of all forms of hate speech based on religion or race and rejecting the involvement of sanctities in political disputes. Furthermore, the ministry warns that hate campaigns against Islam and the discourse of Islamophobia witnessed a dangerous escalation through the continued frequent calls for repeated targeting of Muslims worldwide,” Qatar said.

The incident “hurts Muslims’ sentiments across the world and marks serious provocation,” Kuwait’s foreign minister, Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al Jaber Al Sabah, said in statements cited by the state-run Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

He called the international community “to shoulder responsibility by stopping such unacceptable acts and denouncing all forms of hatred and extremism and bringing the perpetrators to accountability.”

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry decried the Quran burning as a “disgraceful act.”

A ministry statement warned that this “disgraceful act provokes the feelings of hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide.”

“These extremist practices are inconsistent with the values of respect for others, freedom of belief, human rights and fundamental human freedoms,” it added.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said some European countries, under the false pretext of advocating Freedom of speech, “allow extremist and radical elements to spread hatred against Islamic sanctities and values.”

Kanaani said despite the strong emphasis on human rights in Islam, Europeans continue to “institutionalize anti-Islam sentiment and Islamophobia” in their societies.

Pakistan also condemned the burning of the Holy Quran in Sweden, describing it as a “senseless and provocative Islamophobic act.”

“This senseless and provocative Islamophobic act hurts the religious sensitivities of over 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide,” said the Pakistani Foreign Ministry.

Islamabad urged the international community to show a “common resolve” against Islamophobia, xenophobia, intolerance and incitement to violence based on religion or belief and work together to promote inter-faith harmony and peaceful coexistence.

Morocco said it was “astonished” the authorities had allowed it to take place “in front of the Swedish forces of order.”
