Staffers at Project Veritas told board members earlier this month that O’Keefe was “outright cruel” to his employees, the Daily Beast reported.

“I’m a hard guy to work for sometimes,” O’Keefe said in the video released on Monday, acknowledging that he could be “very hurried” when interacting with staff.

Democratic consulting firms targeted by Project Veritas won $120,000 in damages from a federal court jury last year, in connection with the actions of one of the organization’s former operatives.

O’Keefe said in the video that he didn’t know why he had been ousted — “or, specifically, why this is happening suddenly, right now.”

In the video, he recounted a weekslong conflict with the organization’s board that culminated in his separation from the group. He left the door open to continue his work.

“Our mission continues on. I’m not done,” O’Keefe said. “The mission will perhaps take on a new name.”

US officer fed details to far-right leader before Capitol attack, messages show

    [ad_1]

A police officer frequently provided Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio with internal information about law enforcement operations in the weeks before other members of the far-right group stormed the US Capitol, according to messages shown at the trial of Tarrio and four associates.

In court in Washington DC on Wednesday, a federal prosecutor showed jurors a string of messages that Shane Lamond, a Metropolitan police lieutenant, exchanged with Tarrio in the run-up to the attack on the Capitol on 6 January 2021. Lamond, an intelligence officer, was responsible for monitoring groups like the Proud Boys.

On 6 January, supporters of Donald Trump stormed Congress in an attempt to block certification of Joe Biden’s election win. Nine deaths have been linked to the riot, including suicides among law enforcement

Less than three weeks before the riot, Lamond warned Tarrio that the FBI and Secret Service were “all spun up” over talk on an Infowars internet show that the Proud Boys planned to dress as Biden supporters on inauguration day.

A justice department prosecutor, Conor Mulroe, asked a government witness, the FBI special agent Peter Dubrowski, how common it was for law enforcement to disclose internal information in that fashion.

“I’ve never heard of it,” Dubrowski said.

Tarrio was arrested in Washington two days before the Capitol attack and charged with burning a Black Lives Matter banner taken from a historic Black church in December 2020. He was released and was not in Washington on 6 January.

In a message to Tarrio on 25 December 2020, Lamond said Metropolitan police investigators had asked him to identify Tarrio from a photograph. He warned Tarrio that police might be seeking a warrant for his arrest.

On the day of his arrest, Tarrio posted a message to other Proud Boys leaders that said: “The warrant was just signed.”

Before trial, Tarrio’s attorneys said Lamond’s testimony would be crucial, supporting Tarrio’s claims he was looking to avoid violence.

In court, Mulroe said Lamond asserted his fifth amendment privilege against self-incrimination. Tarrio’s attorneys have accused prosecutors of bullying Lamond into keeping quiet by warning the officer he could be charged with obstructing the investigation into Tarrio, a Miami resident who was the national chairman of the Proud Boys. Prosecutors deny that claim.

Tarrio’s attorney Sabino Jauregui said other messages showed that Tarrio cooperated with police and provided useful information. Jauregui said prosecutors “dragged [Lamond’s] name through the mud” and falsely insinuated he is a “dirty cop” who had an inappropriate relationship with Tarrio.

“That was their theme over and over again,” Jauregui told the presiding US district judge, Timothy Kelly.

Lamond was placed on administrative leave in February 2022, according to Mark Schamel, an attorney who said Lamond aided in Tarrio’s arrest for burning the banner. On Wednesday, Schamel said Lamond’s job required him to communicate with protesting groups and his conduct “was appropriate and always focused on the protection of the citizens of Washington DC”.

“At no time did Lt Lamond ever assist or support the hateful and divisive agenda of any of the various groups that came to DC to protest,” Schamel said. “More importantly, Lt Lamond is a decorated official who does not condone the hateful rhetoric or the illegal conduct on January 6 and was only communicating with these individuals because the mission required it.”

Tarrio and four lieutenants are charged with seditious conspiracy for what prosecutors say was a plot to stop the peaceful transfer of power.

Proud Boys members describe the group as a politically incorrect men’s club for “western chauvinists”. They often brawl with antifascist activists.

In a message to Tarrio on 18 December 2020, Lamond said other investigators had asked if the Proud Boys were racist. The officer said he told them the group had Black and Latino members, “so [it was] not a racist thing”.

“It’s not being investigated by the FBI, though. Just us,” Lamond added.

    “Awesome,” Tarrio replied.

In another exchange, Lamond asked Tarrio if he called in a tip claiming responsibility for the banner burning.

“I did more than that,” Tarrio said. “It’s on my social media.”

In a message to Tarrio on 11 December 2020, Lamond told him about the whereabouts of antifascist activists. The officer asked Tarrio if he should share that information with uniformed officers or keep it to himself.

Two days later, Tarrio asked Lamond what the police department’s “general consensus” was about the Proud Boys.

“That’s too complicated for a text answer,” Lamond replied. “That’s an in-person conversation over a beer.”

Adani-Hindenburg row: SC agrees to hear fresh PIL of Congress leader on Feb 17

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear on February 17 a fresh plea of a Congress leader seeking investigation under the supervision of a sitting apex court judge against the Adani Group of companies in light of the allegations made by the US-based Hindenburg Research.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha took note of the submissions of a lawyer, representing Congress leader Jaya Thakur, that the plea needed an urgent hearing.

The bench initially agreed to list the PIL for hearing on February 24 and later decided to hear on Friday after the lawyer pointed out that two other PILs are listed on February 17.

Thakur has also sought a direction for investigating the role of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and the State Bank of India (SBI) in investing huge amounts of public money in Adani Enterprises.

On Monday, the Centre had agreed to the apex court’s proposal to set up a panel of experts to look into strengthening the regulatory mechanisms for the stock market following the recent Adani group shares crash triggered by Hindenburg Research’s fraud allegations.

The top court seized two petitions alleging exploitation of innocent investors and “artificial crashing” of the Adani Group’s stock value.

CM KCR said that the efforts put by Sevalal to preserve the unique nature worship, spiritual outlook and socio-cultural way of life of people living in the forests is commendable.

Girlfriend of Proud Boys leader pleaded fifth about plan to occupy government buildings

capitol breach south carolina arrest 20686

Notably, prosecutors’ unsuccessful effort to glean information from Flores stands in contrast to the Jan. 6 select committee. Two investigators familiar with her interview — an informal, untranscribed appearance in early 2022 — say that while she was a reluctant witness and initially planned to plead the Fifth, she ultimately agreed to answer some questions about the document.

“Instead of pleading the Fifth, we did an interview with her,” one of the investigators said, speaking on condition of anonymity to describe information the committee had not publicly released. “She gave us the name of Samuel Armes as the name of the individual who wrote the document.”

Armes, who knew Flores through their shared cryptocurrency advocacy, would interview with select committee investigators in July. He accused Flores of “blame-shifting” by pinning the authorship of the “1776 Returns” document on him. Rather, Armes said that in the summer of 2020, he did some informal “war-gaming” about what might happen if a sitting president refused to leave office after the election. Flores, he told the panel, expressed interest in his thoughts, which he says he shared with her via a Google drive.

Armes said Flores or someone else she shared the document with must have taken his rough ideas and morphed them into a tactical plan with overt references to 1776, a reference to the Capitol as the “Winter Palace” and a plan to “storm” government buildings.

Prosecutors indicated they interviewed Armes too — in October 2022, three months after the select committee spoke to him.

The select committee investigators said they found Armes to be more forthcoming than Flores, who they said exhibited a “general apprehension.” Flores didn’t respond to messages and emails seeking comment.

“She acted like she didn’t know what it was at all,” said one of the investigators.

The two investigators said Flores indicated she had shared the document with Tarrio to impress him during a sensitive phase in their relationship and disclaimed specific knowledge about its contents.

During the trial of Tarrio and his allies, prosecutors displayed text messages in which Flores boasts to Tarrio about the “brilliance” of her 1776 Returns document and suggests she would pitch it elsewhere if Tarrio wouldn’t use it.

“If you don’t like my plan, let me know. I will pitch elsewhere. But I want you to be the executor and benefactor of my brilliance,” she wrote, asking him not to “play games” with her.

“I’m not playing games,” Tarrio responded.

Tarrio notably used the phrase “The Winter Palace” in conversations about the Capitol with at least two other people in the days before and on Jan. 6.

The select committee, like prosecutors, ultimately couldn’t pinpoint the precise authorship of the “1776 Returns” document, a detail that remains a mystery to this day.

Prosecutors revealed new information about their interactions with Armes and Flores in response to an effort by one of Tarrio’s co-defendants, Dominic Pezzola, to seek a mistrial. Pezzola’s attorney Roger Roots suggested that Armes’ training to be in the intelligence community — even though he ultimately pursued a career in crypto — suggested that the government itself authored the incriminating “1776 Return” document.

“The government strongly disagrees with Pezzola’s characterization of both the facts and the record with respect to these assertions,” Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jason McCullough and Conor Mulroe wrote. “The government robustly agrees with defendant Pezzola that it would have been egregiously improper for a member of the U.S. Intelligence Community to have conducted a domestic intelligence operation targeting Enrique Tarrio, a U.S. Person, and providing him with a plan to ‘storm’ (or ‘occupy’ or ‘sit in’) House and Senate Office Buildings on January 6.”

“It would have been even more improper,” they continued, “for a member of the U.S. Intelligence Community to send this plan to the leader of the Proud Boys when, just months before, then-President Trump had exhorted the Proud Boys to ‘stand back and stand by’ during a nationally televised debate.”

Thanjavur: Velupillai Prabhakaran, the leader of Eelam Tamils in Sri Lanka is doing well, a top Tamil nationalist leader claimed here on Monday and said a conducive atmosphere prevails for him to appear now.

In a press conference, Pazha Nedumaran, a noted Tamil nationalist leader, prefixed his declaration as a ‘true announcement’ and said the international (political) atmosphere and fierce opposition to Rajapaksas by the Sinhalese people in Sri Lanka have created the right conditions for the leader of the Eelam Tamils, Prabhakaran to emerge.

Asserting that the LTTE leader is doing well, Nedumaran said the announcement would end ‘planned’ suspicions spread about him. Prabhakaran is all set to soon announce a plan for the dawn of the Eelam Tamils in Sri Lanka, he said.

He appealed to Tamils in Sri Lanka and the Tamils living in all other parts of the world to stand together and extend him their full support. Till such time the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were powerful, they did not allow any forces inimical to India to find a toehold in the regions held by them in Sri Lanka, he said.

They not only opposed such forces but also have not received any support from such nations opposed to India, he added.

It may be recalled that Prabhakaran was killed in 2009 in the war between Sri Lankan Army and the LTTE. ‘Eelam‘ in Tamil denotes the homeland of the Tamil people.

TDP leader Lokesh promises to bring down fuel prices

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Exuding confidence that Telugu Desam Party (TDP) will form the government again in Andhra Pradesh, party’s national General Secretary, Nara Lokesh, on Sunday promised that it will bring down the prices of diesel and petrol.

Lokesh, who was on his padayatra ‘Yuva Galam’, interacted with an autorickshaw driver in Gangadhara Nellore Assembly segment. When the TDP leader enquired about the diesel price, the auto driver replied that it is Rs 95.39 per litre. “How come you are getting it for a lesser price,” Lokesh asked and the driver informed him that he fills the fuel in Tamil Nadu as he lives in the border area.

“It is certain that the TDP is going to come to power again and the taxes on fuel will be reduced to control the prices and there will be no need for you to cross the state border to fill uel to your vehicle,” Lokesh told him.

Later, at Eedigapalle, the Gouda community representatives met Lokesh and submitted a memorandum to him explaining the problems they were facing. Responding to them, Lokesh promised all the steps to resolve their issues once the TDP is back in power and his party is committed to the welfare of the toddy-tapper community.

He also promised to take measures for construction of roads and also extend financial assistance and subsidies to them through the BC Welfare Corporation. “Our sole aim is this psycho should go and cycle should come back,” Lokesh said.

“My mike may be grabbed from me but my voice can not be choked. The people are my strength. I always raise my voice against this atrocious rule,” he said while addressing people at KM Puram of Karvetinagaram.

Pointing out that several leaders undertook padyatras earlier in the State, Lokesh asked why problems were being created only for him when he began his venture. “My campaign vehicle and sound system have been seized while my mike was grabbed from me by the police. But the police can not choke my voice and I will raise my tone even if there is no mike,” he said.

  • Telangana BJP leader sets campaign tone with threat to demolish Sectt domes

Telangana BJP leader sets campaign tone with threat to demolish Sectt domes

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Telangana is looking for emotive issues for polarisation as it embarked on a major state-wide exercise to bolster its prospects in the Assembly elections scheduled later this year.

State BJP chief Bandi Sanjay launched 15-day-long campaign on February 10 with a threat to demolish domes of new Secretariat building if his party was voted to power in the next elections. He says the domes of the new Secretariat reflect the culture of Nizam and hence they will be demolished if BJP was voted to power.

BJP will be conducting 11,000 street corner meetings across the state till February 25. With the slogan “People’s issues BJP’s assurance (Praja Gosa, BJP Bharosa)” the meetings will be held in all 118 Assembly constituencies in the state.

The campaign is aimed at exposing the failures of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government and highlighting achievements of the BJP-led government at the Centre.

Senior party leaders have been made in-charges of the Assembly constituencies to oversee the campaign. Speakers at the street corner meetings are speaking about the alleged irregularities and failures of the BRS government.

This is the first state-wide campaign undertaken by the BJP as part of its Mission 2023 to come to power in the state.

Sanjay set the tone for the street meetings and perhaps for the poll campaign by raking up a controversy. Known as a rabble-rouser, the MP from Karimnagar is apparently trying to build a narrative which suits the party’s game plan to capture power.

Political observers say the BJP leader deliberately chooses an issue to polarise voters. Addressing a street corner meeting in Kukatpally constituency in Hyderabad, he trained guns at BRS and its friendly party All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM).

BJP leaders have been targeting BRS over alleged policy of minority appeasement and its friendly ties with AIMIM.

It’s in this context that Sanjay faulted with the design of new Secretariat building to train guns on BRS and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

He went on to the extent of threatening that if voted to power, BJP would demolish the domes of the new state Secretariat building as they reflect the culture of Nizams.

Sanjay alleged that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao turned the secretariat into a tomb like the Taj Mahal to please AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi.

“If BJP comes to power, it will destroy the symbols of Nizam’s culture in the state. We will make changes in the state secretariat so that it reflects the Indian and Telangana culture,” he said.

The seven-storey structure with a built-up area of 7 lakh square feet built at a cost of nearly Rs 650 crore is ready for the inauguration.

The state government has named the new Secretariat complex after Dr B.R. Ambedkar. Chief Minister KCR already stated that it reflects the pride of Telangana and would stand as a role model for other states.

Sanjay alleged that BRS and AIMIM are one and the same. He said the two parties, which were sharing power in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), were enacting a drama for the Assembly elections.

He was apparently referring to AIMIM floor leader in Telangana Assembly Akbaruddin Owaisi’s statement that his party would contest 50 seats in the coming Assembly elections. Owaisi had also exuded confidence that AIMIM would win 15 seats, up from the current seven seats.

The BJP leader dared AIMIM to contest all Assembly seats if it was sincere in taking on BRS.

Going a step ahead, Sanjay challenged municipal administration and urban development minister K.T. Rama Rao to demolish mosques on roads in the old city of Hyderabad, considered a stronghold of AIMIM.

This is not the first time that the state BJP chief has sparked a controversy with his remarks.

Sanjay had allegedly delivered a hate speech in May. Complaints were filed against him at various police stations in the state for making provocative remarks against mosques and madarsas.

The BJP leader demanded digging under all mosques. Alleging that Muslim rulers in Telangana demolished several temples and built mosques over them, he demanded digging work at all mosques, saying there was a possibility of finding Shiva Lingams underneath.

The BJP MP also stated that if BJP comes to power in Telangana, it will abolish all madrasas, do away with reservation for Muslims, and remove Urdu as the second official language.

The saffron party has been trying to exploit sensitive issues for political mileage. Be it KCR’s friendship with Owaisi, four per cent reservation for Muslims, the state government not officially celebrating September 17, second official language to the state or the demand to rename Hyderabad as Bhagynagar, the BJP leaders always tried to look for issues which lead to communal polarisation.

The BJP has been on the offensive ever since it bagged four Lok Sabha seats in the state in 2019 and scored victories in two Assembly by-elections and significantly increased its tally in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

Projecting BJP as the only viable alternative, the party leaders see a realistic chance of coming to power in the state in 2023.

Political analysts say historically BJP has been raking up emotive issues which could help in garnering votes of the majority community, especially in constituencies in and around Hyderabad and other urban pockets of the state.

They say Muslim rule in erstwhile Hyderabad State, the tumultuous developments of post-Independence leading to Hyderabad’s accession with Indian Union, the political domination of AIMIM in parts of Hyderabad and the alleged appeasement policies of successive governments- all provide ammunition to the BJP’s polarisation politics.

After Bandi Sanjay became the BJP state president in 2020, the party has gone into an overdrive to draw political mileage from sensitive issues. In what is seen as an attempt to challenge AIMIM on its home turf, he launched his state-wide Praja Sangram Yatra from Bhagyalaxmi temple abutting historic Charminar.

In fact this temple, whose legality was questioned several times in the past sparking communal tensions, has become the focal point of BJP’s politics over last couple of years.

BJP launched its poll campaign in GHMC elections in 2020 from the same temple. It was also visited by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during GHMC polls and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in July during BJP’s national executive committee meeting here.

BJP MLA Raja Singh’s suspension by the party after he uploaded a video containing derogatory remarks about Prophet Mohammad last year was seen as an attempt by the saffron party’s central leadership to avoid another embarrassment at the international level after Nupur Sharma’s offensive remarks.

As his derogatory video sparked massive protests and even led to disturbances, the BRS government cracked the whip by sending him to jail after invoking Preventive Detention (PD) Act.

The MLA from Goshamahal constituency in Hyderabad has 101 criminal cases registered against him since 2004. According to police, he was involved in 18 communal offences.

The tone and tenor of BJP leaders at public meetings in recent months show that Raja Singh was not just a flash in the pan. Bandi Sanjay and other state BJP leaders too have been making provocative statements.

With Assembly elections a few months away, political observers believe that the saffron party will raise the pitch of its divisive politics to capture power.

  • BRS leader Kadiyam used Telangana sentiment for his growth: Sharmila

BRS leader Kadiyam used Telangana sentiment for his growth: Sharmila

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: YS Sharmila on Wednesday launched a bitter attack against senior Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader and former minister Kadiyam Srihari.

Addressing a massive public meeting in Station Ghanpur in Jangaon district, as part of her Praja Prasthanam Padayatra, YS Sharmila taunted Srihari for his failure to get even a degree college for the constituency while serving as minister for 14 years.

“I today express extreme levels of disappointment when I say that Kadiyam Srihari is no hermit, nor honest, and had cheated his public by abusing the sentiment of Telangana consistently, and enjoying portfolios shamelessly.”

While explaining her reason for setting up YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP), she said it was to expose dishonest leaders.

“Look at Gajwel and then look at Station Ghanpur that boasts of having produced two deputy chief ministers. Right from double bedroom houses to 100-bed hospital, and leather park, food processing units and textile units, all their promises have been shallow. Worst is that despite being tall Dalit leaders, they always kept mum whenever Dalits were attacked in any part of the state. It is deplorable to note that the constituency doesn’t have a degree college, while many mandals don’t have junior colleges.”

She blamed both leaders for constantly unleashing cheap politics and barbs against each other.

“While one blames the other for infamous sexual advances, the other is shamed in the name of corruption. It is shameful on Srihari’s part to brand late YSR as anti-Telangana. Rather he should remind himself about the failed promises of his chief minister KCR that amounts to immeasurable backstabbing of the four-crore Telangana people.”

Sharmila said that it was late YSR (former chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh and Sharmila’s father) who brought Devadula waters to the parched lands, and built Station Ghanpur, Nawabpet, and Raghunathpalli reservoirs. “It was YSR who built 30000 pakka houses in five years, besides gifting a polytechnic college and a railway overbridge,” she said.
