New Delhi: Open source solution provider Red Hat will lay off nearly 4 per cent of its global workforce, or about 760 employees, the media reported on Monday.

The North Carolina-based software major has about 19,000 employees across the world.

According to The Herald Sun, Red Hat CEO Matt Hicks called the job cuts “a decision our leadership team was truly hoping we could avoid”.

    MS Education Academy

“This decision is now appropriate to ensure Red Hat’s ability to compete in a new environment,” he was quoted as saying.

IBM acquired Red Hat in 2019 for nearly $34 billion in one of the largest software acquisitions in history.

In an email to employees, Hicks said the cuts “will focus on general and administrative” positions, and not affect positions “directing selling to customers or building out products”.

He said employees in some countries would be notified of layoffs on Monday, while others would be told over the course of the current fiscal quarter.

Earlier this year, IBM confirmed it planned to lay off around 3,900 employees from its global 260,000 workforce.

The IBM layoffs are a result of the spinoff of IT infrastructure services provider Kyndryl business and part of the AI unit called ‘Watson Health’.

The layoffs were likely to cause a charge of $300 million in the January-March period to the company, according to IBM Chief Financial Officer James Kavanaugh.

Hyderabad: Sharmila attempts to lay siege to TSPSC office; detained

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) chief YS Sharmila attempted to besiege the TSPSC office to protest against the TSPSC paper leak case. However, she was detained by the police, on her way before she reached the TSPSC office.

Sharmila alongside YSRTP activists staged a protest on the road in front of the office gate.

Following a ruckus, the police arrested Sharmila to avoid any possibility of tension due to the agitation.

Women police personnel bodily lifted Sharmila and shifted her to a waiting police vehicle. Other protesters were also detained by the police. She was later taken to a police station.

Earlier, the YSRTP leader alleged that only small fish were arrested in the paper leak case while the powerful ones were roaming freely. She demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Sharmila slammed the state government for not allowing her to stage a protest in a peaceful and democratic manner. She said whenever she is trying to protest, police are placing her under house arrest.

She alleged that hundreds of policemen were deployed around her house. “They have also issued a lookout notice for me. Am I a criminal,” she asked.

While protesting, Sharmila asked if arrests and filing cases would solve the fair demands of the students. Tensions prevailed after the YSR leader entered into arguments with the police.

The TSPSC conducted examinations on March 5 for 833 vacancies of Assistant Engineer, Municipal Assistant Engineer, Technical Officer, and Junior Technical Officer in various engineering departments.

A total of 55,000 candidates attempted the written exam.

However, the Commission suspected leakage of the question paper and complained to the police.

On March 13, the police arrested nine people, including two employees of the TSPSC.

Following the arrest of the accused, the Commission cancelled the exam and also postponed other exams scheduled to be held later this month.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand handed over the investigation to SIT.

  • Amazon deepens tech gloom as 503 firms lay off 1.5 lakh employees

Amazon deepens tech gloom as 503 firms lay off 1.5 lakh employees

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: As Amazon deepened the tech gloom with firing another 9,000 employees (it previously sacked 18,000), over 500 companies have laid off nearly 1.5 lakh workers to date this year.

According to latest data from layoff.fyi, a website that is tracking tech sector job cuts, 503 tech companies have laid off 148,165 employees to date.

After a dismal year for tech companies and startups in 2022 which saw at least 1.6 lakh employees being shown the door, 2023 started on a similar note.

About 1,046 tech companies — from Big Tech to startups — laid off more than 1.61 lakh employees last year.

In January alone, close to 1 lakh tech employees lost jobs globally, dominated by companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce and others.

Companies in the US cut 77,770 jobs in February, compared to 1,02,943 in January, with technology companies continuing to lead the layoff race, cutting 21,387 jobs last month, accounting for 28 per cent of all cuts.

Last week, Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced to sack an additional 10,000 employees via several job cut rounds in the coming months.

The fresh cuts come just four months after he laid off 11,000 employees, or 13 per cent of the company, in November last year.

Zuckerberg said that after restructuring, Meta plans to lift hiring and transfer freezes in each group.

Amazon on Monday announced to lay off another 9,000 employees in Amazon Web Services (AWS), Twitch, advertising, and HR.

The e-commerce giant initially eliminated 18,000 positions in January and as “we completed the second phase of our planning this month, it led us to these additional 9,000 role reductions”.

  • In another setback, Amazon to lay off 9,000 employees

In another setback, Amazon to lay off 9,000 employees

    [ad_1]

New York: Amazon announced on Monday it will lay off 9, 000 corporate and technology workers, eliminating jobs in addition to the 18,000 job cuts undertaken by the company in the last few months.

“As we’ve just concluded the second phase of our operating plan (OP2) this past week, I’m writing to share that we intend to eliminate about 9,000 more positions in the next few weeks mostly in AWS, PXT (People, Experience, and Technology), Advertising, and Twitch. This was a difficult decision, but one that we think is best for the company long term,” Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in a statement.

The 9,000 job cuts, which will be completed by mid to late April, are in addition to the massive 18, 000 layoffs that the company undertook since November last year.

Jassy said that “given the uncertain economy in which we reside, and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have chosen to be more streamlined in our costs and headcount” adding that the “overriding tenet of our annual planning” this year was to be leaner.

Jassy acknowledged people may question why the additional 9,000 job cuts were not announced together with the previous lay-offs.

“The short answer is that not all of the teams were done with their analyses in the late fall; and rather than rush through these assessments without the appropriate diligence, we chose to share these decisions as we’ve made them so people had the information as soon as possible,” Jassy said.

Technology giants Google, Microsoft, and Facebook have announced massive job cuts in the last few months, amid global economic uncertainty. Digital consumption soared during the years of the pandemic, prompting companies to diversify portfolios and scale up hiring.

But as consumers cut back on their digital footprint as normalcy returned after the pandemic, companies have been forced to restructure and cut costs.

Last week, Facebook parent Meta said it will lay off another 10,000 workers and will not fill another 5,000 positions, announcing the second round of significant job cuts by the tech major in four months.

The latest move came after Meta slashed approximately 13 percent of its workforce, or 11,000 jobs in November last year, in the single largest round of cuts in the company’s history.

In a Facebook post, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the job cuts will take place “over the next couple of months.”

“We expect to announce restructurings and layoffs in our tech groups in late April, and then our business groups in late May,” he wrote.

In January this year, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the company was slashing 12,000 jobs.

A day before Google’s announcement, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said his company will lay off 10,000 workers, or less than five per cent of its total workforce, as the technology giant aligns its cost structure with revenue and customer demand.

Delhi BJP to protest at Jantar Mantar on March 21, lay siege to Assembly on March 23

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The BJP has decided to intensify its agitation to put pressure on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, whom it alleged was the mastermind of the liquor scam, to resign.

The BJP believes that Kejriwal should resign on the basis of morality, and if he does not do so, the BJP will force him to resign.

Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, and Delhi BJP General Secretary Kuljeet Chahal disclosed the party’s strategy at a press conference here.

They said that the ED has been told by Delhi government officials that Kejriwal had directed them to implement the liquor policy, following which the latter has no right to continue as the Chief Minister.

For the last 15 days, the BJP is protesting in Delhi demanding the Chief Minister’s resignation.

Now after new revelations have come to the fore, BJP has decided to intensify the protest from March 16.

From March 16, the BJP will go door-to-door and distribute leaflets, in which full details of the irregularities, corruption and loot of Delhi’s government treasury used to implement the excise policy will be given to the people.

In support of this demand, the BJP will protest in the state Assembly during the upcoming session and all the ministers of Delhi will be ‘gheraoed’.

Bidhuri said that the arrest of former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia is not enough to expose the excise policy scam, but Kejriwal is the real mastermind of the scam.

BJP leaders said that Kejriwal calls for honesty in politics but he has done maximum corruption in politics. Therefore, his resignation is the only solution and BJP will continue the protest till Kejriwal does not resign.

Facebook-parent Meta to lay off another 10,000 jobs

    [ad_1]

New York: Facebook-parent Meta on Tuesday said it will lay off another 10,000 workers and will not fill another 5,000 positions, announcing the second round of significant job cuts by the tech major in four months.

The latest move comes after Meta slashed approximately 13 per cent of its workforce, or 11,000 jobs in November last year, in the single largest round of cuts in the company’s history.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the job cuts will take place “over the next couple of months.”

“We expect to announce restructurings and layoffs in our tech groups in late April, and then our business groups in late May,” he wrote.

In a “small number of cases, it may take through the end of the year to complete these changes,” he said.

The grim news for the tech industry came days after the Silicon Valley Bank, which catered to start-ups, collapsed.

“Overall, we expect to reduce our team size by around 10,000 people and to close around 5,000 additional open roles that we haven’t yet hired,” Zuckerberg said.

As of September 2022, Meta reported a headcount of 87,314, per a securities filings.

With 11,000 job cuts announced in November and the 10,000 announced on Tuesday, it would bring the firm’s headcount down to around 66,000, according to CNN.

Meta is among the big tech companies to undergo layoffs amid higher inflation, recession fears and pandemic-induced demand.

Earlier this year, Amazon, Google-parent Alphabet and Microsoft have announced major job cuts impacting tens of thousands of tech workers across the globe.

Shares of Meta rose more than 6 per cent in early trading on Tuesday following the announcement.

Ericsson to lay off 8,500 employees globally to cut costs

    [ad_1]

London: Swedish telecom gear-maker Ericsson is laying off about 8 per cent of its workforce, around 8,500 employees, to cut costs in the ongoing global macroeconomic conditions, the media reported on Friday.

According to an internal memo sent to employees, the company said the headcount reduction has been conveyed to employees in several countries.

“We see a potential to simplify and become more efficient throughout the company, especially when it comes to structural costs,” a company spokesperson told Bloomberg.

The telecom networking company earlier laid off at least 1,400 employees or 10 per cent of its workforce in Sweden after negotiating with unions.

The company said in a statement earlier this week that the company intended to conduct the job cut process through a voluntary programme after closing negotiations with employee unions, Barron’s had reported.

“Reducing headcount is never easy, and we will manage this with the utmost respect and professionalism. Further details are always communicated to the relevant staff first,” Ericsson said.

“The cost savings cover various areas such as reduction of consultants, streamlining of processes, reduced facilities, etc. As previously announced, it will also include head-count reduction,” Ericsson had added.

The Stockholm-headquartered company in December last year said it was aiming to slash costs by $880 million by the end of 2023.

Last month, Ericsson missed expectations for its fourth-quarter earnings.

The company joins a growing list of tech firms which have laid off thousands of employees in the recent months.

It had warned of reduced spending from customers in the US and other developed markets.

HP Inc to lay off 100 employees in Israel

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: PC and printer major HP Inc is laying off 100 employees and most of the job cuts will be in HP Indigo, which is engaged in the production of digital printing machines.

Some of the layoffs will also come from HP’s marketing system and headquarters, which manages sales activities in the country, according to the marker.com.

HP employs 2,600 people in Israel.

The company in November last year announced it will lay off nearly 4,000-6,000 employees by the end of 2025, which is between 7-11 per cent of its workforce.

The company announced a ‘Future Ready Transformation Plan’, estimating annualised gross run rate cost savings of at least $1.4 billion by the end of fiscal 2025, and restructuring and other charges of approximately $1 billion.

The company said in a statement that the decision in Israel “creates capacity to reinvest in growth priorities while adapting to current market challenges”.

“HP continues to innovate and create customer value and remains focused on driving the continued digitisation of industry with agility, creativity, and cutting-edge technologies. We are committed to treating people with transparency, fairness, compassion, and respect,” said the company.

HP laid off about 60 employees from its Netanya branch in the country in October last year.

HP Indigo Division is a division of HP’s Graphic Solutions Business.
