  • Lingayat vote bank appears shaky for ruling BJP in north Karnataka

Lingayat vote bank appears shaky for ruling BJP in north Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The north Karnataka region known for harmony and peaceful co-existence plays an important role in shaping the political scenario of the state.

Consisting of 13 districts, the voting pattern has seen a paradigm shift. The region, which was a Congress bastion, is now rallying behind the state’s ruling BJP.

The BJP wins a major chunk of seats from north Karnataka and Congress is struggling to return to its days of glory. The JD (S) has managed to show its existence. It appears, though, that cracks have developed in the Lingayat vote bank this time, giving an opportunity to the Congress.

Among the 224 Assembly seats, the region has more than 100. A major chunk of seats are won by the BJP.

After the elevation of Mallikarjun Kharge as the Congress President, the party is hoping to make a comeback.

Political analysts explain that Opposition leader Siddaramaiah and Kharge’s combination will make magic for the party in north Karnataka region.

The ruling BJP in the state draws its core strength from north Karnataka and garners a major chunk of seats from the region.

Lingayat votes, which play an important role in elections in the region, were garnered by the BJP under the leadership of former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, a Lingayat strongman.

However, the ensured vote bank appears to be shaky this time.

A change of guard in the leadership, hostile posture of Lingayat seer Basava Jaya Mrutyunjaya Swamiji of Panchamasali sub sect, a war of words between senior BJP leaders of the region seems to affect the ruling BJP.

Gali Janardhana Reddy’s new party Kalyana Rajya Pragathi Paksha is also likely to pose a challenge to both Congress and BJP.

Janardhana Reddy has stated that in spite of national parties not attaching any importance, his party would make an impact in the upcoming Assembly elections.

The Kalyana Rajya Pragathi Paksha is likely to disturb national parties in Kalyan Karnataka region comprising districts of Raichur, Koppal, Kalaburagi, Bidar, Yadgir, Ballary and Vijanaynagara.

Basava Jaya Mrutyunjaya Swamiji has attacked Chief Minister Basavaraja Bommai for failing to give reservation for Panchamasali sub sect under OBC quota. Vijayapura BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal stated that it is a failure on part of Bommai and he has disappointed the community.

Minister for Large and Medium Industries Murugesh Nirani had charged that the Lingayat seer is acting on the behalf of the Congress.

However, the agitation for reservation is being taken up for years and the issue is likely to hit the prospectus of BJP in the upcoming elections, say analysts.

The BJP has got a shot in the arm by approving DPR for Kalasa-Banduri project which will mitigate the drinking water problem in major districts of north Karnataka.

The Congress has also organised a massive rally for speedy implementation of the project.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kalaburagi and Yadgir districts this month and laying the foundation stone and inauguration of more than Rs 10,000 crore for development works in the region is seen as an attempt to outreach to the people of North Karnataka.

The BJP is expecting a boost in 41 constituencies of the region.

Experts say that this time, it won’t be a cake walk for the saffron part in north Karnataka. However, the BJP camp is upbeat and confident that the Hindutva agenda will work for them.

  • Skeleton found from Secunderabad building gutted in fire

Skeleton found from Secunderabad building gutted in fire

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Making a breakthrough, rescue workers on Saturday found a human skeleton in a six-storeyed commercial building which was gutted in a massive fire on Thursday.

The rescue teams, which continued their efforts to collect clues of three missing persons, found the skeleton on the first floor of the building at Nallagutta on Ministers Road in Secunderabad.

The skeleton was removed from the debris and shifted to Gandhi Hospital for identification. Officials said a DNA test will be conducted to identify the body.

A search was on for two other missing persons. Two days after the fire destroyed the building in the busy Secunderabad area, the teams were unable to enter the premises due to the heat and smoke from smouldering rubble. However, the efforts by the firefighting personnel for cooling yielded some results on Saturday and some rescue workers managed to go in.

Waseem, Zaheer and Junaid were reported missing after the huge fire broke out in the building on Thursday. Some survivors said the three persons had gone to collect their belongings but were trapped.

Two fire service officers were injured while trying to douse the fire on Thursday. It took eight hours for the fire to be brought under control. As many as 23 fire tenders from various fire stations in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad were pressed into service.

The building is owned by Deccan Corporate, a manufacturer of T-shirts, uniforms, bags, gift articles and sports accessories. According to fire services officials, tons of cloth, flex rolls and chemicals were stored in the buildings. About 1,000 tons of inflammable material in the first-level cellar caused the rapid spread of fire.

Meanwhile, authorities were making arrangements for demolishing the building due to apprehension that it may collapse. The fire has weakened the structure.

However, the demolition is likely to begin in a couple of days as authorities are drawing plans to minimize the collateral damage to surrounding buildings, including houses.

Ramana Rao, Director NIIT, Warangal, officials of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the Clues team, the electricity department, and fire and police officials inspected the building on Friday.

Ramana Ro opined that the building is in dilapidated condition due to fire accident with slabs at some places falling down or developing cracks. He suggested that the building should not be used.

Following this, the police deployed force to prevent people from getting closer to the building.

Police said that based on the expert opinion, owners, and tenants of surrounding buildings have been asked to vacate their houses till further information. Police have also diverted the commuters from both access points of the fire accident place to avoid untoward incidents.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police said the footage collected from drone cameras shows that most of the ceiling is broken and has fallen down.

Meanwhile, state minister T. Srinivas Yadav on Saturday visited the spot and reviewed the rescue operation. He promised that the government will extend help to the families of the victims.

He also visited the adjacent residential area and interacted with the residents.
