  • Egyptian Prez, 180-member military contingent to be part of Republic Day

Egyptian Prez, 180-member military contingent to be part of Republic Day

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: India and Egypt are expected to sign around half-a-dozen Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in areas ranging from agriculture and digital during Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s visit to India.

The Egyptian President will be the chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations. A 180-member military contingent from Egypt will take part in the celebrations.

Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi on January 24 and will be greeted by Minister of State for External Affairs Rajkumar Ranjan Singh.

The next day, on January 25, the Egyptian President will hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a press statement will be made by the two leaders.

The visiting President will also meet Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar and attend a banquet hosted by President Droupadi Murmu.

Earlier in the day, he will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

The Egyptian President is also expected to interact with the Indian business community during his visit.

A commemorative stamp marking 75 years of diplomatic ties between India and Egypt will be released during the Egyptian President’s visit.

This will be the first time that the President of Egypt will be the chief guest at India’s Republic Day. El-Sisi will be the fifth West Asian leader to be the chief guest at Republic Day. This will El-Sisi’s third visit to India.

There have been personal interactions between the Egyptian leader and PM Modi.

The Prime Minister visited Cairo in August 2015 while El-Sisi was in India for the India-Africa Forum in October 2015 and on a bilateral state visit in September 2016.

The two leaders had also spoken over the phone in 2020. Apart from this, Egypt has been invited as a guest country for the G20 summit that will be held in India later this year.

There also have been several exchanges at minister-level, including the visit of the Indian Defence Minister and External Affairs minister last year to Egypt.

In terms of defence cooperation, the two countries have robust military cooperation. When it comes to the exercises, IAF or the Indian Air Force participated in the first-ever joint exercise in Egypt.

Notably, the first-ever joint exercise between the special forces of the Indian Army and the Egyptian Army named ‘Exercise Cyclone-I’ is considered important. The exercise, which will boost defence cooperation between the two countries, is underway in Jodhpur.

The deepening of the defence cooperation is expected to be discussed during the Egyptian leader’s visit.

Egypt has also shown some interest in purchasing Tejas light combat aircraft with officials from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in touch with the Egyptian side for more discussions.

In terms of the current economic situation, like much of the world, the Arab state was hit hard by Covid Pandemic and is battling an economic crisis. This is also an area that is likely to be discussed during the visit.

The Arab State is relying on the resumption of tourist flows and has come up with certain economic liberalization polices. Egypt is also looking at Indian companies for investment that would generate employment.

The issues pertaining to wheat supply are also expected to be discussed between the two countries. India supported Egypt and made an exemption of up to 61,000 tonnes of wheat to Egypt in May last year in three tranches despite a temporary ban on exports imposed by the government.

Other than the importance of its geostrategic location, specially the Suez Canal from where twelve percent of the world trade passes, Egypt is also one of the most populous states in the Arab world which makes it a key player in the politics of the Arab world.

From a commercial perspective, Egypt is a major market for India in terms of it being a gateway to Europe and Africa. When it comes to the bilateral trade between the two countries which was recorded at an all-time high of US dollars 7.2 billion between 2021 and 2022, the two countries hope for trade to increase to about USD 12 billion in the next five years.

On security and counter-terrorism cooperation, there is a joint working group between India and Egypt and the next meeting of the joint committee is scheduled for next month after the Egyptian President’s visit.

Notably, in forums like OIC or Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Egypt has never supported Pakistan. Islamabad has frequently raked up Kashmir issue in the organisation.

Last year, India had invited leaders of the five Central Asian Republics, who were to visit Delhi for the India-Central Asia Summit, as chief guests for the Republic Day celebrations. However, the visit was cancelled due to the rise in COVID-19 cases.

  • Shubman Gill has potential, looks like mini-Rohit Sharma: Ramiz Raja

Shubman Gill has potential, looks like mini-Rohit Sharma: Ramiz Raja

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja showered rich praise on India opener Shubman Gill for his performances in ODIs this year, saying he has got enough potential to succeed and even compared to his opening partner, India captain Rohit Sharma.

“Shubman Gill looks like a mini-Rohit Sharma. He has extra time and looks good. He has enough potential. Aggression will also develop with time. He doesn’t need to change anything. He scored a double hundred recently,” said Raja in a video on his Youtube channel.

Gill was unbeaten on 40 in India’s successful chase of 109 against New Zealand at Raipur, while Rohit top-scored with an eye-catchy 51. “Batting was easy for India because they have an outstanding batter like Rohit Sharma. He plays exceedingly well. He is an amazing striker of hook-and-pull shots, so a 108-run chase becomes easy,” added Raja, a former Pakistan cricketer.

On Saturday, India’s bowlers, led by Mohammed Shami, put up an impressive show to bowl out New Zealand for 108, setting the base for another series victory for the hosts’. Shami (3/18) and Mohammed Siraj found seam movement to run through the New Zealand top and middle order, reducing them to 15/5 at one stage.

Though Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner played some defiant knocks, they were unable to bail their side out of trouble and the pressure maintained by Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav.

“India beat New Zealand at their own game. It was an outstanding bowling performance from them. Their length bowling, seam position was very good. Indian bowlers may not have a lot of pace but their ability to bowl in one spot means that they had a complete performance,” observed Raja.

Raja also pointed out how India continued to dominate at home and added that if Pakistan wants to become a better cricketing side, they need to learn from their neighbours on how to be a strong force to reckon with at home.

“It’s tough to beat India in India. This is something to learn for other sub-continent teams, including Pakistan. It’s because Pakistan have enough potential, but the home performance in terms of results or series wins is not as consistent as Team India. This is an important milestone for India in the World Cup year.”

  • Secunderabad fire: Building to be demolished amid search for remains of 2 men

Secunderabad fire: Building to be demolished amid search for remains of 2 men

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Municipal authorities in Hyderabad have decided to demolish the six storeyed building which was gutted in a huge fire three days ago while the search continued on Sunday for remains of two missing persons.

For the fourth day rescue workers continued their operation to trace the remains of two men in the rubble at the commercial building at Nallagutta on Ministers Road in Secunderabad.

Skeletal remains of one person were found on Saturday and the same were preserved at Gandhi Hospital for DNA analysis.

Three workers Waseem, Zaheer and Junaid were reported missing after the huge fire broke out in the building. Some survivors said the three persons had gone to collect their belongings but were trapped.

Two fire service officers were injured while trying to douse the fire on Thursday. It took eight hours for the fire to be brought under control. As many as 23 fire tenders from various fire stations in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad were pressed into service.

With smoke still emanating from some parts of the building and small fires getting reignited due to inflammable material, the personnel of Disaster Response Force (DRF) and fire services were moving cautiously.

The rescue teams were using drone cameras to collect the footage from different floors and accordingly plan their operation.

The massive fire, which broke out on January 19 and raged for over eight hours, has weakened the structure and experts have warned that it may collapse any time.

The officials of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have decided to demolish the structure. However, they made it clear that they will wait till the remains of two missing workers are traced.

Massive debris and huge amounts of inflammable material has made the task of rescue workers difficult.

Officials said the latest technology will be used to demolish the building and all precautions will be taken to ensure that the adjoining buildings are not damaged.

GHMC Town Planning wing has placed caution notice outside the building warning people not to come closer to it.

The notice states that the building is in dangerous and hazardous condition. The owners and inmates of the building have already been asked to vacate immediately as it is likely to collapse at any moment.

The adjoining buildings have also been vacated as a precautionary measure.

Maha: Anti-terror mock drill draws ire over ‘terrorists’ shouting slogans

    [ad_1]

Chandrapur: A police mock drill in a temple in Chandrapur in Maharashtra landed in controversy after the personnel posing as terrorists were allegedly shouting slogans connected to a particular community.

A group of lawyers has submitted a memorandum to the district police authorities on the issue, while Superintendent of Police Ravindrasingh Pardeshi on Sunday said all efforts would be taken to ensure such an error is not repeated.

The mock drill, which was conducted on January 11 at the renowned Mahakali Temple here, enacted a scene in which a group of terrorists took over a place of worship and held devotees hostage before being apprehended by security forces.

“Videos of the drill showing the personnel who played the part of terrorists in the mock drill shouting particular slogans. This portrays one community in a negative light and makes one believe all terrorists are from this community,” said Farat Baig, part of lawyers’ group here.

“We have submitted a memorandum to the office of the district SP against such sloganeering and portrayal. This act of the police amounts to defaming a community. Obviously, the script of the mock drill must have been overseen by the SP and other senior officials,” Baig said.

When contacted, SP Ravindrasingh Pardeshi said his department will “take necessary steps to ensure such an error is not repeated”.

The mock drill was carried out by personnel from the local police, the Anti Terrorism Squad, the specialised combat unit C-60, among others, officials said.

  • EV-linked fire incidents have claimed 10 lives in Telangana, AP

EV-linked fire incidents have claimed 10 lives in Telangana, AP

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana and Andhra Pradesh last year witnessed about eight incidents of e-bikes, houses and even e-bike showrooms and a hotel catching fire due to e-batteries exploding, killing 10 people and injuring many others.

Almost all the incidents took place when e-bikes were kept on charge and it is suspected that overcharging triggered the explosions.

The biggest disaster happened in Hyderabad in September when eight people lost their lives after a fire broke out in an e-bike showroom in the cellar of a multi-storeyed building and spread to a hotel on the upper floors.

A fire broke out in Gemopai electric scooters showroom in the building. The fire was caused by a short circuit which was triggered due to overcharging of the EVs.

Police had said that the CCTV footage showed that the smoke first emerged from an e-bike kept for charging.

Fire services officials also said the fire was the result of an apparent explosion of batteries in the e-bike showroom.

The horrific incident was captured on CCTV. Smoke emanated from an electric scooter and gradually spread around the vehicle. Within a few seconds, a small explosion occurred with the vehicle catching fire.

According to investigating officials, heat generated from overcharging of electric vehicles parked in the basement of Ruby Pride Luxury Hotel at Kummarguda in Secunderabad, had triggered an explosion in which eight persons succumbed to burns and 11 suffered burn injuries.

The investigations revealed that the vehicles were plugged for charging for a long duration and the lithium-ion battery pack that has a hundred individual battery cells reacted due to overheating and exploded.

A month later a fire broke out in a motor showroom in Andhra Pradesh’s Parvathipuram district. As many as 36 electric bikes were gutted in a huge fire in the showroom in Palakonda town.

E-bikes and batteries kept in the showroom for special discounted sale on Diwali were destroyed in the fire.

These were not isolated incidents. The Telugu states witnessed a series of fire accidents due to explosion of e-vehicle batteries.

In August two electric bikes caught fire as their batteries exploded while charging in Hyderabad.

In the first incident that occurred under the limits of Kushaiguda police station, two e-bikes were gutted. One T. Haribabu, who had purchased two e-bikes, had kept both the vehicles on charging in front of his house. An hour later, he heard a loud explosion and came out of the house to see both the two-wheelers engulfed in flames.

Three days before this, a person was injured when the battery of an electric bike exploded in the NGO colony of Vanasthalipuram.

The incident occurred when Koteshwar Rao turned the switch on to charge his parked bike, but it exploded. He suffered burn injuries on his hands and other parts of the body.

A house was gutted when an electric bike caught fire while it was being charged in Siddipet district of Telangana on June 8.

An electric bike burst into flames in Hyderabad on May 11. There were no casualties.

A man was killed and three others injured when the battery of an electric two-wheeler exploded in their house at Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh on April 23.

Earlier on April 19, an 80-year-old died and two others were injured when an electric bike kept on charging burst into flames when they were asleep at their house in Telangana’s Nizamabad town.

Farrukhabad: It was mathematics that led to a wedding being called off in Uttar Pradesh’s Farrukhabad district.

A 21-year-old bride called off her wedding when the groom failed to count currency notes.

The shocking revelation came during the marriage rituals when the priest grew ‘doubtful of the man’s behaviour’ and informed the girl’s family.

The bride, Rita Singh, immediately walked off from the dais which led to a verbal spat between the two families and the police were called.

The bride’s family claimed that until the day of the marriage, they were unaware that the 23-year-old groom was ‘mentally weak’.

Mohit, the bride’s brother, said, “Marriages usually happen in good faith and the mediator was a close relative, so we trusted him and did not meet the guy. When the priest told us about his odd behaviour, we decided to conduct a test and gave him 30 currency notes of Rs 10 to count which he could not. After knowing about his condition, Rita refused to marry him.”

After the girl called off the wedding, a heated argument ensued between the two families. The matter reached the police who tried to mediate but the bride was not willing to give in so the baraat had to return.

SHO Anil Kumar Chaube said, “No police complaint has been filed in the matter yet.”
